ICal is so slow it's almost unusable

I've seen other people posting about iCal slowing down but haven't seen many answers.
I use a Dual 2.5 GHz Power PC G5 with 4G RAM as my main computer, though I've got a MacBook Pro, two Powerbooks and sometimes an old Dual 1G G4 on my network as well. I'm updated on all my software and I use .Mac to sync everything but the G4.
My problem is, I moved my whole life into iCal, scheduling my personal life and even keeping track of my billable hours through iCal and now the program has slowed down to a very frustrating speed. It literally takes 8 seconds to change a time from AM to PM. Changing an item from one calendar to another can take 12 to 20 seconds.
In an earlier post by another user experiencing the same problem a responder suggested that maybe a Widget or some other program might be slowing iCal. I've tried running iCal alone without any other apps open. I've tried getting rid of every Widget and I've tried turning off iMac sync. I also tried, as someone suggested, Resetting the Sync history in iSync. Nothing. I've also tried disaling any calendars that are updated externally (Brewers' schedule, Packers' schedule). That didn't seem to make a difference either. I've also tried turning off any repeating dates and birthdays. Nothing seems to change the speed.
Does anyone have any insight into where iCal might go for information or what programs might try to access iCal information. Are there any logical places where bottlenecks can exist? iCal hasn't always been slow. It seemed as though it was slowing down on my MacBook first. Now it's slow on any computer I use.
I really don't want to go back to Microsoft but I can't live with this reduced speed.
TIA,
Peter

Ugh, this is painful. I've tried to delete all of my recurring events, but the last one will NOT delete. My computer hangs, the laptop fan starts going, the computer gets super hot. Spinning ball. My plan was to delete all of my recurring events, and make new ones with end dates. But any time I click on this one event the program hangs. This is terrible.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • 2010 Macbook Pro is running SUPER slow.  Almost unusable.

My 2010 Macbook Pro is running so slow that it's almost unusable due to the buffering of data and the color wheel spinning incessantly.  I close applications, restart and nothing helps.  I have not downloaded any clean up software.  I teach and am dependent on my computer for EVERYTHING I do.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Determine if the same problems exist in "Safe Mode". Read below.
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
If you are still experiencing problems more information will be required. If you don't know where to start, EtreCheck can help with that. Read below.
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. • Mac gets gradually slower until it's almost unusable

A couple of months ago something got corrupted on my hard drive which caused the computer to not boot properly. I was able to back it up, repair the drive, and reinstall the OS.
Everything was fine, but things seemed to be slower, though that could just be in my head.
Fast forward to now... I always leave my computer on. Yeah. I hate the environment. I came in one day and my computer had powered down sometime during the night, so I rebooted it and noticed that my battery no longer charges. I keep my computer plugged in, so not sure if the battery issue would have powered down my computer in and of itself. It shouldn't have.
Then I noticed slowness. Like unbearable slowness - just using Office and surfing the web. A lot of pages become unresponsive and/or take forever to load. It's not my internet connection. I was able to finally get a speedtest to load and speed was fine (25mbps down and 20 up). Also, I have a bunch of other computers, including an Air and they were fine on the same network. Also, EVERYTHING becomes slow, not just my browser. Even System Preferences and Finder take forever to open (spinning beachball).
It's not RAM, diskspace or CPU, based on looking at my activity monitor, so the only think I can think is perhaps my hard drive is failing.
If I close everything and reboot, then speed will resume back to normal, but then it will start to slow again after a few hours of usage. I guess the other thing it could be is one of the programs I run. I generally run Chrome, Outlook, word, excel, powerpoint, itunes (streaming via icloud), Lync and Skype. I supposed it could be one of those programs, but nothing in Activity Monitor shows any high usage by any one process.
I have an appointment to take my computer in, but my fear is that it'll be running fine. I have to be doing things for a few hours before it becomes super super slow. It almost seems like a memory leak somewhere.
I've run disk utility and it can't find anything wrong with the hard drive. The drive isn't making any strange noises or clicking. My computer does take about a minute to boot up these days though. I don't recall it being that sluggish before, but maybe it was.
Any ideas on what could be the problem or recommendations for other things to try? I was unable to successfully do a Hardware Test. I tried a zillion times (booting up while pressing "D") and nada.

  • ICal is VERY slow

My iCal suddenly (past week) takes approx. 3 minutes to open and equally as long when I select an event.
I am worried now however becuase my USB and firewire ports have also quit.
I also tried to load the latest Virex DAT files (worried there may be a virus cause for all this) and was told I didn't have enough hard drive space for the download (I have 140 G available???).
I don't know where to start but am starting to think this is all related. I only know it started with the recognition of the iCal trouble.
    Please help.
    Baron

iCal has always been a slow, pokey application on my 800mhz iMac. Newer versions installed as I upgraded OS through the years to 10.4.8 haven't made it any faster. Right now it is almost unusable, going into spinning beachball waits after I type half a line of text. Does this application have some memory leak problem, or does it get chronically crippled after some thousands of entries are stored in its database? Other simple calendar programs I've used in the past for peecees and sgi machines never slowed the computer down to a crawl by just typing 5 words of text. Is there anybody out there running ical on an old 800mhz imac, with many years of calendar entries, that can use iCal without all the spinning beachballs and extreme wait times? Is there anything that can be done (disk defragmentation etc.) that can speed up the performance of iCal on a machine that doesn't have any hardware or font or permissions problems? And if this abysmal performance is universal for all users with iMacs that are a few years old, is there any other more efficient calendar program for macs that can import several years of ical data? Doesn't do much good to have a pretty application if it runs so sluggishly that you have to go microwave your coffee to kill time until it catches up enough to type another line of text.

  • My iMac is now almost unusable! Thanks Lion!!

Upgraded to 10.7.2 Lion and now my system is so slow it's rendered itself almost unusable. On top of that my internet drops out at every gust of wind, resulting in my having to restart it every 15 minutes!! We are a retail comany ramping up big time now for Xmas printing and I can't work with this any more. On top of that, my machine has spent 4 days in the apple store being rebuilt from scratch, thanks to Lion upgrade!!
Thanks, Apple - to whom do I complain please?!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search. A text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/com\.apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, steps 1-4 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Update to 10.10.3 Failed Now MacPro is Almost Unusable

The update to 10.10.3 failed -- got stuck at 99% so I powered down and after many attempts I got back to the desktop.  I am now still on 10.10.2 but my MacPro has slowed to a crawl.  I was advised that Yosemite needs more memory (I have 2GB) so I ordered 8GB more and it's on its way.  However I need to use my computer but it's almost unusable -- programs open so slow then automatically shut down.  I really don't think the memory will fix this as I've been running Yosemite for a while and just in the last few days has it been brought to it's knees.
Is there anything else that I can check to see why it is so so so slow?
    Thanks

  • ICal is too slow for practical use and crashes after it is opened

I am using an iMac G4 with OSX10.4.8. iCal is so slow that it has become impractical to use. Every click takes at least a minute to complete. Moving from the daily to the monthly view takes at least 3 minutes. I have discarded the plist file from the user library and it did not help. Any idea what is going on? Safari also suffers from the same slowness problem. I no longer use it. Have switched to Firefox.

I was having the same problem and it started after I upgraded to Tiger. After trying all the solutions, I discovered the problem with my iCal, which might not be the same for yours.
I was trying to sync with Entourage. I only had about 5 appointments on there, but once I deleted that calendar and unchecked the Sync to .Mac under preferences.
Now it runs SUPER fast. So it may be a problem with one of the calendars that you've created.
    Good luck.
    Thanks!

  • Downloaded ios5 to my iPad, had trouble with all my apps but that got fixed.  now the whole thing is so slow it is almost useless.  have rebooted, didn't help

i downloaded ios5 to my ipad.  Initially had problem with apps which was fixed by downloading an upgrade and they all staarted working.  But everything is so slow it is almost useless. i have tried rebooting, it didn't help.

Other users have reported this very same issue after updating their iPads. You are using the original iPad according to your profile and those devices seem to be the more adversely affected devices. You can try the basic things and see if any of this helps.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If none of those things help, you can always try restoring your iPad. I have restored mine with some success, but I still have issues that I hope will be resolved soon.
An update to the iOS has been announced and it is in Beta now. Hopefully it will be released to all users soon.

  • Updated 9.0 Beta (20111212185108) a few days ago. Now having "Not Responding" message almost everytime I use Firefox. Long delays until it responds. Almost unusable now.

Downloaded update to Firefox 9.0 Beta (20111212185108) on 12-16-11. Update status was successful. Now Firefox delays with "Not Responding" message almost every time I click on something. Browser is almost unusable.

You are welcome. I'm glad you got it back up.
    (1) You say you did the symbolic link. I will assume this is set correctly; it's very important that it is.
    (2) I don't know what you mean by "Been feeding the [email protected] for several weeks now, 700 emails each day at least." After the initial training period, SpamAssassin doesn't learn from mail it has already processed correctly. At this point, you only need to teach SpamAssassin when it is wrong. [email protected] should only be getting spam that is being passed as clean. Likewise, [email protected] should only be getting legitimate mail that is being flagged as junk. You are redirecting mail to both [email protected] and [email protected] ... right? SpamAssassin needs both.
    (3) Next, as I said before, you need to implement those "Frontline spam defense for Mac OS X Server." Once you have that done and issue "postfix reload" you can look at your SMTP log in Server Admin and watch as Postfix blocks one piece of junk mail after another. It's kind of cool.
    (4) Add some SARE rules:
Visit http://www.rulesemporium.com/rules.htm and download the following rules:
    70sareadult.cf
    70saregenlsubj0.cf
    70sareheader0.cf
    70sarehtml0.cf
    70sareobfu0.cf
    70sareoem.cf
    70sarespoof.cf
    70sarestocks.cf
    70sareunsub.cf
    72sare_redirectpost
Visit http://www.rulesemporium.com/other-rules.htm and download the following rules:
    backhair.cf
    bogus-virus-warnings.cf
    chickenpox.cf
    weeds.cf
    Copy these rules to /etc/mail/spamassassin/
Then stop and restart mail services.
There are other things you can do, and you'll find differing opinions about such things. In general, I think implementing the "Frontline spam defense for Mac OS X Server" and adding the SARE rules will help a lot. Good luck!

    That's Adobe for you!
No matter how much we request, beg and/or complain, nothing is done about the miserably small interface.
We're still left with the three inadequate choices in preferences:
Other than that, you can change your monitor's resolution.

  • When Add-ons download, it slows my laptop down til it is almost unusable. Do I need them and if not, how do I stop them?

I am not really sure what these Add-ons do and do not know if I need them. When they download (automatically), they slow my laptop down to the point of almost being unusable. If I don't absolutely need them, how do I keep them from automatically downloading and slowing down my computer?
