ICal malfunctioning and refusing to be re-installed

I just got my new 24-inch iMac after disposing of my old 15-inch iMac earlier this summer.
I backed up a lot of stuff from my old computer, including my iCal calendars, and thought it would be smart to transfer these to my new setup... not so, it seems. I will try to explain all my actions leading up to the problem:
What I did was just copying all the folders from the Sources folder in the iCal folder in Application Support in my User Library from my old computer and to the same folder on my new computer.
The result was that when I next opened iCal none of the calendars showed up in the calendar list on the left of the application window, and nothing happened when I tried to add a new calendar from the File menu. No event showed in the main calendar view either.
This made me remove all the old calendar folders again from the "user/library/application_support/iCal/sources" folder, but the same problem persisted.
Then I tried to remove the "user/library/application_support/iCal" folder altogether, and this at first seemed to help, because when I next opened iCal it automatically created a new folder with the relevant files and the default calendars (home & work) again showed up in the calendar list. However the next time I opened iCal again the same problem was back, no calendars in the list.
This when I did the second thing I probably shouldn't have done. I decided to delete the entire iCal application so that I could install it again and start from scratch. I dragged the application and the "user/library/application_support/iCal" folder to the trash can and pressed "empty trash". What happened then was that I got this message: The operation cannot be completed because the item "iCalAlarmScheduler" is in use. I had the option to stop or continue, and chose continue. This seemed to delete everything but a small part of the iCal appl. The file in my trash can still shows as an appl file, but takes no more than 56 KB on disk.
It annoyed me that I couldn't get rid of this file (I still haven't been able to), but I thought I might try to install iCal again all the same. First I tried to do it from the OS X disks that were supplied with the computer, but I couldn't find the iCal appl as a separate object that could be installed separately. I then downloaded iCal from the Apple site. The message I get however, when I try to run this installer is: iCal software cannot be installed on this computer. Then the installer just closes. This is my current situation.
I really miss iCal as a way to organize my activities and would appreciate if anyone could help me sort out this problem.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can certainly transfer older data files from one computer to another under most circumstances, but you should always do so using the Migration Assistant on your new machine to transfer your entire user account, and never try to selectively copy bits and pieces of one environment to the other. Doing so under limited circumstances may result in the desired outcome, but the process is severely complicated when OS X generations differ from one to the other - when, for example, you want to move OS X 10.3.9 data to a new, intel-based 10.4.8 machine.
There are several reason why such moves are prone to fail, including the different file structures used across OS X applications between generations, the differing storage locations for such files, subtle and often unapparent but critical differences in PowerPC and intel versions of the OS, and their supporting applications like iCal and the Address Book.
Here is more information on the Migration Assistant:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
That article outlines the best practices for moving data from one machine to another, and from Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later to Mac OS X 10.4 of any generation.
The version of iCal you downloaded is incompatible both with Mac OS X 10.4 and later, and with the intel platform you attempted to install it on. The way to reinstall, upgrade or update iCal 2 and later under Mac OS X 10.4 or later, is explained here:

  • SAVING iCAL ADDRESS BOOK, AND MAIL MESSAGES IN 'CEAN INSTALL'...

I have a 1.2GHz G4 iBook with 768MB ram and a 27.82GHz hard drive currently running Tiger 10.4.11. I've got a lot of stuff I don't use on it and only have 7.96GB available space remaining. I'd like to wipe the drive clean, and do a fresh install of Leopard.
First, can I install Leopard on a PowerPC machine? (Do I have to look for a PowerPC version when I purchase it).
Second, how do I save my e-mails, iCal entries, and Address Book files to an external hard drive in order to add them to the new OS and associated apps later?
    Donagh

Leopard is a universal installer and works on both platforms.
To save your files backup the following:
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

when i attach my iphone 4 with computer it shows one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it,now what can i do ..plz help me

I would first try unplugging All the USB devices plugged into your computer, and then plug back in just the iPhone and see if that is recognized.  Also, do you have the latest version of iTunes for Windows installed on your PC, as you need to?
    Hope this helps

I connected my sons Ipod Touch to my pc and it worked fine. Now, when I try to connect my iPad the following message comes up: One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
I checked the cable. It surely is not the cable. If I connect the iPod again it works fine. If I use the same cable with my pc and ipad at work or my other son’s laptop, it is working perfectly. It is only on my laptop where the iPod was connected. Something tells me it got something to do with the drivers that went corrupt or something when I connected the iPod.
I searched the internet and I see a lot of people gets this message. Still no solved answers yet. Is there a place where I can download the drivers again or any other suggestions?

    Kind regards,

I was hoping it would be something like a USB device conflict, but now the shuffle is the only thing connected...

Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

You are installing the Apple Mobile Device USB driver, which I did not have to do previously, so something in the updates has been left out / or changed.

I have an hp office jet 4500 and os maverick 10.9.4 and I can’t get it to print after last upgrade, multiple malfunctions and error, help? I have tried deleting and resetting printer and re-installing update 6 times. Last update attempt showed none available??? I can’t load the software directly from HP because their only option is to use the software update option on the mac....frustrated!!! Help!!
I get blank pages that just run through the printer and a stats window that just 33% complete and goes no further.

I am going on the guess that an old driver is still installed...
Use Finder Go > go to folder, and go to /Library/Printers and delete the HP folder(s).
    Reset the Printing System:
OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
Now, Add the printer in Print & Scan prefs.

Just bought the G31TM-P21 motherboard and installed it with a E3200 proc. Whenever I plug in a USB device in one of the four ports on the back panel I get the message:
"One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."
After clicking the message I get a window with:
"One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." with a tree of USB Root Hub (2 ports) with Unused Port and Unknown device under it.
If I go to Device Manager nothing appears to be uninstalled but if I expand the USB I do have a single instance of Unknown Device among the root hub and host controller. I'm running windows XP home 32 SP3.

I installed Yosemite last night. Today I needed to print a lot of papers. When I tried to print - nothing happened. Would not even print a test page. Looked it up and found information that said to uninstall printer and re-install. After searching a long time for the CD - I have been trying to reinstall and it only installed a tiny bit and stopped. It has been trying for the last hour and refuses to install the drivers! Why don't they tell you this ahead of time. This is such a problem. Can anyone help? Thanks

  • Acrobat X: Combining Files to PDF hangs and refuses to load

So I am hoping someone can help me.  I bought this product and installed it yesterday (10/16/12).  I am running Windows 7 OS, and had no problem with the install. 10.1.4 is the version of Acrobat (more specifically) that I am working with.  Today, when I go to combine files, It asks me to chose: File, Folder, etc...
When choosing "file" the program opens the explorer window to go find the file, but never fully loads.  Then it just hangs forever.
This is primarily why I upgraded, since my Acrobat 8 couldn't handle the new Office 2010 stuff and refused to recognize those files.  Now, I can't even get ANYTHING to load to combine.
    Ideas/suggestions/fixes?  Thank you!

    hurricane_heide,
If you just bought Acrobat X, you may be elligible for a free upgrade to the latest and greatest Acrobat XI.
Obviously it should not happen. A few typical things to retry.
    (1) Reboot. [Fixes all sorts of glitches]
    (2) Turn off your virus and spyware protection does it work now?
    (3) Try a clean install of the program. Run the Acrobat Cleaner tool. http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
    (4) Try as a different user.

  • Why did the Virus known as Bing infect my computer and refuse to leave?

A few days ago the Virus known as BING infected my computer and refuses to leave.  It has usurped my homepage and my browser and will not permit me to reset my defaults to Google.  It has stolen my computer.
BING is haunting me.  It appears that the common lingo is to describe BING as a semi-benign virus.  I find nothing benign about it. I called the MS Customer Service number and they refused to help.  The MAC folks were helpful, but they didn't create this problem, Microsoft did.
Of course, I would like to know how MS can get away with this, but I would be satisfied just getting rid of the Evil BING.  I am NOT computer savvy, but I know when someone is using me surreptitious with malicious software.
If I am overlooking something simple, please forgive.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One very common cause of having Bing take over as your search engine is that you have installed the InstallMac adware. The most common way to become "infected" with this adware is to download something from Softonic. See:
    Continue to boycott Softonic
Because InstallMac is powered by the Genieo adware, you can follow the removal instructions in the link dominic23 gave you. Be aware that InstallMac does not include some of the components mentioned in that removal guide, including the Genieo application. If a particular component is missing, skip it and move on to the next one.
Finally, note that this is in no way the fault of Bing, which is a legitimate search engine powered by Microsfot. This is probably some kind of click fraud scam, attempting to generate advertising revenue for the creators of InstallMac by sending visitors to Bing.

Can not get iCal to work at all. It will launch and then will immediatly freeze and I have to force quit. It's been a few days like this so I've restarted numerous times, checked my activity monitor, confirmed that I have Helvetica installed, turned off anything associated with iCal, tried to download and re-install but wasn't allowed. I tried to find it on the install disc but couldn't find it listed amongst the bundled software. I checked for updates and there aren't any.

Hi. This happened to me too when I first got my Macbook, and I also couldn't find my install disc. Do you get that taunting little spinning wheel immediately when you open it? I was still under my original warranty at the time, and this is what Apple had me do (some of which you have already done, so I won't list it):
-Do you have other users on your computer, and does iCal work for them?
-Try deleting the preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist. Quit iCal first, and note that you will have to re-enter your settings. You can probably drag them to your desktop also and restart.
-Call Apple and get a new install disc (they sent me mine for free). You can do an archive install of just iCal, I believe, and they can walk you through it.
    Good luck!
