ICal / MobileMe To Dos & iPhone syncing over mobile networks: Solution!!!

I have been after a solution to use the to do list in iCal on my Mac @ home and the MobileMe Calendar web page while at work & away from home AND have it sync OTA with my iPhone. There hasn't been a solution that I have found for this until now! I have tried Things and OmniFocus, but in my opionion they are both too bloated for my needs. I want a simple todo list with due dates, notes, priorities and URLs, that I can use on desktops as well as mobile. The iCal / MobileMe to do list is perfect for this, but until now there hasn't been a way to keep the same todo list on my iPhone and keep it in sync everywhere.
I now have a solution. Appigo recently launched a beta of their iCal Sync app for OSX. I downloaded & installed this to my Mac at home, and downloaded their iPhone Todo app. Great syncing between iCal and iPhone over my home Wifi network. Then, I thought, what is to stop me using this over the internet when I'm not at home? So I setup a domain with no-ip.org, which allows you to point a domain name at your home DSL router IP address and have it forward traffic to your home computer. Using a DNS solution in this way means you can dynamically update the domain name to change when your router public IP address changes (unless you have a static IP assigned with your ISP). So, anyway, I set this up to point at my router's public IP address, then configured my home router to forward a specific TCP port to my Mac. So when traffic arrives at the router from the internet destined for this specific port, the router forwards it to the Mac. I configured the Appigo iCal sync app to listen on a static port (the same one I configured on the router) and ensured both my Mac and router firewalls were set to permit this traffic.
So now, with MobileMe set to sync automatically, I can add/edit/delete a todo on my iPhone when I'm away from my home wifi network and it instantly syncs with iCal on my Mac at home, then that gets propogated almost instantly to MobileMe. Also it means a change to the todo list on my Mac or on the MobileMe Calendar web page will also almost instantly get propgated to my iPhone (next timne the Todo app syncs).
Brilliant! The perfect solution for me, and only costing the price of the Appigo todo iPhone app!
If anyone would like more detail on how this was all done, let me know and I can go into more detail.
Just need to find something similar for note syncing now, and I'll be sorted.

Thanks for the excellent information on Appigo ToDo and Sync. This is great way to fulfill the unexplainable absence of this feature from Apple's own application suite (MobileMe, iCal, To Do items).
I downloaded Sync and the iPhone app. Configuration was a snap. I'm still working from a trial membership of MobileMe...with this feature working I'm just about ready to pony up and get a full membership.

  • IPhone Syncing under Mobile Me

    I have an interesting arrangement.
    Family Mac Login/Dot.Mac Account
    Husband Mac Login/Dot.Mac Account
    Wife Mac Login/Dot.Mac Account
Our iTunes account is the Family Mac Login/Dot.Mac account. I used a program called "Sharealike" http://ifthensoftwarehq.blogspot.com/2005/05/sharealike.html to enable the Husband and Wife accounts to share the same iTunes account. It's worked perfectly for two years now.
When one of us wants to Sync an iPod, we login to our individual account (not the Family shared account). Thus, the iPod receives the shared music database, but the dot.mac calendar, contacts, etc, that are downloaded are specific to the individual. This was the only easy way to do this given synchronization by cable under the old dot.mac system.
The question is, under Mobile Me, will we continue to have to do this?
If the identify of the iPhone is set on the iPhone itself, then we should be able to sync the music database *independent* of the dot.mac information. In other words, we should be able to connect both iPhones to the Family account and the iPhones will download the dot.mac information over the air because the dot.mac userid/password would be entered on the phone itself.
On the other hand, if the registration of the dot.mac account to the iPhone is done in iTunes when first synchronization occurs, then this won't work. We'll still have to synchronize the iPhones in our individual accounts.
Does anyone understand the direction that Apple took? I'm hoping that iTunes is agnostic regarding the dot.mac syncing. I suppose I'll know for sure in a couple weeks, but if anyone knows.... I'm all ears. Thanks.

No, and Apple's lack of response is a little disturbing...
    Situation again, is this.
Mac Login/Dot.Mac Account -- Family Shared
    - Owns the iTunes Database
Mac Login/Dot.Mac Account -- Husband Account
    - Shares the iTunes Database (using ShareAlike to set permissions)
Mac Login/Dot.mac Account -- Wife Account
    - Shares the iTunes Database (using ShareAlike to set permissions)
In order to download the dot.mac calendar, address book, etc, our iphones are synced using the Husband/Wife accounts. Yes, we could sync under the Family account and get the music, but we wouldn't have our specific calendar and contact information.
    Now....
With the advent of MobileMe, I am making an enormous assumption that:
    (a) iTunes won't be used to sync the calendar/contacts/etc with dot.mac.
    (b) the setting as to which dot.mac (aka MobileMe) account the iPhone will sync with will be configured on the phone itself--not in your iTunes profile.
If I'm right on (a) and (b) then I should be able to sync both iPhones using the Family Shared account. And specify in the phone's configuration the dot.mac account that will sync/push data with/to the iPhone. Thus, it will be easy to maintain separate identifies on the iPhone while syncing to a shared music database. I can't for the life of me think that Apple would want to do anything other than this arrangement--it makes so much sense.
But, alas, Apple's been silent on giving us guidance. I'd like to know because I plan on buying 2 3G iPhones and I'd like to have an idea of how to sync the phones under MobileMe. I'd also like to turn off this sharing arrangement if it's no longer needed.

  • IPhone HE-AAC Streaming over Mobile Network (3G)

Developed an internet radio streamer using utilizing the html5 audio tags with jQuery and with a flash fall back for unsupported browsers, streaming through an icecast2 server. Upon testing the player on the iPhone Safari (iOS 5.0.1), we ran into a very peculiar issue.
When the iPhone is connected to WiFi, it streams perfectly using the HE-AAC V2 stream @ 64kbps 44.1kHz (the preferred codec for apple products). However, when the iPhone is connected to the 3G mobile network (ATT and Verizon), it "stutters/buffers" or stops streaming for 1-2 secs every 1-2 minutes (does not stop streaming completely). The troubling thing is when the iPhone is forced to use a separate MP3 stream at the same bit rate, it does not have this issue and works very well on 3G.

    Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for the fast response. I'm confused as to how AAC requires higher bandwidth over MP3 when it can produce higher quality audio at lower bit rates therefore requiring less bandwidth to stream over 3G. Are you referring to the bandwidth of the audio signal itself (at the codec level)?

  • Odd high data consumption on 10.3.1 (and 10.2.1) - on wifi, but routing over mobile network?

Couldn't find a similar recent thread. Just an inconclusive one from 2013 that looked more about the difference between BBOS 7 & BB10.
tl;dr: It looks like my Z10 is routing some traffic to the mobile network when to applications it looks like the wifi connection is active.
I have not previously had high data-use issues with my Z10. On Friday February 20th, I updated to 10.3.1.1581. On Friday March 6th, I got a notice saying I'd used 75% of my data (billing cycle is on the 18th, 800MB limit). At that point, the device monitor said I'd used ~300MB*.
Woke up the next morning and say an alert that came in overnight saying I'd gone past my limit, and the device monitor said I'd used ~540MB.
240MB of mobile network data use while I was at home, connected to wifi, and asleep. The device monitor attributed it to "System". Normally, my mobile data use is mostly PIM and Browser.
I looked back in the data usage report from Koodo and saw that there was a previous, similar spike on Feb 20, earlier in the day before the 10.3.1 upgrade. Right around the time I turned on wifi at work and put the phone on its dock, hoping to start the upgrade. That failed due to AP issues.
I use "Pocket Casts" (Android podcast app). It's set to download only when on wifi and connected to power.
Could it be that it thought I was connected to wifi, but due to weak signal strength, the OS actually routed the connection over the mobile network? I sometimes only have one bar of signal strength in my bedroom.
If that's the case, why is an Android app's data use recorded as "System" and not at least "Android Player"? It looks like it must be lumped in under "System", though, as the wifi usage numbers don't show anything else with enough bandwidth consumption to account for podcast downloads.

    hi,
what is Koodo and what do "AP issues" mean?
besides, on Friday 20th, which OS version did you update from?

  • Z10, no bbm over mobile network

My Z10 (10.3.1) does not connect to BB services when not on wifi.  Ie there is not bb icon on the top right of the screen when on mobile network. What's curious to me at least, is that on the mobile network, bbm video and voice calls work, just not the messages. Once on wifi, the bb logo appears and all is well. I contacted my provider (Telus) and they suggested that is was a sim problem or a phone problem. I had the sim replaced and it did not solve the problem. This occured today July 26 and its been about 9 hours like this. How can I get bbm to work again please?  ( I am currently upgradeing to OS 10.3.2.2 Thanks

  • Blend maintaining connection over mobile network

    Hi there,
I've been using BB Blend (on a Lenovo laptop) by connecting my BB Z10 via an USB cable (no Wi-Fi).
Only today, BB Blend has remained connected to my handset even after I disconnect the cable. On the handset I get the message that Blend has switched to a mobile network connection ansd so it remains connected to my BB Z10.
    Now, my  questions are:
How and to which network does Blend on the Lenovo laptop connect? (even if it is the handset's network, how does the laptop connect?)
Is this something I should be concerned about - in terms of security?
    Thanks everybody.

    Hello,
When you disconnect the USB cable, the "hard line" connection between the device and the computer is of course severed. If they are both on the same "local" (e.g., no carrier data network involved) network (either WiFi or hybrid wired and WiFi), the two can communicate with each other that way. If you have set the configuration on the device to allow it to continue to be connected to the computer when the BB has moved off of all WiFi and is solely on your carrier data network, then the two will continue to communicate via that means.
In that last configuration, your BB is communicating to your PC via the wired (or WiFi) network on which your laptop is located, and the BB is communicating via the carrier data network. Those two are then in turn connected via the Internet.
This is a setting you control, on the device. If you do not want this communication happening when the BB moves solely to the carrier data network, then simply shut the setting off on your device.
    Hope that helps!

  • ICal To Dos not syncing over MobileMe

This is very weird but I can't get iCal To Dos on my home computer to sync with iCal To Dos on my work computer. The Calendar checkbox is ticked in my MobileMe settings and they appear to have synced in the past but new To Dos I created at work are now not showing up at home.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Greetings,
Are you using the old MobileMe calendar or the new?

  • MobileMe - Muiliple iCals on two Macs, iPhone (Sync problem)

I have two Macs : G5 PowerMac and MacPro.
I have set up-iCal on PowerMac with a lot of Calenders to cover items like walking, music, meetings A, meetings B, activity C, etc.
Sent email from one computer to the other to Synchronised iCal. However, I am now using MobileMe. What is strange is that the PowerMac does not find the "extra" calenders that I created on the PowerMac whereas, using MobileMe as well, the iphone finds them.
I repat: both Macs synchronise iCals to the MobileMe however the extar calenders in the PowerMac are not sychronised back to the MacPro portable. However, they must be on MobileMe because the iPhoe finds them all ! Why?
    Thanks. Kevin GARDINER

I think I have my own answer !
I have worked out that the only way to proceed is to select either the PowerPC or the MacPro PC as the "MAster Calender". Then in the MobileMe preferences, I reinitialse the data with a transfer from the MAster iCal to the MobileMe. I wait for the date to be transferred to Apple's site "MOBILEME". Then on the second machine, do the opposite: reinitialise the data and transfer FROM MobileMe to the computer. I then have the same updated data on both machines and also on the MobileMe site. For the iphone, it gets, within the 15mins "push" settings, the data from MobileMe. THus all four sets of dataa are synchronised.
    Thanks for reading this.
    Regards,
    Kevin

  • Does the iPhone sync over album art?

    Hello,
Running a new iPhone 4s with the most current version of iOS.  I have about 20GB of music files copied over to the device.
Since activating iTunes Match I'm noticing that when playing the songs that are already synced to the iPhone are not immediately showing their cover art.  From what I can tell, upon playing one of those songs, the iPhone is going to iCloud and downloading the cover art. If I play each and every song on the album, the artwork eventually downloads for all tracks.  If I don't play a track, the art work never appears.
Is anyone else seeing this?  My iPod Touch never worked in this way - album art was copied over when I sync'd the device.  With the iPhone, however -- and with iTunes Match enabled, it appears that it's done differently.  Not a huge deal - I'd just rather have the cover art immediately as I always have.
    Thanks!

    YES! Well, read on...
It will only sync with Outlook, but I have used a great program called "DoubleLook" which is made my CompanionLink. Find it at www.companionlink.com

  • All-day iCal events made on iPhone sync to Mac as one day late.

Had this problem a little while now, can't remember what started it, but it hasn't always been like this. I remember first being aware of it near the end of last year because I wondered if the problem might correct itself once 2011 began.
If I create an all-day event on the iPhone calendar, it will sync to the mac's iCal as being one day later. If I enter an event on my phone that's all day, Saturday the 5th of March, it will show up on my computer as Sunday the 6th.
Events which are not "all-day" are completely unaffected.
Both devices are set to the same time zone, with the iPhone having timezone support on and the mac having timezone support off. I've toyed with trying different combinations of these settings but nothing changes. I have to manually drag the mac iCal events one day earlier once they're synced. This fixes it, because it doesn't appear to then bump the iPhone copy of the event any earlier.
But that's a massive pain and I've lost faith in iCal as a timekeeping device. Anything glaringly obvious that I've missed?

I have this problem too. I have an iPhone 4, and this wasn't a problem when I bought the phone back in December. I think it came a month or so later and I suspect with a standard upgrade of something like itunes, or iphone software... but I can't pinpoint it to any specific update as it took me a while to notice it. For me, it does this with my work calendar which is run through Microsoft Outlook. But it's the exact same thing - and it means my calendar isn't reliable anymore.
I've made sure the time-zone settings are correct, I've updated all software, and gone through all possible settings for both my i-phone and Outlook. Nothing fixes the problem, even our tech guy at work didn't know what to do. I know it's not just my phone as the exact same thing has happened with my boss's iPhone which is an iPhone 3G, and it frustrates him to no end.
I'm really hoping someone at apple can tell us what's going on, especially since it never used to do this and there doesn't seem to be any way to fix it. If someone thinks they know what itunes update this was due to, let me know - I'll see if I can go back to that older version.

  • Does Apple repair iphones on Virgin Mobile network?

My daughter's phone dropped out of her back pocket this morning and shattered the screen.  Since I didn't buy the phone at an Apple store, will they help me?

Apple will handle your iPhone regardless of where you purchased it. Apple does not repair iPhones, but will replace the entire iPhone for a flat fee. See the Service Pricing section here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/
There are independent iPhone repair services that may be able to do the repair for less than Apple's out-of-warranty charge. Do a web search for "iPhone repair". Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPhone serviced by an unauthorized shop, all further warranty and support from Apple will be voided.
    Regards.

In iCal's preferences, you can configure whether and when events get purged.
As for recovering old, deleted events... I don't suppose you have backups?...
