Ical newbie sync question

I have a macbook 2 GHz intel core 2 duo, with 2gb of ram, running mac os x 10.7.1.
I'm a long-time mac user, but total ical newbie....in that I've never really used this feature much in the past.
What I'd **like to be able to do is use ical on my laptop & sync it to my [semi] smart phone, a samsung SGH-A877.
*SPECIFICALLY* I need appointments made on my cell phone to be sync'd to ical, and vice/versa, and then be able to print out a 'report' from ical as to the month's activity. I'm sure this is very very seamless for iphone users, but the buy in $$ for an iphone is prohibitive.
So, I need to know 2 things:
1. Can I do what I want to do with my existing phone? and if not...
2. Can I do what I want to do with a *different phone, but not iphone or any of the other top drawer big bucks phones?
Thanks.

Entourage only syncs to iCal with the "Entourage" calendar. So, in iCal, you can have several other calendars in addition to the "Entourage" calendar, and Entourage will never touch them.
So, if you download your husband's calendar from icalx, you will not lose it when Entourage syncs w/ iCal.
Also, you will be able to publish your "Entourage" calendar to icalx (via iCal) and he will be able to subscribe to it in iCal no problem.
However, it is going to be more work for you b/c you can't set iCal to subscribe to a calendar and have that same subscribed calendar sync w/ Entourage. Out of the box this option isn't available.
So, as far as free options go, you could:
1) Use iCal for calendaring.
2) Manually drag in the .ics file into Entourage each time.
3) Create an applescript to assist with this (one idea would be create a "husband" category in Entourage, and use an applescript to import the .ics, assigning it the "husband" category. Each time you import a new .ics file the applescript deletes the old items in the "husband" category).
If you are willing to invest some time in it, applescript is worthwhile to learn and you will find excellent help in the applescript forums.

  • ICal/Entourage sync question

Sorry, this might be long. I use Entourage primarily, with a Palm device; my husband uses iCal with a Palm device. I'm trying to figure out a way to get my calendar and his calendar syncing so that we can see each others' appointments.
Here's where i am now: Entourage syncs with iCal. I publish my iCal to www.icalx.com; he subscribes to that calendar (and vice versa.)
My question: I have my Entourage preferences set to have Entourage events override events in Sync Services, rather than merge (I was getting lots of doubled events before I chose this option.) If I download his calendar onto iCal on its own calendar (NOT on the calendar called "Entourage") will it either disappear (b/c Entourage events will override in the sync) or eat up my data in Entourage?
And...does anybody have any easier ways to do this? AppleTalk doesn't work and we got tired of exporting and emailing them to each other every morning to reflect updates. (Man, somebody should write an Apple Script to do that!) And I don't want to pay $99/year for a .Mac account just to do this.
Thanks, and sorry for the length.
    Heath

  • ICal/Outlook syncing question on a PC/Mac

So I have a mac at home (synced with video/music/ical/photos) and a PC at work with my work Outlook calendar.
I was impressed to see that I could sync outlook at work without breaking my connection to my mac at home. However, what I don't like is that the touch will also push my ical calendars into my work outlook on my PC. I'd rather keep home and work separate. Does anyone know how to merge calendars on the touch, but prevent merging on the computers themselves?

    Hi Scott,
I have had a few growing pains working out what to do on this exact subject and I am slowly getting there.
I am still working on it and will update as I proceed but I think I have the start of an answer. Most of the settings that can achieve this are within the iPhone and you need to ensure that these are set correctly to achieve what you want. At the moment I am changing these whilst my iPhone is connected to my Macbook G4 which is the computer I set up the iPhone with O2 the service provider in the UK when I got it last week.
I have MobileMe and work email account set up on my iPhone that are pushing email fine and dandy.
Here is the important bit, on your iPhone go into settings>mail, contacts, calendar>work email account. You will see the choice of ON or OFF for mail, contacts, calendar. Check these are all ON for your work email account and this will sync all the relevant Outlook data with no problem. Choose OFF for contacts and calendar on your personal email account and this will give you what you want. I currently have mail and bookmarks selected on my personal account this gives me the stuff I want on my iPhone.
You can then set up the other sync items through iTunes on the computer you normally sync the iPhone with.
At the moment, this looks like your iCal and Address book on your mac will remain empty but I will keep playing with the sync settings in iTunes until I find the way forward.
Still waiting for Apple to come up with a "private" setting for calendar entries like always happened when I added calendar events to my Nokia E60. I don't want work seeing what is going on there really. Unless, of course, there is another setting that I am missing for this.
    Cheers

  • Apple TV Newbie Syncing Question/

I'm getting an Apple TV tomorrow, and I'm just wondering if the only way to sync it with iTunes is over my network, or can I do it as I would with my iPhone or iPod?
    Thanks

I've had this ATV for a couple of years. I did a 3.0 update and saw some of my content from iTunes that was on my ATV disappear.
I updated my software to 3.0.1 and then checked content - no change. I decided to disconnect ATV from iTunes (in settings on ATV) and reconnect. This had the effect of wiping all content off of my ATV.
In trying to re sync over wireless, my old problem of the airport wireless dropping the connection has reappeared. This only seems to happen on the initial sync. I concluded the simplest way (and the fastest would be to sync the first time over a hardwire connection.
You mentioned that I need a cross over cable. Is this different than a standard ethernet network cable? When connecting with a standard network cable and not connected to a TV at the same time ATV does not show a green light and doesn't show up in iTunes.

  • Duplication of events in Entourage/iCal from syncing iPhone

Okay, I am sick to death of this..... I have all the latest software - Entourage 8, OS 10.5.5, iPhone 2.2.... When I sync, iCal is not smart enough to recognize that events in Entourage are the same events... and Entourage is the same way, so I have ended up with as few as three and as many as 35 of the same event on a given day. I have changed every setting I can find. Also, although I've told iCal to delete tasks & events over 30 days old, it's not doing it.... so the cycle is perpetuated and I end up with MORE of the same event on my calendar.
does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? And why in God's name won't iPhone just sync with Entourage without the middle man of iCal and Address Book?
    Thank you!

Okay, here is what I've found.
First thought two disclaimers: 1. I am no tech support person - by any means. 2. I'm not even sure if I can recall how I corrected this since I had to go back and forth in so many settings so many times (spending 80 minutes on the phone with a tech support buddy of mine).
    But, here goes:
iPhone has to use iCal to sync with Entourage. It's a work around, it *****, but that's the way it goes.
So open iCal and make sure that there is only one Entourage calendar that has been created (there should be a list of calendars with check boxes on the left side), if there are two or more, delete the extra ones (right click, choose delete). I think that if you look in Entourage preferences and under Sync Preferences ever clicked 'sync to iCal' off and then on again, you may have created a second Entourage calendar in the process. When I was doing this, I accidently deleted the original Entourage calendar that I had and the one left over was actually empty - which may have helped me in this process to start 'fresh' and perhaps stop the constant loop of repopulating events between iCal and Entourage.
Make sure that in Entourage preferences under Sync Preferences 'sync to address book' and 'sync to iCal' are both clicked on.
In iSync Preferences, I had to reset the sync history there and start all over again then hit sync on iTunes.
Leave iCal preferences alone. They should be fine.
If ever told there is a conflict in your syncing the calenders, choose Entourage over iCal for all (if this is an option - at first for me, it wasn't and only iCal and iSync were listed as options until eventually, somehow, one popped up with the options of both iCal and Entourage).
If/when given the option to use Entourage as the primary source, iCal as the primary source, or merge the two, choosing merge should allow you to either update your phone or Entourage and have it populate the other. Choosing 'entourage' will only allow you to update entourage and have your phone sync, but not the other way around.
The worst part of all this? I've found no work around to delete the extra events listed in Entourage. You still have to delete the new ones by hand, one by one, even if the above fix works.
I can unfortunately pretty much guarantee that I've missed several key points, verbatim language, or even a modicum of logical steps in the above, but again I was going back and forth so many times that I can't even begin to tell you how best to solve this in a linear manner. I'm hoping that this provides a little direction, maybe you post a follow-up question (or eight), and then I can provide a few more tidbits to hopefully get you back out of this miserable loop of re-populating events.
    Good luck!

  • Ical not syncing with Mac.

I can't seem to get my ical to sync between my iphone and Mac.  I would like to use the restore however, whilst my itunes tells me it backs up to the computer I cannot locate the information.  I do not wish to use icloud

    Hi Tayfit -
I searched this question and found a solution that worked for me on another forum here. I use OS 10.6.8 on an iMac with Intel Core, and an iPhone 4. I do not wish to use iCloud for syncing either. I had many duplication problems when I attempted to use iCloud, in contacts and in ical, so I deleted for days and dropped the iCloud. My iPhone does seem to sync with iCal on the iMac, but the iMac calendars didn't all sync with the iPhone. I use iTunes to sync. Here is what I did:
In the folder /users/<---YOUR USERNAME--->/Library/Calendars, I deleted "Calendar Cache" and "Calendar Sync Changes" ....
That's all I did. I had tried the terminal reset option listed in the Apple Support questions, but that was to address the screw up post iCloud use, and that didn't fix my issue.
Best of luck. I hope this helps you.

  • In ical no sync from MBAir to iphone

Found the solution: in the settings select icloud calender as the default.

  • Events not showing in iCal after sync with iPhone

A whole week of appointments don't show up in iCal after syncing with my iPhone - all the appointments are on my iPhone but they won't copy over.
Funnily enough, the week that is not showing up is changing every Monday...
    Anyone seen this before?

I found this solution in another discussion. It's from this website: http://iphonewriter.blogspot.co.nz/2008/05/how-to-fixing-ical-iphone-sync-issues .html)
"You'll know the syncing issue when you see it, because the new events you enter into the Calendar on your Apple iPhone will not appear in iCal. Said another way, you'll enter a new event into your iPhone, use iTunes to sync with your Mac (or MacBook in our case) and the new event on your iPhone will not show up in iCal. Keep trying, synch as you might, iCal and the Apple iPhone just won't get along.
Here's the down and dirty fix:
Open iCal and backup or export your entries. Make a note of the fie name and location, you're going to need them in a minute. Once your backup/export is completed, close the iCal application.
Open Finder and remove everything inside the "Username/Library/Calendars" folder. For instance, if your username is "Joe", then move everything inside the "Joe/Library/Calendars" folder.
Open the iSync application. It's located in the "/Applications/" folder. Once iSync is opened, go into the iSync Preferences (iSync -> Preferences) and push/click the "Reset Sync History" button. Then, close the iSync application.
Re-Open the iCal application and Restore your calendar. When prompted, use your notes from Step #1 to select the file your created earlier.
At this point all my appointments were showing up properly in iCal, and did not disappear after syncing again with the iPhone.

  • ICal not syncing w/ mobileme

iCal has stopped syncing with Mobileme. When I try to sync I get the error message "Calendars could not be synced due to inconsistent data. Confirm that your computer's data is valid, then reset Calendars on MobileMe in System Preferences." I have unchecked Calendars in Syst Prefs, synced, rechecked, and synced and it does not work. How can I resolve this and sync it?

I am having the same problem with iCal not syncing. I have 3 Macs (iMac, Macbook, and G5 Tower) that are all normally synced using MobileMe and 2 iPhones that sync as well, but the computers just stopped syncing the other day. It seems to be an Apple problem but I don't know how to remedy it. I've tried what has worked for some other folks here where you changed the sync to the computer from the mobile me in sys prefs but once the main computer that holds the calendar has a change it messes up the others again. It's becoming very frustrating and I can't seem to get to the proper link on the support pages to get an Apple tech to help. I noticed on the Mobile Me page it says that they did an update the other day that could affect peoples syncing but it says it's now resolved. Not for me, anyone has any thoughts I'd sure appreciate it.

  • Why does ical not sync to MobileMe?

Since Lion, iCal is syncing only the first 4-5 events after adding the MobileMe Account.
After that, the syncing whell is running endless.
    Specs are:
    MobileMe:
6 x Calendars, 5 are published and shared with other Mac Users
    Shared with other Users:
    3 x Calendars
    Abonemment:
2 x Calendars (Birthday by system and Calendar week)
    Replicate problem:
I erased the entire account from iCal and from MobileMe on the Mac as well. After that I added the Mobile Me Account and the MobileMe Account at iCal. iCal synced all events accuratley but after the creation of further 4-5 events, iCal hangs by a running wheel to sync to Mobile Me. I can create further Events but it doesn't make sense, because the events will not be synced through mobiel me for my other iOS devices like iPohne and iPad.
Events created in iOS via iPhone or iPad will be synced between those devices through MobileMe but iCal doesn't sync.
Who knows help. Remember: I did erase the entire account and set it up new: doesn't help.
    Comments?

    Hi All
The MobileMe senior advisor resolved my problem! Thanks so much Cxxxx!
    Here the instructions:
    1. Open Terminal and use this command to copy the Calendars folder from ~/Library to your Desktop:
    cp -r ~/Library/Calendars ~/Desktop
    2. Open Disk Utility and create a new Disk Image from the Calendars folder on your Desktop by selecting File > New > Disk Image from Folder and then choosing the Calendars folder on your Desktop.
    3. Save the new Disk Image to your Desktop as well.
    4. Double-click the Calendars.dmg to open it.
    5. In the new window that appears choose View > Show Toolbar from the Finder View menu.
    6. In the Search field on the Toolbar enter "%" (without quotation marks).
    7. Select "Filename contains %" when prompted by the Search pop-up.
    8. Make sure the Search location is set to Calendars.
    9. Then open the ICS files returned in a text editor such as BBEdit or TextEdit.
    10. Locate the SUMMARY field (that's the event name).
    11. Note the affected event name(s) in a text editor.
    12. Lookup the affected events one by one in iCal. Note the date of the events in the same document that has the name(s).
    13. Quit iCal when all the event dates are collected.
    14. Go to me.com/calendar
    15. Delete all iterations of matched events from me.com/Calendar
Once the problematic events have been deleted, you will then be able to sync to your iCal application without issue. Once syncing has been restored, you can then add back any events that you need to.
    Hope that helps!
    Life is good again

  • Google Calendar alarms not working in iCal when synced via delegation

If I set up syncing to my shared Google calendars using Google's Calaboration app, I get a half dozen or more "Request Error, Calendar could not be found" messages a day along with the annoying bouncing iCal icon in the dock.
If I set up syncing via the delegation method — as per Google's general syncing instructions (http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=99358#ical) as well as this Google Calendar forums thread (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Calendar/thread?tid=210c119ea4d2d37e&hl=en) — iCal fails to display event alarms (i.e., the pop-up alert window).
I need the alarms, so the only thing I can think to do is to tell iCal to sync with gCal less frequently.

    Hi Guys,
Having something similar here with Google and ical, seems to be related to when using Google Enterprise Apps for me and a third party provider is in use. In this case a SAML provider. It allows me to get to a login page and asks me which Apps I would like to allow to access my Google Calendar. Once I have made my selections and hit ok it then gives me a pop up message saying that authentication has failed. This is strange as I have had to authenticate with Google to be able to access the application sync in the first place.

  • How to clear all details in iCal before syncing with Entourage?

Deary me! I have been back and forth to iCal and Entourage trying to find which would be best. I have decided that Entourage will suffice - although not perfect by any means. In the meantime I have completely jammed up my iCal and daren't not try syncing Entourage yet otherwise I will never understand it and my iphone will be full of toot! Anyone know how to clear all details in iCal before syncing with Entourage? (Happy Sundays!!)

Answer .... delete all calendars in iCal but leave the Entourage one there! Don't delete that as there will be big trouble!

  • All info lost suddenly in Ical, no sync with gmail

My calendar went suddenly blank (removed all previous input)
    - OSX 10.9
    - Calender 7.0 (1835)
Sync. with calendar in Google Gmail (this is working perfect), ipad (calender seems to be ok here)
I think it is  a big problem when my calender is suddenly wiped out without me doing anything,
Should I drop apple mail and calender or ??
Ihave checked for sync. with Icloud..any good idea or fix?

I have an a HTC Android phone, and an LG Andriod before the HTC, and both have no problems integrating with my mail providers, my Windows PCs and my Mac. I add a contact on my phone or on any of the computers, even the OS X Contacts (Lion) or Address book (Mt Lion), and it shows up across all other devices. I add a calendar event on my phone or on my PCs or online at Google and it shows up on all other devices. This even happens when I add in on my Mac if I add that event to my calendar in Thunderbird.
The only time it doesn't happen is when I add it to the built in Apple Mac ICal (Calendar) program.
I don't see how getting an iPhone would help the OP with the problem of iCal not syncing Up TO Google calendar. That is clearly a iCal problem and has nothing to do with the phone he is using.

I would strongly recommend an iPhone. The integration with the Mac and email services is just phenomenal.

  • ICal not syncing correctly with MobileMe

For the last week or so, ever since MobileMe was being updated, my iCal synching with MobileMe and iPhone has stopped working correctly. When I enter a meeting into iCal, it syncs to MobileMe and therefore my iPhone.
HOWEVER, any new calendar entries from the iPhone (or MobileMe's website directly), do not show up on iCal even after i try to manually Sync them. Furthermore, if I change the time of a meeting or call on iCal, a DUPLICATE meeting is created in MobileMe, thus polluting my calendar on the iPhone and MobileMe with multiple entries. When I am on the road, I can't figure out which is the correct meeting anymore.
Not sure if this is due to new iTunes or the update with MobileMe servers last week.
Here is what I have done to troubleshoot this to date:
    - In MobileMe preferences, I stopped synching my MacBook with MobileMe and wiped out all of the data on MobileMe. I rebooted my MacBook, then, I Reset Sync Data from iCal to MobileMe. It seeded fine, but still doesn't show any appointments created from the iPhone or within MobileMe on my iCal after re-syncing.
    - I deleted my MobileMe account on my iPhone. Rebooted iPhone. Re-added my MobileMe account to the iphone and synched the calendar. The calendar syncs and shows up, but still no appointments created on my iPhone or within MobileMe show on my iCal.
    - I have also tried to NARROW the variables of my issue by not synching ANYTHING ELSE other than iCal (no contacts, mail settings etc.). To No avail, still doesn't work.
Any suggestions?? I sense there is something cached in the bowels of my iCal settings, but have no idea to re-set them to re-enable synching.

I solved the issue. I took a risk and wiped my MobileMe account clean one last time, then RESET SYNCH Data from my MacBook to MobileMe.
Then, I crossed my fingers and deleted my calendars on my iCal desktop.
I then, chose RESET SYNCH Data FROM MobileMe TO MacBook pro - effectively overwriting my iCal with the same data I just uploaded into MobileMe.
The result? Everything started working again. I added meetings to my calendar with my iPhone and they showed up on my iCal Desktop (MacBook). Yeah!
