Ical not in login items but opening at startup

is anyone else experiencing this issue? i got an error message for my sync services and once that was fixed my ical is opening at startup but it's not in my login items. i went into my login items and added it and then removed it trying to trick my machine but it didn't work.
on a side note, all of a sudden a copy of my idisk is showing up on my desktop and it hasn't been there for quite some time.
i wonder if there's an issue with one of my volumes or a database/preference issue?

That is normal in Lion and Mountain Lion. Those systems try to reopen any apps that were open when you shut down. To stop that from happening, simply uncheck the box in the shut down dialog:

If you do not lock that folder immediately after deleting all the contents, it will simply populate again (Resume - a "feature" in Lion). You do that by doing a Get Info (highlight folder and press Command + I keys), unlock the lock at the bottom, enter your admin password, then check the box to lock the folder. lock the lock and you're done.
Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

    And, for the OP:
It has also been a regular feature of Mac OS to automatically open any window that was open at shutdown. To avoit that behavior, simply close any Finder windows and  properly quit applications by closing their window and using Command + Q (or File >Quit).
This was true only for the Finder. Prior to Lion, no other apps would launch unless they were included in the Login Items for the account. And the OS would not restore windows for other apps.
A very small number of apps (TextWrangler is an example) implemented this capability prior to Lion. They could restore previously opened windows. But that is an application feature, and can be controlled by the application's preferences. Lion implements it at the system level, and users have virtually no control on a per application basis.

    Hi,
I've removed two apps from my login items lists. But they still open whenever I log in. What do I need to do to really kill them dead?

Did you perhaps just uncheck them?
You need to highlight one and hit the little minus icon .

  • Safari, not a Login item, starts up automatically

. . . with a blank page instead of the selected home page. The only Login items for my account are:
    AdobeResourceSynchronizer (with its "Kind" unrecognized)
    Dropbox
Mouseworks Background (for an old Turbomouse)
    XPSLauncher
This is my work machine and was recently upgraded to OS 10.6. The Safari automatic load issue may have started with the upgrade, but I'm not sure. There's no real productivity problem this is giving me. It's just annoying. If anyone knows what this might be related to, I'm much obliged.

    Hello Mr Hemphill
Thank you for such a speedy response, I see you have been very busy today.  I too use wi-fi, which connects instantaneously and therefore I do not accept this as a valid reason especially as I did not experience this problem with my old Mac which had quite a poor wi-fi service.  And even if it were to be the case those of us who do not have slow wi-fi connection should not be penalised for the sake of those that do - all they need do is not use this option for Safari.
When Apple Support told me that "this is as it should be" I asked why System Preferences allows Safari to be selected in the first place.  They had no answer.  I also note from previous discussions that this problem started long ago.  There must be a more valid reason.
    Best regards

Sorry, it seems that the responsible people are too busy with other tasks.
I had raised the lacking presence to someone in that area 3 months back - and he confirmed that they need to engage more, but apparently that didn't come true yet to the extent it should.
    I'll try again.

  • ITunes will not sync with iPod, but opens MS Outlook '03

When I try to sync my iPod (5th Gen 30GB Vid) with my iTunes (ver: 7.1.1.5) I get the following error: "Attempting to copy to the disk "MOM'S IPOD" failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation. iTunes could not save to your Music Folder because you do not have write access. Check the permissions on your Music Folder and folders in your Music Folder, then try copying this file again." Also, for some reason, Outlook 03 opens. I removed Outlook, and still recieved the same error, but this time Outlook didn't open. I also removed iTunes, Quicktime, and Apple Updater. I removed all iTunes entries from the registry, and rebooted. I downloaded iTunes 7.1.1.5 to my hard drive and re-installed all the iTunes stuff again. The error still occurrs. Any suggestions?

Searched registry for every iTunes entry and deleted them
    Rebooted computer
Searched C drive for anything with iTunes in the name and deleted them
    Emptyed the recycle bin
    Rebooted computer
    Downloaded iTunes 7.1 again
    installed iTunes
    Syncs like a champ

  • Not getting header item in Open Hub Destnation.

    Hi Experts,
when i am generating flatfile by using Open hub destination to my Desktop location, i am not getting the headers.
How can i get the headers in my xcel out put?

    HI,
When Open hub destination is executed by using a 'xl' file the headder will be copyed to another
xl file. If u want to get the headder and  records at one place , u can make use of Database Table to run
Open hub destination. so a table name will be genarated with the following name as
/BIC/XXXXXXXX     ( NAME OF THE OPEN HUB DESTINATION ). so  headder and records will be seen
    in this table.

  • Login items - not in user prefs

My wonderful imac os x - tiger 10.4.7 opens 3 items (safari, mail and ichat) that are not in the startup items list.
As the initial login takes ages I want to remove them, but as they don't appear in the list under accounts/login items I can't.
I have tried adding them so they do appear and then deleting them, but that doesn't fix it, they still open on login.
Any ideas how I can fix this.

"Login Items" can be specified in at least three different places. The usual one (written to by the "Accounts" pref pane) is the "~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist" file in each user's "home" folder, but if the items aren't appearing in the pref pane, they are probably listed in one of the other locations.
The other user-specific file is in the "~/Library/Preferences/ByHost" folder, and is called the "loginwindow.xxx.plist" file, where the "xxx" usually represents the MAC address of the built-in ethernet card, so will vary from computer to computer. If present, try moving or deleting that file to see if that prevents the unwanted items from opening.
The computer's main "/Library/Preferences" folder can also contain a "loginwindow.plist" file, but any items listed in that file will open at login for all users. "Admin" privileges will usually be required to remove or make changes to this file.
Also, note that a computer's administrator can set up "login items" for "managed" users, through 'mcx_settings'. Again, this isn't something that an individual user can override themselves.
This probably isn't what you are after, but unless explicitly prohibited in 'mcx_settings', it also is possible during any given log in to prevent login items from opening by holding down the "Shift" key while logging in, but it would be necessary to do this every time.

  • Wi-Fi Connection Issue at Startup When NAS configured as Login Item

    Hi!
I recently ran into internet connection issue during startup. I managed to find the culprit (it's the firewall) but I believe there should be more behind just blaming the firewall for it.
Before I go any further, it would be best if I try to explain the setup that I have. Also, note that I'm a newbie when it comes to terms like DHCP, IP address, IPv4, IPv6, etc. I think I may have an idea what they do, but I'm not quite sure whether that idea jibes with the real thing. Whatever. Anyways, here's the setup.
For the internet connection at my place, I use a Cisco wifi router and an Airport Extreme Base Station. The Cisco router has been set up to have its own wi-fi network, while the Airport Extreme Base Station is connected to the Cisco router using ethernet. I set up a separate wi-fi network for the Airport Extreme Base Station and almost all of my devices are connected using the Airport Extreme's wi-fi network.
I have 3 external hard drives connected to a USB hub, which in turn is connected to the Airport Extreme base station.
2 Macbooks. One is a white, late 2007 MacBook running Lion. The other is a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. I turned the firewall on for both Macbooks.
Initially, there was no problem connecting to the internet and also the 3 external hard drives from the Airport Extreme. I did the wireless connecting to the external hard drives manually after startup (open finder > navigate to airport extreme at the sidebar > click on the hard drives one by one until the eject icon and folders are shown). You can imagine how soon this got annoying for me (yeah, I shutdown my macbooks everytime I finish with them, it's a habit). So I put these external hard drives as a login item at startup (in the system preference setting for accounts) so that I won't have to do this everytime I start my macbooks.
This is where it got interesting.
For my MBPro, during startup the wi-fi icon at the menu bar will show that it was trying to connect and then the '!' symbol is shown. When I go to system preference > network, there was a message about self-assigned IP. I notice that it starts with 169, which is not the usual IP assigned to devices in my home network. This, however, usually did not last long. Soon enough the '!' symbol is gone and the wi-fi connection becomes normal with finder windows popping up showing folders for the external drives. It's a minor annoyance, waiting for the '!' symbol to go away (I think it got something to do with DHCP settings sent from the router and the self-assigned IP address, but again I'm not sure), but at least the MBPro can connect in the end.
For my white MB though, things didn't go well. The '!' remains in the wi-fi icon and there was no internet connection, no matter how long I waited. Even after removing the external drives from login items the problem persists during startup. If I remember correctly sometimes there is a pop-up saying that the computer could not connect to the airport extreme server (this also happens on the MBPro).
I initially tried resetting the wi-fi setup (removing the network from the list of known network in system preference > network, removing the wi-fi network password from keychain access) to no avail (in both macbooks). As mentioned above, I also tried to remove the network hard drives from login item but even after that the connection problem persisted in my white Macbook, while the MBPro initially showed the same symptom before finally managing to connect with the proper IP address.
Finally, after googling through forums some people suggested that turning off the firewall might work. I did so, and voila, it did remedy the situation. Both Macbooks manage to connect to the internet during startup without any fuss, and both even manage to connect to the network drives during startup (I put them in again as login items to see if it would cause further trouble).
So, the firewall was the culprit. But it only started acting up AFTER I put the network drives as login items.
Can anyone explain the cause of this?
    Anyways, thanks for reading!

Make sure you are using the passkey found on the Homehub and not your email password. You may need to "Forget" the connection on the phone and scan again then enter passkey.

  • Login Items connect to server in 10.5.6

When you select a server volume in System Preferences / Accounts / Login items / to open a directory on a network server every time you log in, in system 10.5.5 and earlier the directory will be automatically opened on your desktop after startup.
Not any more in system 10.5.6. The connection is made but the map will not be automatically openened any more (even when "hide" is not selected).

Sounds like a tip that you should post to the server forums. Unless I missed something, there doesn't appear to be a question in your post.

  • Security Update 2007-04 Broke my Mouse/Keyboard Settings and Login Items

Any help would be more than appreciated; this is not a tragic issue, but it's annoying and I dislike having things broken, especially because this old Mac has been pretty much trouble-free for me over the years.
On the first reboot after installing Security Update 2007-04 in OS X 10.4.9 I noticed that my login items (iCal, A-Dock) did not launch, and that my mouse cursor and keyboard speed settings had reverted to the default "slow" speeds.
The login items were still present in their normal place (System > Accounts > Login Items), but do not launch after a login/logout or reboot. (The items launch fine manually, though.) Similarly, I can change the keyboard and mouse settings (both are Apple Pro devices), but these settings revert upon rebooting.
As per usual I repaired permissions immediately before and after installing Security Update, and I had nothing running while the update was in progress. I tried deleting and resetting the login items to no avail; the new choices appear in system preferences, but do not launch anything on login.
I've cleared all caches using Yasu, I reinstalled 10.4.9 using the Combo updater, and still I go back to square one when I reboot. I even deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist ; that didn't do anything, either.

So, reinstalling the combo 10.4.9 didn't fix it, neither did installing today's Apple Security Update 2007-004v1.1, neither did resetting the PRAM, neither did numerous series of cache clearing, nor deleting all login startup items.
Any ideas, folks? Apart from simply not restarting (which I seldom need to do anyway), I don't like having things broken, and having to reset my mouse and keyboard speed settings after a restart is tedious, let along not having anything launch automatically.
