ICal Read Only

I've spent quite some time looking through the discussions but can't find what i need.
I am a new Mac user. I just purchased the Tiger version & have only had it for 2 days. After setting up the essentials, I went to try iCal today but discovered that it is a read only file. (I've looked at Ownership & Permission in iCal Info).
I didn't subscribe to any sort of calendar (which seems to be a suggestion that arises repeatedly). This came with my machine & i really don't see much point in having it on there at all if i can't use it!!
Any suggestions? There's bound to be some way to fix this . . . and i sure would like to know how.
P.S.: Other than this "little" glitch, I love my iMac & am glad I switched!

Have you tried to create a new calendar? If so, are you able to read and write to new new one?
You mentioned that you checked the permissions for the calendar file. How did you do this, and what did you see?
The reason I ask is that you mentioned that you are a new Mac user, and permissions are handled a little differently than in Windows. The calendar files are located in the iCal folder inside Application Support in your user library. (home folder > Library > Application Support > iCal). The folder names inside the iCal directory won't make much sense, but if you only have one calendar, it should be pretty easy to find.
Make sure that the calendar's folder and all of the files inside of that folder are read & write for your user account.

  • How do i shut off the read-only mode in iCal?

I don't what happened but suddenly I cannot add any new entries to my iCal. I get a error prompt that says, "READ-ONLY CALENDAR - You cannot change events or To Do in a read-only calendar." How do I disable this read-only feature so I can use my iCal again. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hyun, I suspect you just need to select another calendar in the panel on the left (eg Home). Subscribed to, and iCal Birthday calendars are read-only.

  • Automator plug-in added to read-only calendar in iCal

I was trying the 'Tiger Tip of the Week' about creating an Automator workflow saved as an iCal Alarm plug-in. Unfortunately, it added it to the 'Holidays' calendar, which is read-only. I found where the plug-in was saved in my library and deleted it, but the 'Boston Globe' event was still on my calendar. Luckily, I was able to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to the US Holidays shared calendar and make it disappear, but what did I do wrong? I didn't have any options available when saving as a plug-in.

One way I've gotten around some weird problems like this in the past is to export my calendars to the Desktop, and then re-import them back into iCal. I'm not sure if this will work for you, however. You also might try backing up and restoring via File->Back up iCal... . Hope that helps.
Edit: if the problem is related to a calendar you've published, Apple offers these suggestions (from iCal Help):
    ■ If you want to change events on a calendar that you published on the Internet, but you’ve deleted the calendar from your Calendars list, you need to re-create the calendar with all its events, give it the same name as the published calendar, and then publish the new calendar. The new calendar will replace the previously published one.
    ■ If you can’t change an event for which you are the organizer, or you can’t change the attendee settings for an event you’ve been invited to, make sure all your email addresses are listed on your Address Book card (the card marked “me”).

  • SL Read Only Group Calendars in iCal?

We've been using the wiki-based group calendars for a bit with SSL and/or Kerberos AD logins. Now I have a request that:
    *Only some people can read.
    *Only some people can read/write.
    *Using AD credentials (Win2k8)
    *All via iCal on 10.5
I found how to set users/groups to Read Only in the Wiki interface, but when that happens, it never takes the login credentials. When used as an account(http://servername:8008/principals/wikis/groupname/), it won't take. When used via Subscribe to Calendar (webcal://servername:8008/calendars/_uids_/wiki-groupname/calendar) it won't take. (The subscribe info comes from the wiki interface "i" box.)
    What am I missing here?

No, at the time I am writing this the topic is not answered. Simply applying the 10.5.6 combo update did not work for me when I had this problem.
This did NOT work either - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1906?viewlocale=en_US.
    This is what worked:
    0) make sure both iCal and Mail are closed, and it might not be a bad idea to temporarily shut off any syncing software you may have active
    1) start with the calendar folders from Tiger that are located in Users/{yourusername}/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources, the ones with crazy names like "2E28E612-467E-4981-975E-D07A31AC39C4.calendar" which contain files" called "corestorage.ics," "Index," and "info.plist"; if "all" you have is an iCal backup library (.icbu file), then you can go to a Tiger machine, restore to that iCal, and then take the above calendar folders from it
    2) copy the calendar folders to the desktop of your Leopard machine
    3) read this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1196389&tstart=0) down to the posts by Thierry Girard
    4) do what he says with the text editor, but you can use TextEdit, and look for either the SEQUENCE:-1 or the PRIORITY:-1. Set either one to just 1 (remove the negative sign); I had some value related to a MICROSOFT this or that, and I did not change it at all.
    5) take the edited calendar folders from your desktop and move them into /Users/{yourusername}/Library/Calendars
    6) start up iCal; at this point, I was in business
    I hope this is helpful.

  • ICal changed itself to Read-Only

This has happened several times now. My iCal calendar that I work in every day to plan my appointmants, to do list, etc. suddenly in the middle of adding an appointment tells me that I cannot add anything because it is a Read-Only calendar. It will no longer allow me to add apoointments, events, to do items, or anything else.
I checked my prefernces and found nothing changed. I restarted and shut down and restarted.
The last time I got an update, the problem disappeared until today.
Anyone have an idea what is going on?

You have one or more read-only calendars in the left sidebar—generally, these are subscribed calendars—and one or more of them is selected. More than one of your calendars in this list is enabled, and you're seeing many events from separate calendars in a single view.
Remember that visually, all of these calendar views are layered. The one selected in the sidebar should be the one you want to enter data into. If a read-only is selected, the disallow message will appear.

  • Tried to backup iCal now it's a READ-ONLY calendar! Help!!!

I tried to backup my calendar before I attempt to install the Missing Sync to link my iCal to my Blackberry..I ended up getting a calendar with Most of my entries duplicated and now my calendar says its "read-only" so I can't modify it..I TOTALLY depend on my calendar for my livelihood and can't afford to lose my calendar data for the last 3 years....Can I undo what I've done?????? Thank you! Trishann

    Trishann,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I tried to backup my calendar before I attempt to install the Missing Sync to link my iCal to my Blackberry..Can I undo what I've done??????
How did you backup your calendar, i.e. what do you have for an iCal backup.
How many calendars do you have?
    Are any of them subscribed/birthdays?
iCal Help Topic "If you can't change an event or calendar" says:
If you can’t change an event or calendar, check the following:
If it’s a calendar to which you’ve subscribed, you can change the calendar name but you can’t change its events or to-do items.
If you were invited to an event, you can change only your status for the event, the calendar where the event appears, and the event alarm.
You can’t change or delete events on the Birthdays calendar. (To show the Birthdays calendar, select “Show Birthdays calendar” in iCal preferences.) To change the birthdays that appear, open Address Book (in your Applications folder) and make your changes there. For more information, in Address Book choose Help > Address Book Help.
    Open Address Book
If you can’t change a single event’s time zone or the iCal time zone, time zone support may be turned off. Choose iCal > Preferences, click Advanced, and then make sure the “Turn on time zone support” checkbox is selected.
If you want to change events on a calendar that you published on the Internet, but you’ve deleted the calendar from your Calendars list, you need to re-create the calendar with all its events, give it the same name as the published calendar, and then publish the new calendar. The new calendar will replace the previously published one.
If you can’t change an event for which you are the organizer, or you can’t change the attendee settings for an event you’ve been invited to, make sure all your email addresses are listed on your Address Book card (the card marked “me”).
If you do not get any answers here, I would recommend that you contact Missing Sync Support Center for help.

  • Set Mobile me read only ical

I would like others to be able to log into my ical through mobile me as read-only and not have any access at all to the other applications such as contacts idisk, email, etc.
Is there as way to set MobileMe for this type of usage?

you can do that by calling class method CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_SET_ATTRIBUTES exporting parameter READONLY
note: this will work only in the foreground, it is not possible to do it in a background job

  • Is ical "sharing" always read-only?

I assist an MIT professor who uses the ical software, and I use Windows XP. I need the ability to edit his calendar by "suggesting" a meeting that he can either accept or reject and that is clearly "from" me. Is this possible? If it is, how does the software deal with issues of synchronizing--i.e., if I suggest a mtng on a calendar that hasn't yet been synced up with his Palm that day, will his calendar automatically catch new conflicts when it is synced?
I read the thread posted about users sharing a synced calendar, and it doesn't sound promising. Any new ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Isadora

The answer to your basic question is that an iCal that is published by its originator is always read only to those viewing it - either on the web or as a subscription in iCal.
If you use Outlook, you could try making your suggestions in the form of meeting requests (perhaps in a dedicated calendar on your 'side'?)
There's an explanation about what happens at the iCal end here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iCal/2.0/en/wr41.html
I can't be much more precise because I don't have the Windows equipment to verify how well this works.

  • ICal became unexpectedly "Read-Only"

iCal unexpectedly became "Read-Only". This is on my main computer that I do all my work, which gets synced through .Mac with home back-up.
What the heck happened, and more importantly, how do I fix it?
(I have already tried restarting and repairing permissions, to no avail)

    Hi,
If you haven't already, it might be worth trying deleting the preferences.
Close iCal and go to your user Library/Preferences and delete these files:
    com.apple.iCal.alarmsCache.plist
    com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist
    com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
    com.apple.iCal.plist

  • ICal is Read Only

    Hi,
My Birthday iCal has somehow become "Read Only". How this happened, I have no idea.
Short of deleting it and starting again, has anyone had this problem before and found a solution"?
    Many thanks
    Cheers
    Roger

    Hi Austin,
Thank you for the response. Actually, I did not have any entries in the calendar. I was trying to create a birthday reminder but could not change it from the "Read Only" mode. Finally, in frustration, I deleted the calendar and created a new one. This one was OK.
Again, my sincere thanks for your help.
    Cheers

  • How can I get a birthday reminder from items which are in the read-only cal

I am looking for a solution to get a reminder message for birtdays which are within the read-only calender imported/updated from he address book. I so far have not found the option where to turn on the reminder and I do not want to duplicate items (ie creating another birthday calender inside iCal).
    Thanks for comments.

    Hi ontour,
This limitation is one of the many reasons I wrote Dates to iCal. It is a replacement for the Birthdays calendar in iCal, so you would need to turn the Birthdays calendar off in iCal's preferences.

  • Read Only Calendars are no longer showing up in the Delegates listing

Earlier this week I had a Calendar (the boss's calendar), disappear from all the users that had Read Only access. All of the users that had Read/Write access can still see the Calendar. A couple of days later, I had another Read Only Calendar disappear from users iCal.
Our Calendar data is stored on a Snow Leopard Server based XServe using Apple's built in iCal Server. The calendars that are diappearing no longer appear in the Delegation tab of the Accounts section on the User's individual iCal app preferences. If I move the user to the Read/Write group, the calendars re-appear.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi David,
Are there any iCal logs that you could share that would give a hint of the problem?
Are you using Mobile Access on that same server?

  • Cant edit birthday calendar (read-only)

    Hello,
im pretty new to iCal, just started today.
i recognised it imports / offers a calendar for each location you have on your mac os X.
in prefs i found the additional birthday calendar option.
after enabling it, i was wondering why i cant edit it.
"you cannot change events or toDo in a read-only calendar"
i hoped the type birthday calendar offers my the option to use all inserts i did for all coming years.
any ideas howto solve that read-only status ?
    best regards
    fidel

    Hi fidel,
iCal's birthday calendar takes it's data from birthdays you put into Address Book. It is not editable from within iCal.
    Best wishes

  • How do I change the color of a subscribed read-only calendar?

When I subscribe to Google's read-only "US Holidays" calendar using http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/en.usa%23holiday%40group.v.calendar.google.c om/public/basic.ics my iPhone/iPad see the calendar just fine. However, it is light gray and I can't change the color. Is there a way to change the color of that subscribed calendar?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Thanks Austin. I know of one place where you can, which is during the process of first subscribing to the shared calendar. The import dialog shows the calendar's color and you can change it at that point.
I found this out only after posting my question, and it doesn't really provide a solution to my question; but your answer does seem to support my intial observation.
