ICal Refuses Login
I have Server 10.6.4 and applied the most recent security update and since then OD users cannot view their iCal accounts.
OD seems to be working, AddressBook can look up their info, they can log in using AFP, etc. Everything except iCal. This was working well up until two weeks ago and now things are getting very frustrating in not being able to access all the shared calendars!
In Server Admin, Calendar is running. Authentication is "Any Method", SSL is Redirect and the certificate is in existence and seems to be working for iMap SSL
If iCal is on a client and tries to update it claims "Server did not recognize your user name or password for account " XXXX". XXX is the name I gave to the account in iCal when I setup the accounts. In iCal I have XXXX, user name and password that work for AFP for example and the server address DNS name, path that has been working until now "/principals/uids/YYYYYYYY-YYYY-YYYY-YYYY-YYYYYYYYYYYY/", port 8443 and "Use SSL" is checked.
The server is a standalone OD server. ldapsearch seems to be able to access it.
What am I missing?
Still responds that the server does not recognize my account or password. It does not ask me for a new password. So I am guessing that the server does not recognize my OD credentials as an account.
In one of these upgrades has the URL for this changed from uids to users/<user name>? In searching the forums it was suggested that I go to https://mycalendar.server.edu:8443/calendars/users/
and look for user accounts. The web server has no access to this page. The parent page of calendars loads but not any of the pages further down that are only accessible by the _calendar user and _calendar group.
Further there is an article on delegating access to resources and locations, but this gives unknown items when I try it.

After updating to Lion 10.7.5, iCal refuses to work: won't change day/week/month, no previously entered appointments shown, can't add any new ones either. Now what? Of course, I have no backup (didn't think I needed to with iCloud). Aim is 1) to restore function, then 2) populate back from iPod Touch Any help appreciated.

I'll just address the backup issue, iCloud is NOT a backup system, you still need one. -
Automatically launching iCal at Login: is it a drain on system resources?
Since the persistent "July 17" iCal icon bugs me, I was thinking of having iCal automatically launch (hidden) at login.
Can anyone knowledgable of such things comment on if keeping iCal running all the time would be a drain on system resources?
I know the origin of the JUL 17 (the day iCal was first launched), but it's sort of a useless thing to note for anyone of than iCal software developers and Apple execs.Argelius,
I run iCal continuously and find that it has no adverse effect on my system performance, but depending upon many variables starting with RAM your mileage may vary. When hidden, iCal uses 0.00% of the CPU.
One of the best ways for you to determine the efficacy of an iCal automatic login with a continuously running but hidden iCal is to give it a try. If your system performance suffers, you should probably not use the automatic login feature.
If you read Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor, and search for Activity Monitor you will find several articles which relate to evaluating your system performance.
According to Troubleshooting Mac OS X by Dr. Smoke, some of the things that you can do to improve system performance are, getting more RAM, turning off the eye candy, make the Dock less entertaining, disabling window effects, using a static desktop background, skipping iTunes visuals, reducing the number of widgets, disabling automatic protection features, and removing unnecessary fonts.

TimHi Tim,
Thanks for the hint. i ran a changeip command (changeip 172.16.1.250 172.16.1.250), it successfully changed it for ichat and a couple of other services, should of got the screenshot of it but i didn't
it's still coming up with this when i restart the service
at this stage i have push notification stopped
It looks like it starts fine, but the issue re-appears when i try to connect clients to it.
I am logging in with [email protected] with the correct password, i have also tried longname@[email protected]
I have also turned ipv6 off as we don't use it here, it was set to auto on the server.

ICal refusing to open (com.apple.ical.plist file missing)
I have tried opening iCal and it refuses to open. The icon bounces on the dock, then asks if I want to report the issue to Apple. I have reported multiple times but I don't know how reporting it will help my iCal work again. (See below the dashed line for the error report.)
Since then, I have tried to replace iCal, but the software claims it cannot be installed on this machine.
I have tried to update my current iCal, but no updates are available.
I have browsed the forums and saw that some solutions were if HelveticaNeue was missing from my fonts. Got it.
And then I saw some threads about refreshing the com.apple.ical.plist... That's a problem. I don't have that file in my library at all. I can't seem to find any way to get it either. What can I do?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

com.apple.ical.plist... That's a problem. I don't have that file in my library at all. I can't seem to find any way to get it either.
It is created by iCal when it runs.

I changed the check mark from HTTP: to HTTPS: in my E1200 setup for administration access [ at least I think this is what caused it; I didn't change anything else] and now my subsequent attempts to login into the router get a "website unavailable" the error message says "....connection refused".
Router, network, internet seem to be working fine.
How can I get back access to the router software?
Thanks,

I am trying to get into my ical application from my mac book and it keeps saying "Authentication of account "[email protected]" failed. Please check your login and password information." Can't do anything within ical while this is happening. How do I get it to stop??
Additional question, my ical duplicates events when transfered to my iphone, how do I get that to stop?Ok, this is strange. I shut down the macbook, and let it sit for a day. Now, after starting up iCal works fine. I did nothing to it at all, yet now it works. Amazing.

ICal rejecting login information
Hello!
We are running many Macs and a Mac server (all Snow Leopard).
We've all been able to add each others' iCal caldav accounts to our machines' iCals and have them all sync beautifully togather...except for one.
I cannot figure out why this one particular laptop will not allow the user to add caldav accounts into his iCal, using the same exact login information that everybody has been using without error.
He keeps getting a "the username and password for this account were rejected by the server" message every time we try to finalize adding an account (using preferences within his iCal). We've tried it using more than one caldav account login information, and even though they are all correct, they are all still being rejected by iCal.
Can somebody shed some light on why this may be happening?I know this is long, but here is the caldav error log for 2 minutes (of course, during which time we tried to add an account to a user's ical):

ICal refuses to finish 'restore' ; trying to resolve sync issues.
trying to fix sync issues.
using missing sync.
everything worked perfectly for a ling long time before i thought it'd be cute to go in and put birthdays into addressbook, and select the option in iCal preferences to add those events to my calendar.
EVERYTHING has gone to **** since then.
the missing sync guys recommend i backup and restore addressbook and iCal.
addressbook did fine.
when i select the saved ICal database file (icbu) from my desktop, it will not complete.
what gives?
i'm trying to do this to fix another problem.
its like every step is making a new issue.
i am getting close to the edge guys...
pleaes help.
thanks!
c
(overall problem is that i cannot even get missing sync to overwrite my blackberry 8830 now.
for months, iCal, Addressbook, and Tasks synced perfectly.
all was well until i screwed with this stupid Birthday feature.)
Message was edited by: clyde calso, i've already gone into iSync and cleared sync history....that didnt seem to affect anything.
thanks in advance for any insights at all.

When I enter a new event in iCal, and want to make it an all-day event for several days in a row, iCal will not let me set an end date other than the start date. If I enter start on January 1 and end on January 5, it shows up only as a single January 1 event. I recently upgraded to Lion, and have never had this problem before. Any ideas?
Hi Ron,
Thanks, I'd totally forgotten about that script.

[SOLVED] Succeeded with /usr/lib thingy, but KDE now refuses login
Hi all,
I finally managed to upgrade my system by following the steps as written in the wiki. Then I rebooted.
Now, when I enter user name and password as prompted by the KDE login then always a dialog pops up saying "System is booting up!". Clicking the OK button brings me back to the login. That's it, I'm locked out.
I wanted to look at the output of dmesg, but unfortunately I can't open a conole other then CTRL-ALT-F1 and pressing CTRL-C there is w/o any effect.
Any idea how to get at my system again?
Cheers

Last edited by poseidon (2012-07-20 06:52:52)Strange, seems that rc.local has to be empty now? Had a call to conky in there. After deleting it and rebooting, I could again log into my KDE desktop.
As on my acer no consoles are provieded I had to somehow boot into single user mode. Here is how I did it: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/grub-boot- … user-mode/.

ICal dock icon wont update in Leopard
My iCal dock icon has stopped updating the current date.
I have dragged the icon off the dock and re-dragged a fresh version from the iCal application but this only works for the current day where again it will not update the next day.
I have had Leopard for almost 2 months and this problem has only just started in the last week.Yes, I have the same problem as well. And it started happening after the recent software update. I have also tried the suggested solution - dragging out the icon and restarting, but it still doesn't work.
When I upgraded to Leopard I was happy that everyday the iCal icon updated the date automatically, but I think the Tiger way of launching iCal at login and hiding its window would have to be the solution in Leopard as well -
I can no longer EDIT nor VIEW events created in iCal...
I have a problem with my iCal in that I can longer edit nor view events.
I can create events, but only the first line of the details for a new event. I am not able to edit or add more info in any way after that (date, time, details, etc.)
I can delete the event though.
When I say I cannot edit nor view events, this problem occurs when double-clicking, when right/CMD-clicking, choosing the relevant command from the menu, or when typing the keyboard shortcut of either CMD-i or CMD-e.
Nothing works. Nothing happens. It's as if I have chosen to do nothing at all.
I have an iPhone which I use to sync events between my Mac and my iPhone, but without being able to properly create an event on my Mac with a chosen time and alarm, etc. iCal on my Mac is almost useless. All my events now have to be created on my iPhone - even when I am sitting right in front of my Mac.
The only use my Mac's iCal is to me now is for pop-up reminders after an event from my iPhone has been synced to my Mac.
The problem I am having with iCal is happening with all the calendars I have set up.
I have no online subscriptions, everything's local.
I have my iPhone set to auto-sync with my Mac for all data.
I am running the latest versions of iCal, the Mac OS (Leopard), the latest iPhone OS, etc.
I tried deleting all my iCal preferences from the ~username/Library/Preferences, but that didn't work.
I tried deleting all my calendars from within iCal in case there was a corrupt calendar, but that didn't work.
I trashed everything I could find that had anything to do with iCal (knowing I could restore from a recent Time-Machine backup), but still nothing worked.
Even when I had an empty iCal to work with, creating a test new-event revealed the same problems of not being able to edit the event after the first line.
I have since restored all my data from the backup I did the other day, so I am back to square one - not that anything I tried before this actually moved me off square one in any way...
Can anyone help me here? It's getting really frustrating having to type all my events out on the iPhone screen, especially when I'm sitting at my computer.Similar problem here. My Ical refuses to edit or delete events. Viewing is possible, though sometimes the whole screen turns grey. Adding new events from mail is still possible. The task-pane completely disappeared. My local apple technic-centre messed about with disk utility for a bit and than told me to reinstall leopard. I could of course do that, but it seems to me that reinstalling Leopard just to fix iCal events is a bit invasive.
I tried also tried removing everything, installing a new copy of iCal from the leopard-cd, software updates, all to no avail.
At the moment I'm open to all suggestions that do not include a complete leopard reinstall. -
I've recently noticed that the date on the iCal icon is wrong. Right now it shows '5', when I launch iCal it changes to '9' (today's date). It's annoying as it do use the date on the icon. I've no idea as to what would be causing the problem or where to start to solve it, so I'm here.
Cheers in advanceI realize this has been discussed endlessly, but I'm throwing in because I'm up too early on a Sunday:
I always thought the previous launch date was a feature, no joke intended. The idea was that the old icon display date showed you, up front and obvious, the last time you checked your agenda. I guess this isn't much use if you're bad at remembering dates but there's a potential clock on the menu bar to learn that.
I wouldn't pipe up without a recommendation though. A simple idea; would launching iCal at login, but hiding it, change the icon date display to your satisfaction? It would be running and I'm sure one could script a launch and quit, but you could right-click iCal in the dock to select Open at Login (or list it with the operator "+" in the following location) then under System Preferences/System/Accounts/My Account/Login Items you could toggle on Hide under "These items will open automatically when you log in."
At least it would update daily if you log out daily. I wonder if the date rolls over if iCal is left running, if you're the kind of account that leaves their computer on 24x7? -
IMacs almost always refuse to shut down
Hi,
I have at home 2 iMacs and a MacBookPro, all running the latest OS.
My 2 imacs have big trouble shutting down. Sometimes they do, but mostly they don't.
Especially the most recent one (ALU) causes problems.
I shut down, nothing really happens and after a while i get the message (for instance) "iCal refuses to shut down", while iCal wasn't even running anymore. I click ok, re-shut down, and after a while he tells me it's iTunes that refuses to shut down. Same thing, iTunes wasn't even running.
This is driving me crazy... my iMac hasn't shut down normally for more than a week now...They're connected to the same router which never shuts down. There was never a problem before with this.
Both of them have a seperate LaCie disk that i use as a backup with time machine.
I don't know what NAS is. There's no central location for iTunes or iCal. The errors can mention other programs as well (excel, ...).
I do have two MobileMe accounts (family and workrelated).
