ICal runs really slowly and unpredictably....

Following the recent 10.4.6 update, my iCal is now running really slowly. I recently shift-clicked about 40 entries to delete, and all I got was the spinning wheel for an hour. I eventually force quit. I never had an issue with the speed of ical before, but now I contantly seem to get the spinning wheel.
Any ideas on how to speed things up? My ical isn't full to the gunwhales, half a dozen calendars that's all. I am also having terrible trouble with .mac syncing across my two computers, (also slow and prone to crashing - and a constant revolving arrow icon in the menu bar).
Anyone else with these troubles?

I followed swissmac99's instructions at
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa;jsessionid=ar2_I-abaAb7UgrAfR?messageID =1931219&#1931219
and it solved the problem for me. I suggest you backup your calendars first. NOTE that they Apple have moved storage location in the later versions from ~/Library/Calendars to ~/Library/Application Support/iCal, so backup both folders to be safe.
Here they are swissmac99's instructions:
-export all local calendars
-delete all local calendars (create and leave an empty one in ical, because it needs at least one)
-delete all subscribed calendars (store the adresses in a file)
-close ical
-delete these files:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.alarmsCache.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.helper.plis
-deactivate .mac synchronisation in preferences
-repair permissions
-restart computer
-open ical
-import previousliy exported calendars
-subscribe to calendars again

Help!!!!! I need to get iphoto lib off of hd which is running really slowly, and clicks rather more loudly than usual, how do i do this, im even on my iphone asking this! Computer also runs inly marginally faster in safe boot mode! Could the apple store help?

It certainly sounds like your harddrive is dying.  I would Immediately backup your harddrive to an external USB or Firewire harddrive Before doing anything else.  It just may save your data in time before you lose it all.
    Hope this helps

  • 10.6.8 running really slowly and failed to start up 4 times

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro (which is about 4 years old) wouldn't start up 4 times, I just got the blue screen with the apple and nothing.  Had to turn off.  Eventually it started and now its running REALLY slowly.
Any thoughts would be most helpful to get it running more quickly!!
I ran Etrecheck and this is what came up:

  • Entourage running really slowly and stalling constantly

I run entourage on a PC network wi=hich runs small business server. I found that it started to run really slowly ie pausing after tuping 10 words and displaying the spinning wheel. So I decided to back up my powerbook, reformat the hard disk and reinstall everything. This seemed to work and I was back up to full speed, but two months later I am back where I started. I can not keep doing this every month. THe machine seems to labour with other programmes too. I thought I may have a virus so I made sure all my virus software was up to date and I have varified disk permissions.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Glad to help. On your PB system disk(gray) are 2 items: 1)Apple Hardware Test (AHT), which is accessed by a restart holding the "option" key; 2)Disk Utility, accessed by a restart holding the "C" key, but if you have an updated OS X disk, like Tiger, use the Disk Utility from the most recent system disk you own. With Disk Utility after restart you will be prompted for an installation, don't panic, choose your language. When that finishes, go to the Utilities prompt in the Menu Bar and you will see a few options, click Disk Utility and then choose your hard drive on the next screen, run "Disk Permissions" and then "Disk Verify" and obviously the repair options. Since you have probably not done this from the disk you will in all likelihood have some repairs. I don't know if Alsoft offers an on-line download of Disk Warrior. I bought the Utility at a Mac Reseller. It's expensive but I swear by it. I run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on my PowerBook and iPod at least once a week, sometimes more often, especially after downloading music or CD's into iTunes for my iPod.All the best!

  • AfterEffects CS3 runs really slowly and renders even slower!

I've had no problem with AE until purchasing CS3. Running it on a G5, seemed to work great for a couple of projects. Now even a very simple project takes hours to work on and goes into some kind of stasis during render.
I've recreated the project in CS7 on a different system and it runs fast and renders in a few minutes, so I'm sure its not the media.
FCP and photoshop run great on the system. I am rendering to the hard drive which seems to have plenty of room.
This project has a Friday morning deadline, so I'm desperate.

I haven't any plug-ins installed. The system I'm running this on is used ONLY for photoshop, AE and FCP. All of the updates are installed religiiously. I ran utilities on my computer recently and all seems well.
I checked my ram and disk cache and it is set at 150%. When I work, the render engine reports I'm using 35% of 1.2 Gb. I had an AE person look at it and she said she can't see what might be causing the problem. With this same system, and AE 7, I created three-d boxes, played with particle world, multitudes of cameras and lights... no problem.
Now, to work at 1/4 res, I wait about 5 minutes for the video screen to refresh every time I touch a camera position keyframe, or a light. Even moving the 7 mb file sideways takes a long time.
I installed AE CS3 from an Adobe sight download, instead of purchasing the discs. I can't find the dmg install file AN"ywheRE on my system. It was an upgrade, so the original AE program is still in there.
I can't go back to the previous version because I won't be able to open the current AE files. At this point, I'm looking at missing my deadline. There must be some explanation for this!

  • Ical runs very slowly

iCal 3.0.7, MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.7 — Recently iCal runs very slowly, like 20 to 30 times slower than it used to. Can get coffee and donut from downstairs before it will change to another month, enter an event, etc. Ran disk repair and permissions repair, but it still runs slowly. Is there a way to reinstall iCal or some other way to get it running as fast as it used to?

    Jon,
Try moving the "Calendar Cache" file to your Desktop. Quit iCal, and find the "Calendar Cache" file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars. Move that file to your Desktop, and log out/in or restart.
If that is unsuccessful, "refresh" the com.apple.iCal.plist file. You will find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Quit iCal, drag the .plist file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior.
Are you syncing any data? If so, what method(s) are you using?
    ;~)

  • The spot removal tool in Lightroom 5 has suddenly started running REALLY slowly, to the point of being unusable.  What should I do?!

My spot removal tool was working absolutely fine and then suddenly started running really slowly.  I now can't adjust easily as there's a lag of about 5 seconds between moving the mouse and the icon moving on screen. I've tried splitting my catalog (which is not actually that big - less than 3000 photos) but that doesn't work.  Help!  I really need to do some photo editing and I'm running really far behind work-wise!

This has nothing to do with catalog size. Splitting the catalog won't help.
This is a common issue with the spot removal tool, if you remove LOTS of spots in a single photo, it will begin to run slowly; the more spots you remove, the slower it will get. If you have a photo which requires huge amounts of spot removal, it would be better to do this in a "desctructive editor" like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

  • My computer is running really slowly, any suggestions it has 182 g avail storage

My computer runs really slowly.  When booted it up it takes FOREVER and when moving around one app to the next or within apps it is slow too.  I had mobileme and upgraded to OSx and icloud. I don't know if those things make it run slowly but I do think it started when I added mobileme.  It could be a coincidence.  I have hardly used my memory at all so it isn't that.  I have 182 gb out of 249 gb free

    Hi, sorry to be so slow in responding I was on a deadline. Anyway I did two things;
I emptied my trash can, went through iphoto emptied that trash can-it has a separate trash can, went through my downloads moved those to trash. Emptied my trash can again. Basically I removed anything that I could.
Than I did a safe boot. I was also having a very slow start up when I launched my computer and it was sometimes in what they call "grey screen" mode. Where the screen is all grey at launch instead of having the apple icon and the spining.
if you go to   http://www.apple.com/support/lion  and click on the icons at left for troubleshooting and installation and recovery there are instructions as to how to do this.  I recall having to put in my serial number or something to get to the right area. There are directions on how to find that too.
It runs faster now, though I have to say not as fast as before I upgraded to Lion.  My pc is still faster- that is sad. I am going to work on it some more. But for now it is at least much better than it was.  Good luck!

  • 10.6.8 now running really slowly

How can my daughter diagnose the problems she is having with her Macbook, running 10.6.8? It has started running very slowly and has been opening pop-up windows, even on 'safe' websites - eg: university websites. Also when opening Google she has started getting pop-ups, even before starting a search.
    JohnC

Firefox is anything BUT slow on Snow Leopard. Chrome is problematic though.
It has started running very slowly and has been opening pop-up windows, even on 'safe' websites - eg: university websites. Also when opening Google she has started getting pop-ups, even before starting a search.
Sounds like her machine is infected with Yontoo malware.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/03/apple-blocks-ad-injecting-mac-trojan-yontoo /
The machine will need to be backed up of only verified user files to a external drive, the entire machine erased and Snow Leopard then updated to 10.6.8, apps and cleaned files returned.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
    For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
If you or her can't perform this function, then seek the services of a local PC/Mac tech, Apple won't do data recovery and may install a later OS X version which will slow down the machine and require all new purchases of software or even brick the machine, which out of AppleCare is a out of pocket expense to fix.
Snow Leoaprd is recieving security updates, in fact a update to 10.6.8 installs a anti-malware that blocks Yontoo malware form installing, but it appears it was already too late in your case.

After the latest update, Firefox is much better. Using it again.

  • Only Hotmail running very slowly and errors in loading correct page

recently Hotmail havs taken a long time to load pages. Plus when a email is selected page flickers and wrong page displayed.
this is not happening with Yahoo mail. Sometimes error message such as "not responding" or "cannot complete". But only when trying to get hotmail

    Hi Larry,
Thankyou for your reply, this is a partial answer
This server has been running for about 3 years now,
The faults started after I did an service pack update for sharepoint. I then did the manual update but the C drive then started to run very slowly and was giving disk size too low errors so I moved the SUS to a different drive but this hasnt helped. It is
still running painfully slow. Ran SBS BPA and found no faults. However ran Exchange BPA and did find faults which I have now fixed. Still have large number of errors
