Ical search won't find events

Just upgraded to a G5-awesome. All calendars seem to have transferred & synced no problem- but today when I tried to search in events & to do's for an event ical came up with with no matches...even when I'm looking at an event with the same title I'm typing in. any suggestions? searches worked fine on my old imac & ibook G3
thanks
Carolyn

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I have hijacked another thread but my problem seemed so similar......
Anyway, changing the seach criteria such as events, titles etc has no effect.
What is strange is that the more info put into the search box the greater the spread of possibles.
For instance 'whidbourne' will give a single match. 'Whidbourne close' will include all those entries with close in the title. 3 whidbourne close will include all those with 3 and so on. These hits are listed by date so the most accurate match '3 Whidbourne Close' is lost in a huge list.
Spotlight works the other way. The more info in the seach box the less the matches as one would expect.
Is this normal? If so Is it just me that finds it strange?
OK, If I remember to omit numbers and common words such as Mr, road, close etc it will be workable ...... but why?
Our emac runs Panther with ical synced via .mac with the G5 imac that behaves (to me) strangely and a search in ical will behave as you expect:
'3'.. gives all the possible matches with 3 in them....by the time 3 Whid is typed in the box there is only one match.

  • ICal Search won't find events in the "distant" future !!!

Here's a bit of a disturbing one: I use iCal (Leopard, so iCal 3.0.8 1287) to keep track of many things- not just a meeting next week or a TO DO - but also for long-term planning. I wanted to enter a reminder for about December 2016 concerning social security - but first wanted to check if I hadn't already done this. I typed social in the iCal search box and everything through 2009 came up.
But, I said, that's a bit strange since I was almost sure I'd put something into iCal already.
OK so then I went to the date 28 August 2017 (shift-cmd-T) and once there, I did the same search - and voila - my event about "social security" from 17 Nov 2016 showed-up in the serach results section!!! (I later tried going to March 2016 and it worked as well - so seems it has to be within a few months / year from the date-- ?!?)
Went back to another date closer to today (28 March 2010) - it did not show up.
For other searches, some events for April 2010 have showed-up; but nothing 3 years in the future.
For some repeating items I get results showing 2008 - 2011, but never further than that if I start the search on today's date. (I get all events from past dates all the time).
Another "workaround" is that if I type the word social into Spotlight, it finds the 17 Nov 2016 event.
Is this a "bug" that iCal cannot find distant future events? Any comments or other people's experience really appreciated. It's not good, this - (like doing a search on an Excel Spreadsheet and only getting recently dated information or something like that. Not good).
    Appreciate any feedback here.

DID NOT WORK - STILL NOTHING FOR 2016 - 2017
I suspect this is a bug or a limitation in the iCal program. After 3-4 hours of a rebuild in Spotlight, I tried searching from today's date for social - same as before - gets the past events; but I had to move to 2017 and re-searc to see my 2016 and 2017 events.
So this is a MAJOR MESS - but or limitation of the program.
Ah, 1993 there was the wonderful DayTimer program - could assign several labels to each event - and a whole lot more. iCal and Address Book are good - but really need something more - and also an integrated "OneNote" type program to easily handle addresses, events, photos, web sites, eM, letters and much more...
But back to this issue - it is NOT solve nor resolved. Bit of a disappointment here.
Any ideas or ??? - let me know!
    Thanks and regards,

"Ditto" Stephen's post. I've experienced the exact same anomaly with respect to iCal searches for distant future events.

Try a new post in the iCal forum. They have more experience with things like this.

  • Search won't find an event two years in the future

Normally I can locate future items in the Calendar app on my iPhone 4S by using the search function from the home screen. Recently, however, I entered a repeating event for August 2015, and the search function will not find it. I tried some other actions to try to narrow down the problem, and this is what I found:
When I search for the name of the event, search does find an e-mail with the same word (an all-caps acronym) in its subject line.
When I take time to go to August 2015 and look for the event, it is still there. It also appears in the iCloud version of my calendar.
Search does find other repeating events and other all-day events.
Search does not find a nonrepeating test event scheduled on 10 August 2015.
Is there some kind of restriction on how far in advance the search function looks at the calendar, and if so, does anyone know how far ahead it looks and why a restriction exists?
Or is there another explanation of something I'm doing wrong? It's really tedious to go two years ahead in the calendar, and it would be even worse if I had forgotten the month of the event I was looking for.

I'm having the same problem with the Calendar App but on my iPad. I entered a medical procedure reminder as an All Day Event in Calendar and neither the Spotlight Search or the Calendar search will find it. I know it is on the desired date in 2016 because I have gone to that date on the Calendar and I see it.

  • ICal search doesn't find anything

when I test this by creating a future event with a particular word in it, then return to today and search for that word in the little "search" box at top right, it doesn't find that word.
    Why not?

I have also had long standing problems of not being able to search for calendar events, either from within iCal or Spotlight or using mdfind.
None of the suggested solutions worked for me (removing Calendar Cache file, adding and removing folders or drives to the privacy section of Spotlight to re-index, or running mdimport ~/Library/Calendars.
One clue was that mdimport -d2 ~/Library/Calendars would not even look at the individual .ics files within any .calendar/Events directory (no output). I suspected that this was due to LaunchServices not associating these files properly with iCal. My system had previously been upgraded all the way from 10.0 through 10.6.
What finally worked for me was the following, using the Terminal, rebuilding completely the LaunchServices database:
    rm /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices*.csstore
    *defaults delete com.apple.LaunchServices*
    *sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister -kill*
*sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister -R -domain local -domain system -domain user*
(note the capital -R in the previous line.)
This step will take a few minutes to complete, with a message about I/O throttleing
reboot (not sure if that is necessary)
    *mdimport -d2 ~/Library/Calendars*
This last command should now show the successful indexing of all calendar events.
After this search finally worked again for me!

    Heiko

  • Searching won't find the actual artist.

Every time I search for certain bands (i.e. The Beatles) it only comes up with cover bands. Itunes say it only had one alnum for the beatles... I'm I doing something wrong or does itunes really only have information for cover bands?

There are no Beatles albums for sale in the iTunes Store. Presumably negotiations between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps. are still ongoing in regard to licensing the Beatles catalogue for sale through iTunes.

  • Why can't I find events by name in iCal after upgrade to Lion?

I just upgraded to Lion on my MacBook Pro and have moved to iCloud. Now iCal (version 5.0.1) no longer allows me to find events by typing the event name in the search bar. This is frustrating. Has anyone else had this problem, or am I overlooking something simple? (I have checked iCal help and read how one is supposed to be able to find events, but nothing seems to work.)

Do you see the folder if you are using the system navigator instead of the application navigator in JDeveloper?
Check your project properties->content and sub nodes to make sure the TopLink directory is included in the project.

  • ICal search bug

After upgrading to Tiger and iCal 2.0.2, events prior to the date of the update are not searchable any longer (although they do appear in the iCal window). Re-typing these events by hand allows the search function in iCal to be find them. Very annoying ...

    Hi Carlos, welcome to Discussions.
This is a topic that has come up before here. Doing a search for 'search' I came across a link to this page iCal: Unable to find events created prior to 10.4.2 update which probably would have saved you some annoyance.
