ICal Server, iPhone, Delegates (or lack there of) & Alerts

I have set up iCal Server, with a company-wide calendar, with all employees added as delegates. When I add an employee's CalDAV account on their 3.0 iPhone, they don't see the company-wide calendar, because iPhone 3.0 doesn't support delegates. But then when I set the company-wide iCal CalDAV on the iPhone, and set an alert, obviously every iPhone in the company receives the alert. Even when I turn off "New Alert Notices" in the iPhone settings, the iPhones still receive the alerts. I would like to avoid every iPhone in the company from receiving every alert, yet be able to view and add events to the company-wide calendar.
Any ideas?

This doesn't answer your question but there is a way to make delegates work on the iPhone. If you are setup as a delegate of someone's calendars you can trick the iPhone into giving you full access to that calendar. For each delegate you need a separate CalDAV account setup in the iPhone which is a pain but doable for small companies.
Setup the CalDAV account with your server and your login information. Put anything you want for the description but I suggest the name of the calendar user you are gaining access to.
When done, go back into the account details and click Advanced Settings. Click the Account URL and change the end of the URL from: "\yourname" to "\Jane" (in my example, use the short name of the person you're accessing)
When you go back into your list of calendars you will see this new category with the calendars listed.

  • Leopard iCal Server, iPhone & MobileMe - best way to set up?

Hi there, hoping someone can help with this scenario:
In our office (approx. 30 people running Leopard), we connect to an iCal Server in order to have a shared CalDAV diary.
Currently, everyone logs in as the same CalDAV account. Within this account there are several separate calendars, one for each job number.
    "332 Blah Blah Road"
    "333 Etc Etc Street"
Our boss (and three others) have just bought new iPhone 3Gs and want to be able to:
    a) have any shared calendar changes pushed to their iPhones when they are away from the office.
    b) be able to make changes to shared calendars on the move and push them back to the iCal Server.
Would we need to get MobileMe (or several accounts) to do this? Apology for the ignorance, I have tried to look for information on this and got nowhere.
Can anyone suggest a way of getting this scenario to work? What are we doing wrong, or would we need an Exchange Server to achieve what we want?
Please feel free to patronise and start from basics!
    Many thanks!

    Hi Nicholas,
In case it's not too late for you, I'd add the following "information bits":
    - MobileMe is great for a single person. Getting multiple MobileMe's to talk to eachother may be possible, but MObileMe is clearly NOT advertised as for the small business.
That said, I still advocate all our team members to have MobileMe, just as a super-simple way to show/share images, for an added layer of backup redundancy, making transformation to newer laptops easier etc. etc.
Whilst some argue it is "too expensive", "can be had for free" etc., I am of the opinion 99 USD/y is a very small price to pay for the simplicity and comfort.
For GROUPWARE appslications (sharing calendars, contacts...), I would strongly recommend to look into KERIO Mail Server instead. It runs perfectly on our XServe, handles Outlook & Blackberry clients as well (there's always gonna be someone clinging on to a Berry-Device or using a PC until they understand how much better the Mac side is ). A 30-day demo is available, very easy to install and just make sure you don't get a conflict with your ports, as Kerio Webmail starts on port 80 (I disabled it, only allowing SSL connections) and your OS X Mailserver might run on it. Also perhaps an idea to deactivate your OS X Mail-Server in case you're using it on an XServe, if at all possible, otherwise make sure there are no port comflicts.
    Hope this helps somewhat.

  • ICal server + iPhone sync

We recently upgraded to a Mac Mini Server running 10.6.7.  I've got the iCal service running on the server and it's working within our office swimmingly.  Every user in the office has an account and we're all delegates of everyone else, so we can keep track of what everyone is up to and invite them to meetings.  All works great.
The trouble comes when we try to sync a users CalDAV account with their iPhones.  You can sync and view the CalDAV account on the phone but you connot modify it.  So if a user is out of the office and wants to add something to their CalDAV work calendar while outside the office, they cannot.
You can add the event to your personal calendar, and when you return to the office you can sync with iTunes and then move the event from your personal calendar to your CalDAV account, but that's a bit of a pain in the rear.
Is anyone else running up against this?  Any solutions?
iPhones are 3Gs running the current iOS.

Ok because this is a server based calendar, only devices with access to the server can create events; you will need to enable the Iphones to be able to talk through the network to the sever for them to create events, otherwise the calendar is essentially a read only file.
Now that i’m thinking about it, can you confirm that set up is similar as follows:
    CalDAV
    Server: cal.example.com
    User Name: example
    Password: ****

  • Should I use iCal server

    Hi.
I'm considering moving to Leopard server from Panther server, for the sole reason of getting iCal server. This is a killer app. for me, what we use at the moment for group calendaring is pretty poor and I am excited about how much better life would be for our small business (10 users) with this.
But I am nervous - iCal server is version 1, and there are not a lot of people using it.
Is it really up to production use right now? How are you all getting on with it?
I'd be interested to hear how people out there are getting on with it, and if it does what it says on the tin.
    TIA

Now we need a contact server to replace Now Contacts...
Check out Address Book Server: http://www.addressbookserver.com/. Since we're going to have to wait for Snow Leopard for a true Apple-made Address Book Server, this product gets the job done right now. The developer is awesome with emails and even gave me a free license to demo the product. I've been testing it for several days now and it's exactly what we were looking for. And given the reputation of OS X server from this forum, Apple's Address Book Server might be fussy, whereas the aforementioned product works today. I highly recommend it.
Sorry to change the subject... I'm trying to get iCal Server set up for my users and felt like you could've used a pointer!

  • Ical Server Snow Leopard email notification: just a clarification question.

    Hi,
I succesfully installed my mac mini snow leo server.
Our scenario: icalserver calendar is used by 4 clients in our network.
ical server is running fine, but there is one thing I
do not understand: the workflow of email notification.
On the server I enabled email notification and set up an email adress [email protected] in Server Admin / Emailnotification.
Then I created a test event in ical. I did not use the local calendar,
    I used the caldav calendar.
Then I was wondering: why did mail start on mini server to send the invitation ?
Email data is still stored in Server Admin / Email notification, so I assume email is sent independently in the backgound from any mail programm !??!
It would be nice if anybody could give me any advice.
    Thanks

Invitations are sent to external email recipients directly by the server posting them to a known mail queue, (probably in your case on the same mini). There is a calendar server manual online which explains, and calendarserver.org where the project is based. I was only able to make it work using the internal account names, not a friendly one I set up for the purpose.

  • ICal, iCal Server, Delegates & iPhones

    Hi there
Having issues with my works iCal server.
Running 10.6 Server w/ iCal server on.
One user is the scheduler, which does the work schedule.
One user is the reader, which everyone logs onto to view the schedule.
In iCal we use delegates to view them and it works great.
Problem is we can not see the delegates on our iPhones. I wish to know how to do this.
    Thx

Check this thread.  Still waiting on a fix.

  • Sync ical server delegates to iphone

I've seen many postings about syncing google delegate calendars in Ical to an Iphone, but my situation is with Snow Leopard Server Ical server.  We have delegate calendars setup on our server and they display properly on the desktop clients in ICal, but I can't sync the delegates to my IPhone.  I tried subscribing to the delegates by using the CalDav URL shown in the "get Info" pane, but always get an "incorrect URL" error.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for that advice.  Curious though - is what I'm asking even possible?  It seems like it should be.  Can iTunes bring over the CalDav info the same way it did with my email accounts when I first got my phone.  It's just strange that iTunes sees the CalDav calendars, but nothing comes over.
I have to set up several iOS devices so not having to do this manually would be ideal, but if I have to...

  • Delegates ical server 2

I recently setup a new iCal Server 2 system using snow leopard server. I created a main calendar for a group of us and added users as delegates. When i use my account to subscribe to the the caldav server on iphone i see my calendars, but there is no option to view the calendars i have access to. Does anyone else know if there is a fix for this?

  • ICal Server - User can log in from iPhone but not from Desktop Mac

I've got quite the peculiar problem with iCal Server on OS X 10.6.6 - my users can log in and access the shared calendars using their iPhones. When I set up an the same account on their desktop Macs in iCal, I get an error message "The server did not recognize your user name or password for account <username@servername>".
I'm positive that username and password are correct. The only thing I found about that in the log files was that the CalDAV server returns a 201 HTTP status code when accessing the account from the iPhone vs. a 407 status code when using iCal on their desktop Mac. The same accounts are used for Email, File Sharing and Address book, all of which run fine.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Maybe even solved it?

Solved it myself - there was a non-ASCII character in the account password. Strange that the iPhone didn't have a problem with that while iCal did. Now that I've changed the password to contain only ASCII characters, the problem is gone.

  • IPhone and iCal Server?

    Hey Folks,
I am terribly sorry if this has already been posted but I just want to air my disappointment.
The small business I work for has spent countless hours and dollars implementing iCal Server on our server and shared calendars on all of our computers.
To this day, there is no confirmation that the new iPhone 2.0 firmware will talk with Leopard Server or even Apple's own iCal Server.
They are promoting the crap out of exchange. Is Apple forcing me to switch back to PC?
    -abartjc

    oh no!
we bought iphones and mobileme-accounts for our whole little company. also mac osx server ... only to find out now that ...
the ical server calendars and also subscribed calendars are definitely not syncing over mobile me. it works with oldschool cabled sync, but the colors of the calendars are wrong then. i really hope this will be fixed with the next update.

  • IPhones - can they connect remotely to iCal server?

Can I take an iPhone and have it access a server based iCal server? If so how?
Also, if users have remote laptops, OS X Leopard, that are never brought into the office, how can they be set up to access and use the iCal server?
    Thanks in advance - Lewis

correct. there's no need to port forward if clients connect via vpn.
you'd configure the remote clients just the same as you would for clients on your LAN, because they'd essentially be on your network over the vpn tunnel anyway. do you mean how would you configure these machines remotely? i'd start by working out a test config, writing up a how-to for your remote users to follow and use screen sharing/ARD if they can't get it to work. test this yourself before rolling out to clients.
that long string in the calendar URL is the user's generated UID in the open directory node. you can use that, which is harder to type, or something like http://calendar.example.com:8008/principals/users/shortname/calendar/
    both should work.
for group calendars, you'd use: http://calendar.example.com:8008/principals/groups/name/calendar/

"One of the benefits of Match, right?  Saving hard drive space."
I would not use iTunes Match as a backup. There are too many bugs and I don't think that's what they intended it to be anyway. The main advantage of using it is to make your music available on OTHER devices, not to replace the music on your original computer.

  • Appointments made on an iPhone not pushed to iCal server

I do not understand it.  It was working well but now all appts made on an iPhone are not getting pushed to an Lion iCal server but if I use a client Mac to make the appointment it gets pushed to the iPhone.  iPhone is able to push appointments to iCloud.  This appears to be a very recent occurrence but it may have occured for a while.  Any solutions or suggestions?

    Back from where?
You choose to not copy them off to a computer as they are designed to be.
If they are no longer showing in iCloud, they are gone.

  • 10.9 server ical server

In 10.6 server to create a shared calendar, ie a calenndar that everyone can see and add to, i had to create a calendar user called ical server, which all the real users became a delegate of, people wanting to share the calendar on their iphones or ipads had to use the calendar users user name and password on their iphone or ipad as you cant add a delegate on a ios device, would i have to have the same setup on 10.9 server? i cant find much on google about it, any help would be nice

    Delegation has changed to Sharing....
Add the shared calendar as an account on your computer, then right-click the calendar (from list in left pane) and choose Share Calendar. From there, you can enter names. Those individuals will be invited to the shared calendar.
