ICal server: "no virtual host"

iCal won't start. When I try to start iCal service I get:
"no virtual host"??

I'm getting similar problems. I HAVE activated DNS, and setup a primary zone with a machine record for the xServe with it's local IP address. And I reset the TCP-IP settings for the server to point to itself for DNS. (I also setup DNS forwarding in the DNS control panel so that general requests are forwarded to our usual service provider DNS servers.)
Use of network utility --> lookup confirms that this entry is correct.
HOWEVER, when I this record as my hostname (server1.myexample.com) I get the following error: "No virtual host found for iCal Service".
Do I need to do anything else in my DNS to make this work? Do I need some form of alias or service record? Am I using the wrong thing as my hostname for the iCal configuration? is that additional information I can provide to help get a diagnosis?

    Trying to set up iCal on OS X Server 10.5.6
    Server is up and running and successfully providing web services on its FQDN. Server is not currently used to support network users / services, but as and when it does it will be the Master Opendirectory server.
    I have created a couple of test accounts on the server (simply in the Users group) and enabled both for Calendar Access.
    I have provided the details of the FQDN on the iCal page, and checked that the default port (8008) has been opened in the firewall.
    In web services there is one virtual domain (using name based virtual server) and the default domain in operation. Both appear to be functioning as would be expected.
    When I click on 'start service' for iCal, I get this error.
    "No virtual host found for iCal service"
    I cannot find any information about this in iCal manual, or online documentation. Can anyone here provide pointer to where this information is, or what it means?

  • One Server, Two Virtual Hosts, Two Applications, Two Mix,...

    In the same server I have two virtual hosts (site1.com, site2.com). For each virtual host I have a PUBLIC page (40, 50).
    The following accesses work perfectly:
    (1) http://www.site1.com/portal/page?_pageid=40,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
    (2) http://www.site2.com/portal/page?_pageid=50,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
    ... But the following ones also
    (1) http://www.site1.com/portal/page?_pageid=50,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
    (2) http://www.site2.com/portal/page?_pageid=40,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
    Imagine that site1 is 'Coca Cola' and site2 'Pepsi' (page 40 is 'Coca Cola' and 50 'Pepsi'!)
    How to avoid it?
    I think about two ways of solving it:
    1. To hide the url and to avoid the manipulation of the number of page. (Died the dog ended the anger)
    2. To do that the page 40 works only with the virtual host site1 and the page 50 with the virtual host site2.
    The question is:
    How to do someone of these options?

    you're right with two different VM you can manage that, but this is similar to have two different server.  My goal is to use only a server (phisical or virtual)...  I think  with 8.8 version we can do it, but I glad if someone has some experience of this scenario..

  • Accessing portal server with virtual host via web dispatcher

    Hi,
    I have portal installed at http://hostname.com:50000. A web dispatcher is installed in front of it which uses port number 80 and redirects to http://hosname.com:50000.
    so when i say http://hostname, my web dispatcher redirects to http://hostname.com:50000/ from where i can access my portal.
    now I want to create an alias for my hostname, say when user types http://mydev, it should redirect to http://hostname.company.com thru webdispatcher.
    so i created virtual host for my portal server . how to use this in my virtual hosts in my webdispatcher.
    I have already gone throug this..

    My requirement is when user types "http://epdev", it should redirect to http://hostname.company.com:50000
    1. To do that, according to what you said, I will create a DNS alias epdev to the IP address where my portal is hosted. so when the user types http://epdev, I have set up a parameter in web dispatcher profile to redirect to http://hostname.company.com:50000/.. so my requirement is fulfilled now..I hope this the correct proc for what I intended to achieve. am I right?
    2. As said above, I am using web dispatcher only for redirection to a fully qualified name, as portal requires as fully qualified domain name. Is there a possibility other than web dispatcher for redirection.
    3. if the above procedure works, I got a question like..what is the use of "virtual hosts".
    How is it different from creating for instance, creating as many DNS aliases to IP address.

    Using Virtual Hosts
    Virtual Hosts let you run multiple independent Web sites on a single host with
    a single Apache setup.
    One of the most important facilities in Apache is its ability to run virtual
    hosts. This is now the essential way to run multiple Web services - each with
    different host names and URLs - that appear to be completely separate sites.
    This is widely used by ISPs, hosting sites and content providers who need to
    manage multiple sites but do not want to buy a new machine for each one.
    Picking an IP address
    There are two types of virtual hosts: IP-based and non-IP-based. The former is
    where each virtual host has its own IP address. You must have a new IP address
    for each virtual host you want to set up, either from your existing allocation
    or by obtaining more from your service provider. When you have extra IP
    addresses, you tell your machine to handle them. On some operating systems, you
    can give a single ethernet interface multiple addresses (typically with an
    fconfig alias command). On other systems, you must have a different
    physical interface for each IP address (typically by buying extra ethernet
    cards).
    IP addresses are a resource that costs money and are increasingly difficult to
    get, so modern browsers can now also use 'non-IP' virtual hosts. This
    lets you use the same IP address for multiple host names. When the server
    receives an incoming Web connection, it does not know the hostname that was used
    in the URL. However, the new HTTP/1.1 specification adds a facility where the
    browser must tell the server the hostname it is using, on the Host: header. If
    an older browser connects to a non-IP virtual host, it does not send the Host:
    header, so the server must respond with a list of possible virtual
    hosts. Apache provides some help for configuring a site for both old and new
    browsers.
    Picking a Hostname and Updating the DNS
    Having selected an IP address, the next stage is to update the DNS so that
    browsers can convert the hostname into the right address. The DNS is the system
    that every machine connected to the internet uses to find the IP address of host
    names. If your hostname is not in the DNS, no one can connect to
    your server (except by the unfriendly IP address).
    If the virtual hostname you are going to use is under your existing domain,
    you can just add the record into your own DNS server. If the virtual hostname
    is in someone else's domain, you must get them to add it to their DNS
    server files. In some cases, you want to use a domain not yet used on the
    internet, in which case you must apply for the domain name from the
    InterNIC and set up the primary and secondary DNS servers for it, before adding
    the entry for your virtual host.
    In any of these cases, the entry you need to add to the DNS is an address record
    (an A record) pointing to the appropriate IP address. For example, say you want
    the domain www.my-dom.com to access your host with IP address 10.1.2.3: you
    must add the following line to the DNS zone file for my-dom.com:
    www A 10.1.2.3
    Now, users can enter http://www.my-dom.com/ as a URL in their browsers and get
    to your Web server. However, it will return the same information as if the
    machine's original hostname had been used. So, the final stage is to tell Apache
    how to respond differently to the different addresses.
    How Apache Handles Virtual Hosts
    Configuring Apache for virtual hosts is a two-stage process. First, it needs
    to be told which IP addresses (and ports) to listen to for incoming Web
    connections. By default, Apache listens to port 80 on all IP addresses of the
    local machine, and this is often sufficient. If you have a more complex
    requirement, such as listening on various port numbers, or only to specific IP
    addresses, then the BindAddress or Listen directives can be used.
    Second, having accepted an incoming Web connection, the server must be
    configured to handle the request differently, depending on what virtual host it
    was addressed to. This usually involves configuring Apache to use a different
    DocumentRoot.
    Telling Apache Which Addresses to Listen To
    If you are happy for Apache to listen to all local IP addresses on the port
    specified by the Port directive, you can skip this section. However, there are
    some cases where you want to use the directives explained here:
    - If you have many IP addresses on the machine but only want to run a Web
    server on some of them
    - If one or more of your virtual hosts is on a different port
    - If you want to run multiple copies of the Apache server serving different virtual
    hosts
    There are two ways of telling Apache what addresses and ports to listen to:
    - Use the BindAddress directive to specify a single address or port
    - Use the Listen directive to any number of specific addresses or ports
    For example, if you run your main server on IP address 10.1.2.3 port 80, and a
    virtual host on IP 10.1.2.4 port 8000, you would use:
    Listen 10.1.2.3:80
    Listen 10.1.2.4:8000
    Listen and BindAddress are documented on the Apache site.
    Configuring the Virtual Hosts
    Having gotten Apache to listen to the appropriate IP addresses and ports, the
    final stage is to configure the server to behave differently for requests on
    each of the different addresses. This is done using <VirtualHost> sections in
    the configuration files, normally in httpd.conf.
    A typical (but minimal) virtual host configuration looks like this:
    <VirtualHost 10.1.2.3>
    DocumentRoot /www/vhost1
    ServerName www.my-dom.com
    </VirtualHost>
    This should be placed in the httpd.conf file. You replace the text
    10.1.2.3 with one of your virtual host IP addresses. If you want to specify a
    port as well, follow the IP address with a colon and the port number
    (example: 10.1.2.4:8000). If omitted, the port defaults to 80.
    If no <VirtualHost> sections are given in the configuration files, Apache
    treats requests from the different addresses and ports identically. In terms of
    setting up virtual hosts, we call the default behavior the main server
    configuration. Unless overridden by <VirtualHost> sections, the main server
    behaviour is inherited by all the virtual hosts. When configuring virtual
    hosts, you must decide what changes to make in each of the virtual
    host configurations.
    Any directives inside a <VirtualHost> section apply to just that virtual host.
    The directives either override the configuration give in the main server, or
    supplement it, depending on the directive. For example, the DocumentRoot
    directive in a <VirtualHost> section overrides the main server's DocumentRoot,
    while AddType supplements the main server's mime types.
    Now, when a request arrives, Apache uses the IP address and port it arrived on
    to find a matching virtual host configuration. If no virtual host matches the
    address and port, it is handled by the main server configuration. If it does
    match a virtual host address, Apache uses the configuration of that virtual
    server to handle the request.
    For the example above, the server configuration used is the same as the
    main server, except that the DocumentRoot is /www/vhost1, and the
    ServerName is www.my-dom.com. Directives commonly set in <VirtualHost>
    sections are DocumentRoot, ServerName, ErrorLog and TransferLog. Directives
    that deal with handling requests and resources are valid inside <VirtualHost>
    sections. However, some directives are not valid inside <VirtualHost> sections,
    including BindAddress, StartSevers, Listen, Group and User.
    You can have as many <VirtualHost> sections as you want. You can
    leave one or more of your virtual hosts being handled by the main server, or
    have a <VirtualHost> for every available address and port, and leave the main
    server with no requests to handle.
    VirtualHost sections for non-IP Virtual Hosts
    Non-IP virtual hosts are configured in a very similar way. The IP address that
    the requests arrive on is given in the <VirtualHost> directive, and the
    host name is put in the ServerName directive. The difference is that there
    (usually) is more than one <VirtualHost> section handling the same IP address.
    For Apache to know whether a request arriving on a particular IP
    address is supposed to be a name-based requests, the NameVirtualHost directive
    addresses for name-based requests. A virtual host can handle more than one
    non-IP hostname by using the ServerAlias directive, in addition to the
    ServerName.

  • Virtual hosts and mod_oc4j.  Can someone from Oracle please answer, at least reply.

    Can someone please explain how to configure mod_oc4j and virtual hosts. It can be done with mod_jk, but I am have major problems in getting it to work with mod_oc4j.

    I am not sure about mod_jk so I won't touch that.
    mod_oc4j introduces directives that have the scope of either default server or virtual host - just like most OHS (Apache) directives. By default, these directives are in a file mod_oc4j.conf, and this file is included at the highest level.
    If you do want those mount points defined in mod_oc4j.conf to be available only to a certain virtual host etc., you can either create a mod_oc4j_vh1.conf file and have it included within the scope of the vh1 virtual host. Or, you can just define those directives right within the vh1 virtual host directive.

    Therefore, all of the served virtual hosts/domain has the same webapp
    directory structure ( e.g.: index.jsp, advert.jsp, css/ )
    For the above to work, we are thinking of getting the requested virtual
    hostname ( supposedly part of the HTTP header sent by the browser as the
    "Host:" parameter ) to figure out how the page will be displayed ... Does
    the Apache plug-in send this information to WLS?

    Apache plugin will forward the "Host" header to wls.
    BTW, HTTP1.0 client will not send the HOST header if I recalled properly since
    HOST header is not part of HTTP1.0 spec.

  • Need Help with Virtual Host

    a quick Explaination of what I'm trying to do.
    We have a DNS name, "our_intranet.com". This DNS points to a load balancer which routes the call to "our_weblogic_server:7015". When a request with this DNS comes in, we really want to go to our_weblogic_server:7015/portal/site/our_intranet. Can this be acheived using a Virtual Host? And if so, could give an example of creating a virtual host?

    I do appreciate you taking a moment to respond and include some suggestions. At this point I feel 90% certain that the answer lies within WebLogic configuration somewhere.
    Discoverer is a J2EE application as I understand it and based on that belief it is probably using the standard J2EE servlet API calls such as ServletRequest. getScheme() (the protocol portion of the URL such as http, https, ftp), ServletRequest.getHostname(), and ServletRequest.getPort(). Those API calls return values derived by the server either from the connection itself or from server configuration.
    The URL's being returned by the web application are not static either. Although the protocol and the port never change (always http://...:80/) the server hostname does. If I add an entry to my host file for fred.somewhere.com and then hit the server using that server name then the URL's returned by the web application are http://fred.somewhere.com:80/, and if I use barney.somewhere.com I get a similar result. Now, the web application could be reading the "Host" HTTP header out of the request itself to derive that information but why go through all that trouble when the Servlet API gives you a standard way to do it.
    For this reason I believe Discoverer (the web app causing our grief) is getting this information from WebLogic even though I cannot verify that with absolute certainty. I wish someone from the Disco area could verify that. I have had a support request open with Oracle for over a week but so far they haven't been able to tell me where they get that information from (which I'm sure is just because I'm not speaking with a developer). I may actually in fact pass on this question to the Discoverer forums you suggested. If someone can at least tell me if Discoverer is getting this information from the application server then I can at least pass that along as confirmation to WebLogic folks.
    I have set up an Apache web server as a reverse proxy server for http and https in front of this particular server as an experiment and get similar results with the server name. Whether I hit Apache via http or https I always get back http://servername:80/ from the back-end WLS. The fact is WebLogic isn't even running on port 80 which makes it even more interesting why the URL's we get back should point at 80 instead of the port WLS is listenning on. Since there is no port or protocol information contained within the HTTP request sent by client browsers (only the Host header which just has the hostname) that may have something to do with why the server doesn't know how to provide correct values, but that doesn't explain why it would choose to tell the web application port 80 instead of the port it is actually listening on.
    As far as tracking down how to configure this beast it might be complicated by the fact that I don't think this is just WebLogic Server. This is Fusion Middleware. I didn't think that included Apache HTTP Server, but actually I can see there is a directory for Apache on the server identified as ohs (stands for Oracle HTTP Server). Some of the help in Enterprise Manager (or maybe it was in the WebLogic administration web console) actually talks about Oracle HTTP Server which they say is based on Apache HTTP Server and in fact the configuration files are consistent with Apache. That doesn't mean I don't believe WebLogic folks like yourself that say Apache is not a part of WebLogic server (which seems like a pure Java application) but maybe it is a part of Oracle Fusion Middleware. They might just have it there for other stuff working together with WLS (such as Oracle Web Cache) or for load balancing as you mentioned. If it is there then it might either complicate things, or might provide a possible solution. If it really is running there in front of WLS and we can use some Apache configuration values to override URL information that the server passes on to the web applications maybe it could help. I did see some processes running on the same server with a name something like HTTPD.worker. My Apps DBA's (who are also learning as they go with WLS) said they did zero Apache configuration as part of the install however and I know zero about how (or if) Apache is working together with WLS.
    I tried going down the path of setting up a custom Network Channel and Virtual Host because a) it seemed like a logical place to look and b) I had seen some references to them on the web but as I tried to step through the configuration I admit I never saw any settings that related to protocol overrides. I have seen host and port overrides somewhere along the way but never a protocol override.
    I'm confused that this seems so complicated. I mean, aren't there a lot of people out there running their servers behind a hardware load balancer with SSL termination at the load balancer (it handles the https decryption and then forwards the requests unencrypted to the back-end servers)?
    Your link to the "Corecoreserverserverprotocolshttptitle.html" looks like just the right place (almost). If it only had Frontend Port and Frontend Protocol as well as Frontend Host (and instead of Frontend HTTP Port and Frontend HTTPS Port). So frustrating to be so close but miss. I do appreciate the pointer though.
    Funny that you should bring up the post on WebLogic Wonders because that is actually the example I tried to follow when I attempted to set up a network channel and virtual host. I aborted before the deploy because the deploy wasn't working quite how I expected and I had little confidence it was going to help me at that point (because I hadn't been presented with any setting that allowed me to override the protocol (http/https) value for a front-end system. I'm still not quite sure how the Network Channel works together with the server/domain/virtual host so perhaps I need to do a little more reading.
    If anyone understands exactly what I am trying to achieve though and can give me some direction it would be much appreciated. It seems straight forward to me:
    We have an F5 hardware load-balancer that runs here:
    https://external-servername:443/....
    It uses hardware SSL accelleration to decrypt the incoming request and if it sees /discoverer/ in the URL it then forwards the request unencrypted to a back-end WLS here:
    http://internal-servername:8888/...
    We would be happy if any connection that server recieved it always overrides the scheme (https instead of http), server (external instead of internal...it actually does this properly already), and port (443 instead of 80). In a perfect world it might behave differently if we connect internally directly to the server (in other words if we don't access it through the load balancer then it provides URL information to continue accessing it directly) but that is just icing on the cake which probably would require virtual host configuration to differentiate the two. We'd be ecstatic if we could simply override those values all the time for the entire server to some constant values that we set.

    I just installed FMS2 and placed in a dummy sharedBall
    application. I can connect to the app once, but every single
    connection after that one fails and I see this in the edge.00.log
    file:

Or are you saying you are also finding connection rejects with RTMP as well ?
    I would like to know if the original problem of connection rejects are still happening with VHost being unavailable ?

  • No virtual host found for iCal service

    Hi all,
    I recently created a link aggregation for our xserve, in doing this i needed to demote my open directory to standalone and then promote it back to master (archive and install users).
    In doing this it appears that iCal has spat the dummy, in that our users could not connect. I turned iCal off and on in the hope that this correct it, however when trying to turn back on I get the error "No virtual host found for iCal service..."
    Check host name reveals that names match.
    Any ideas guys, I'm happy to fully restart iCal (events are backed up), however I can't even get it started yet!

  • "No Virtual Host Found for iCal Service" help?

    I have Leopard Server installed.
    When I try to "Start iCal" in Server Admin, "No Virtual Host Found for iCal Service" pops up.
    Also, I can't configure the server in the Directory Utility. Utility claims the ip address is incorrect, even though I know it is.
    HELP!!!

    I just solved this problem by creating a Kerberos record for the iCal server in my Open Directory server's Kerberos realm. The iCal server can join your Open Directory's Kerberos realm through its Open Directory pane's 'Join Kerberos' button. (I think this could be presented better.)
    If you're not using Kerberos, then you'd probably solve the problem by selecting 'Digest' as the 'Authentication' method.

  • Apache virtual host with OSX Server?

    I have been running OSX Server for a while now, and just recently I decided to get McMyAdmin for my Minecraft server. The web client for McMyAdmin runs on port 8080, but I wanted it on port 80. I wanted to use it with my domain, so I just created a sub domain and pointed it to my server. The problem is that OSX Server apparently doesn't let me use port 80, even when websites are turned off. I decided to delete Server and just use plain apache. This worked until I realized that my website was only accessible locally. I have all the correct ports forwarded, etc. But I get the error:
    Response Error.
    Technical description:
    502 Bad Gateway - Response Error, a bad response was received from another proxy server or the destination origin server.
    when I try to connect from outside my network. This is probably just some simple thing I missed but it would be nice if someone could just point out what I did wrong here. Back to the point, I want to know how to run the proxy to my web client on port 8080 AND ALSO run OSX Server with or without apache virtualhost.

    Web is stupidly easy - Apache has extensive support for multiple virtual hosts in a single server and will happily support as many domains/hostnames as you can throw at it.
    Mail is a little trickier since it needs to hook into some kind of directory server to validate user addresses.
    Mac OS X's Open Directory does support this, but it's a little cumbersome (basically every user has to exist in the main Open Directory domain as well as having a secondary email address(es) in the other domain(s).
    This can get especially tricky when you have users with the same shortname in different domains - for example if you give [email protected] a secondary email address of [email protected] and you then get a new user [email protected], you can't give the third 'joe' the address 'joe' in Open Directory since that's already taken. This means he'll have to login using different credentials from his email address. Confused yet? You bet.
    If you're prepared to eschew Open Directory you can just use Postfix's built-in support for virtual hosting, but it's a little more complex to setup and support and is entirely command-line based (i.e. there's no GUI for setting it up or supporting it).
    So, for that reason you might be prepared to setup multiple virtual machines for each domain. It really depends on how much the domains are related (if at all).

  • Error adding Win Server Technical Preview host to Virtual Machine Manager Technical Preview

    I've built Win Server Preview (latest build 9888).Also build System Center Technical Preview, on another server (VM), and now trying to add Server Tech Preview hosts to VMM.
    However VMMService is crashing, with error below.
    Note I have tried multiple scenarios, including upgrade hosts from 2012 R2, install fresh as server Core, install fresh full-GUI hosts, enable Hyper-V before adding to VMM, allow VMM to enable Hyper-V...
    also RunAs user is administrator of hosts and VMM, computer accounts have been added to all administrator groups, WinRM quickconfig has been run, firewall is off..
    ..however VMM vNext refuses to add Server vNext hosts. (however - I can add Server 2012 R2 hosts to VMM vNext with no problem)
    NOTE - also, when Server Manager starts, I get "Error occurred while loading the plug-in for 481. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation". After this the File and Storage Services node in Server Manager is missing. Not sure if
    this is related to the error below; but I get this issue in all servers built with latest .9888 build.

    In the /etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf file check this line exists:
    NameVirtualHost *:80
    This solve same issue for me.
