ICal + SunBird

Hi since iCal (2.x used in Tiger) doesn't have CalDav support, im forced to use SunBird from Mozzila for all my Tiger and XP Machines (Leopard Machines work fine). I have 4 groups created, all have their own calendars. I've managed to get SunBird working with Caldav (meaning that I can see events, and move events around), but at the moment I input a new event, CalDav doesn't take it. Nor does it show an error in Sunbird, it just accepts the event (but doesn't show it) neither does it show on the Leopard iCal (3.x). [Oh and i Can create events and change it on Leopard without any problem]
So Its really useless for all my non Leopard employees. What can I do?? -Except change them all to Leopard?!?-

Thought I'd pass on some helpful hints to those having trouble with basic setup of Sunbird.
First, you need to know what calendars to add to Sunbird. In iCal, doing a get-info on the calendar will get you started but not the whole way. It may show /calendars/_uids_/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/calendar/ or may show /calendars/_uids_/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/27C9FC5A-AF32-43A
When you enter the full calendar path into Sunbird you want to use the full path
http://<servername>:<calendarport>/calendars/users/<username>/<calendar name>
OR
http://<servername>:<calendarport>/calendars/_uids_/<guid>/<calendar name>
calendar port is 8008 by default.
either one will work. The trick is to make sure you know the full calendar name. The FIRST/default calendar setup for each user is called 'calendar', each successive one is given a unique ID. ICAL MAY NOT SHOW YOU THE FULL NAME!!!! In the above example, ical gave me 27C9FC5A-AF32-43A but what I really needed was 27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D4074 .
Therefore in my case what I need to enter in Sunbird would be
(initial calendar)
http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/users/joe/calendar
or
http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/_uids_/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/calendar/
(additional calendar)
http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/users/joe/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D407 4/
or
http://myserver.com:8008/calendars/_uids_/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2DEA7832034F/27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D4074/
You can use the ical get-info for a reference and then find the full name by browsing your server http://myserver.com:8008, or mounting the volume under go->connect to server http://myserver.com:8008 In the /calendars/users/username section you'll see 'calendar' and any other calendar for that user such as 27AA8776-D9DF-4AE1-A2D0-2BAA608D4074 in my case. Selecting that calendar shows the entire url in the link toolbar.
Setup your calendars in iCal and get their reference number, name them here for other mac users to see (if shared). Setup your deligates in ical etc. THEN use the above to get it setup in Sunbird. Hope this helps.

  • Correct Urls for iCal / Sunbird / Lightning

    Hi,
Was struggling with this through a few threads etc., and happened upon the answer from playing around with the URLS on my own server.
This works for HTTPS:// (I presume for normal HTTP traffic, change to HTTP:// instead, and change port to 8008)
    Users:
    Sunbird - https://my.server.com:8443/calendars/users/<<username>>/calendar
    iCal - https://my.server.com:8443/principals/users/<<username>>
    Groups:
    Sunbird - https://my.server.com:8443/calendars/groups/<<group>>/calendar/
    iCal - https://my.server.com:8443/principals/groups/<<group>>/
I haven't tested it without a secure connection (i.e. #8008) so perhaps someone could confirm.
What's EXTREMELY annoying, is this BASIC info should by readily available at Apples Support site, in the documents accompanying the server etc. I shouldn't have to go rooting around forums to find this sort of info out.
Next MAJOR gripe: You would think with a bank balance slightly higher than mine (circa $18 billion) that Apple might have contributed to the Outlook plugin - or (shock) actually released one themselves for us to use.
Come on Apple, ... Kerio's latest release is 4 years ahead of you on the Mac platform!!!!

There is some information on the open source wiki site that may be of help:

  • Hardware for an iCal Server?

Ok this might turn into a bragging contest but mostly I'm looking into an idea of what sort of computing power we need to run our iCal server.
    Currently it's this:
Mac Mini 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo
    2GB RAM
    OS X 10.5.4 Server w 10 clients
I have 52 users (iCal/Sunbird) currently (but only 6 connect at the moment) and want enough oomph to expand to as many as 75 users.
Right now the CPU gets pinned with Python taking up around 90% of the processing time at around 6 users. Initially the problem was that everyone (well, about 10 Mac users) attempted to sign on at once and the iCal clients all timed out since the server couldn't respond within 120 seconds. So we scaled back and overnight the 3 users who left their computers on and the 3 more whom I added one by one were able to get their Calendars synced. Going to 8 or more users however and clients start timing out again on a regular basis.
While I'm looking into an upgrade for the Mini to either a 2.0GHz, 2.16GHz, or 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo CPU (which I'll have to use a tool to manually set the fans to cool it off), I'm thinking this will likely still not be enough processing power.
An XServe (2x2.8GHz Quad Core w 2GB RAM and Unlimited Client Server - $3100) seems like overkill (I've been told I can purchase something new if necessary) and we do have a spare PowerPC G5 Dual 1.8GHz Mac which could also work. I'd prefer to not purchase an iMac (which was suggested) or a Mac Pro (slightly cheaper) if at all avoidable.

I would suggest troubleshooting the CPU getting pinned as a support issue. We run a Core Duo (solo) 2GhZ iMac in a similar environment with no problems. Are you authenticating locally, or connecting to another directory?

  • Invisible iCal

Hello, so I did some comparing of different calendar applications: iCal, Sunbird, etc. I made a folder inside the applications folder in which I stored iCal, among other things for organization. I did nothing else to iCal.
So I decided to use iCal, and put in the dock. when I quit iCal the iCal icon lost the "calendar" backdrop and only retained the "MAY 31" text which usually sits inside the calendar icon. When I click the icon, the backdrop returns to normal until I quit, when it again vanishes.
It looks rather mysterious, and is fully functional, but I don't like that its doing this.
What should I do? I've tried removing and re-adding the icon. Should I reinstall iCal?

    argos12,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I made a folder inside the applications folder in which I stored iCal, among other things for organization.
Generally speaking it is not advisable to reorganize Apple supplied applications. System updates will not find the application when an update is applied.
    What should I do?
Try a Safe Boot, and after the Safe Boot restart as specified. If that is unsuccessful, find the com.apple.dock.plist in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences folder, drag it to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for normal appearance. Be aware that the Dock will return to default appearance after removing the Dock .plist file.
    Should I reinstall iCal?
    No

  • Adding attendees?

    Hi,
so this whole iCal server seems to be lacking a lot of clear documentation...
I'm trying to add an attendee to an existing event and have so far not had any luck. I can create the event fine, and view the event on either a Mac running iCal/Sunbird or a PC running Sunbird, but when I try to add an attendee I keep on getting an exclamation mark symbol next to the name.
The iCal server is running under the Workgroup configuration and is bound to a 10.4.10 OD server.
The iCal client Help pages say that the attendees names are meant to autocomplete as you type - but this is definitely not happening.
Anyone have any suggestions / pointers.
    thanks in advance.
    paul

I have calendars set up on 4 computers - one on same network as the server and three on the outside. If I add attendees on the one on the same network, the persons appear as autocomplete and works fine, but on the three outside I get no auto complete and the error exclamation marks. I guess it's related to the OD ldap, but I can't figure out how to get access to it from the outside. Any ideas?
All appointments otherwise works fine on both sides.
    Thanks,
    Peter

  • Default timezone from Web calendar (currently UTC)

When I create an event using the Web calendar, it seems to use UTC as the time zone. This causes a problem when I go into iCal and see that the event is several hours off compared to what I set when I created the event. I can edit the event in iCal to use my local timezone (PST), but I'm wondering if there is a way to set the default timezone when creating events using the Web calendar?
    Patrick

As far as I can see from looking at the saved CalDAV data, iCal and Sunbird save timezone info for each calendar entry whereas the WebCalendar saves none.
This is fine if you are working only with the web calendar or you specify no timezone data in your external client (iCal, Sunbird, etc), but is unusable otherwise.
There are four things that need to be addressed here as I see it.
    1) The iCal Server software needs to use the timezone info from the settings on the server machine to set its internal values.
    2) The web calendar software needs to use (1) as a default for all new web calendar accounts.
    3) The web UI needs to have a way to set a timezone value in the "Settings" page of the users and the groups.
    4) The web calendar needs to read and save this timezone data with each entry to/from the CalDAV server.
Until Apple does this the system is unusable except in tightly controlled environments as more diligent users will set their timezone data in other applications such as iCal, Sunbird, or others that are coming out.
Any comments on this from Apple Tech?

  • Default timezone of wiki calendar

I want to change the default timezone of wiki calendar. It is set to "America/Los Angeles" by default. Each user can change it through setting but it is confusing to new people who access it. The calendar is accessible to anybody. I am using Server 2.2.1.

  • How can I test?

I want to find out if Mac OS X Server plus iCal/Sunbird (it's a mixed Mac/Windows environment) will meet the needs of my wife's small business. (They have been using Now Up-to-Date, but that's not going to be an option in the future, since Now Software is out of business.)
What I'm looking for is some way to test this to see how well it works. However, even if there is a way to get a test version of Mac OS X Server, which I kind of doubt there is, I don't have the hardware to run it. I'd probably run it on a headless Mac Mini, but the one they've already got won't run 10.6 and isn't free to be used for testing anyway. Is there some free CalDAV server that I can use for testing? Something that can run in Leopard on an old G4 laptop, but will give me a fair idea of the capabilities of the CalDAV server in Mac OS X Server?
    Thanks in advance!

That there's no scratch USB disk that can be repurposed for testing implies there's insufficient budget available for the purchase, for requisite software and support costs, for archival processing, and for ongoing operations.
No, it implies that this is a small business and they can't afford to spend a bunch of money just to test something that may or may not actually work for their needs. If I can verify that it will meet their needs, they'll be able to come up with the money needed.
I'd (and this is in all seriousness) suggest consideration of [Google Docs|http://docs.google.com], [Google Calendar|http://calendary.google.com], GMail and related services.
That has been suggested to me before, but the problem is that their Windstream internet connection isn't very reliable, and they can't afford to lose access to the calendar. With the current system, they can continue to schedule appointments and whatnot even if the internet connection goes down, as the internal network will continue to function just fine.
Otherwise, yes, reserve some time with and have a chat with the [Apple Business folks|http://www.apple.com/business>
    That's probably the best approach.
    Running a server is a non-trivial effort
I'm aware, this isn't the first Mac server I've managed, though it would be the first with the actual server software. The standard Mac OS X package running on an inexpensive Mac Mini makes an admirable server for a small business. Note that they are not using the current server for e-mail, web or whatnot... just some local file sharing, calendar sharing (via Now Up-to-Date) and a couple FileMaker Pro databases.

  • General client/protocol support questions

I'm sure some of this can be answered in the docs, but in the interest of getting a real-world summary, I was wondering if anyone could comment on if (and if so, how) the following are supported by Calendar Server.
    * iCalendar (if so, what URL does one use to subscribe or publish a calendar with an icalendar client?)
    * WebCAL
    * CalDAV/GroupDAV
My focus is to try and identify what clients will really work with CS. I know that the web clients work great, that Lightning works pretty well and Evolution sort of works (I have another post about Evo). But I'm curious about non-WBAC clients like Apple iCal, Sunbird, Kmail/Korganizer, or any other free/OSS clients that might work.
    TIA!

Work is currently under-way to provide additional protocol support:

Thunderbird, with Lightning WCAP enabled plugin (http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/calendar/lightning/releases/0.7/lightning-wcap/)
    Evolution with WCAP plugin (http://www.go-evolution.org/Evolution_JESCS).
Outlook with Sun Outlook Connector installed.
    Sunbird -- although I haven't confirmed this myself (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/)
For Apple iCal there is : http://sourceforge.net/projects/jscalendarsync and http://www.hovenweep.org/~rowan/software/icald.html although I can't comment on how well these work (don't use/own a Apple Mac).

  • ICal and CalDAV: Added items in sunbird do not appear in iCal

    Hello,
I hope the question fits the forum and has not yet been answered. Sorry if it is the case. Anyway, here is my problem. I have this CalDAV account that I want to use both on my mac using iCal and at the office using sunbird (computer on linux).
This works perfectly well when I create or delete events in ical, i.e. the changes are reflected in sunbird. However, for some reason I don't understand, when I create, modify or delete an event in sunbird, this is not updated when I launch iCal. It seems that iCal does not update itself.
Has anyone ever experienced this ? Any help on this would be great. Thanks a lot.

    Hi
I indeed checked and I've set it to update every 1 minutes. I even update it by hand and the new events added in sunbird do not show up. So I don't know, may be the events added under sunbird are not exactly in the same format as the ones added by iCal and that would be why iCal don't add them...
If anyone has any idea of why it's not appearing I am interested. Thanks for the help

  • Subscribe to iCal's from Sunbird?

Hi. I'ver seen several posts from folks suggesting using Sunbird to view iCals.
I have several published iCals, but I cannot view them in Sunbird. I have tried both WebDAV and CalDAV options. In eith case, no calendar events show up.
    Ideas?

    Chuck
Like you, I had no luck with Sunbird. An alternative which did work for me was the Mozilla Calendar extension for Firefox.
I have it up now on my work PC and I've subscribed to my combined iCals published from home.
You can get it from here.

  • Delegate sunbird from ical server

Hello, it is possible to be delegated from ical, an account in mozilla sunbird? if it is as well as?

I also get the "Error from server: Error processing calendar data (210)" error every time the page loads or I try to add an event. Looking at the iCal error log, I have the following errors:
    2008-06-18 11:45:09-0500 [twistedcaldav.logging.AMPLoggingFactory] AMPLoggingProtocol connection established (HOST:UNIXSocket('/var/run/caldavd.sock') PEER:UNIXSocket(''))

  • ICal is kidnapped by "Mozilla Sunbird"!

My iCal program SUDDENLY has dates, events, and reminders that I never put there! The sidebar-information panel has "Mozilla Sunbird and Lightning Calendar Project" junk in it. I can't get rid of any of these mysterious entries. This occurred after I visited the Mozilla website. I don't remember clicking on anything or ordering anything new!
How can I get my OLD iCal back?!!
    Maria

    Any ideas?

  • Sunbird/Lightning and iCal delegates/resources

I've posted following message some days ago in Discussions/iCal but did not get any reply until now. Maybe here is the better place for such a question:
Does anybody know, if it is possible to add iCal delegates/resources to sunbird/lightning?
Personal and group calendars are working (more or less) fine by adding the appropriate caldav link (http://server.com:8008/calendars/groups/group1/calendar). Is there an equal link for delegates/resources?
We are using a Leopard Server 10.5.6 in a small workgroup with a mixed network (Mac, Windows).
    Best regards,
    tom

I just ran into this my self. I was able to get Sunbird/Lightning to open a delegated calendar by using the delegated users calendar URL. For example:
User foo uses the URL https://server:port/calendar/users/foo/calendar/ for sunbird.
User foo allows access of his calendar to user bar (seems to only be done with iCal).
User bar adds the URL for foo's calendar as https://server:port/calendar/users/foo/calendar/ (same URL that foo used).
You can find the URLs to use for a user's other calendars by pointing your web browser at the user's calendar base URL (https://server:port/calendar/users/foo/) and using the URLs above calendar that are a string of digits (I am guessing you would call the string a calendar ID or something similar).
This worked for me, but your mileage may vary.
