ICal sync with palm

when I synced my Palm Zire to my old iBook G4, it added approximately 224 new events, and modified approximately 46 existing events. whenever I try to sync it with my macbook pro, it warns me that it will update the database to match what's in my older system. Basically, the issue is that iCal got damaged on my old mac, and I want to be able to have iCal look exactly the same as it does on my MacBook Pro. how can I do this?

If you can adapt your requirements to the behavior of iSync, iCal, the Sync Services framework and the Missing Sync for Palm OS, it is possible to achieve what you want, within the limits outlined below:
Calendars and Categories
• iCal events are assigned to a Palm category with the same name as the calendar they are part of. If the category does not exist on the Palm device, the Events conduit creates a category with the calendar name and assigns the event to that category. If that category cannot be added—due to space limitation on your Palm device—the event is added to the Unfiled calendar.
• Palm events and tasks that are in a specific category are sent to that calendar in iCal only if a calendar with the same name as the category exists. If the calendar does not exist, the record will be sent to the calendar that you have chosen in the Mark/Space Events and Mark/Space Tasks conduit configuration sheets. If the identified calendar is read only, then the event or task will be ignored.
• On the first synchronization of a read-only calendar, the items are properly assigned to the correct category on the device. If any edit is made to an item in a read-only calendar the change is ignored but will persist on the device until something forces it to be overwritten by data from the desktop. If an item is assigned to a read-only calendar, it will be switched to the calendar you have selected in your preferences.
• Calendars listed in the conduit settings are pulled from Sync Services. That means that if iCal has not finished synchronizing with Sync Services, the full list of calendars may not be read during that event.
Other outcomes are not possible because of inherent limitations in the Palm OS and its PIM applications, the Sync Services framework, and iCal itself.

  • Chinese Characters Not Displayed Properly when iCal sync with Palm T5

    Hi All,
I am having problem with the Chinese Character display on iCal. I am using iMac Intel Core Duo and Palm T5. I can read on my iMac the Chinese Characters which I typed on the iMac. Also I can read on my Palm those Chinese I inputted on my Palm. But both can't display the Chinese Characters inputed by each other. Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
I assume your flash disk is using FAT16/32...
You need to specify the character set when mounting it. On the command line...
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/mountpoint -o iocharset=utf8
To include this option in the default VFAT mount options under GNOME, launch gconf-editor, look for the key: /system/storage/default_options/vfat and add iocharset=utf8 to the list of mount options.

  • Centro will not sync with Palm desktop - Calendar and/or Contacts

I have used a Palm device for many years. Acquired a new Centro. Upon installation of Palm Desktop (on Windows XP) that came with Centro, all contacts, calendar, to do, memos, etc transferred to the Centro during installation.

I have a Centro/Verizon Wireless using Versamail with accounts established for personal POP and Exchange e-mail synchronization.  The latter account is for work.  Previously I owned a Treo 650p using Versamail.
When I first installed Palm OS Desktop and synched to my Centro device, it was on a Windows XP home computer, and no Versamail accounts were defined.  First I downloaded and installed the Versamail version which allowed Exchange synchronization.  I exported the Treo650p contacts list to a disk file, and imported it onto the Windows XP home computer into the Palm OS Desktop installed with the Centro-supplied CD.  This synched the imported contacts list to the Centro fine.  After I defined all the POP and Exchange accounts, synchronization with the office Exchange contacts list worked fine, and still does.  Synchronization with the windows XP home computer for contacts seems to still be ok, too regardless of the MS Exchange Versamail account commingling with my personal POP accounts.  Maybe the install sequence is overriding the previous posts' notation that MS Exchange mail definition will override synch with Palm OS Desktop?
The problem now is I have a different/second home computer that's Vista os.  I installed the Palm OS Desktop and synch with the Treo.  The contacts list is not synching to this second home computer, maybe because I didn't follow the exact same sequence as for the Windows XP pc?  I can still synch my Centro with my Windows XP pc and that includes contacts.
Is there a way on this second pc to override the MS Exchange contacts override for synchronization without having to go through the exact same install sequence as occurred on the Windows XP machine?

  • List of email clients/address books that will sync with palm desktop 6.2

Is there (and if not, I think there should be) a list somewhere of email clients whose address books will sync with a palm Treo (palm Desktop version 6.2)? I have been happily using various palm handhelds for about 6 years now and have been syncing the address book with Mozilla and now Thunderbird  for the last couple years. I currently have an m130, but it's time to upgrade to a "smart phone" as I'm tiering of carrying around two devices. Unfortunately, the Treo requires palm Desktop version 6.2 which is not compatible with the Thunderbird palm sync. I have had the idea that Outlook (which I've never used or been exposed to) will sync with palm, but something I read gave me the impression that I would need to buy some third party software to make that happen, plus the $110 they want for Outlook. I would like to think there are other choices for someone who just wants to sync their smart phone with their email client's address book. It seems that such syncing ability would be esential to palm's sales and that a listing of all such syncing possibilities would be extremely beneficial to sales, particularly for new sales to people aren't already insiders on this sort of topic. The lack of ability to sync with Thunderbird may just cause me to stick with my old m130 awhile longer and give up on the idea of a nice new smart phone.

Wow, thanks a bunch! You just saved me from a long, involved, and discouraging search for an alternative. I'm using WindowsXP, palm m130, palm desktop 4.1, Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 and Thunderbird's palm sync conduit palmsync-2.0.0.x-wsm .  I'm wanting to purchase a Treo 700 on ebay, but went to the palm site, clicked on the support link, then the Treo 700, then the downloads tab and it directed me to desktop 6.2, which made me believe I would have to use that to sync a treo 700.
I do wish that both palm and Thunderbird would talk more about the palm Thunderbird palm sync. Unless you're a real geek or very determined (I'm the later), you're not likely to find out that such capability exists. I can't believe I'm the only one out there who needs to have my email client address book contacts with me all the time, so there has to be others who are looking for this.
Next stop, ebay - I have a smart phone to buy.

  • Centro will not Sync with Palm Desktop

I have removed all Palm references from laptop as suggested in: Community Help Forums : Hardware & Software : Software : Re: Syncs fine -- missing all data in Desktop App with no luck.
I have a Windows Vista, downloaded Hotsync Manager 7.0.2 and all data (contacts/calendar) from Palm Centro will not appear in Palm Desktop.  I have made sure that:
    1. user name in Hotsync is the same as is in Palm Desktop
    2. tried different user name (suggested "Test" ) with no luck
    3. changed name of device through "prefs" icon (at least, in Bluetooth, Device Name is "Palm Centro") I am unable to find another option to change the name of the device for syncing purposes if it is not through Bluetooth
Any other suggestions?  I have made entries into te Palm Desktop calendar, do a Hotsync and the entries from the Palm Desktop entries are not appearing into the Palm Centro, and the Centro's contacts and calendar entries are not showing up in the Palm Desktop.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreaciated!

Do you have the Centro set to sync with Microsoft Outlook by mistake?  Look in Outlook and see if your info is there.
If it is, you can run a simple program in your Start/All programs/Palm/PIM Conduit Sync/Sync with Palm Desktop to switch it back.

    (Thanks smkranz)
Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
If you are using the Palm Desktop from your original installation disc on your Vista desktop, it is not compatible and the Install Tool won't work.  This is covered extensively here on the forums and in the Palm Support pages.  You will need to use the new Palm Desktop 6.2.2 by Access, which can be downloaded from the Support & Downloads link above...you might have to lie and tell it you have a different device, because PD 6.2 is technically not compatible with older Palm devices.  Then, after you install PD 6.2, go to www.pimlicosoftware.com and download/install the free PalmHotsyncSetup utility, which should add compatiblity for your device.
Note, this will probably only work if your desktop is 32-bit Vista.  If your Vista desktop is 64-bit, your only hope of syncing is Infrared beaming because there are no 64-bit drivers.  You'd also need to use an infrared (IRDA) adapter on your computer.
You also have a non-sync option of installing applications to your Zire, by first copying the .prc file to a Secure Digital card using a card reader on your computer, then putting the SD card into your Zire and using the Copy command to Copy the file from the SD card to the Zire's memory.  The file should be put in the /palm/launcher folder on the card first, then you can copy it to internal memory.
Then i set it for Newer Palm PIM devices. Thanks!

  • Published iCal will not sync with Palm device

I had been synching my iCal to my Palm device. I recently published my iCal calendar and To Do list on .Mac. Now I can no longer make changes to my calendar on iCal, nor can I see any To Do's. When I tried to sync my Palm device, all calendar and To Do items were deleated from the Palm. Can anyone help? I have now spent several hours trying to recreate my calendar and to do list. Needless to say, I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with the way the iCal publish function works. One solution might be to 'unpublish' the calendar, so that I can manage it from iCal on my mac again, but I can't find how to do that.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Kim or Mike,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Before you do anything else, make sure that you use the iCal>File>Back up Database... feature.
In regard to recreating the calendar, if you open the web version of the calendar you can use the "Download" link on the web page to get the calendar on your desktop. Then use iCal to import the download: iCal>File>Import...
Then, after clicking on the published calendar in the source window, if you wish to Unpublish, use the iCal>Calendar>Unpublish... feature.
Since I do not use the Palm, I am unable to address that aspect of your question/problem.

  • ICal events being deleted when syncing with Palm Zire 21

I have been syncing my Palm Zire 21 with iCal successfully for over a year with few problems. A few weeks ago I noticed that almost, but not all of the events on both the Palm device and iCal more than three months old were gone. Then, a few weeks later, I noticed that the events suddenly were all back in the iCal application, but not on the Palm device.
But this week, I used HotSync (as usual) to sync iCal and the Palm device, and the events were gone again. Now I am wondering what on Earth I am doing to cause this. I have read the articles about setting up to sync. I double-checked to be sure I have been syncing the way that is outlined in the instructions in the help articles.
I must have missed something vital. I have been backing up my iCal to my .Mac account using Backup. I am thinking that I can restore the iCal events using my last backup. Can I? And how do I keep this from happening again?
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   "OS10.4.10" "iSync 2.4" "iCal 2.0.5" "Hotsync 3.1"

Found the issue for me. The events are not deleted, but filtered in the standard calendar view. The iPhone shows everything as it should. Outlook 2003 has all the events to as seen when going to categories view.
It seems that once events pass on the iPhone and then a sync via iTunes to Outlook 2003 the "All Day Event" field is removed from the calendar entry.
Creating another Day/Week/Month View in outlook 2003 that has a filter to only include calendar entries where the "All Day Event" field "does not exist" will allow viewing the "hidden" past events.
Hopefully this will be fixed VERY SOON.

  • ICal not syncing with Palm Tungsten E

I had to reinstall my operating system to the original Tiger. I reinstalled my Palm Desk top and updated it to 4.2. and synced with the Palm. Then I did a combined update to 10.4.6 & iSync 2.2. I added the Palm devise and did the original sync with the isync button. When I went to sync again later as I had added dates on the Palm I used the hot sync on the Palm. The dates did not show up on the iCal. How do I resolve this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Can you describe what you did a little more clearly? I understand that you reinstalled Mac OS X 10.4, the Palm Desktop 4.2.1—revision D, I presume, from a downloadable package obtained from Palm—then synchronized with the Palm Desktop. You then updated to Mac OS X 10.4.6 by applying a Mac OS Update package, and added your Tungsten E to iSync, presumably using the Enable Palm OS Syncing… option under the iSync Devices menu. Is that correct?
When you first synchronized using iSync 2.2, did you choose the Merge the data in iCal and on your Palm, or did you choose to Replace the data on your Tungsten E?
Following your initial synchronization with iSync 2.2, you added, changed or deleted some events on your Tungsten, correct? And those modified records did not show up in iCal after yet another synchronization event, correct?
The reason that I ask these specific questions is that individuals use such terms as Palm, Palm Desktop, HotSync, iSync button and so on almost interchangeably. By Palm, for example, you could be referring to your device, the Palm Desktop package—including the HotSync Manager and Transport Monitor—installed on your computer, or simply the Palm Desktop contact and calendaring application alone. Depending upon what you are actually trying to convey, the issues and therefore, the resolution of those issues, can be very different.

  • Unable to sync with Palm Desktop

Here's my problem. I haven't been able to sync with my elderly Palm IIIC for about 2 years. Now my daughter gave me her Palm Zire 31. All my data are in my Palm Desktop on my iMac G5. Somewhere along the way I tried using iSync and got a bunch of stuff in my Mac address book. So I did a hard reset on the Palm Zire 31, then successfully hot-synced on my G5. But my nice address from my Palm Desktop file isn't coming over, just the crummy one from the Mac address book I think. My Palm Desktop address file has all the names in categories etc. I have tried making sure I have the correct conduits for syncing with the Palm desktop, and I tried telling the Sync operation to override with the Mac contents. I just want to move all my address data from my Palm Desktop on my Mac to the Zire. Any help here?

If you want to move all of the address data from your Palm Desktop to your handheld organizer, there is only one way to do it: using the Palm-supplied conduits to do so, not iSync and it's built-in iSync Palm Conduit. The transfer of all of the data from the Palm Desktop, including categories, simply is not supported by iSync or the iSync Palm Conduit.
The Missing Sync for Palm OS is an alternative, but you have to plan carefully how you do this, as you must first move the data from the Palm Desktop to either your device—or, through an export/import process—directly into both iCal and the Address Book. iCal task data doesn't survive this process, only calendaring data. In either event, categories don't transfer.
You'll have to perform some manual categorization on both your device and in the Address Book, and iSync will not support these changes. It won't reverse or otherwise modify them, it simply won't synchronize them. This is the case because you must overwrite the data on your handheld the first time you use the Missing Sync for Palm OS to synchronize.
The Missing Sync for Palm OS will, but only when using Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later, and an advanced Palm device with Palm OS 5.4 or later on board, as I recall. Only the Z22 would qualify, if that contention is true. Here is a list of Palm OS versions tied to specific handheld devices:
    http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=69,E=0000000000412440418,K=2 589,Sxi=8,useTemplate=Case.tem,CASE=10714
My Treo 600, with Palm OS 5.2.1, does not qualify as an advanced device and does not support categorization in the same manner as later devices do.

  • Can't sync Palm with Mac through iSync, only syncs with Palm Desktop

I have an older Palm Tungsten T3 that I use basically only to run a medical application that I need at work (ePocrates, which has its own conduit and auto-updates itself with hotsyncs). I haven't tried to sync it to my Mac for a long time. I use iCal for my calendaring needs, sync it with my iPod, and ignore the old stuff that's on the Palm, which I hardly ever even sync.
Today I had to reinstall the Epocrates software, and decided while I was at it I'd try to get the Palm syncing with the Mac (iCal, contacts, etc) again because it would be nice for it to show the same calendar data.
I reinstalled the newest version of Palm Desktop from scratch. Installed the ePocrates software on top of it. I have iSync 2.4. My Palm was not listed as a device initially. I chose "Enable Palm OS Syncing" from the menu; iSync then went through a series of steps in which it disabled several conduits (presumably to no longer sync with the Palm Desktop), then told me to enable the iSync Palm conduit through the HotSync manager, which I did.
I now show the Palm as a device on iSync, but it has a yellow caution icon over it and I'm not sure why. Clicking on it shows an options dialog. I chose for the first sync I wanted to erase everything on the device and then sync with the Mac. My syncs appear to work, but when the data is checked it seems to sync only with Palm Desktop. The old junky data on the Palm was not erased as requested. Newer calendar events and contacts from my Mac have not made it to the Palm. The ePocrates auto update conduit is working fine but that's the only part that is.
Any idea what's incompatible, or what I'm doing wrong here?

I have The Missing Sync and used it to sync my palm TX. I am now in the process of trying to get iCal going properly again. No longer have any calender views in iCal and the week views don't show until I have opened a month view and then go back to the week view. Very bizzare. Also have a heap of untitled calendar views in the drop down list option when looking at the info on any event - these calendar views are not accessible anywhere else though.
I'm not sure if it is Missing Sync or something I did wrong at present. Will also throw the problem to the Missing Sync people to see what they say. Will let you know. It seemed to work really well without needing the palm desktop!

  • Events after syncing with Palm

After syncing with my Palm, iCal has spread many but not all one-day events over two days. For instance, Halloween in iCal is now a two day holiday from October 30 through October 31. My cousin's birthday is now two days long as well. BUT, Easter is still just one day, as is my father's birthday. It's really weird. The two day spread does not happen on my Palm.

Other users have reported this very same issue after updating to iOS 5.
If you are using iCloud, try changing a contact in your iCloud.com. Then see if the Edit button reappears in the Contacts App.
I can no longer designate a custom title for additional email addresses within a contact. I can edit contacts and add new ones, I just cannot designate an additional email address for a particular contact as home, or work, or any of the other titles that should be available. iOS 5 has caused some weird glitches for some of us.

  • Palm Sync with Palm OS5

    Hi there

    - the notice field of the palm occurs problems with the attendee-list of OraCal

    - events have to be longer than 5 minutes within OraCal (the palm OS allows 0 minutes events)
    - repeating events synchronised from palm to OraCal won't be accepted from OraCal
    - dayevents have another meaning for the palm OS than for OraCal.

Moving backward up the list, you can easily delete the contents of iCal and the Address Book without removing the applications. Before doing so, be sure you have a contemporary back of your handheld records in the Palm Desktop. Choosing the wrong option to synchronize, if you choose to do so, can result in the loss of all of the data on your handheld.
To delete contact records, highlight any Groups you have created and press the backspace or delete key, then confirm the deletion. To delete calendar records, highlight a calendar and press the delete key. You are NOT asked to confirm a calendar deletion, and can only restore one—if you mistakenly delete it—by immediately selecting the Undo Remove Calendar.
When installing and using the Missing Sync for Palm OS, you are instructed to REPLACE the data on your handheld with data from your computer during the initial synchronization. The best way for you to do this it to…
    • empty iCal and the Address Book as described above
    • export your Palm Desktop calendar and task data as a vCal file, and your contacts as a vCard file
    • import these files into the appropriate now-empty OS X application just by double-clicking each one
At this stage, you should synchronize using the Mark/Space Contact, Events and Tasks conduits, making sure that you set each one to Overwrite handheld with desktop data. That action will replace all of your handheld data with the calendaring, task and contact data in iCal and the Address Book - the same data you just imported into them from the vCal and vCard files exported from the Palm Desktop.
When it is installed, configured and synchronized according the specific instructions provided by Mark/Space, the Missing Sync for Palm OS and its Mark/Space conduits are a far more powerful and reliable application than iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit are.
You can install and use iSync alone, but the Missing Sync does a far better job than iSync.

  • What is the CORRECT way to sync with Palm device?

Under Tiger, do you still need to open the iSync app before syncing with a Palm device? (mine is a Sony Clie SJ22).
I used to have to sync in this order:
    1. open the iSync app
    2. click "Sync Now" in .Mac Sync in the menu bar
    3. press the Hotsync button on my Clie.
    It worked.
But I just found this support doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302120
which says: "To sync your Palm OS device with iSync, press the HotSync button on the Palm cradle, cable, or the device itself. Both HotSync and iSync should open during the synchronization. Note: You must initiate the sync from the Palm device or the device will be skipped during the iSync sync."
I'm confused. I tried doing it this way and iSync does NOT open automatically when I press the Hotsync button--but the .Mac status in the Menu bar is turning to show it's syncing, and my ical items SEEM to be getting updated.
Can someone help clarify how this is supposed to work? Is this new in Tiger 10.4.4?

The correct way to synchronize a Palm device using iSync 2 or later is to first insure that all three options in the General section or your iSync Preferences… dialog are enabled:
√ Enable syncing on this computer
√  Show HotSync reminder when syncing Palm OS devices
√ Show status in menu bar
The each time your synchronize, you should launch iSync. [Or, alternatively, you should have it launched at login and hidden, so that it is running each time you press your HotSync button.]
The article is mistaken about the HotSync Manager needing to be launched prior to initiating a synchronization, as that task is accomplished whenever you press the HotSync button on your cable or cradle, or otherwise initiate a synchronization event.
It is true that you must initiate it from the Palm device, a cable or a cradle. Selecting Sync Now from beneath the Sync Status item in your menu bar will not launch the HotSync process, and your Palm device will be skipped.
These are substantial changes to iSync, which came with the release of iSync 2 and .Mac Sync under Mac OS X 10.4 about seven months ago, and they are a giant step backward for Palm users.
For that, and many other reasons - including the instability and lack of reliability with iSync 2 and later, I suggest that you take a look at the Missing Sync for Palm OS from Mark/Space:
    http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_palmos.php
It goes a long way toward addressing the long-term short comings of the iSync Palm Conduit by replacing it with three Mark/Space conduits - Contacts, Events and Tasks - and make synchronization of your Palm device a single-button process once again. It circumvents iSync and deactivates the iSync Palm Conduit and the HotSync Manager, eliminating three troublesome components that are a part of your current configuration. Your SONY Clié PEG-SJ22 is one of the many models supported by this package.

  • ICal Compatibility with PALM

I am new to Apple- but so far am very positively impressed.
I have a Palm Pilot and have installed the Palm Software on my Mac. It runs fine.
Is there any way to have iCal replace or at least import from Palm my calendar and address book?
Then , can iCal support my handheld palm device ? I t is a Zire?
    Thank you ,
    Allan

Palm pretty much gave up any real support of OS X a couple of years ago. iCal is sync-able to your Palm but not through the Palm Desktop software. You need to get something like Missing Sync for Palm OS. I used it (pre-iPod Touch days) and it sync'd my Treo and Tungsten quite happily. It's not very expensive and can be downloaded at http://www.missingsync.com/.
On the importing from Palm calendar and address book--just be sure to sync your Palm one last time with the Palm Desktop software before you install Missing Sync. On your first sync with the new software, your info will come off the Palm and into Address Book and iCal.
Another side note--If I remember right, you should uninstall the Palm Desktop software prior to installing the Missing Sync software. (Just sync your Palm that one last time before doing that.)
