ICal won't recognize calendars in a calendar group

First - I do not use the cloud, everything is stored on my local hardDisk
Second - the problem is only with iCal. Other programs can see calandars within calendar groups just fine.
Third and most importantly - I apologize in advance for misspelling calendar (or anything else) as I am sure to do so many times.
My problem: All of a sudden iCal stopped recognizing anything inside a calendar group.
I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.3.
I have multiple calendar groups, all containing calendars inside them and a slew of events for each.
When I click on a calandar within a group and add a new event it popps up with the right color, indicating that it will be saved within that calandar group, yet inside the actual event (in the edit screen) the calandar associated with it is null. Specifically I can't choose anything because everthing is grayed out. The only thing showing are the names of the various calendar groups I have, but none of the calandars inside those groups show up for me to select them.
Notice that the new even is GREEN indicating that it will go into the World Holiday's calendar inside the group Holidays. Yet inside the details of the even it shows that the associated calandar is Lightfoot, the only calendar not inside a group. The only way to make World Holidays an option is to move it out of the group, but that defeats the purpose of groups.
As stated before, the calendar groups show up and work fine in other programs, the problem is unique to iCal alone. Here is a screenShot of mail as I try to add a new even from there.
See how it is giving me the option to put the event in ANY of the calandars whether they are inside a group or not. This is how iCal was working up until Tuesday the 19th. This is also what I just finished doing when it broke. I have tried the following with no success:
- deleting all the calendars/calendar groups and working from a clean/error free archive of iCal
- deleteing my cache files
- installing a dummy user with admin privelges to see if the problem ports over
- reinstalling OS X (not erasing my data but in essence reinstalling iCal)
- verifying the disk to find any errors (there were none)
- reparing disk permissions (they were all fine but I repaired them anyway)
- contacting apple support (nice guy, but so far can't figure it out either)
It appears to be a hierarcy issue inside of iCal alone. It is as if anything inside a calendar group (calandars and events) is unreadable by iCal, like the hierarchical structure is corrupt or there is a bad line of code in there somewhere. Any ideas on what I should try and do to fix it?
Thanks!

I too am having this difficulty.  It just showed up today (3/27) and nearest as I can figure, is somehow tied to the latest Mountain Lion update since I just installed that from the App Store.  That said, I'm no closer to figuring out what to do about it.
I am also running 10.8.3 and am steering clear of the Cloud because it doesn't support calendar groups.
Like you, I can get things in the right calendar/color if I click that calendar then add the event.  But if I then go into the individual event it is being labeled as something else.  I think it is actually putting it in the correct calendar, because if I click between events and watch the calendar bar on the left, it switches between the different calendars and groups appropriately.  It is a bit frustrating though that if I want to switch an event's calendar assignment, I now have to re-enter it, rather than just switching it through the edit pane or by right-clicking.
Here's hoping someone out there will see this and have a solution.
Cheers!

I am trying to add an email alarm to an ical event, and it says that the address has to be in my address book...which it is. I click on the email link to add the alarm... and it keeps prompting me that the address has to be in my address book. What am I doing wrong?

  • Ical won't highlight calendar events in week view

When I click on a certain calendar, all the events from that calendar don't become highlighted like they did in Tiger iCal. This is annoying. Anyone else have the same issue?

I'm having the same problem too. I suspect it's a deliberate UI change on Apple's part, so I think everyone needs to lobby them to persuade them to change it back, since it's obviously not as good!

  • ICal won't import calendars

I am finding that I cannot import my co-workers' calendars as I once did.
Before: I'd delete old calendar; drag new calendar from email or desktop (where emailed calendar was saved); be good to go.
Now: When I do the above, no new claendar appears in list of calendars. when I turn iCal off and restart it, the calendar name appears, but there is no data within it!
I was able to do this pprocess successfully with one of two calendars, yesterday, wheich about knocked me out of my chair.
    Help!

I'm having a similar issue. I would publish my work GroupWise calendar to my website and then subscribe to the .ics file in iCal. This worked great up to about 2 weeks ago. Now I'm getting "Error While Refreshing: Request encountered an unexpected error on subscribed calendars (code 4)." Thanks in advance for any assistance with this because it is driving me crazy!

  • ICal won't load calendars

Since the security update two days ago, after which I reinstalled my system, iCal gets hung trying to load my calendars. I have installed the new security update, that did not resolve this issue. How can I force iCal to finish opening without trying to load my calendars and then perhaps I could try to import them? I am using Snow Leopard.

May be the problem is with the iCal icon/alias on the Dock  itself.
Try to launh the application from Application Folder.
Removing it and putting new one might solve that problem.
    Hope it helps.

  • ICal won't publish calendar to mobileMe... ideas?

I've used iCal for years but since the changeover to me.com I can't get my iCal calendars to publish. When I click on "Publish calendar" it says it's published successfully, but when I click on the visit page button I get "page not found" error message.
    Anybody have any ideas?
    MJM

    bnance,
...are you saying your published calendar can currently be accessed from your ical.me.com link and that just ours is not working or was your answer a theoretical one?
Mine works as advertised. I did have to unpublish, but that was in July. The calendar has auto published without problems since that time.
The common clue that I notice between the OP and your system is that neither has been updated to the most current version of OS X available for the Tiger/Leopard. I would therefore advise updating these systems using the appropriate Combo Update (OS X 10.4.11/OS X 10.5.5).
    Good Luck.

  • Importing problem-iCal won't recognize .csv files

I've recently upgraded to 10.4.9 from 10.3.9 on my Power PC iMac G5. The old version of iCal had no problem seeing downloaded .csv files and importing them. The new version won't see them or import them. Under 10.3.9, all I had to do was double click on the downloaded .csv file and it would import all events into iCal. Now, nothing happens. I'm a basic user and don't know about scripting or anything else. Any help?

    YES! SUCCESS!
I found two ways of doing this. After searching the net, I found this online app on this guys website that worked the best:
    http://manas.tungare.name/projects/yahoo2ical/
It says it's a "yahoo" csv converter, but it worked fine for my outlook csv file.
The other option is, if you have an account with google, like a gmail account, you can use their google calendar to import your csv file. Once you've done that, you can subscribe to that calendar you imported via the "share" option. Just get the .ics address. This took a couple tries on google's site to import, but it worked.

  • ICloud Calendar Groups

Since the arrival of iCloud, iCal only allows me to create Calendar Groups on "My Mac". This feature is currently unavailable on the iCloud calendars. As a teacher, I need to create groups to manage all my different classes (just like a folder of different calendars). Before, I could uncheck my one Calendar group and everything included was removed from the calendar view. This is helpful to manage personal vs. professional life in the same app. When I now sync iCal with iCloud, my Calendar Groups are undone and all the different classes are shown as different calendars.  I wish apple would look into that matter more seriously.

    is this still happening?
i see i can create a Calendar Group On My Mac only.  I wonder what the trade off is between having a Calendar On My Mac vs. iCloud?  i was going to move them all to iCloud, but maybe it's not necessary nor work loosing the Calendar Groups functionality.

update to my original post:  after searching since for the past 10 days - I did want to pass along to others with an iphone calendar sync problem the following resource:
Mac OS X: Resetting the SyncServices folder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627
This is the preferred solution for problems with sync with calendar and other apps between iphone and MaciOS.  This did solve the problem which developed that no items from iCal were copying to Iphone, such as new calendars I would add, but the original problem has not been fixed by this reset.

  • ICal won't show any calendar in any account - reset?

    Hi all,
After Google's update to their calendar systems, I've been experience some weired behaviour in my calendars (both OSX iCal and iOS Calendar).
So i thought of resetting both.
On the iPhone it all went well: I turned off both Google's and iCloud's calendar services, birthdays from Facebook and set up again successfully; now it works perfectly.
On the Mac, iCal failed, i.e. kept failing at syncing between Google's calendar server and iCal (iCloud seemed to work fine, though). So, after trying a couple of times to turn on and off the sync service of both iCloud and Google from Preferences and from iCal, I decided to remove all the files in ~/Library/Calendars and matching ~/Preferences/*iCal*. This resulted in both iCloud and Google's accounts not syncing anymore.
So I tried again to activate and deactivate both accounts using System Preferences. Fail.
    Using iCal interface. Fail.
Fail: iCal keeps saying: updating calendars but many hours have passed now and nothing happens. The other times I reset iCal it took me like 30 seconds to have it work properly. Moreover, I don't think is a server side issue (like: too many trials, wait some time) because on the iPhone everything works pretty much ok.
How do I solve this issue? I'm thinking about a complete reset but I don't seem able to find the correct files to remove.
    Thanks,
    Riccardo

    Mario,
    You are welcome.
I am just curious, how can you tell the calendar is "incomplete"? And, if that is the reason it won't work, why is it listed on the apple website as being a valid calendar??
I subscribed to the calendar and looked for current entries in the iCal window. It had some erroneous data, and since it did not work for either of us, I concluded that your system was OK and the calendar was invalid.
The iCalShare calendar on the other hand had appropriate and up-to-date information.
If you desire you can provide iCal Feedback to inform Apple that the Red Wings calendar is not correct.
    ;~)

  • Since installing Mavericks, my HP Printer adds an extra page to every print job, and iCal won't synch via iTunes with the Calendar on my iPhone 4s. Can Mavericks be uninstalled?

Can Mavericks be uninstalled? Don't know if the discussion title pulled in all of my problem, so here it is again. Since installing Mavericks, my HP Printer adds an extra page to every print job, and iCal won't synch via iTunes with the Calendar on my iPhone 4s.
And no, I was a bad boy and had not been Time Machining. Guess I will now.
    So, can Mavericks be uninstalled?

Uninstall CleanMyMac2 >  How To Uninstall CleanMyMac
Uninstall Cocktail > Uninstall Cocktail for Mac OS X
Third party cleaning utilities are not necessary on a Mac and can only cause problems.
Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you >  Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks
Growl is un necessary and can slow  the system down > Growl - Removing Growl
If you want to monitor the system, use the pre installed Activity Monitor app located in HD > Applications > Utilities

  • Ical won't let me write on a subscribed calendar

    Hi,
In my office we have 7 calendars hosted on a webdav server. When i subscribe to them using ical, i would like to be able to read and wirte information on them, but ical, does not let me write on them as it says they are read only...
The thing is i want my secretary to write on my calendar (as she is using sunbird on a pc) and i also want to write it from ical, but ical won't let me do it-.. :S
Any ideas on what can i do??
    Thank you very much guys!!

The present version of iCal supports only a read-only subscription service, which is openly published via .Mac or a private WebDAV server, and cannot be password protected. There is no workaround.
In a few weeks, Mac OS X 10.5 will ship with a completely rewritten version of iCal, one which complies with the CalDAV standard and which will integrate with iCal Server and Teams. You can get some idea of what's coming by looking here:

  • Creating reminders in ical to match calendar group

When I'm in iCal, how can I have reminders to match my calendars. For example, I have a calendar for my work events, can I create a reminder for that calendar. Right now, if I try to manually create a reminder list, if I use the same name it won't let me.

The following worked for me under 10.7.4 for calendars "On my mac". Don't know if it'll work with iCloud calendars
    Quit iCal
Go to ~/Library/Calendars (if you can't see the library folder, execute this line in the Terminal: chflags nohidden ~/Library/"
There you'll see many folders with coded names ending in ".calendar". Each one of those contains one of your calendars. Open one of these folders and prewiew the info.plist file. There you should find a <key> named Title which has a <string> which contains the name of the calendar. Once you've found the calendar whose name you want to change, press the "Open with Property list editor" which should show up in Preview and change the name of the calendar. Save the changes in the Property list editor and you'll be almost done.
Before reopening iCal, you have to remove the Calendar Cache from the ~/Library/Calendars folder. This is an automatically generated file which is used by iCal to speed up. By deleting it, you basically force iCal to read all the calendars from scratch, including the one whose name we just changed.
If everything went well, the next time you launch iCal you should see a progress bar with the message "Upgrading iCal calendars", and the right name on your reminder list.

  • ISync don't recognize calendars

    hi,
anyone knows why iSync don't recognize iCal calendars?
I made a "clean install" with Leopard a couple of days ago, and import the iCal backup (from Tiger) with success. now I'm trying to sync my phone, and iSync don't recognize the imported calendars (just appears the default "work" and "home", and they don't exist on my imported calendar!)
    annoying...
(everything ok with address book synchronization).
    thanks for any help

minutes ago this happens to me:
    - I export (not backup) every calendar (to desktop)
    - quit iCal
    - delete the "~/library/calendars" and the "~/application support/iSync" content (not the folder, just the content inside)
    - open iCal, and the default "home" and "work" folders appear
-then I import one of the calendars and (mysteriously - for me) all the other exported calendars appear automatically in iCal
    - I open iSync, and all my calendars are there
    - sync with phone, with success
    annoying to me, but solved...
