ICal write privileges were switched on wifes computer

ICal 2.2 write privileges were switched be either .mac Sync or Backup on my wifes computer when I tried to merge my calendar with hers. I own the .mac account and I now now have the problem that she can't add events to her own calendar. I most likely caused the problem by clicking the replace option but quickly hit the cancel and then merge. She did lose all the old events but not the new ones. GOT LUCKY. There is only one user account so we don't need the multi user option. Just want to switch the write privilege back to her.

I do not get the same Data error message as Kim but the message "A problem occurred while extracting some files. Check available space on your computer and the write privileges on the destination folder." is identical.
I have full permissions as the Adminitrator as well as being the Owner in the Advanced Security tab under Properties. I have 24GB of space for the install of CS4 Design Premium....Help!

Audiobooks are not available for redownloading, so you need to transfer them from your old computer, or get them from your backup. How did you copy your iTunes contact from your old computer to our new one?

You can then each sync your calendars to iCloud by going to System Preferences>iCloud and checking 'calendars'.
Now one of you can privately share a calendar with write privileges to the other:

Lost write privileges to external USB hard drive- please help!

I've got an external Western Digital 250GB USB hard drive that has been chugging along just fine until about a month ago, when somehow I seemed to have lost write privileges to the top level directory. I"m not sure if this happened when I installed an Mac OS update, or what, as I use the drive as backup and didn't notice it for a while.
The drive appears in the sidebar with a tiny lock icon, and when I try to copy a file from my internal HD to the external (top level directory, or drag the items right onto the icon), the following things happen:
Dialog box says "The item "foo" cannot be moved because "External HD" cannot be modified", with an authenticate button, which I then click.
After I authenticate, I get the error msg "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."
But I *CAN** copy files directly into a folder that already exists on the external drive, but I cannot create new folders in the top level directory.
I have tried the following, to no avail:
1) "get info" on the external drive, checkign the permissions. In the Ownership and Permissions section, it says "You can Read & Write", and under details:
Owner: my account (dimmed) and access level is "read & write".
Group: my account (dimmed) Access: Read only
Others: No access
Ignore ownership on this volume (unchecked).
The fact that my account was named both as owner and group seemed odd, since in Group the access was "read only". I clicked on the little lock icon next to Owner, authenticated, and was allowed to change the Group settings. I changed the Group access to "read & Write", but it's not "sticking" -- when I close teh details field and reopen it, or close the get info window and reopen, the Group access settings go back to "read only".
2) I've also, of course, tried repairing permissions on my internal startup drive, which did not help the matter. Also in Disk Utility, I verified/repaired the offendin external USB drive (no problems), Verify/Repair permissions were dimmed for this drive (I assume becuase it doesn't have MacOS X installed on it?)
3) Searched the forums, Western Digital support, etc. and I cannot seem to figure out what has gone wrong.
4) When I connect the drive to another computer (my iBook) the situation is the same. Also, when I create a new admin user account and try to access the drive from that account, I still cannot write to the drive.

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and enter the following:
chflags nouchg
followed by a space; next, drag the disk into the Terminal window and press Enter. The lock should now be gone.

Recent versions of Mac OS X create a group with the same name whenever you create an account from the Setup Assistant or System Preferences. The Group permissions don't apply in this case.

That is correct. The Repair Permissions mechanism uses data from the /Library/Receipts/ folder on a disk to function, and this data is only present on disks which have Mac OS X installed.

I have updated my computer to iTunes 10.5 and my iPhone 3Gs to OS 5 and it has wiped my music, photos and video etc. I want to load my data from my wifes computer and it refuses because that computer does not have OS 5..Help

I wanted to upgtade my iPhone software to Ver5 but it said I had to upgrade iTunes to Ver10.5. Once the updates were complete I saw that all my music,photo' and video etc had been erased from both my iTunes AND my iPhone!!!!
I tried connecting to my wifes computer and her iTunes in order to back up my music etc and it will not allow it and states that my iPhone needs iTumes Ver10.5!!
This is very inconvenient and I am scared that if I update my wifes computer to Ver 10.5 we will lose that data also and as her phone is an older 2G iPhone, Ver10.5 may not work there!!

i had the same problem but i just got a new video converter and made it convert videos to ipod/iphone format and then put them into itunes. i would suggest GOM encoder as the encoder can convert them and then once they're finished converting, put them automatically into your itunes for you. from there you can just sync them to your ipod.

I recently had my computer serviced. I re-downloaded Thunderbird (getting a newer version), and retrieved my saved email. Now, Thunderbird keeps asking me to compact, but when I do, I get this error message:
The folder 'Inbox' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.
Obviously, since I'm getting mail all the time, I have write privileges, and disk space. The question is whether there's a setting I need to specify, or whether Thunderbird is writing to a special partition that may have gotten write-protected when my computer was in the hospital - or whether this is related to a known bug.

The only know bug I can see is probably your anti virus is trying to scan the file when the new inbox is created leaving Thunderbird to think the file was not created.
As an experimental / diagnostic process. Restart the machine in safe mode with networking using Microsoft instructions for [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7] then try the compact. If it works I was most likely right. If it does not, another idea must surface.

Yes you can switch from Mac to PC, but with some caveats:
Windows PCs cannot directly read a Mac formatted HD (or iPod).
Macs can read and write to a Windows formatted HD if it is in FAT32. Macs with OS X10.3 and higher will read a Windows NTFS formatted HD, but no Macs can write to an NTFS HD. iPods only function when formatted in FAT32. iPods cannot function as a MP3 player if formatted in NTFS.
Using Windows, you can try running XPlay (Software For Cross-Platform Functionality)

Download and install the Windows versions of iTunes and the iPod updater (but do not restore or update the iPod on the PC, yet).

ICal events all deleted after syncing with computer

I synced my iPhone and iMac two days ago, and only this morning realized that ALL my events in my iPhone's iCal are now gone!! I've been keeping track of several important doctor's appointments, my child's school events, personal medical issues, etc and now they're all deleted. After checking, it seems SOME of the events from June were transferred onto the computer's iCal, but then "stopped" there and nothing else was copied. My phone and computer have synced successfully many times, always "sharing" information but never deleting! What's wrong? Can this information be recovered? In some cases, my phone was the only place this information was recorded, so now it's gone. Thanks everyone for your help!!!

I'm having the exact same problem as described above, and I'm a little desperate to get my iCal entries back as well...
Concerning the question of whether I have a backup: I'm actually not sure, maybe you can tell me whether I do? The situation is the following:
I entered a (significant!) number of iCal entries on my iphone directly. The iphone, in turn, is being connected to my MB Pro at home, as well as my PC at work. Podcasts and such are updated from my PC, so I'm guessing that the PC is the primary iTunes linked to the phone. When I connected my iphone to the iTunes on my MB Pro, however, it asked whether I would like to synch as well. As I had a number of iCal entries on my MB Pro that I wanted to also see on my iphone, I agreed. It warned me (like many times before) that this would chance more than 5% of the iCal entries, but it never before had deleted any of them! When I checked again, all my direct iphone iCal-entries had disappeared.
I have Time Machine installed and made a backup of my MB Pro just a few days ago - I'm suspecting though, that if the iphone iCal entries are gone from the iphone, my MB Pro iCal did not remember any of them either, correct?
PLEASE, if someone could help explain this situation, I'd be incredibly grateful! I've never had it happen before that iCal (on either machine) deleted anything...

How come?! Also, even with the stats from yesterday, I already couldn't burn to +R's anymore, meanwhile, my +RW's can still be read, erased, and re-burned. I don't understand what is going on. How do I go about remedying this situation? I am also unable to read any of my old burned copies of movies on +R's. All blank or burned +R's whirr a bit in the drive and then get ejected. Regular store bought movies can still be read. I have been burning to +Rs for over a year now with no problem and have gone thru like 200 +Rs without a hitch until a couple of days ago.
I've already gotten screwed over by Repairtech's fraudulent 3-year extended warranty and my Apple 1-year warranty ran out over a month ago.

ok, that changed the dvd-write privileges back to what they were in system profiler, but still unable to detect +r blank & burned dvds. what can i do now? or might u have an idea of what the problem could be? everything else able to be detected. i have tried hp, verbatim & mitsubishi +r's. can't detect my burned hp & verbatim +r's anymore & can't detect blank verbatim (anymore either) & mitsubishi (new brand i'm trying) +r's.

CS3 Installation "check disc space and write privileges" message

I recently purchased a new desktop. I deactivated CS3 from my old computer (Windows Vista OS) and downloaded CS3 to the new(Windows 7 OS), After it shows 100% extraction, I get a "A problem occured while extracting some files. Check available space on your computer and write privileges for destination folder." Not sure what to do from here and Adobe does not offer any phone support for my archaic version of PS.
I tried out copying the downloaded ADBEPSHPCS3_WWE file to C:\ as suggested in a previous post, however to no avail.

Like I said, my desktop is new--I'm not a techno geek just yet, but it's an ASUS, Intel dual core, I've got 340GB of 372GB available on C:\ and 550GB of 550GB on D:\ ...Would space be an issue with these stats?? The product is downloaded, and when I go to start the instal, it looks like it's doing well at extracting the files and indeed I can access the setup.exe file, but when I try to open it, I get the Windows "Do you want to allow this program to make changes to this computer?" When I click yes, that window goes away, but nothing else seems to happen??

OK what's up. I'd like to buy the upgrade! Chronic error won't let me install. Install error below.

So am I mistaken when this looks like a 32bit program on my 64bit system?
So all the genius' at Adobe and the LR5 team, this is a chronic issue all over the web. What is the fix?

Yes! On a 64-bit Windows system you have two different folders for programs. One is called "Program Files (x86)" - this one is for 32-bit programs; the other is called "Program Files" - and that's the one you have to select for the installation of 64-bit programs.
Also, be careful when the installer wants to send the program to the desktop. The desktop has a limited capacity. And when you have too many items on it, the capacity is not enough for installation of a program. And Lr5 is not small - heck, it's a 810 MB file!
Rather do this: On your C drive in the folder "Program Files" create a folder "Adobe" - if it's not there already. Then in the folder "Adobe" create a folder "Lightroom 5" or "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5". When the installer comes up for unzipping, direct it to this folder. Then when the InstallShield comes up for the installation direct it again to this folder. Then you know where everything is regarding Lr5 - and everything is in one folder.

CS4 Install Error - ... write privileges ... ???

During the extraction of the upgrade version of CS4 (about 95-100% completed) I got the error "A problem occurred while extracting some files. Check available space on your computer and the write privileges on the destination folder". I have 690GB free on a 750GB drive so I know space is not a problem. I'm running XP w SP3. Any ideas on how to resolve?

But is there any limitation or quota on your temp directory? Please check C:\Documents and Settings\Rudy\Local Settings\Temp. Clean out the directory if necessary and attempt another install. Also check the status of system restore, updates and the trash can. It may be advisable to clean them out, too. Unfortunately Windows has some not so smart automatisms for all this stuff and chokes on itself, so to speak, under some circumstances. A good way to cover all those aspects is the use of CCcleaner, a freely available third-party tool.

Well, if they were synced fomr a computer then the iPhone says the computer "owns" them for instructional purposes. You have two options.
1) Plug your iPhone up to any computer with iTunes. You can get itunes at www.itunes.com Then tell it to sync photos, but then select no photos or an empty folder. This will override what the previous computer put on your iPhone.
2) Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings and say goodbye to everything including those synced photos. If you make a quick backup first in iCloud (be sure it finishes) then you can restore form your iCloud backup via Wifi and those synced photos wont be there. The following steps may help you in troubleshooting this ....
iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
