Icas controller blocking bus
My friend has a G4 iBook. recently he is just getting this message: icas controller blocking bus.
Anyone know what has happened here?? It will not start up at all.
Thanks
Assuming that he has all external devices disconnected, it sounds like a logicboard failure.

Dear all
Has anyone else experienced a G4 QuickSilver gradually failing? A friend complained about hers not booting, partially booting or getting past login and then hanging.
I took a look at it last night, and the only useful info I could gather was while running fsck in single-user mode: the repeated error "ioata controller blocking bus".
Over the course of two hours we tried 15 or 20 restarts and/or resets. On most occasions we only got as far as the grey sunshine screen. On the two times we got to login, there were disturbing squeaks/grating noises from the hard drive. After logging in, we got a SBOD within 10 minutes.
The box wouldn't boot from an authorised Tiger install CD (yes, CD) in either the internal or an external drive. It wouldn't boot from a bootable FireWire drive. Starting up with alt held down got us to the blue "select startup disk" screen, but no disks were shown as being available.
I tried all I could think of - repaired permissions one one of the occasions we did get logged in, reset PRAM, reseated RAM. The original hardware test CD reported no errors. Eventually I gave up.
Having Googled the "ioata controller" error, I'm pretty sure that the hard drive is failing. My friend is going to take her G4 to the local Mac authorised dealer, but she's concerned about losing photos and music (whoops, no backup...).
Just wondered if anyone has been here before and managed to get their data back, or had any other ideas?
Thanks,
HHi, HD -
The original drive on my G4/733 died in such a manner that the Mac would not boot to anything - not to another internal drive, nor a CD, nor an external drive, nor even to an emergency boot Zip disk. Once I disconnected that drive the machine would boot to anything.
That's one test to see if the fault lies with a hard drive itself - disconnect the hard drive and try booting to a CD. A G4 should be able to boot to a CD even if there is no hard drive present.
In my case, I suspect the board in the drive failed in such a way that it killed the ATA bus, which in turn blocked everything. Lacking the technology, skills, and parts to try replacing that board, I tossed the drive. Fortunately I had made a 100% backup of that drive onto a partition on the other drive in the machine less that a week before, so lost nothing major.
There are utilities available which can be used to recover data from a drive that is mechanically sound but just won't mount for some reason. Here's a couple of those -
Data Rescue
Virtual Lab
However, if the drive is damaged in such a way that it is no longer mechanically sound - it won't run, or it blocks or won't make the ATA connection - then in order to recover the data you would need to use the services of a commercial data recovery company. Unfortunately, their services are not inexpensive. Here's one such firm -

IOATAController device blocking bus and mystical repair?
In the last days I got the "IOATAController device blocking bus" error on my interal Harddisk (40GB) from my Mac Mini. After searching through archives I thought my HD was dying, so in a lest effort I borrowed my offices DiskWarrior CD to just try how bad it is.
Well, it repaired some errors, never hung (or showed any kind of slow down because of disk errors) and worked fine.
Afterwards I rebooted into single user mode (Cmd+S) and run fsck -fy and got no errors back, nothing in the dmesg about this IOATA error.
Now I am really confused. Could a corrupted filesystem be the culprit for this? Right now I run a full backup (with iBackup) from my HD, so if this works fine, I am really confused what the issue is ...
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.4)gullevek
Well it says nothing else then this line.OK, where exactly are you seeing it? (I know you mentioned dmesg, so I assume you are using Terminal.)
What do you have connected to your Mini when you get this? Your Firewire drives? Any USB devices? Do you still get it if you disconnect whatever is connected (apart from mouse and keyboard of course). Do you only get it when you try to run iBackup?
If you know you can reproduce it, try this: open the Console application and select "system.log". Then reproduce the message and copy anything else that also appears in the log at that time and post it here.
If it is a hardware problem, it is not likely to show up in the tests you mention which will test one device at a time. The "device blocking" implies interference between more than one device, so it is important to disconnect things that aren't needed until this message goes away. -
IODataController device blocking bus
Hi. I can't get into my PB G4. It became unresponsive after installing the latest Software Update for iChat (related or not?). Doing anything sent the machine into constant hard disk churn. I rebooted once. Ran Disk Utility, and no problems were found. Fixed permissions. Same trouble.
Rebooted again, but after 30 minutes and no login screen, tried to boot as a hard-disk to a different Mac -- no luck.
Booted in single-user mode and all I get is:
IODATAController device blocking bus.
This appeared 14 times before finishing:
launched: ioctol(SIOCAIFADDR ipv6): File Exists
Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
Root device is mounted read-only
Simple questions:
What's going on?
Is there anyway around this without having to re-install everything?try an fsck on the PB

DU hang and "IOATAController device blocking bus"
Over the last month or two I have noticed that Disk Utility hangs about 30% of occasions I launch it. I get the spinning rainbow with "searching for disk info". Activity Monitor shows it hung. Force quit won't stop it, but eventually ctrlcmdeject restarts the machine without having to resort to the power button.
Today this happened again, and I looked in the Console and saw that for at least forty minutes before I launched DU I was getting the message "IOATAController device blocking bus" every second or so.
After the restart this message has not appeared again.
I suspect (but at present only have this one event documented) that the previous times DU has hung, the "IOATAController device blocking bus" state also existed.
Googling "IOATAController device blocking bus" doesn't reveal anything very definitive, but impending hard drive failure is mentioned a lot, but usually in conjunction with other problems which I am not seeing.
I have Smartreporter running but it has not reported any problems.
I have four internal 1 Tb drives, and a Sonnet E4P card with four more drives connected, but these are only powered on to make back ups, and weren't on during this mornings hang.
I have not noticed any other problems, and Disk Utility reports no errors.
If it is impending HD failure, I can't see any indication of which drive.
I have at least three copies of everything so I am well protected against data loss but would like to sort this issue out.
Thanks for any help.

Message was edited by: Mike BorehamYou might try running the Apple Hardware Test program (found on the DVD that came with the system when you bought it.) Diskwarrior (Alsoft) can check the drive logs on the drives themselves. I don't have much confidence that any of this will work, but it might.
The only ATA device on your system is the CD/DVD drive(s). The HD are SATA. Can you assume the message is referring to an ATA device and not a SATA device? Not always, error messages are not always exact. But you should start by disconnecting any DVD drives you have and see if the error persists. This may very well be the problem if you have a second DVD/CD installed that is not an Apple product. Apple does not always play nice with other vendors. You should check the cabling for the drive also. Ribbon cable connectors can be a problem when someone has pulled on the cable to disconnect it and loosened the connector crimping. You can look down the cable at the connector and if you see light next to the cable where the connector should be snug to the cable, it has been pulled too hard and may not be making a good connection.
The next, easiest step is to remove the Sonnet card and see if the problem persists.
Removing one device and testing, repalce the device and remove the next may uncover the culprit but not tell you why. -
Anyone have any ideas about a remedy? I am ready to toss it and purchase another. THANKS! Upon power-on, the system eventually goes to the blank screen. Can get to BIOS functions, but beyond that it will not load Windows 7. System was working with Windows 7 prior to this issue. No recent changes or updates made to this system. Stationary - No physical abuse. Five (5) years old. Upon power-on, the screen gives PF keys, which enable me to enter the BIOS: F1 – System Information > Clock still has correct date and time. Hi!
I have exactly the same problem on my HP dv6750, but I can't find an answer that really help me to solve it.
Well, this post shows the description of my problem, so, I don't want this question dies.
If somebody have the solution, please, help me to bring my laptop back to life again.

E5-571 PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller & SM Bus Controller
I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Windows Update says that it is up-to-date. Windows Devices Manager shows a problem with two devices: PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing ControllerSM Bus Controller What are these devices and where do I locate the drivers for them?
That should do it. I've been pleasantly surprised by how well older drivers are working in Windows 10. I had to install Vista 64bit drivers for an ATI video card (the latest working drivers for the card) and they actually worked!

IOATAController device blocking bus
Hi everyone
I just noticed this occurring repeatedly in my system.log... did a quick google search and it seemed to indicate that there's something wrong with one of my hard disks...
I ran TechTool Pro for bad blocks and nothing came up... booted off the Leopard CD and repaired both drives - it found an error on the user drive but was able to repair it...
Now, Disk Utility hangs whenever I try to open it... and force quitting it doesn't work and sort of locks up the system...
Thoughts?
Thanks!
-JustinOK, here's an update...
Checked all my hard drives and there are no bad blocks on any of them... also ran two back-to-back Apple Hardware Tests on the system... no dice...
One thing that i did notice is that when it happens, I seem to be unable to open my Superdrive - on this hunch, I disconnected the power cable to it and the issue appears to have gone away... odd thing is that there was no disc in the drive when this happens...
The "interesting" thing is this started right after I got the machine back from a service shop... they only had the boot drive and the Superdrive... what might they have done that could cause this?
Thoughts?

SM bus and network controller problem
Hi,
I have the above notepad but I cannot connect to the Internet.
In the device manager it shows yellow triangles with a "!" for :
- network controller
- SM Bus Controller
Where can I find the drivers for them?
I tried to put several drivers.
But most of the time a message came saying : "this computer does no meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
Can anyone help ?
Thanks in advance.Hi:

Is the issue that you don't have an IP address? We can fix that (I think ) -
Non blocking jDialog & return values
Hi,
I have (at the center of this problem) 3 classes. A controller class, and two jDialog windows.
The controller initiates the first jDialog window (a main menu window). When the use clicks on a button the second jDialog window opens (a search window).
How do I start the jDialog windows without the controller blocking on the show() calls?solved the non-blocking problem now have another lol!
the method in the controller now does not block and the search dialog is displayed fine.
It displays a list of results and the use double clicks on a result to display the details. I am using a jTable to display the results. The table has a mouse click listener that detects the double click. How do i notify the my controller class that the use has selected a result?
If this is an easy problem, accept my apologies, I am relatively new to java... -
64 Bit Vista Driver for PCI Simple Communications Controller
I installed vista 64 and have everything working well, I think. Only problem is this driver. I assume it is the modem. But I cannot find a 64 bit driver and doing the search online doesn't work. Any ideas?
BTW it is a k100 57061330 machine

Hi,
I´ve changed about 60 access points (1242/1231) from standalone-mode to controller-base – mode. We installed and configured three 5508 controllers with firmware-release AIR-CT5500-K9-7-0-98-0.aes. All of them have the same configuration.
We have different clients (Symbol, Dlog) with 802.1x LEAP and EAP-Fast Authentication in use. After authentication they connect to a web-based service that runs on a server on the campus.
After the change to controller-based we have the following problem:
When the clients wake up from sleep mode they authenticate correctly (Ping to the webserver is o.k.), but the login webpage can not be displayed (searching...). Then I`ve sniffered the uplink of the first controller to see what happend. I find out, that the DNS-Requests from the DNS-Server do not achieve the wlan-clients and so the client tries to make the DNS-request several times but without success. This problem occurs on all clients (handhelds, laptops...). To temporarily solve the problem I have to disable/enable the radio-interfaces of the clients.
Then I`ve changed the mode from local to HREAP on one AP and make a local break out at the AP and sniffered the uplink of the HREAP- AP. I´ve repeated the tests serveral times and with HREAP everything is working correctly. The clients get the DNS answer packets and the page is displayed immediately.
So why does the controller block the DNS-Requests after sleep-mode and reauthenticate of the clients ? With release AIR-CT5500-K9-6-0-196-0.aes the same problem occurs.
Thanks
Greeting FloHi Flo,
I'd agree that the two client connections seem to be treated differently between the 4404 and the 5508.
From the 5508 debugs, the lines that got my attention are the following:
*Oct 07 11:36:21.304: 00:15:70:34:2a:b8 Orphan Packet from DS - IP 172.17.172.101
*Oct 07 11:36:22.742: 00:15:70:34:2a:b8 Installing Orphan Pkt IP address 172.17.172.101 for station
*Oct 07 11:36:22.742: 00:15:70:34:2a:b8 Assigning Address 172.17.172.101 to mobile
These seem to be the combination of two known defects.
1. CSCsq46427
http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCsq46427
Even if the symptoms are exactly the same as your case, this should be fixed in 7.0.98.0, until the next one was found.
2. CSCti83830
http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCti83830
This second one should basically be a regression of CSCsq46427, specific for 5508 platforms.
To confirm whether you may be hitting such a situation, you could test one of the following options:
a) Apply the same workaround as for CSCsq46427.
b) Enable passive client support (only on 7.0):
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/7.0/configuration/guide/c70wlan.html#wp1391015
Should all of this still not be enough, I would then recommend to open a TAC case if more advanced troubleshooting is needed:
http://tools.cisco.com/ServiceRequestTool/create/

Fede

USB Host controller missing in device manager
Hello,
I've installed WIN 7 64 bit on my laptop; everything worked fine at the beginning; but after a couple of days, after a system update, all of the 4 USB ports stop working
In device manager there is no USB Host controller entry, and I have four device named "Multifunction device" marked in error
Already tried without success:
- update device driver autosearch online
- uninstall device and reboot; the system can't find proper drivers
- reinstall all drivers from HP driver update utility
- reinstall drivers with Intel driver update utility
- reinstall windows (no reformat)
- other driver search utilities
I can rule out an hardware problem because if I boot from CDROM or even usb keys, they work properly; given this fact, if I reformat the disk probably I could fix the problem I guess, but I prefer avoid this extreme solution, I use this laptop for my job and I have lot of customer network and VPN configured.
ThanksAfter following the Apple instructions on how to install Boot Camp on my MacBook, I had similar problems. I received the following non-functional driver list:
Bluetooth USB Host Controller
Coprocessor
Ethernet Controller
Network Controller
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
I tried running the repair feature from the OSX disc, no help. It may be noteworthy that I installed XP Professional SP3 straight off of an install disc, and did not do the following:
Install SP2
Install Boot Camp 2.1
Update to SP3
I am currently downloading Boot Camp 2.1 and hope that it will solve this problem. If anyone can help, please let me know!
