ICC Camera Profiles?????

Why does Lightroom not support ICC camera Profiles? How can we preach "complete color management" when we don't START color managed? I realize you can calibrate your camera, which builds a crude profile of sorts, which is a great shortcut for many people who do not want to go to the extent of creating actual camera profiles. But why does it not support full blown ICC camera profiles?
I have built my own profiles using the Gretag MacBeth system that are gorgeous. But the only raw file converter I find that utilizes them is Capture One.
Can this be built into an update??

Nicholas, I won't totally argue with you. But I can tell you that in daily practical application, after making an accurate white balance adjustment, one profile DOES make a huge difference. I preach not just from a theoretical standpoint (which certainly IS argueable), but from a serious useage standpoint. I shoot about 750 portrait images a day (www.boxseniors.com is one of our websites). Our "look" which is in demand enough to keep us booked up to 10 weeks in advance, is a very saturated, rich and warm (skin tone range) manipulation of a "true and accurate" profile.
I have spent a great deal of time achieving this look and it makes me a great deal of money. I am not in the commercial "reproduce it exactly right" business. And I am frustrated that Adobe chose not to impliment a starting point to an otherwise complete color managed system. I work in a set color space. I have a profiled monitor. I create my own printer profiles. Everything is managed EXCEPT the input with Lightroom.

    No and No. The ACR/LR engineers are philosophically opposed to using icc profiles to calibrate cameras unfortunately. I understand their reasoning more or less but it does leave us with fewer options. If you want to calibrate your camera in ACR/LR, you can use Thomas Fors' or Rags Gardner's scripts:

  • Disappearing ICC Printer Profiles

    I recently switched to Mac Pro with the OSX (5.7) operating system.  I also have gone from the PC version of Photoshop CS3 to Mac version of CS4.  I had ICC printer profiles for my Epson 4000 printer, which I believe were correctly installed into the Mac, but they have disappeared from my Photoshop printer dialog box.  I have run the Colorsync Utility and it find profiles, some of which apparently show "Tag Size is not correct"  When I run the utility to find the profiles, none of these profiles are listed.  Interestingly, the Epson 4000 profiles do show in the printer module for the Lightroom 2 application.  Any suggestions on how I can find and use the Epson 4000 printer ICC profiles?

    Ramon, thank you for your comments.  The profiles which have disappeared from the Photoshop CS4 printer dialog box are the ones from Epson which purport to match the printer (Pro 4000), Epson paper, and Epson Ink relative to color.  On my PC these profiles were generally good, though not perfect.  They are not custom profiles produced for my system.  I believe they originally came as part of the driver installation.  (I have reinstalled the Pro 4000 printer driver that came with the printer, and an updated driver from the Epson website, but this has not solved the problem.)  The interesting thing is that Lightroom 2 finds the Epson profiles, so I would think that would indicate that the profiles are still somewhere in the computer.  I have explored with the Finder and have used the Colorsync utility.  The profiles are not in the usual places I would expect (subfiles dealing with profiles generally), but by using the Colorsync utility, I have found a folder which may contain the profiles, but I can't figure out how to open it (what application?).  The folder I believe is as follows: /Library/Epson/inkjetprinter/printingmodule/Pro4000_core.plugincontent/Resources/ICC Profiles.  In any event, since Lightroom 2 application can find it there, I assume the problem may be the pointers in Photoshop CS4.  In any event, it is a problem when printing to the Epson Pro 4000.  Since the printer is several years old now, it is difficult to find any of the Epson profiles still available. It is also interesting to note (and this may be relevant) that the Colorsync Utility does not find any of these profiles, except that it finds a list of problem files which may represent one of the profiles and indicates that the reason it is a problem file is that the "Tag Size is not Correct".

  • Apply DNG Camera Profile to scan?

    I am setting up a workflow to scan and process a large volume of slides.  I am scanning with a Nikon LS5000 and Vuescan, outputting as (linear)DNG and then processing in Lightroom.
    For me this is efficient as it unifies my digital and analogue workflows.  I could also just output a raw tiff (not color corrected), but I like the smaller file size and the embedding of LR settings with DNG.
    I have done test scans for which I then created a custom color correction profile in the DNG profile editor.  I am very happy with the level of control over color in the profile editor, and would like to use this to apply color correction to batches of scans shot on a particular film type (kodachrome for example).  I know these tools are designed to be used with camera raw, but they perform equally well with linear files.
    The problem is that as the dng file was not created by a camera, but a scanner (even though the EXIF data shows the LS5000 as 'camera') I can not get the profile to show up in the Camera Calibration/Profile tab in order to apply it to an image.
    Questions:
    1- Is there any way to force the profile to load anyway? (LR could have an 'other' option in the profile tab)
    2- Can I get LR/Profile Editor to consider the LS5000 as a legitimate camera, as opposed to just producing a generic tiff?
    3- Can I somehow manually embed my custom profile into a DNG so that the embedded profile is automatically the right one?

    I am aware of the issue with the Nef files, as I found out that they are different from Nef camera files and not read by the DNG converter, or anything other than nikon scan.
    There are options though in vuescan with any scanner that allow you to disable all adjustments and export as a 'raw' file, either in tiff or dng format.  Vuescan is then primarily used to control the hardware.  The only processing that is applied to the scan is the calibration (correcting for variations in intensity in the ccd), and optionally IR-dust removal.  The important part is that there is no base curve, gamma, and no color adjustment or icc-profile applied.  For practical purposes LR could treat it as raw.
    As a hamburger it would be very rare and decidedly pink on the inside.  The main 'cooking' should ideally be happening in LR by applying the base curve and color adjustments in one action (camera profile + adjustments) as opposed to in two stages (scanner software followed by PS/LR).  My objective is to minimize the 'destructive' scanner software step, as I only want to scan once.

    I´m reviewing captures from the Leica S2, which is saving Raw in the DNG format after capture. There is only one camera profile in the DNG files ("embedded"). Compared to a JPEG (mode DNG+JPG for capture) of the same shot the color rendering with the embedded profile is more saturated and slightly shifted in the hues. Greens get an ugly plastic look.
    I have captures with Leica M8, too. They have more camera profiles: Embedded, Adobe Standard, Camera Standard and ACR legacy (3.6, 4.4).
    As I understand Leica M8 DNGs are supported by Adobe with camera specific camera profiles while Leica S2 DNGs are NOT supported by Adobe with specific camera profiles.
    Please can someone clarify this?
    Second question: Is the Leica S2 embedded profile a camera specific profile (from Leica) or a general camera profile? Who is in charge for the embedded profile?

    I´ve got shots from two S2 cameras and they are pre-production (in terms of firmware, Leica will update this).
    I process them with ACR 5.6 / LR 2.6.
    As far as I understand "embedded" means color rendering as supposed by the camera maker (in this case Leica) and "Adobe Standard" does mean an official camera profile from Adobe. "Embedded" is pretty close to the color rendering of the S2´s JPEGs.
    By the way, Capture One does open the DNG with a "DNG File Neutral" ICC profile. The color rendering is quite different. I know there is no DNG camera profile support in other applications than ACR/LR.

    I'm guessing it's a fairly simple question, so please bear with me as I'm working my way round trying to understand the DNG format:
    After the de-bayering step, are DNG camera profiles pure 3-channel mathematical curves? I know Adobe DNG editor allows for adjustments from the Color-checker patches & there's some hue sliders etc, but do these build into RGB curves, or is it some kind of additional mild LUT (or something else) applied over the top?

    Why does Lightroom 5 show "embedded" as an option for camera profile for .dng files created by my pentax k-30?  I thought that "embedded" profiles did not apply to .dng files?

    A JPG can contain color profile data not just a reference tag containing the name, although other Google results indicate that the APP2 segment is only has 65533 bytes of data and if the profile is too large for that then it is either chunked somehow or written into an XMP segment:

    Well, that's not much info.
    Have you rebooted both the Mac and the printer after the installation?  Which printer make and model?  What exact version of the OS?
    Are you sure they are in fact printer profiles?  The printer driver expects true printer profiles specific to your combination of ink, paper and ink.  Otherwise they won't show up in your list.
    Where exactly did you obtain the profiles from.  Do they have the proper extension?
    Etc.

  • How/when are Camera Profiles applied?

    I am trying to understand Camera Profiles and how they fit into the RAW conversion process.
    Are Camera Profiles applied to the RAW data prior to demosaicing or to the initial RGB values after demosaicing?
    In either case, it seems that the ultimate results which one gets with a specific camera and profile are going to
    potentially differ based on the software that is eventually used for the demosaicing.  Is this correct or am I totally
    missing something basic here?
    Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

    I had to put it more precisely,  it takes also a specific process to make ICC/ICM camera profile that will work w/ the specific raw converter... I did not mean that it will be exactly the same process as for DNG as you will be using different software at least...

  • How to make an untwisted camera profile available in LR 4.4?

    I have downloaded dcpTool from http://dcptool.sourceforge.net and generated the untwisted versions of all the Nikon D700 related camera profiles (Adobe Standard, Camera Standard, etc.) that come with LR 4.4. Since the structure of the camera profile filenames seem to be important, for each file I kept the original name but added a distinction to its end (e.g. Nikon D700 Camera Standard UT.dcp).
    According to the information I have collected, 'installation' of these profile versions would be as easy as copying them into the same directories where the original profiles are. Unfortunately LR 4.4 does not bring them up in the Camera Calibration module.
    How should I 'install' these profiles?

    I changed to LR recently. So far I have used only the Adobe Standard profile, but I am not very pleased with it. A few days ago I started fiddling with other D700 profiles, without any convincing color rendering improvement. This is the reason for entering the camera profiling world.
    As my username reflects, I am a hobbyshooter. Most of my pictures are taken when travelling (landscapes and cityscapes) but I also shoot at family events and parties.
    You have made me even more curious about the ColorChacker based profiles. I hope they will solve my main problems: skin color, the vivid reds of Nikon, and the formerly mentioned hue twist. Nevertheless, I am afraid that finding the right color rendering balance for my typical environments (particularly for indors with totally mixed lighting) will not be easy...
    I am also thinking of reprocessing roughly two thousand pictures, taken years ago with D200 and D300. Do you have any suggestion how to get nice 'generic' profiles for the given camera+lens combos, which I do not have these days, so creating their profiles with ColorChecker is out of the question for me?

  • How do you use an outside Lab ICC Printer Profile in PSE 12?

    I have an image that I scanned in from an old print then I edited it using PSE-12. Now that I've completed the editing and retouching I plan to have the image printed by an outside that has the ability to read ICC Printer Profiles designed for their printers embedded in the image. My proble is I don't know how to add a particular ICC Printer Profile to a image worked on in PSE-12. If I was using Lightroom or PS-CS5 or 6 there is a straight forward way to accomplish this goal.
    Is there any way to accomplish the same objective when using PSE-12?

    Thanks MichelBParis.  I must be getting old (I'm 78) and I completely missed that when I was in Dry Creek Photo. In fact that is where I get all of my ICC Printer Profiles from when I'm using either Lightroom or Photoshop CS. What I'm doing is tutoring a friend on the use of PSE-12 (although I do own a copy for my own use) and I was trying to set him up to use ICC Printer Profiles and avoid letting the labs do "Automatic Color Adjust). I had many images ruined in the past just because the lab did an automatic color adjust until an operator schooled me on what was happening. I'm now a part time photographer and I never send an image to be printed without first making sure I have an applicable ICC Printer Profile embedded. and request the lab to turn off their automatic color adjustment.

    I have recently installed the new camera profile 'Studio Portrait' which i download from here:

    Or is photoshop reading the raw file and only seeing the default camera profiles?
    If I could see the new camera profile listed it would help with work flow.

    Apply a camera profile
    To apply a camera profile, select it from the Camera Profile pop-up menu in the Camera Calibration tab of the Camera Raw dialog box. The Adobe Standard profile for a camera is named Adobe Standard. Camera Matching profiles include the prefix Camera in the profile name. The Camera Profile pop-up menu displays only profiles for your camera.
    If the only profile in the Camera Profilemenu is Embedded, it means that you have selected a TIFF or JPEG image. Adobe Standard and Camera Matching profiles work only with raw images.
    Note:  If you have selected a raw file and Adobe Standardand Camera Matching profiles do not appear in the Camera Profilepop-up menu, download the latest Camera Raw update.

    I recently purchased a ColorChecker Passport and along with the software, created a camera profile for my Olympus E-300. The CCP software crated a camera profile that was duly placed into the c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\adobe\cameraraw\cameraprofile\olumpus e-300 Directory. When I open an olympus ORF raw file from cs2 or bridge, and select the calibrate tab the only thing that is available in the camera calibrate box is ACR 2.4. Clicking the drop down arrow doesn't show anything else.
    I have turned off colormanagement in photoshop.
    Can anybody tell me how I can get photo shop to recognize the new camera profile?
    I have tried restarting photoshop and Bridge after the DCp file was added to teh directory.

    I have also performed the same tasks on photoshop cs3 on my work computer with the same results.

    The earliest version of Camera Raw to use DNG Profiles was version 4.6 in Photoshop CS3...so, you won't be able to use that DNG profile in ACR 3.7.

    I've calibrated two monitors for the machine running Mavericks OS X. I've managed to move these custom icc color profiles to ColorSync folder in HDD Library, so that that they are available for all the users. However, I cannot figure out how to make these icc profiles work as default profiles for all users and not only the one I used to calibrate monitors.
    Is there a specific place I have to put custom icc profile to make it system default?

    If you put the profiles in the root /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ folder, then each user needs to select them in their account. There isn't a way to apply them globally so each account automatically comes up that way.
