Ichat 3.1 issue

I have experienced two main issues with ichat 3.1.
1) variable behaviour in the transmit data rates when ichat is loaded with or without 100 kbps bandwidth restriction. As an example I opened ichat without 100 kbps restriction. Tx rate was 750 kbps. I enabled the 100 kbps restriction and the Tx rate was 55 kbps. Quit ichat. Reload so that 100 kbps restriction is already enabled. With restriction Tx rate was 80 kbps and then turn off restriction and Tx rate is 400 kbps. In all cases I transmitted a video clip over ichat and so the video source was constant. I have no explanation for this variability between loading with or without 100 kbps restriction.
2) I was trying to test the effect of badwidth restriction on the performance of H.264 using ichat. I used Throttled to restrict the flow of data. However once this was done ichat refused the connection, even if the data rate of the new port is see obscenely high.
If anyone has any ideas pleas help?
Thanks

HI m42,
The iChat Bandwiddth Limit does what it says - it reduces the Bandwidth that iChat uses.
iChat uses about 80% of the available bandwidth when capped or the connectoion speed is below about 384k. Between this and 500k there seems to be some increase in the picture quality. After 500k there is little visible difference.
This does of course also vary depending who you are connected to and their speeds.
Changing the limit during a chat is likely to drop it further to allow for margin then starting it preset.
It is silly to cap IChat like this. Set the setting to NONE.

  • IChat video connection issue, not related to router

I received a brand new 20" iMac Core 2 Duo just yesterday and intended to use iChat AV to video conference with my girlfriend, who has a 12" iBook G4 1.2GHz with an iSight and all system software up-to-date.
We both have DSL connections at home. We also both have wireless routers. The very first time we tried a video conference, it worked perfectly without a hiccup and everything just looked and sounded wonderful. At the time, she was connected wirelessly and I was connected both wirelessly and through Ethernet to my router's local network.
The second time we tried it (only a few hours later), seemingly without having changed any settings, it failed to work, and hasn't worked since. At first, we would get Error -22, saying something about how bandwidth is insufficient to maintain a video conference. However, I do not believe bandwidth is the real issue since all other network/internet tasks on both ends are spiffy as usual. We also both tried turning off Airport and just connecting through Ethernet to our routers' local network. Same problem.
To then determine if the problem was with one our routers, we both set them aside and plugged our DSL modems directly into our computers and connected to the internet with PPPoE. This appears to partially fix the problem: we are able to initiate a video conference, we both have audio, I can see her, but she can't see me; sort of a one-sided conference. On my screen, the image of myself freezes as soon as the conference is initiated. So unless I'm missing something, the ultimate cause of this problem doesn't appear to be the routers.
You can bet I tried a bunch of the common tips mentioned in this discussion forum before posting this question, such as changing the iChat port in the preferences, turning off Firewalls in the Sharing preferences and changing Quicktime streaming speed.
In summary, it worked once and hasn't worked since, and routers do not appear to be the cause of the issue. Does anyone have any further advice for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

First off I want to thank James for his willingness to help me test connections today. James has suggested I check into upping my Mother's connection. I will definitely look into that.
I wanted to update the thread that I tried the three test accounts at Apple (appleu3test01-3) and had success from all three on my home computer via my wireless configuration no less. This is what stumps me about my connection issues with my Mother - we can both connect to others but between us we get error -8's since iChat 3. I also find it odd that this is happening even though we are both Earthlink customers - I would chalk it up to routing tables or something if we were on different ISP's.

I can't log into by iChat. I've gone into settings and made sure the password is correct. But I keep getting prompted to enter a password and it kicks me out. Used to work just fine, but about a month ago it started with this issue.i

    HI,
It would be useful to know the iChat version and the type of Account (Screen Name or ID) you are using.
For Instance an @mac.com name will work as a AIM valid Screen Name.
Depending on which iChat version you will determine which items are in the Add Account drop down (with ichat 6 there is only AIM and you have to enter the name in full).
@me.com and @icloud.com ending Apple IDs are also valid Names but you have to using iChat 6 (or Messages in Mountain Lion) to Login due to extra security Apple uses on those IDs.
They will not work in iChat 5 or earlier.
If you have changed the password at Apple recently and gone over their 16 character limit AIM has you also will not be able to Login.
If you have an AIM name or an @mac.com name then try signing in  here.
This may tell you if your account has been suspended.
Staying with AIM there can be issues with an SSL login sometimes.
Manually change the "Enable this Account" and then tick the box again.
If you were suddenly dropped by the server the .plist involved may have a different state to what the server thinks (it says you're Logged in when the server says your not) At this point it will tend to think you are not you and refuse the login.
There can be similar issues with Jabber (Google) logins.

  • 10.5.1 Update doesn't fix iChat/Photobooth video issues.

I didn't really think it would since there were a lot of lower level OS items to repair before working on particular hardware issues.
That being said, I'd like to make it clear that video is broken for iChat and Photobooth on my MacBook Pro. I get a black screen whenever I try to use the built-in iSight camera.
If I fire up Skype, the video works fine as it uses a different method to grab the camera image.
So for Apple folks perusing the forum, please add this to the list of issues. Thanks.

    You're welcome, steve.
The difference between Software Update and standalone is explained here. The article also explains recovering from possible installation process interruptions, which can be the cause of some strange problems.
Be sure to repair permissions after the update. The 10.5.1 update installer left many permissions needing repair on my PPC Mac.
If the standalone installer does not help you, consider Possible hardware or software conflicts.
Once you eliminate potential conflicts, and if you have problems only with the two apps, those two apps may have been damaged somehow. Perhaps reinstalling the two apps will correct your problem?

  • Strange iChat AV router issue

    Hello all,
I'm hoping someone can shed light on the situation I'm having with iChat AV attempting to vidoeconference with Apple's test servers (appleu3test01, etc...) When attempting to videoconference to the test servers on a macbook pro (10.4.6) powerbook g4 1.5 (10.4.6) mac mini core solo (10.4.6) it does not function behind our router (Cisco 1841 IOS version 12.4 3v ). However it works fine when I attempt it using the same iSight camera and the same port on our swith that I test the powerbook and mac mini with on my old 600mhz G3 ibook (10.4.6). This is baffling me to no end and apple support has not been much help over the phone. For reference this problem existed before we enabled our firewall on the 1841 and continues to exist after we opened up all the requisite ports. The OS X firewalls on all the machines are disabled. A few other people on this board seem to have problems with other cisco equipment, does anyone have a solution? Thanks,
    -Brian
Cliffs: same network, all variables constant except machine
    Works: iBook g3 600mhz
Doesn't work: Powerbook G4, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini Core Solo
Edit: forgot the mention the error it gives is "Disconnected from video chat because: can't get video from the camera"

Here's the issue. VOIP as provided in our solution isn't handled through a separate box like vonage that i could just plug into the router rather than between the router an the modem. We have a T1 handled by the modem in a slot in the chassis of our Cisco 1841 router/firewall. The VOIP service is just a separate VLAN on the router. Also there were no configuration differences between the old ibook and any of the other machine's I've tried. It too was running 10.4.6, all current patches, etc... Our IP phones are Cisco 7960s which are on that separate VLAN.

  • Ichat dropping out issue with Broadband Tuner?

    All,
I posted before when I was having this issue and Ralph suggested that since I had a FIOS connection and OS 10.3 I limit my bandwith to 100 in video preferences. That fix works(thanks Ralph), although my image is not as crisp.
Now I have 10.5.2 and downloaded the Broadband Tuner. Still have issue with Ichat just breaking down (running connection doctor show audio and video dropping off). I was wondering if I maybe need to do something else besides just install the Tuner? It came up with a successful install, but it seems like it is doing nothing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Jon

    Hi Jon,
I see it says not for Airports at the bottom
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/broadbandtuner10.html
I don't know if this effect you.
I am not sure where to look on a Mac to find out if it is working or not.
I would recheck the Bandwidth option in iChat to see which works best for your try anything up to 500kbps.
Do you know if your Connection speed is varying greatly ?
This is the normal issue with FiOS.

  • 2 iChat 4.0 issues

I have two separate issues with iChat 4.0:
I am running 10.51 on an iMac Core Duo 2.0 GHz connected to the internet via wire through an AirPort Extreme n base station. I am also running a MacBook Core Duo 1.83 GHz connected to the internet via WiFi through the same AirPort Extreme n base station. Each computer has their own AIM account.
    Issue 1:
I am trying to video chat with a relative on a PC using the latest AIM software and a brand new Logitech ?8000? webcam. We are able to connect, but occasionally it seems to be a one way connection. My relative can see me, but I cannot see him. Any thoughts?
    Issue 2:
When I try to connect to AIM via iChat 4.0 on the MacBook, with a separate log in account than is on the iMac, it appears to connect. However, there are no buddies listed in the Buddy List. When I add a Buddy, it still does not appear on the list. If I manually try to send a message to someone, it tells me "Your privacy preferences are set so they prevent you from communicating with this person". When I check my privacy preferences, it is selected that I can connect to anyone. This account does not appear to be online, when I check on the separate iMac account. Additionally, I can log in to the other account on the MacBook and it works just fine.
Any help with either or both issues is much appreciated....
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Issue 1.
Video chatting to AIM has become increasingly difficult.
AIM 5.9 works if the person is On XP but does require some setting up.
Read both yellow boxes on this page http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page12.html
AIM 6.1 does work on XP but is no longer download-able
AIM 6.5 works according to some people but does say on the AIM site that it does not Video to iChat.
In All cases if the camera on the PC is disconnected the app needs to have the link to the Camera re-established.
In AIM 5.9 it is the whole "tuning" thing again (Short cut to the Instruction at message 570).
In AIM 6.1 and 6.5 it means selecting the camera in the Preferences for AIM and in the Enhanced IM tab.
In AIM 6.1 these are accessed by pressing F7 (I am not sure about what to press in AIM 6.5)
    Issue 2.
Check the iChat > Window menu
Does this list the Accounts and the keystrokes ?
In the iChat menu itself is the Preferences an option you can access ?
Also in this menu in the sub menu item Accounts can you see the accounts ?
If the Accounts do not show up and you can not see your iChat Preference or access them then Quit iChat.
Now open Activity Monitor from Applications/Utilities
search the List for IChatAgent as it does not quit when iChat does.
USe the Red QUit and Confirm Force QUit on iChatAgent.
Now go to USers/(your account)/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.ichat.plist
    com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and
    com.apple.ichatAgent.plist
    Restart iChat.
This will ask you to confirm your details in the Start Up Screens again.
You should now have your Buddy list and access to the places mentioned above.
Now go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security and set the List to Allow All
The to Block Certain people and check the Blocked List and make sure it has the "right" people in it.
Set it back to what you normally have it set at.

  • IChat 2.1 and iChat 3 compatibility issues?

I have a friend who is oversees that I am trying to voice chat and/or video chat with. We can text chat but when trying either voice or video we get connection errors.
What I'm curious about is I have iChat 3 and he has 2.1. Are there issues where we can't use the av features unless he upgrades? That would be a simple solution albeit a costly one for him.
    More Info:
In trying to rule out the cause of the issue we have tried skype and voice is great with that - we involved a third friend and she had the same issues with him and I had no problem using the voice chait with her and she is across the world as well. She happens to have iChat 3 so that is what was making me want to pose the compatibility question.
    TIA

    Hello Seth,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There is no problem connecting iChat AV 2.1 with iChat AV 3.0.1 provided both Macs are healthy and both ends of the connection meet the respective requirements of their iChat AV versions. I video with iChat AV 2.1 users almost every day.
Skype uses fewer and different ports than iChat AV, and Skype does not offer video, so it can be simpler to connect if you do not need iChat AV's additional features.
You have a good start on testing iChat AV, but both of you should test with several others to determine which end of the connection is causing the problem. At this point, it sounds like the problem
    b may
be at your Buddy's end, but I would suggest testing with more people to increase your certainty. If you do not have several buddies, you can find others willing to test in the Want to Test your iSight With Another Person? FAQ.
Other trouble shooting suggestions for Tiger users can be found in Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
Your iChat AV 2.1 buddy (and perhaps you, too,) may be interested in the suggestions in Using iSight with iChat AV. Even if he does not use iSight, he may find some helpful ideas there.
Once you identify the problem that is causing your symptom, you will likely find your answers in the iChat AV Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). If not, we will be happy to try to offer more specific suggestions once you can identify a more specific problem.

  • IOS 5.1 iChat & Face Time issue on iPad 2

After upgrading to iOS 5.1 the system ask me to sign in for sing Face Time and iChat. I entered several times my apple ID and password but I can't log in and the application takes me back to the log in page with no specific message.
I've check my Apple ID and password and they are correct (I even changed my password). Does anyone know how to solve it?
    Thanks in advance,

    UPDATE:
I had 27 Gigs free on the iPad, so it wasn't a memory issue, it was some Apple issue.
I took my iPad to work and tried connecting there through the wi-fi at the office, and it connected and uprgaded fine.
    So if you are reading this because your IOS can't download, try;
    1) use a Windows/PC machine, as it seems more reliable then macs for this download/upgrade
    or
    2) try different w-fi locations to have the device upgrade itself through its own Settings > General > Software Update

  • IChat Text Display Issue

Users who have specific colors on iChat are having their text reformatted to random colors on my ichat.  How do I correct this?

    Hi,
I got  a Lion computer this weekend just gone.
In  a Bonjour chat between two of my computers the IM stayed the colour I had set on the second computer  (Font is Black).
However when I use an AIM name to send an IM between the two I experience the same as you.
My default colour is a sort of mid Green with Arial Black as the Font and the colour of the text as Black.
The IM comes to iChat 6 as a light purple IM.
The same happens if I use the same two AIM Names in iChat 6.
In fact it gets slightly weird in that iChat 5 shows the "Right Colour"  (as sent from iChat 6)
iChat 5 to iChat 6 shows as this Purple, but the same account on the iChat 6 computers shows the replies as Blue IMs - whilst in turn sending from there still shows as purple in iChat 6 but the regular colour I use in iChat 5
I wondered if it was anything to do with the colours being the same so I changed the outgoing one on the ichat 6 computer with no change in the behaviour.
As you say the Reformatting setting makes no difference.
I can see that if like me you test between two computers that have the same iChat accounts on them that you might have some benefit from the colour being different.
I will try and test with a Buddy to see if a Different Account/Screen Name makes a difference.
However, from what you first reported about a Buddy's Colour it would seem it is new behaviour to iChat

  • Ichat Frame Rate issues, low FPS

    Hi,
My Father has a G5 1.8 iMac (20") w/ iSight and Tiger, connected to the internet via a cable modem. His upload and download speed are great. When he connects to me in iChat (or anyone else) he initially hooks up at about 15 fps+, but within 5-7 sec, drops to 1 fps, and stays there. He has been unable to get greater than 1 fps sending his video, which results in quite choppy video for anyone on the receiving end.
Any ideas on how he can get his frame rate to increase? I've run out of ideas.
    Thanks,
    Tyler

    Hi Tyler
What apps are running in the background, eg:Virex for one can take the frame rate down and is not compatible with 10.4 so uninstall it.
Also some widget's can cause frame rate loss so turn them all off to check.

  • IChat 4 Buddies issue

Lately when I add a Buddy, it'll flash on the iChat screen and then disapear, even though that person is online. I'll receive their messages and once I do I can chat with them, but I can't find them on my list, even as offline.
So far I've only added AIM contacts, so I can't say if they apply to .Mac as well.
Anyone else has this happen? Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Iggy

I've narrowed it down to an interaction problem with Leopard Apps. On my system the missing buddy is one that was previously entered into Address Book with a subtly different address. In this specific example the address was entered in Address Book as [email protected] The correct address was subsequently added to the buddy list in iChat as [email protected] The difference was in the capitalization.
iChat appears to cross reference the contact with Addressbook and chooses the incorrect version and it then disappears from the buddy list. Looking at the buddy list using AIM express web app shows that the correct version has been correctly added to the buddy list. iChat has got it's self confused by referencing to the wrong entry in AddressBook. Even deleting the incorrect AddressBook entry and redoing everything doesn't help as the wrong entry keeps coming back to AddressBook when the buddy is added to iChat.
There must be a cache somewhere that is keeping the wrong format address. Any ideas where it might be hiding? I feel confident that if I can delete that the missing buddy will reappear (might have to re add it).

  • ICHat name change issue

How do I change the iChat name, it's set as my email account (Yahoo) but is showing the wrong display name when displayed as "view as name"?

    Hi,
    From iChat to Address Book
    1) When Adding a Buddy in iChat you can enter First Name, Last Name details or expand the Pane with the blue arrow head at the right of the Last Name line and then chose an Existing Address Card.
    2) For adding details to an existing iChat Buddy highlight the Buddy in the iChat Buddy list.
Use the CMD and i keys together (like Get Info in the Finder's File Menu).  This brings up the Info card for that Buddy. You can then chose the Address Card Tab and Add any Missing detail your want.
Example of Screen Name only Buddy
This will then add the details to the Address Book
    From Address Book to iChat
If you have Contacts that you have Screen Names for already entered in the Address Book then you can Highlight them and Drag them to iChat's Buddy Lists (plural).
You can the regular modifier Keys (normally ALT and CMD) to Hold and click different Contacts to pick out just those you want to move.
Then drag the selected ones to iChat.  (if you pick and AIM Buddy list names will get Added there. You can also drag them to a Jabber Buddy list if you use one)
I Highlighted 5 people here and then started to Drag them.
This list is in fact a group I have within the Address Book that also relates to an iChat Group. I have edited out the names that may be traceable.
Obviously you can do them one at a time.

  • IChat video chat issues

iChat has been acting up recently. I have an iSight, the person I want to talk with has a Veo USB webcam. They are on a Windows XP computer using AIM 5.9, I am on a Mac OSX 10.4.5 using iChat 3.1.1. All my ports are forwarded, I have no firewall on, nor does he. Sometimes it will work. Once we got it to work so that I could see and hear him, and he could see and hear me. Lately though, it's been me seeing him, not hearing him, but he can see and hear me. Then it let me see him for a second, then it freezes, but he can see and hear me. I never have audio from the start from him. Somewhere in between there it will load to the point where I can see myself in the window but not him. Usually he can only see and hear me and I can't hear him, but once I could hear him. This is getting confusing and aggrivating. We both have the newest version of everything, and I have gone to every troubleshooter everywhere. What's up here?
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Michael,
IF you can connect, but his audio is missing there is a setting on his end that can sometimes help.
    Start a Chat.
You open the Connection Doctor from the iChat Video menu
He clicks on the rear of the two tabs where he sees your Video. This should be his preview.
When his preview is at the front there should be a small icon to the right.
If he clicks on that a slider will come up.
Sliding the slider to the left does in fact reduce the quality. (not that you can tell visually)
In the Connection Doctor you should see his bit rate and Framerate increase.
If there is enough adjustment of the Video quality the sound should kick in.
Adjust as required to achieve acceptable Video and Sound.
