IChat 3.11 I invite PC OK, PC invites, failure.

iChat video with windows pc. If I invite the PC, works fine, and connects immediately. Tried with 2 separate PC's.
If the PC initiates the chat, get failure message, DID NOT RESPOND, even though I accepted the invitation.
Question, is the problem on my side with the Mac, or is it on the Windows PC side?
Any solutions are appreciated.

Hi Robart,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
It could be both.
But as this works Outgoing it is more likely that something in your Firewall or modem settings is amiss.
iChat needs these ports open
5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403 just to use the AIM side and Audio or Video chat.
There are other for Bonjour (other mAcs on your net) and the Jabber side. See the table on this page and the pic on the top of this page for the Mac firewall.
These same ports have to be open in your modem and if you have UPnP use that.
As you have had chats with PCs it is unlikely they need to Tune the App to the Camera and Mic.
They may need to enable the app through the XP firewall though.
I wouls also make sure your System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming Tab > Streaming drop down is set to the download speed you get from your ISP.

  • Trying to get iChat one-way video invite to work.

My mother-in-law is in Florida and I would like to have a one-way video chat set up. I have iChat open and can see that she is online, but cannot invite because the 'invite one-way video chat' is grayed out. She has iChat with 10.4.3 something. Now when we had it open she had her AOL IM on also. I asked to close it and start all over (I closed iChat myself) and when we tried again she was still grayed out. Any suggestion would be great.

    Hi Gary
Did you high-light her first in the buddy list and then try to invite.

  • ICal event invitation failures due to missing/malformed email addresses

These problems, although slightly different, appear in both 10.5.8 and 10.6.1. I don't see in the release notes that this was addressed in 10.6.2, but I have not installed it yet.
In 10.5.8, sometimes when a user is invited through the iCal invitation, an email is (attempted) to send with no email address in the to field; it's completely blank, and the mail server rejects it with a bounce message. Below is an example of the bounce message:

OK, I've discovered the 10.6 issue is a bug in Kerio Mail Server 6.7.2 and is scheduled to be fixed with the release of 6.7.3.
    The 10.5 issue remains open.

  • IChat auto accepting audio/video invitations

When I'm logged into iChat and my camera and microphone are enabled, my iChat automatically accepts any invitation for an audio or video chat from users not on my local network. I can't find any information about this problem happening to anyone else, nor how to fix it. It's scary to know that people can start video chatting with me, and see me, without my knowledge or permission. Please help!!

  • No video or screen sharing on iChat 4 between identical MBP's and OS

Hi, like many others, i'm experiencing problems with audio/video calls and screen sharing on iChat 4.
It's really important since my dad lives abroad and is 80 years old, so i need to help him out by taking over control of his MacBookPro when he needs me to.
Here's our setup when it DID work:
We were both in my house, on my network, through my Airport Exreme. We're both running 2009 MacBook Pro's with OSX 10.5.8 on it, and were signed in to iChat through our google account (jabber).
Then he returned back to his home (i'm in Holland, he's in Austria), and since then we can only do text chats on iChat. Whenever we invite eachother for video chat or screen sharing, we get the same error message about a communication error, or telling us the other one 'didn't reply' or something like that. I'll copy-paste the exact message + error details the next time we try.
We tried to solve it by changing services, meaning i signed in through my @mac.com account and he signing in through his AIM account, but with no luck. Also AIM to AIM didn't help.
I'm still on my Airport Extreme, connected to a DSL modem which is branded by my provider, so no idea what it is.
He is on a Speedtouch ST585 wireless DSL router, which he also got from his provider.
Any settings we should check/change? i've read all sorts of stuff about port forwarding, SIP/NAT compatibility and UPNP but that all works rather confusing than clarifying..
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lexxy

    HI,
Thomson-Alcatel, to give them their Full name, make the Speedtouch Series of Modems
As a Brand they will work with each other no matter if they are a Cable (non routing) modem or a Speedtouch DSL Modem.
So, 2 to 3 (or 3 to 2) will work as they are Alcatels
The computer 1 and computer 2 situation (with said modems) has about a 1 in 5 chance of working based on my personal knowledge of Version 4.3.5 firmware and mush less with later firmware from threads on this board.
The Airport Express does or can do something called Port Mapping Protocol.
It is turned On in the Airport Admin Utility > Internet pane > NAT tab
In some circumstances this can be an issue. (It open ports like UPnP does but in a different way) - IF - the Express in not in Bridge (Off) Mode.
Is the DSL modem you have Routes then the Express should be set to Bridge (Off) Mode so that there is only one DHCP server on your LAN (unless you set the devices to do Static routing)
You could try it without the Express, but I am sure you will get the same results.
Can your Dad reach any of the names in Table 1 http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/ContactTesters.html ?
(He adds them to his Buddy list and tries Video chats (they Auto Answer) )
There maybe a conflict between the two lots of NAT at your end if the modem and Express are doing DHCP (Share An IP) and your Dad's Alcatel.
It may still be there if it is your modem only and his.
My Personal experience with an Thomson-Alcatel Speedtouch Modem, answering on these boards and doing regular testing with people and work Bosie on this forum which Defcom and I have been involved with - tells me it is the Speedtouch that is the problem.

  • Invite to video chat, invitation received, responded to, but can't connect

I invite a friend to video phone on iChat, she accepts the invitation, but then we can't chat. If I invite her, she clicks Accept, then on her end it says that she failed to respond and on my end it just keeps waiting endlessly. If she invites, me, I click Accept and on her end it says that I failed to respond and on my end it just keeps waiting endlessly. Friend has a Mac also, not sure which one but just purchased in late 2005 so quite new, running OS 10.4.4.
I have a Mac Mini. Just updated to OS 10.4.4 today, 1/28/06, which at least seemed to take care of my previous issue! (iChat was quitting just after startup, every time I opened it).
I found Ralph's post to another user with a similar issue from earlier today, and will go ahead and answer the questions as they apply to my situation.:
    +Ralph wrote: ++
It may not be a bandwidth issue but it may be a port setting somewhere.
    So, What modem ?
    -->Cable modem: Cisco 575 LRE
What ports if any have you enabled ?
-->internal modem, built-in ethernet, and built-in firewire. These ports are checked, and appear, in this order. I don't have Airport (haven't downloaded it) or Bluetooth at all since I don't have wireless internet.
Have you got the Mac Firewall On ?
-->No, nothing checked under Firewall at all.
Have you set ports for iChat as there is no Preset ?
-->Do not know how to do this.
Have you changed the Quicktime Streaming Speed to match your Download ?
--> I believe so. I did the test and the speed varied between 550 and 890, so I changed Quicktime streaming speed to 512. We both restarted our computers and tried again but problem was still there.
What is the setting you have in iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down (It should be NONE) ?
--> It is NONE and has always been.
Are either of you using any iChat Add-ons ?This will effect the Intel end as they will not work in Universal and iChat will need to be run in Rosetta.
--> I don't know what these would be so I assume I am not using them. In any case we are both using Macs.
This is the latest in a long saga of iChat problems so any help is greatly appreciated!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Ok,
This is for the Mac Firewall.
Go to System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab.
In the list of items (services and apps) - hover the mouse over any item.
This will bring up a little yellow dialogue box which will list the ports that could be opened if that item is selected.
The ports are just a means of seperating that diiferent data out that happens to go in an out of your computer to other places (internet or computers) or to devices such as printers and scanners.
Web browsing in always on port 80
Mail can be on port 110, 443 and some others specified by the mail servers such as Googlemail which insists you set up ports 578.
You will find there is a preset for iChat Bonjour with ports 5297 and 5298 set up. However it is a hold over from Panter and lists the protocol as TCP.
This a show an see info post to this point.
If you run your Mac with the Firewall On then you will need to make a setting for icaht AV as there is no preset.
This is where the Apge 4 link, instructions and pic comes in.
    Use the New Button
Select Other from the top drop down.
    Type 5190, 5298, 5220, 5222, 5223 in the TCP line
    Type 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5678, 16384-16403 in the UDP line
Enter a name for this entry in the Description line
    Hit the OK button.
    Now read page 3
This resates the ports needed and the jobs they do for iChat.
These ports (openings in the modem) need to be enabled in the modem.
It can be done in three ways (depending on the functions of your modem)
UPnP is and On/Off settings that lets the App control when the ports are open and which ports it needs. It allows multiple computers to use those ports at the same time
Port Triggering is a form of Network Address Translation (NAT) that set a single port as the trigger for more ports to be open if data arrives on that port.
This also allows multiple computers to use the ports.
Port Forwarding is the oldest form of opening the ports.
It specifies which IP address the data will be sent to and therefore only allows one cmputer to use the ports.
(DMZ is an extreme form of this that opens all the ports to 0ne device).
http://portforward.com/routers.htm This site is a good place to find out the Default IP addres of the modem and the Default USer ID and Passwords it may have. (It also porvides instructions and Pics on how to do Port Forwarding based on the application.
See if your modem is listsed.
Click on it and choose iChat from the next page list.
Study the pics to see if you can see where the UPnP items is if your modem has it. (it may not be in sight)
Use the default info to access your modem and look around. They will work like web pages.
If you have UPnP enable it.
If not post back with your Progress
    Ralph

  • Can't get video iChat to work at all

I have never been able to get the video going with another person. My built-in web cam works just fine on Yahoo!Messenger, but I can't get it started on iChat/AIM. The "invite to video chat" is not highlighted even though my buddy has his camera on and it works. There's no camera icon next to his name.
What am I not doing/doing wrong? The text chat works great.

For the No Sound issue try Repairing Permissions.
Also run the Cron scripts Cocktail or MacJanitor will do this. (it is in fact all MacJanitor does and it is Free)
This may help sort the camera issue.

I can still use G-Talk and see my parents is online.
But when we tried to Video chat, my modem go crazy, and lose internet connection.
    My modem is Speedstream 5100.
Internet Provide is: AT&T Yahoo, DSL.
I recently installed Router, but it was working fine for few weeks. So I have no idea what happened! Help!
    Thank you

SIP is the Text based Protocol iChat uses to establish a A/V chat.
What happens is your iChat Send a Visible Invite on port 5678 (Irrespective of iChat Version).
It then contacts the SNATMAP server run by Apple for iChat. This acts like an old fashioned telephone exchange with an Operator.
Your iChat tell the server which Buddy and which IP it sent the Visible Invite to.
It also tells the server which ports your end is wanting to use.
The Buddy's end does the same thing when they Accept.
The server does the bit a bit like an operator in contacting the other end and asking if the call will be accepted and so forth.
What sometimes happens with iChat 3 is that it gets blocked because the ISP suddenly starts to offer a VoIP service. VoIP uses SIP as well so they block the SIP ports (5060-5063) looking for people to pay extra fro ports that used to be open.
Talking to the ISP and saying they are blocking an App that was working often gets them to reopen eh ports again without incurring charges.
Adding a VoIP device like a Vonage Adpter to the set up can cause similar problems if it is placed In-line between computer and modem.
Placing it on a Ethernet port of a router normally sorts this.

    Binary Images Description for "iChat":
Indicates that the port 5060 is not open.
Where it is not open is itself an open question.
It could be All the ichat ports if the Firewall on the Mac is ON but the ports are not set.
iChat send a visual invite on port 5678 which you Buddy Clicks on.
The Process then moves to port 5060 where iChat contacts a Server Called SNATMAP run by Apple that does the SIP link part.
Your iChat contacts this server and tells it what ports you want ichat to use.
The Server finds the Buddy over SIP and tells them which ports and Bingo you are connected.
Now if Your iChat can see the SIP server then you get more details than you have.
As you don't have this detail it can mean the modem or router does not have the ports open.
It can also mean that you have a piece of VoIP equipment like a Vonage adapter that is stripping all the SIP data
It can also mean your ISP offers a VoIP service and wants to charge more for port 5060 to be open.
(VoIP uses SIP as well - Apple have said iChat is a VoIP app)
Most ISP seem to be persuadable that they should unblock port 5060 free of charge as it is effecting your app or that they have changed the conditions of the service without telling you.
Knowing more about your LAN, Make and model of all devices in the link and how they are set up for DHCP and ports would be helpful.

  • IChat Wake Mac from Sleep

I have just started using iChat, and frequently missing invites becouse my iBook has fallen asleep. How can i have iChat wake the computer and play an Alert whenever i am invited to a text chat, audio chat and video chat?
Thanks for any help on this.
    Steve
    iBook G3 900
    iMac G5 20"
    PowerMac G5 Duel 1.8

How can i have iChat wake the computer ...You cannot. As a security measure, your Mac disconnects from the internet when it sleeps.
If you want to stay on line, set your display sleep for the desired time, but set you System Preferences... > Energy Saver > Sleep options to "Never" for the computer.
Also check the "Options" and "Schedule" settings to be sure you do not leave unexpected actions enabled.
Set iChat > Preferences... > Alerts for the default actions you desire for your entire buddy list. You can also set individual alerts for some buddies by setting iChat > Buddies > Get Info > Show: "Actions" choices bar "Events" for each buddy that you want to treat in a special way.

  • AV iChat ---does not respond message

I've been reading about iChat problems and see a lot of frustrated people out there and have joined the ranks.
My mother and I successfully AV iChatted Friday night.
My daughter and I AV iChatted Sunday (she could invite me, i couldn't invite her)
My daughter was able to AV iChat with her grandmother Sunday too. But I could not. We could however audio chat.
A week later I cannot audio OR video chat with my mother.
We are getting the "(fill in name of invitor) did not respond" message.
I have opened the ports in my Mac Firewall, and my mother did too--no luck.
I tried to set a static ip address for my computer but cannot because my isp has dynamic DNS and I'm not allowed to according to them.
    Am I frustrated? You bet!
I've Mac OS X (10.4.5) on dual processor intel iMac. I connect to the web via Motorola Surfboard S84220 Cable Modem and Netgear 54 Mbps wireless router WGR614v6. My mother is on System: Mac OSX  version 10.4.5
Power Book G4 and is connected thru Surfboard Motorola Model  SB 5100.
Oh--should I say, I am on .Mac and my mother is AIM?
My husband is beginning to worry about me because I have been glued to my computer--he says there are programs out there to help people like me get over my addiction--i hope so.

Well thanks for your time and input. After playing around with everything for another while, I finally called Apple Care. I figured since I payed for it, I should use it.
They first suggested that my problem lay with the strength of my internet connection. I turned my airport off and hooked up to the internet directly with the cable. When that did not help, we tried one more thing.
It turns out that I had to reset my modem. I unplugged it for 2 minutes--including its cable connection, and then turned everything back on as well as restarting my computer. Voila! it worked.
I have since reconnected my airport and am now operating wirelessly, and iChat is happy again.
Since I am not a technical person, i am probably going to garble this, but it seems that the modem was issuing crumby ip addresses to my computer (?)
Maybe you can make sense of this.
After all of this, it seems like such a simple fix. Maybe you who are experiencing the "did not respond" message can start here before you go to too much trouble setting ports and such.
We'll see if this still works tomorrow.
    Good luck!

  • Can't Video Chat or Screen Share with iMessages to iChat?

So I just recently got a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion to replace my white MacBook running Snow Leopard. I noticed iChat has been replaced by iMessages. All of my other Mac friends still use iChat. I didn't think this would be a huge difference, but I can no longer video chat or screen share with them.
I send them an invite, and they get an IM saying "[account] has sent you a video chat request". I'm registered under my AIM account, and so are they, so that's not the problem. When they send me invites, nothing happens. I get no notification, and it just shows "Waiting for response from [account]."
    So I thought "okay, I'll just re-download iChat from a third-party site".
The download link just takes me directly to Apple's page about Mountain Lion. So that's out.
There's no option in my security on iMessages to override this issue and allow unknown developers. I have "Allow AOL's servers to relay video chats" option selected under Privacy, and that does nothing, either.
What's the deal? Can I no longer video chat (or screen share) with "third party" chat clients via iMessages anymore?

    Hi,
I have tested my Messages (Ver 7.0.1 in OS X 10.8.2) to various versions of iChat (3, 4 and 5)
iChat 3 can send invites and open Video (Or Audio Only) chats to Messages.
The iChat 4 and 5 can Video Chat To and From Messages. (I was using AIM as I have more accounts I can play with)
I have even done 3 way Video chats in both Bonjour and AIM login using Messages and iChat 4 and 5.
I have just double checked between Messages and iChat 4 Offering the Messages Screen to the G4 (iChat 4) and I was successful.
Screen Sharing requires a Random port for the VNC connection that does the "picture" bit.
However if you had it working in iChat then this should still be working in the Messages set up.  (Basically your router is doing UPnP or is an Apple Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol)
Also iChat will not work in Mountain Lion (even if you grab the iChat 6 version)
Each version is very specific to the OS version it is with.
For instance during OS X 10.4 it got to OS X 10.4.11 but during those same increases iChat got to  version 3.1.9
There was no update to Messages until OS X 10.8.2 making Messages version 7.0.1
Those small changes tend to mean that version 7.0 will not work with OS X 10.8.2  ( or the other way round)
It is all to do with the support apps and frameworks that help the app to work.

  • IChat A/V from Leopard to Tiger which port?

My Tiger10.4.11 iChat receives the Leopard 10.5.6 call request from one family member but another family member with same Leopard 10.5.6 has a problem in that it is not sending me[10.4.11] the call request, I hope this is not too confusing, any one have an idea about the missing call request from 10.5.6 on that Mac? It can't be my Tiger because I'm getting the window asking if I want to accept the A/V call from the first Leopard mentioned above.

    Hi,
iChat in any version by default uses port 5190 on the TCP Internet Protocol to Login to the AIM Servers. (this can of course be changed)
When you click on the Video icon of your Buddy (Or whatever other start method you use) iChat sends a Visible Invite on Port 5678 on the UDP Protocol.
iChat 4 varies at this point from iChat 2 and 3
iChat 2 and 3 send an SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) Invite behind the scenes on port 5060 (or any from 5060-5063 if port 5060 is busy).
iChat 4 moves this to port 16402
From there iChat 2 and 3 communicate with the other end as part of the SIP process to say which ports they are going to use (commonly ports 16384-16387 as Vid In, Vid Out, Audio In and Audio Out)
iChat 4 sticks with one port (16402)
iChat 2 and 3 can connect to iChat 4 despite this apparent Port mismatch as iChat can sort that out (it has been doing the same for years with AIM 5.5 and 5.9)
Now in most cases a routing device will not stop outgoing stuff so a Buddy contacting you will normally be able to send the Visible Invite on port 5678 even if they have not specifically opened (for Incoming stuff).
Can they contact others ? At least with the Visible Invite ?
