IChat 4.0.5 File Transfer Issue/Error

Hey,
I'm having trouble sending files through iChat... It works fine with some people but with other people it just keeps calculating then gives me the following msg: "Unexpected Error (possibly Someone did not respond in time)"
We are both using AIM accounts to use iChat...
My computer isn't directly connected to a modem, it connects through a router... The other person has the same setup...
Has anyone been able to come up with a solution to this?
Thanks

If you have not already change the Login port in iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings to port 443
You have to be logged out of AIM to make this change.
Also make sure you are using a method to open ports in any routing device that allows port 5190 on the UDP Protocol.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Some people are reporting that GoogleTalk files sending is a bit suspect with iChat
Some others are reporting issues with Snow Leopard to Leopard File Sharing although it works Leopard to Snow Leopard with the same computers. (AIM based Buddy lists)

Guess it's *nix SMB implementation issue and has nothing to do with Windows. And you can do nothing to tune the SMB except downgrading initial handshake version (what you already did).

  • WRT350N File Transfer Issues...

I'm unable to transfer files from one PC to the other.  I've upgraded the firmware to the latest revision (1.03.2).  PC1 is my laptop from work.  At work, I can connect to it w/o any problem and transfer files to/from any PC on the work network.
From home, If I attempt to connect to the laptop from the home computer, XP Pro comes back w/ "Cannot find...".  This should be fairly simple, but I can't seem to get it working.  I had the same problem w/ my other Linksys router before it died.  I went w/ the WRT350n because of the 1GB transfer rate between computers.
If I attempt to ping the laptop from the desktop, I get the correct results.  Going from the desktop from the laptop, no such luck.  Both systems are in the same workgroup and running XP Pro.
If I attempt to RDC into either system, I'm prompted for a username & password.  I receive the "This computer can't connect..." error.  Single Port Forwarding w/ port 3389 is enabled.
I've just about given up...  Anyone have any ideas?

I have this exact issue on my new WRT 610.  I'm all connected between laptop (Vista Home Premium) and desktop (Vista Ult), but when I try to copy files from a shared dir on the desktop to my laptop, it works ok for a while and then STOPS dead in the water after 10-15 mins and says "file is no longer located at location xxxxx".  Basically, my connection severs at that point, in midstream, because I can't even see the desktop anymore from the laptop until I reboot (I just reboot both machines).  This thread seems to indicate that shutting down the firewalls on both machines is the solution and thus is ok to do, but I'm unsure of that solution and scared to implement it.  I did a search and it seems that it is NOT recommended to shut down the Vista firewall even tho I have the hardware firewall now...  because only the Vista firewall can monitor the outgoing connections and halt them...   is this true?  Appreciate feedback, in the meantime I will risk it for a half hour and shut them down and see if the transfer goes longer and/or quicker.  My transfer speed between the two 'puters is disappointingly slow altho I can't quote an exact speed...  70 megs of files was gonna take 2 hrs and 30 mins per the windows popup.
P.S. Can someone please explain why the Vista firewall would be the issue here?  Why would it allow the transfer for 15 mins and 4-5 MB but then slice the connection?  Wouldn't it either allow the full file transfer or else not allow it at all?  I don't understand.

  • Ichat 4 + Google Talk + file transfer

    Hi!
I'm trying to send files from iChat to iChat both with GoogleTalk
    accounts without success.
The file transfer window displays that it is preparing but this goes
on forever. At the receiver the file transfer windows says
    calculating.
Both are using 10.5.2 with an up to date iChat. Firewall is off.
ScreenSharing and Audio/Video is working fine.
I tested it with .Mac accounts and there file transfering is working
    without any problems.
Thanks for any hint to solve this problem. It is really bothering me.
    Cheers,
    Stefan

I've tested this between my Google Talk account and my Jabber account. I used iChat on my Mac Mini to connect to iChat on my MacBook. Both are running 10.5.2. I found that for Jabber file transfers there are two phases. In phase 1 the Chat clients negotiate the file transfer parameters using the server as an intermediary. In phase 2 the receiver uses TCP to connect to the port from phase 1. If the connection is successful the file transfer begins. If it fails the sender can offer another IP address/port for transfer and the receiver can try again. This goes on until the sender has exhausted his list of available IP addresses and ports.
Problems with file transfer will usually happen at phase 1. At the end of phase 1 the Chat client that wishes to send the file sends a message that details the IP address and port for the receiver. The receiver should try to connect to this IP address and port and get the file. This will fail if there is either a NAT or a Firewall between the receiver and the sender. A NAT botches the transfer because iChat doesn't do anything to try to figure out what it's real address is. A firewall botches the transfer by discarding the inbound TCP SYN packets that initiate the communication between sender and receiver. This is made worse by the fact that as sender iChat doesn't use the same TCP port for transfer all the time.
In the end file transfer will work for two chat clients that can deliver packets between each other. Two people on the same LAN or on two seperate addresses that are neither NATed nor Firewalled. I've also got this going for people who have a VPN. iChat doesn't help you here. In fact it makes things worse by not choosing a constant port which means that arranging for transfer in your firewall policy is problematic. Ideally a chat client like Psi can be made to work. Psi allows the user to specify both the port and IP address specified in transfer.

  • File transfer problem: error -37

I'd like to copy the content of my old mac's (PPC G4 tower running OS 9.2.2) HD (which holds some 85GB of data in about 73,000 files) to a partition on my mini's HD (early 2009 model, running OS X 10.5.6). The machines are connected via ethernet (crossed cable, no 'real' network) and tcp/ip file sharing. Data transfer is done from the G4's side (the 145GB target partition on the mini is configured with read/write privileges for "everyone"). After about 95% completion (about 4GB/2,500 files remaining) of the data transfer, an error message appears ("Cannot copy file xyz because error -37 has occured") and the transfer is aborted even if I click "Continue" on the message box.
According to Apple's documentation, (MacOS 9) error -37 means the file name is longer than 31 characters, which I've made sure is not the case. Funnily, after the offending file has been deleted from the source HD and the transfer restarted, at about the same point (again about 4GB/2,500 remaining to be transferred), the error message pops up again, this time with a different file (or directory) name as the culprit.
This happens no matter whether the target partition is formatted as HFS+ oder HFS+ journaled. The source partition is formatted as HFS+. Also, the same problem also occurs when the transfer is started on the mini instead of the G4.
What am I doing wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You may want to repair the hard drives on both machines, just in case the problem is something other than what is actually being reported. Also, what I have done when having odd copy problems with such large batches of files is to copy them in smaller batches. When you run into a problem, break up whatever batch you were copying into smaller batches. Keep going until you've narrowed it down to the specific files that are giving you trouble.
Alternately, you could find some kind of file copy utility to do the job for you. I don't have any recommendations, as I have never used something like that. Look for something that will log errors without halting with a cryptic error.

  • WD Elements External drive file transfer issue.

I have just purchased a 1.5Tb USB 2.0 WD Elements external hard drive for backing up data. I have partitioned it, using Disk Utility in to a 1Tb Fat32 and 500Mb OS Journaled (Extended) pair of partitions. The OS Journaled (Extended) partition will replace a smaller Maxtor drive as my Time Machine Backup drive.
The problem: When I attempt to copy/move a file from either the Mac HD or my current backup drive, a 750Gb Maxtor, I get the message "*The operation can't be completed because an item with the name "file/folder name" already exists*." On the Windows XP Boot Camp partition file transfer is not a problem
WD have not been of much assistance and I am hoping someone can remedy this problem for me.

and btw, since I have the exact same My Book Essential USB 2.0 1.5 terabyte drive the poster has, I retrieved the Box it came in (Green) and It says plainly on the box. "Compatibility - Formatted NTFS for Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.
Requires reformatting for Mac OS X Tiger, or Leopard".
OP states he formatted a 1 terabyte partition FAT32. Do any of you actually understand the size restrictions of FAT32? I didn't think so.
I have no problem with this or any other drive since I format every drive I buy for the purpose that I had in mind.
The decision is size/interface/price. Any WD will do, since usb2 at 480 mbits/sec is faster than firewire 400 and out of my 4 macs only usb2 is common across them all, it's a no brainer. Yeah, firewire 800 is faster but only half my macs support it.
So it goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity? TM only updates once per hour. In loose terms it sleeps 50 minutes of every hour when it's not needed. So What.
So in a day's time, that's 1,200 minutes that it doesn't spin...that sounds like a feature to me.
How many new, inexperienced users have you people talked into taking perfectly good drives back to the store? I see it post after post and quite frankly, you don't know what you're talking about.
Full disclosure. I don't work for, or have ever been paid anything from WD. I don't have stock in WD (although I've thought about it). I don't have any other ID's on this board so I don't "game it" like other users.

  • File transfer issues in Skype 6.22?

Recently updated to 6.22 and lost the ability to decline incoming files. In previous versions you had to options - accept or decline, now the only options seem to be "accept" or ignore and then the file request just sits in the chat window as incomplete. Is this a setting that can be changed or do I need to stay annoyed by it forever?
Moreover: After accepting a file transfer, you used to be able to click the "view in folder" link and open the file location. This also seem to be removed. Comments on this?

...also you can just start by opening the conversation with the first member of your future group you want to create and then simply use the "Add contacts" button on top right to add the other members. This way a new group conversation will be created as well.
We are right now working to update this FAQ to reflect that information: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA1005/how-do-i-start-a-group-instant-message-in-skype-for-windows-...

  • SCP log file transfer issues after upgrade

We upgraded out AsyncOS from 6.3.3 to 7.1.3 and now we are encountering log transfer issues with 2 out of 3 WSA's. Also the log rotation is set at 3GB but is rotating at 1GB. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi Dominick,
FIrst look at your log subscriptions for the access logs. Log into the GUI -> System Administration -> Log Subscriptions -> Access Logs highlighted in blue on the left side of the window. Check that your configuration is set to your needs. Next we need to review what is taking place when SCP tries to send the logs to the destination by reviewing the System Logs also located within the log subscriptions. Is the destination a Windows or Linux device ? If it is a Linux device you may also want to look into var/log/secure for the log information there as well.

  • File transfer issues - qt won't play

i transferred a bunch of folders and qt files from one mac to
another yesterday and now nothing plays. the files show as
being unix executables rather than qt files and i get an error,
i think -39, that they can't be played as they are not movie
files. i tried chmodding the permissions recursively through
the folder but no luck; they're on a drive on which permissions
    are ignored anyway.
the process i used was to move the files first to an external
usb drive formatted to fat32, then i took that drive to the
new macpro and transferred them to its drive. the files appear
on the external fat32 drive as unix executables.
the first time i tried the transfer it crashed giving an error-36
goinjg from the original mac to the external fat32. after that
i used the command line (cp -Rpv from to) and the transfer was,
at least on the surface, successful.
how can i get these files to play? what did i overlook?
    thanks,
    BabaG

i managed to get it to play in IE.so I guess the issue had something to do with firefox.

  • File transfer issues

I'm attempting to transfer files from my (very) old G4 (running OS 10.4) to my new mini via firewire. I have no problem starting the G4 in target disk mode, but it doesn't show up anywhere on the mini.
What am I missing here? I've read everything I can find but nothing has addressed this problem. I've skimmed the topics here and also didn't see anything, so my apologies if this has already been answered.
    Thx~
    Deb

After talking with Apple Support, only to be told to do exactly everything I'd already done a 100+ times, I'm no closer to resolving this issue than I was before. I suppose I could have purchased a bad firewire cable, though it seems kind of unlikely. Or perhaps the firewire ports on the G4 are bad, though they've never even been used.
I have no other ideas, though. Does anyone have a thought? Please? Am I stuck transferring years' worth of files via ethernet?

  • N95 OSX Multimedia Transfer Issue error code 208

Hi I have the latest download of Multimedia Transfer (1.3) and my OSX is 10.4.11 every time I try to transfer files I get the error code 208 device refused the operation. This is very frustrating, this is my send N95 8gb and just after I uploaded my contacts into this one nearly all calls & texts come through with just the number & no identity.
I did not have either problem with my previous N95, can anyone assist please?
    Matt

on phone, open music player.  click options -> refresh library.  wait a long, long time.  3.8GB will take a while.  during this process you'll see a count of songs found.
you can't close music player while this happens, and it is a much longer wait than you might expect - so be sure you don't need to do anything with your phone for at least 30 minutes.  put it on a charger if you can, it's a lot of sdcard access which is a power hog.
once this is done, the phone has an internal database of music - much like the Library.xml file in iTunes.  just like itunes, copying music into the music folder doesn't make it show up in the music player - you must tell itunes to import the music into the library database.  but after this painful period of waiting... the music player works very nicely and you only have to do this again if you add or remove music.
    goodluck,
    -bit
    N95-1 ---> N97-NAM ---> N900 ---> E7-00 + N900 (I use them both)
(N95 was pretty good, N97 had potential but utterly failed to deliver, N900 is absurdly good. Those of you wondering, "should I try N900/Maemo/MeeGo"? The answer is a resounding YES)

  • Zen Micro file transfer issue - h

I just purchase a Zen Micor and installed everything, charged it, downloaded 0 songs and it worked great. So I tried to download some more, and they all ~80, "failed" to transfer. So I installed the new firmware thinking that may be the problem, but still unable to download anymore music. I did a clean disk and reboot, still nothing.
Does anyone have any ideas on what may be wrong, or what to do to correct this. I'd really hate to have to take this back, but not sure what to do at this point. I've never had this problem with my ipod or iri'ver before?
    Thanks,
    Josh

all the songs are mp3 format
the transfer window pops up, the status will say writing for about 5sec. then the error comes up and says unable to create file - restart player and try again.
but then the player has the acti've docked logo on, which you aren't supposed to unplug from the computer when that's on, but it will not go off. I've left it for hours and ended up unplugging it anyway. So I've restarted it, pulled the batter and retried that a few times too.
    Any ideas?
    thanks for your help

  • Help with file transfer issue

When importing a music file from my computer, Itunes does not transfer the file complete, but rather separates songs from the album.  I end up with several files in itunes, all from the same album.  It seems that the ones seperated are usually songs that "feature" other artists.

Yeah this is a common issue, what you need to do is highlight all the songs that are suppose to be under the same album and make sure the Album title is correct and the Album Artist is correct. If not you will want to change it so it is reflected correctly.

    Hi,
Later versions of iChat and Messages lists some accounts (as seen in the Preferences > Accounts ) differently to earlier version of iChat.
At iChat 3 you could log in only one AIM (or AIM valid) name and one Jabber/Google name at one time.
Meaning a max of three Buddy list on view with the Bonjour Account Included.
The GoogleTalk login in iChat 3 required you manually changed the server name as Google don't folow the regular Jabber/XMPP practice of the full ID being based on the server name  ([email protected]).
At iChat 4 you could log in multiple of each
It listed either "AIM/Jabber Buddy List" if there was only one and the username/ID/Screen Name  if you did not add a Description (Account info tab)
At Messages with the System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars involvement the Account gets listed as GoogleTalk type (As opposed to AIM or Jabber) in the List whilst using your Description as the title to the Buddy List window.
Older iChats versions will still list Google Log ins as Jabber.
This is a pic using Psi (A Jabber specific App that can do "Service Discovery")
    Google effectively lists nothing.
The one for another server (Jabber.me.uk)
It lists "Transports" that allow connections to other services and the File Proxy Transfer amongst others.
The Pop up is also greatly extended as to what the plain server can do.
It also seems difficult to find info on what Google have set up Google Talk to allow
