IChat -8 Message

My nephew away at college has my iMac 24 he has it set up in his dorm room using the university's wireless. He is able to iChat his Mom at her house where she has a iMac 20 with comcast and it works fine but she is the only one he can get through to on iChat. His brother (Mac Book), me at work (new iMac 20, using comcast), his friend in Texas (old iMac 20), and me at home (mac mini with iSight, and a MacBook, using comcast) can't ichat him. Everytime we try we keep getting the same -8 error message that I see posted all over this forum. All of us however can iChat each other he is the only one we can't. I have tried the different ports and the quicktime / bandwith suggestions to no success. I would think the problem is in the university's connection but then why would he be able to iChat his Mom with constant success. Sorry if I am long winded just wanted to set the stage the best I could. If any one has a new idea I am will to try it. We all can text chat fine its the audio and video thats the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. MIKE

Hi Shelco2,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
Ummm A poser and no mistake.
I would look to how people have ports open in their routing devices.
iChat is unfriendly to use if it it goes through too many instances of NAT.
It can also be a bit funny about the way the devices on each end do NAT.
NAT is used to transfer the data coming from the Internet to the LAN side of your routing device be it modem or router or both.
Port forwarding remains the most common method of opening the ports.
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) can certainly help as it does not rely so much on NAT (Network Address Translation)
Now if his mother is using UPnP and everyone else is not then this may be the area to look at.
IF this is not a common factor then look at additional features such as DOS (Denial of Service Protection) or SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) or QoS (Quality of Service).
The first of these two protect you from suspicious contacts over the internet.
DoS works on cutting anything that looks like Too Much Data too Quickly coming to your computer. Stateful Packet Inspection in simple terms decides whether it should be going to your computer.
QoS is supposed to help VoIP connection but often gets in the way.
Basically his connection could be that much faster than before that he can send you lots of Data (possibly enough for 20 or 30 frames a sec of Video data which is much more than 15 fps).
I would adjust those settings that can be to be more tolerant or as the case with most devices turn them off.
Next I would check if everyone has done their Quicktime Setting
(System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set the drop down to 1.5Mbps)
Basically you seem to be running into the areas where iChat just seems to be plain quirky. Trying to find the issue that may be effecting everyone will be a needle in a haystack.
More likely is the fact that several issue may be causing different problem for each contact.

  • Ichat and messages aren't communicating on bonjour network

Hi there...i've been searching for some help to my question but haven't found it.
    This is the problem.
at my office we have some Macs running ichat with snow leopard and other ones running messages with maverick.
When we try to chat between us, we can do it only if we are using the same app/os even when we can
see all the colleagues on the bonjour network...
    to be more clear...
everyone is visible on buddy list, either we have ichat or message installed...
computer A running messages and maverick can send and receive messages to/from computer B running also messages and maverick  and viceversa
computer C running ichat and snow leopard can send and receive messages to/from computer D running also ichat and snow leopard and viceversa
computer A/B (messages/maverick) cannot send or receive messages from computers C/D (ichat/snow leopard) and viceversa
hope there is a solution out there, thanks in advance for any help...

    Hi,
Let me see if I have understood you correctly.
No matter what OS version or Messages or iChat Version all the Buddies show in each other's Buddy lists ?
Despite this only Mavericks with Messages 8 to Mavericks and Messages 8 will work with each and the same for Snow Leopard and iChat 5 based computers ?
What is not working in Mavericks to Snow Leopard (which is Messages to iChat 5) ?
Separate from using the iChat and Messages app do all the  computers appear in the Finders Side Bar for Computer "Shares" ?
I have a NAS drive which uses Mac's AFP protocol and the Windows SMB protocol AND it can be set to be  Time Machine Backup place and can do Bonjour Shares. (it appears 4 times in my list)
In addition to that I have my two other computers turned On (MacBook Pro and a G4)
This would tend to imply that the computers are all in the same part of the LAN (If the router has the IP of 192.168.0.1 only the last number should be different for all the computers)
My Computer is using WiFi (it's Airport card) to connect to the network.
The router is using the 192.168.0.x group as can be seen by the computer getting IP 192.168.0.17 in this pic
The Subnet mask should also be the same across all computers.
In addition no two computers should have the Same Name.
When I set up my computers I tend to use  my own name so each computer then gets called "Ralph Johns's Computer"  (it can't cope properly with the s at the end of my surname)
AS you can see from the Pic Above I have changed my Older G4 computer to be called "Ralphs' G4" and my Laptop to "Ralph Johns MacBook Pro"
These "Names" for the computers are also close to the names I use on the Address Cards for myself on those computers.
i.e. on the G4 the My Card in the Address Book list "Ralph G4" as my name.  (My MacBook Pro does have me as Ralph Johns)
On my iMac I am posting from (Mavericks) I can called Ralph Johns-iMac in my Address Card.
It is these names in the My Card (Address book and Contacts list on each computer) that gives the Bonjour Buddy list the names of the Buddies.
Therefore I can see my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard/iChat 5 and the G4 Leopard/iChat 4) in the Bonjour Buddy list.
    To summarise the last section.
The computers AND the Address Card for the Mac user on that computer needs to be different in each case.
The Computer names show in the Shared items in the Finder's Side Bar and then the Address Book/Contacts Name appears as the Buddy in the list.
My iMac uses the Sig Pic I use here as the buddy pic.  The G4 using Leopard and iChat 4 uses the Leopard skin looking pic and the photo one is used on my Snow Leopard/iChat 5 computer.
I have moused over the "Buddy" Ralph Johns to bring up the info panel also in the pic to show it is from my MacBook Pro which shows the computer name plays a part in this.
Cloning computers before upgrading them or even Cloning a Mac User account from one computer to another will cause issue if the Computer names  or the My Card details are not changed.
I normally use mine for transferring Pics  but I have also Texted between iChat 5 and Messages 8 today.
I hope this helps you find out which settings may need changing.

  • Cannot screen-share between iChat and Messages

    I have the following computers:
    --MacMini running 10.6 and iChat
--Mac Pro running 10.7 and Messages
--MacBook Pro running 10.8 and Messages
For years (prior to Messages) I have successfully undertaken screen-sharing with other people. Now I find that if I attempt to share the screen of someone outside of my local area network who is running iChat and system 10.6, I can only do this from my iChat computer. The two computers running Messages will fail to establish the screen-sharing session.
I have noticed that iChat signs into:
    login.oscar.aol.com
    Port 5190
    Require SSL is unchecked
    The Mac Pro signs into:
    api.oscar.aol.com
    Port 443
    Use SSL is checked
    The MacBook Pro signs into:
    api.oscar.aol.com
    Port 443
    Use SSL is unchecked
Any ideas as to why screen-sharing should be non-functional between my two Messages computers and another computer running iChat?

    Hi,
Error Messages were present in iChat 2  (the one called iChatAV in 2004) but only in the Connection Doctor.
In iChat 3 that appeared as Pop up as well on Chat Failures that could be expanded to see a Log.  (referenced in the end of my signature block).
Apple had chosen SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to make the connects between two Buddies.
In iChat 2 and 3 this was using the ports given over to SIP in an internationally agreed standard (ports 5060-5063)
One port at a time is used and they move upwards until a free one is found.
SIP phones for VoIP calls and Vonage adaptors also used this protocol.
Despite the international agreement  many ISPs started to block the SIP ports, presumably due to loss of revenue from Long Distance calls.  (Many said people could pay to have these Ports/services back)
At iChat 4 Apple moved the iChat app to using port 16402 as first choice for the SIP data.
The logs are still there in Mountain Lion and Messages but it does take a particular sort of chat failure to get them to appear.  (it is more to do with the more common failures seem to be reduced now rather than being non-existent).
Messages is very much iChat with iMessages added on. (and then the Chat Window/Interface change).
What were iChat "Accounts" are accounts in Messages and you can get the Buddy Lists to display the same way as before.
The connection Processes are exactly the same.
I have had chats that seemed to be connecting but gave the "Connecting" messages with the spinning cogwheel "forever" but as you say it is a long time since I have seen one like that.
In those cases the Log is not produced as iChat or Messages does not recognised that the chat has failed.
In cases here this repeatedly happens it is best to start up the app using the Log generation mode in Terminal.
    Quit Messages first.
    Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities)
Copy and Paste the Bold text below into Terminal
    /Applications/Messages.app/Contents/MacOS/Messages -errorLogLevel 7
This will cause Terminal to Launch Messages and produce a Log whilst doing so.
It will be quite long before it pauses when the Buddy lists are displayed.
The Log will be at a point that looks like this when that happens.
    201835.893727 CommNAT result:
    External IP: 94.xx.xxx.xx           (editted)
    External Ports: 16403, 16403, 16403

201835.893985 75 routing table entries found.

Then you can start a Video chat and the log will repeat much of what it checked on before (Camera, Mic, Bandwidth etc) and then will start the familiar "log" from the Error messages.
(you can quit Messages at this point so you are not interrupted by the log getting even longer)

If thre connection is successful and you end it then the Log adds a Bye message (Similar to the Trying one) and then checks its hardware abilities again.
There is much more to the log than I have said here but also much of it is also repeated.
SIP/2.0 100 Trying should be seen before the SIP/2.0 180 Ringing  and the SIP/2.0 200 OK
You are probably going to looking for endless repeats of the ringing part.

Some of the othe info in the log may prove useful such as the Bandwidth it finds (BWD)
    202444.629246 BWD: GotBandwidth: 9080501/23966942 (up/down) @[11.0.168.192:0.255.255.255]
202444.629266 BWD bandwidth: 9080 kbits up, 23966 kbits down.
I don't need the whole log at this stage just highlights if you think they might point to things.
I would be keen to see the Bandwidth the app sees as this might be a clue.
The CommNAT details will also be useful.
You can Quit Messages normally and then Quit Terminal or just Quit Terminal and Confirm the Quitting of processes it is running.

  • Why am I getting an ichat error message?

I have had my fantastic brand new black macbook for 2 days, and have been receiving random error messages on ichat. I used to get this message on my old mac when i tried to transfer a file, and then send a message before it was done transferring. However, now it comes randomly. Anyone know why
    An AIM service error occurred.
    Error: Serv:RequestTimeout
is it my internet connection or something with my computer?
    Thanks

    Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • Camera in Use iChat error message

When I try to initiate an iChat video chat, I get this message:
    Camera in Use
Your camera appears to be in use by another application. Please quit any other application that might be using the camera.
This was the first time I'd tried to access the webcam since I turned on the computer. The only other program that's open that access the webcam is Skype. I've also heard that when people try to initiate a video chat with me they are told that the camera is in use.
I've been using iChat for years; this problem just started happening within the last two weeks.
    Thanksd!

    Umm,
Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Your account > Login Items and see if Flash is listed there.
It may pay to try turning Off Flash in your Browser as a Test for a few minutes (i.e not permanently)

  • How to iChat / Instant Message without Internet?

I need to be able for two computers to talk to each other via a instant messaging program weather it be AIM / iChat / Third Party software but without a internet connection.
I know there are programs that work for the PC that are called LAN Messengers or LAN Chat, but I can't seem to find one that works with a OSX.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

If on the same network use Bonjour.

In that case I would guess the ADSL modem is possibly a Thomson-Alcatel Speedtouch.
There are several dozen Speedtouch variations going back at least 10 years with the base 500 series (510, 510i 510v4 516, 546, 580 and so on)
At about 4 years ago they brought newer versions to work with their Version 5 fimware (they are now up to Version 7) and numbers like 716 and 780 and others have appeared.
If it is a Speedtouch they have specific issues for iChat that are difficult to solve above version 5 firmware.
Other modems that do Port Forwarding can create the same situation.
http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page15.html#CertainBuddy Using UPnP is normally the answer.
Knowing the precise Make and Model of the device you have will help even if it is not a Speedtouch.

  • How do I upgrade from ichat to messages on my Macbook

    Hello,
I have a Macbook OS X that I purchased in 2012.  It has ichat on it, but not messages.  Any idea how to get Messages on my Macbook?
    Thanks!

You will need to upgrade up Mountain Lion 10.8. See the link below for info.

  • Can't Launch iChat - Error Message

iChat launches and asks for “AOL instant messaging password” then it crashes before anything can be done or altered.
Error Message: "Application iChat quit unexpectedly.“
In other words, I can’t get into iChat to change preferences before it crashes. We felt the problem was a conflict with AOL. My fiance’ signed up for AOL when she first received her MacBook. We tried deleting any file relative to AOL. Still, no iChat.
Is there a way to delete iChat and re-install iChat through the Apple web site?

    See your double post.

  • IChat error messages...

I have a desktop mac and a macbook.... when trying to iChat with friends on the desktop I keep getting the person you are trying has not responded error (i can text them with no problem)
BUT when i am on the macbook i have no issues so i KNOW the problem is on my end somewhere... i looked at the iChat preferences and they are exactly the same
where should i go next to get iChat working on the desktop???

Thank you for all this info...
my computer runs leopard 10.5.8 (i thought i would share this since there are so many different OS out there)
i went to the security section and iChat is listed as set to allow incoming connections (the notebook does not even have iChat listed... i actually have 5 other things listed in this area and wonder if they are needed, like excel and powerpoint??)
and for the time capsule i do not know how to find the settings of the time capsule.. when i click on the TC it only gives me back up options... i clicked all over (obviously not in the right places) and cant find anything...
ALso here is the log i saved during my last failed iChat attempt... i am not sure if it helps

  • IChat to messages - phone and macbook intertwined

My daughter and I both have macbooks - she is on mountain lion, I am on lion.
She has messages and i have ichat.
We both have iphones. I am on ios6 she is on ios5
When she sends messages to me at my me.com email address from her macbook in messages it comes to my phone but not to my ichat on my mac.
How can we get to chat macbook to macbook.

    Hi,
iMessages is something that Messages (App on Mac or iOS Device) can do.
This is in addition to the former iChat services such as using AIM or Jabber.
That is to say that on her Message App she set sup an iMessage Account (Apple ID "registered" for iMessages)
She can or could set up and AIM valid Name or a Jabber ID as you can in iChat.
    iChat does not do iMessages.
So Apple Issued IDs are also Valid AIM Screen Names (Those ending @mac.com and @me.com)
Both of you may be able to set these up as AIM names in your app (older version of iChat have separate @me.com and @mac.com settings)
iCloud Issued @me.com name need at least iChat 6 to work (iChat 6 and Messages also login to me.com that then allows the AIM server to "see" the password.
This may mean that your daughter has two Accounts both using the Apple ID (one with iMessages and one with AIM - I do this)

  • How to Record a video message (iChat) in messages?

I use to record iChat's with my grand children, but after upgrading to Mavericks, and their move to MESSAGES...
The option to Record Video Chat does not seem to be available, Is this true?  and if so...
    1) is there a work around?
    2) or another piece of software that allows recording of a video chat?
    OR
if it is still available, how do I get the option to show up on my menu?
    Thanks for your help...
    Bill

    Hi,
I got Screeny in Mountain Lion and it works in Mavericks.
I see Joe M has put up the Feedback link which is advisable.
(you have to add your specs to the free text area as the drop downs for the version have never bben up to date or even in sync with the OS drop down).
As to why Apple changed this ?
Unclear.  The boards specifically say speculation is not allowed.
    However.
    1) the app initially did not request that the Viewee agreed
    2) there have been many instances including schools on pupils who have school devices being "spied" on.
    3) internet related privacy is tending to be increased.

  • Cannot Receive/View iChat Text Messages

When I double-click a buddy, it won't open a new chat. When I triple-click a buddy, it opens a blank chat "with no participants," but my buddy will receive my messages. However, I do not receive their replies. My buddies cannot start conversations with me; they do not open new windows, and I cannot view their messages.
I have reinstalled the app twice, and I've deleted everything in the Preferences folder. I've run Software Update several times, so I guess I've got the most recent version of iChat.
I can't say for sure how long this has been going on, but it's been a good while. It's only on my MacBook Pro that this problem exists; I have no problems running iChat on my iMac.

After you re-installed did you install the 10.5.5 combo to bring iChat back up to date.

  • Switching from ichat to messages

    Hello,
How do I transfer my iChat preferences from an old computer (10.7.5) to a new computer using Messages (Mavericks 10.9.1)?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
In Messages Preferences > Video section the settings are the same.
The Accounts pane looks different (the Names and icons for accounts are bigger)
You obviously have the iMessage account as a default one like the Bonjour one (neither can be deleted)
The Alerts pane which is where you might have set sounds for specific actions has gone.
The only sound you can change now is for Message Received and this is now in the General Section.
You can Set the Default sound, Anything in the System Sounds or in your Home Folder/Library/Sounds.
What was the Messages pane has become "Viewing"
Some of the actions are slightly different.
You have to select Changing the background (balloon) colour before you can change the Font and it's colour.
This applies to both your outgoing text and the incoming Overrides if you use them.
In the General section the middle part (between the drop down for the Messages Received Sound and When I return)  only applies to Logged in Buddy lists.
Obviously in iChat 6 in Lion you will have had at least one Buddy list enabled and they would be active all the time.
History (Saved Chats) is set here but will only do so when the Conversation (iMessages) or Chat (Buddy Lists) are closed or the App is Quit.
The Settings for Status only applies to Buddy list accounts as does the option to display the icon in the Menu bar.
As far as I can make out the AppleScript at the bottom will now only apply to Messages Received
You cannot set them individually for Buddies any more.
As before most of the menus apply to Buddy lists rather than iMessages.
The Window Menu still controls the windows on display
CMD+0 displays the default main window (chat window and interface)
Chat are now tabbed by default. (it takes work to get individual chat window)
The Buddies are in a Combined list by default (CMD+1) but can be separated out by unticking the line in the General section (Gather all accounts in one window).
You can still drag the order in the Account section and this effects the list in the Window Menu.
    iChat Theatre has been lost.
SMS has disappeared from the Menus  so you have to Add a Telephone Number as a Buddy to make it work
(Only to the United States with a leading +1 as in +1234567890 and to certain carriers).
If I have missed anything you want to know about more specifically please ask.

  • New iChat error message

All of a sudden I get the following "iChat connection alert" error message when trying to open iChat:
    "Lost connection with AIM
The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost."
This has happened repeatedly over the past several days...have no idea how to fix, iChat help is useless and this is frustrating!
    Thanks for any insight!
