Ichat/aim/adium problems

when i sign in to ichat, aim, and adium, i stay logged in for a little while, but then it signs me off and doesn't tell me that i've been kicked off. it looks like i'm online but none of my friends can see me. there is a lag like this for a couple of minutes and then it finally tells me that the connection timed out if i try typing another message. this is very frustrating. i've tried reinstalling everything and it doesn't help. i have also tried changing the aim port to 443. does anyone have any insight?

Hi,
Try turning Off the SSL option in iChat  (And in Adium if it has it).
iChat needs this manually reset if the Connection is lost to the SSL server at AIM  (It also goes down more frequently than the regular server).

  • Ichat, AIM, Adium frequently disconnect using Airport

Ichat, AIM, & Adium all frequently disconnect when using Airport. I use a Linksys Wireless Router with an Airport extreme card. When directly connected to the router, I have no problem. Using a PC with Windows XP, AIM operates fine. Safari and Firefox work fine, although sometimes I receive errors connecting to pages, when I try again no problem. Using any of the chat programs, I lose connection, but then can reconnect. After a few times, the AOL servers will prevent login.
I use COMCAST Cable internet service. My wireless router uses WEP encryption. I would switch to an AIrport Base station, but doubt it would correct the problem.
I have had this problem previously, but it corrected itself. now it is making chat programs unusable.
    Any ideas?

    Hi John,
By default Linksys units normally have the IP address of 192.168.1.1
Is this true for both your units or have you changed one of them ?
You may only find this out if you connect directly to the Modem one.
Also you have not said if only one of them is doing DHCP.
Example pic 3 on this page. This shows this device as getting it own contact IP address by DHCP (like from your ISP). Further down the page in the pic it shows the device is also acting as a DHCP server to the local net.
If your router is set up like this it could be getting an IP address usng DHCP like this device shows and that would tend to mean that the Modem is acting as a DHCP server as well.
If both devices still have the default IP addresses you will have conflicts, which probably explians the problems you have.

  • Ichat aim connection problems

I can connect to my dad in the UK on his PC from my mac.
I can hear him, but his frame rate is around 1fps - really slow, his bit rate at 20 bits ps (he's on broadband) My connection Doctor shows my fps at 20fps and my bitrate at 200+. He can hear me sometimes but he says i break up alot and says my picture is really bad.
He is running XP pro with a Toucam Phillips pro using AIM. He has Nortons security internet firewall. He has been to a page which is supposed to of sorted the firewall issue which someone mentioned on a previous post.
    Can anybody help?

Since updating to Tiger I've been unable to make an audio iChat connection. It merely says "insufficient bandwidth" which of course is completely bogus. My bandwidth speed has not changed and was totaly sufficient before. The only thing that changed was upgrading to Tiger.
So, after reading every post on this topic I can find and doing every suggestion that Apple has made, it still does not work.
First, I upgraded from 10.4.1 to 10.4.2: doesn't work. Then I set the long list of ports in the TCP and UDP Sharing settings: doesn't work. Then I deleted the iChat .plist files: doesn't work.
The most recent post I've found now claims that some routers do not support iChat features. Well, my router (a Linksys WRT54G) supported iChat under 10.3 just fine and nothing in my router has changed since then. So now I am waiting for a new router to arrive. Will iChat decide to work then? I have no reason to be hopeful.
What really irks me the most about all of this (not counting the days I've spent jumping through one hoop after another) is that Apple can't simply admit they broke a perfectly working product and are now trying to shove the blame off on non-supported (read non-Apple) routers.
Has Bill Gates taken over Apple? This is the exactly kind of "update" I'd expect from Redmond.

  • IChat AIM Problems withbanned users.

I was arbitrarily banned by an AIM room owner. I made a new AIM account, but iChat is saying that I'm banned, regardless of the user name / screen name. I am able to enter the rooms with AIM Instant Messanger, but not with iChat. Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks Ralph, but that's not it at all. I deleted everything to do with iChat, including the application itself. I also deleted ALL of my keychain passwords from AIM, as well as the signing certificate. Nothing has worked for me. I suspect there is another link somewhere in the system that has attached itself to iChat 4. Last night I even did a complete reinstall of OS X 10.5, then updated it 10.5.1. Time machine was on though. It still doesn't work. The Ban was lifted yesterday, and I had no problem getting into any of the chatrooms with AOL Instant Messenger. So something's up with iChat 4, at least on my system anyway. I could not find the file named: com.apple.ichat.aim.plist however. To better explain what happened, it goes like this. I had one screen name that was banned from an aim chat room. With iChat 4, none of my other screen names will work. They all say that I have been kicked out, and cannot rejoin. However, as I said earlier, AIM Messenger works just fine now. It's very strange, and I can only assume that something is wrong with another unknown file that is linked to iChat 4. Fortunately, the first time I deleted all the iChat files, it allowed me into the rooms, but only for a few seconds. Then an error dialog came up and said: your encryption link with "**** lol [email protected]" has been damaged, or broken, or something like that. So I assumed that that user was the hacker that broke my iChat. I have to believe at this time that something is wrong somewhere else in the system files that are linked to iChat 4. I could be wrong, but I've tried just about everything, except erasing my laptop drive, and reinstalling everything anew. So, I dunno?
    Thanks.

  • AIM login problem on Macbook Pro

    hi all,
i can't logon to aim with iChat (or Adium).
it doesn't seem to come from my network since i can logon to AIM on WinXP (using Trillian).
also, i tried to connect using my .mac account, and it seems that .mac is using the aim network?? (login.oscar.aol.com server)
    this is really weird.
    any hints?

    Hi vvlinnzz,
How is your moemd set up to handle two computers ?
Are you using UPnP or Port Triggering that will allow multiple computers to use the same ports ?
Port Forwarding will generally point incoming data to one IP address only.
AS AIM and iChat both log on to AIM on port 5190 you may have problems with Port Forwarding.
In addition go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts
Select the account you are trying to Log on with
Go to the Account Info tab.
Whilst it is logged out of AIM select the third Check box (Allow Multiple Logins)
This will allow both computers or two different apps on the Mac to log in to AIM with the same Screen name.
If the account names are different and the @mac password is over 16 cahracters you will have problems.
Make the @mac password shorter (AIM only allows 16 .mac allows more)

  • "Rend Error" when sending image via iChat/AIM

On my brand new iMac aluminum, I am unable to send, and friends are unable to send, images via iChat AIM 3.1.8 (V445). When either of us try to send, we get the message "An undefined AIM error has occured. The server message was: Rend: Error"
I then spin around and use my old G4 iMac to send an image - no problem. My buddy is also able to send to me, no problem.
Both computers are connected to the same Linksys WRT54G router. When I searched for the term 'rend' only one thread came back which suggested to change the port from 5190 to 443. I did this and it didn't help.
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Craig,
In the Linksys set up pages you have Application and Gaming (Which is where I think you are talking about)
In there there are several options.
Port Forwarding, Port Triggering, DMZ (possibly UPnP Forwarding and QoS)
Disable any Port Forwarding or Port Triggering. DO not use the DMZ.
Save settings. (you should still have Web browsing and Mail abilities).
GO to the Administration tab on the top row.
    Enable UPnP.
    Save Settings.
UPnP allows multiple computers to use the same ports.
This way the Linksys can be left doing DHCP if you wish and it will not matter if your computer gets a new IP every now and then. Also the Ports are opened by the application and close after a timed period of non use.
You can limit the "Hops" to the number of devices the computer is from the Linksys (1 ?) to make it more secure.
On the main set up page you could limit the the DHCP range to the number of computers you have to prevent outside connections.
The ports you describe so far are only the TExt chatting and file sending ports

  • IChat AIM got disconnected.

I was on my iChat aim today then it randomly said "iChat cannot connect with AIM user." I tried changing the port to 443 and nothing happened. This happens sometimes but I'm usually able to fix it but this time its not. All my other users are working but not this one. I tried putting the user that's disconnected into aim.com but it said "cannot log in due to the attempts to try logging in please try again later." I don't know what to do now. Please help.

I'm having this same problem. If i try to initiate an audio or video chat with a windows user it will fail, they will get an error message saying connection error or something along those lines. If a windows user tries to start an audio or video chat with me it will also fail and i would get this long error message...

  • Can't login in to iChat/AIM, Error - Auth:ResvLinkError

When I try to login in to iChat/AIM I get the following error...
    Auth:ResvLinkError
Any ideas? I try logging in on another screen name on my MacBook and have no problems.

    See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5469597&#5469597
    And worth a try.
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • IMing to non-ichat/aim pc users

Does anyone know of a good IM for talking to non ichat/aim pc users? I tried yahoo messenger and couldn't get the voice or video to work.

iChat has an Idle coloured blob for Buddies that are Available but have not touched anything on their keyboard for a while.
Other client offer the chance to distinguish between Away and Idle-Away buddies as well.
iChat can not do this last option even though it is part of the AIM Protocols (it's ignored rather than not implemented on the iChat end) But as it is part and parcel so to speak your Buddies with clients that can tell see you as not Idle if you just have the Away message up.
On other clients you can not call Away Buddies were as in iChat you can be called.

  • IChat & AIM: Sleeping

Is there any way i can be logged on to AIM when my macbook goes to sleep?

    Hi Robben hood:
The only way to stay logged into iChat/AIM is to prevent your Mac from going to sleep.
    Sorry!

  • Aim connection problem

says logged in too many times in a short period of time.. tried changing the port to 443 and it had no affect.

You may have to delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist to reset things.
you will need to Restart iChat afterwards.
The file is in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences

  • AIM connect problem

    Hi
I am running ichat 3.1.2 on a G4 powerbook with Tiger. I used to be able to connect in to AIM, but lately, it logs me in for a second, then drops me. Are there settings to try and adjust? I tried the "slogin.oscar.aol" and alos changed the port from 5190 to 443, I didn't see any difference, it still dropped me. I tried playing around with the proxy settings, but those made no difference either. Do I need a later version of iCHat? If so, how do I get it?
Are there other networks to try? I don't have the option to pick google chat.
    help appreciated
    thanks

iChat gets updates when you update the OS (Or at least that is the way of things since iChat 2.1)
There were two exceptions during Tiger. One was pre 10.4.1 and took iChat to version 3.0.1
The later one was just after 10.4.6 if I recall correctly.
At 3.1.2 I believe you must be around 10.4.7 or so
Th slogin name is for a SSL login which I am under the impression only iChat 4 will do.
AS you are in iChat 3.1.x then delete the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart iChat.
You will find this in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences.
Also go to the iChat > Preferences > Accounts and check the security and check the Block list does not contain all your Buddies.
I wrote an FAQ for iChat 4 users but you could try that after that if it has not helped so far.

  • IChat screen sharing problem with AIM

    Hi,
I have two laptops - one is a MacBook and the other is a PowerBook. Both are running Leopard. At first, when I had tried using the screen sharing feature of iChat, it had worked flawlessly on both the Bonjour network as well as the AIM network.
Now, for some reason, I cannot get screen sharing to work using the AIM network. I am able to conduct text chats, audio chats and video chats, but no screen sharing over AIM. Screen sharing over the Bonjour network continues to work without a problem.
    Any advice?

For some reason ichat does not work when internet sharing is on.
Therefore that might be the problem with your screen sharing since you seem to not be able to get it to work (audio is part of the feature and if you have recently relocated you might not realize that internet sharing is on).
