Ichat, aim and -8 error

Question

I know this seems to have been asked 100s of times, but none of the posted solutions seem to work. Here is my setup:
* Macbook pro
* OSX 10.4.10
* ichat 3.1.8
* airport extreme w/ n
* my ISP is charter communications
* my computer IP is set to be the primary host (or DMZ), meaning ALL ports are open for my computer, and no firewall is on the computer
I have an AIM screenname (which seems like it might be part of the problem...), and I am unable to connect to others with an AOL acct. Skype works fine. iChat seems to work intermittently, more often not working than working. I am not sure about connecting with .mac users, since I don't know any. I can connect to the test server fine as well (the appleu3test01 or whatever it is). Additionally, it has worked at my office with people in another office, where neither of us can screw with the network settings, and it suddenly stopped working recently. Here is an error log for a connection between another computer w/ WinXP on my LAN and my macbook, but it seems to be the same as the others. Should I just use skype, and tell dozens of people I video conference with to use it instead of their program, or is there any chance of getting this working?

.mac users are no different than AIM users. Same
servers, same buddy lists. Apple worked out a deal to
let .mac users use their "@mac.com" as their AOL
screen name. Nothing more.
Hmm...I thought I had read somewhere that a lot of these problems started when AOL changed something on their servers, and it does not affect .mac to .mac ichats.
I'm amazed that you actually can report that you have
had successes with Win XP. I never have, even when
both behind the same firewalls on the same subnet,
although my Mac-to-Mac iChat sessions are pretty
solid unless when on business travel, a hotel's
internet connection is "challenged" (poor wireless
connectivity, limited (congested?) bandwidth,
inflexible enforcement of ports and NAT, etc.). I
will profess that the Win XP users didn't feel like
screwin' around trying to get it to work, and I can't
say that I blame them. It should just work without
having to do a gazillion tweaks. Unfortunately, it
doesn't.
Right. Which is why this is so frustrating. It worked PERFECTLY when I first got the macbook about a month ago, worked for a few weeks, then stopped.
Pay a visit to http://speedtest.net and see what your
upload and download speeds are. I would contend that
the the manual "1.5Mbps T1/LAN" is not always a
panacea; I have found that setting QT Streaming
Speeds not to exceed the smaller of speedtest's
numbers have cured bandwidth problems that I have
experienced (recall previous comment about challenged
internet connection). Although, I thought that error
8 was more of a port block (perhaps by the ISP
itself) issue than a throughput issue.
My DL/UL is 4800/480 kbs, so I don't think that is the problem. Also, skype works flawlessly.
So the next question would be, does Charter offer
VoIP or other SIP-like services (e.g., Vonage). And
if so, do you subscribe to any of those services?
People here have reported approaches/fixes in such
cases (whether they were using these optional
services or not) in the past, although I can't recall
what they are -- I'd have to search through this
forum to see.
It wouldn't surprise me if charter is blocking something...I'm moving in about 10 days, and am getting a different ISP, so hopefully that fixes things. I don't have VoIP or anything like that.
The problem seemed to start when I did a mac software upgrade, probably to 10.4.9. I'm not sure if ichat was upgraded then as well.
