IChat /Aim/.mac video

Aloha!
I just got my new iMac and am having trouble connecting with the video portion of iChat. I tried through AIM, then changed to .mac to try that...... I have read many posts and tried various suggestions. My son has been helping me walk through these different things, but to no avail. I have changed the Quicktime settiing, I have tried changing the port to 5191 and 443. My son thinks it may be my ISP provider, but they say they have no ports closed. I would appreciate any help. We finally got the error message to change and this is the log from that:

Video Conference User Report:

Hi Suefis,
Welcome to the  Discussions
The log itself does not suggest the ports are blocked by the ISP.
iChat works like this.
Logging on with the default 5190 port is on the TCP protocol
Some info for the Buddy List and file sending and some specific Text chats happen on the 5190 port on the UDP protocol.
When you send an A/V invite this goes out on port 5678 on the UDP Protocol.
If your Buddy sees this and accepts iChat moves to port 5060 on the UDP protocol.
At this point it contacts a server called SNATMAP run by Apple.
iChat tells this server which ports to use for vid in, vid out, Audio in and Audio out.
This server acts like and old fashioned telephone exchange where you dailed the operator and asked them to put the call though.
So this server then finds your Buddy and tells the iChat at that end which ports to use.
Then the connection is made and the server drops out and the 1-1 Vidio or Audio chat is Peer to Peer.
Your log contains the iChat ports.
This is where Error 8 gets difficult to pin down.
An Error 8 refers to all sorts of problems with ports and NAT.
So from the beginning.
The System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab needs the setting changed to 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN and iChat restarted to see this speed change.
The iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit needs to be set to NONE.
If the Mac Firewall is ON then the ports need to be set there.
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab
See here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_mactodo
If you have a routing modem or a router then the ports are most likely going to be needed to be opened or allowed there.
This is where NAT (Network Address Translation) can play a part.
Not all manufacturers do NAT the same way and you sometimes seem to get devices at either end that don't like each other.
If you have UPnP In at least one device at your end it can help get around this.
To say more we would need to know make and models or routers and modems you are using and what you have done to set them up as well as the info in the points above.

  • Communication error using iChat AIM with video

    I'm using a rev. B iMac G5 with firewire-attached iSight.
I can chat with audio (2-way) and video (1-way) to my sister on her iBook using iChat. She's behind a router with I have no idea which ports open/closed. My router has ports 5060, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403 for UDP and 5190, 5297, 5298 for both UPD and TCP open.
I want to be able to do this to the windows comp using AIM 5.9 behind the same router as the iBook.
When I try to send video to that, I get a "connection error" with these details:

  • IChat/AIM MAC/PC communication problem

I'm trying to get video chat working with my partner while she's away, but it's proving difficult. I see lots of others have had problems, but I can't find any that quite match ours. I have a new MacBook with installed webcam, and she has a PC laptop with Windows XP and a USB webcam, and we've both joined AIM. After a lot of effort, I managed to set it up so that we could see and talk to each other with AIM in different parts of the house using our wireless broadband. But it only worked if she invited me. If I invited her, it failed with a 'maybe it's a firewall' error message. I'm uncertain whether that's the problem as it didn't seem to make any difference with her Norton firewall turn off.
But then when she went abroad and we tried it again, we couldn't get it to work at all. She invited me to join a video chat, I accepted, but then got a message saying that she had declined (which she hadn't). Meanwhile she got a message saying there might be a firewall problem at my end. I'm baffled. Any suggestions much appreciated.
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
It is possible. It really depends how much time you want to spend at it.
The AIM application (5.9 NOT Triton) on the PC needs several steps anyway no matter who the Buddy is they are contacting.
They decided that each time the Mic and camrea are unplugged that it should go through a Tuning process, but also needs doing at first run/set up.
This sitre is good at decribing the Whole thing http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html
AT the PC end the XP Firewall blocks all non Microsoft apps by default. If an earlier version than Service Pack 2 then the Firewall has to be turned Off. At Service Pack 2 better control of the Firewall was added. This added the option to Enable other apps as Exceptions. (That's the Page 12 bit above).
    It is in simple terms.
Start > Control Panels > Firewall (Via the Security setting if required)
The click on the Exceptions tab.
    Add AIM as an Exeception
Make sure it is enabled back in the first window.
Enable UPnP as well if that is the way her Modem works in opening the ports.
In her modem (Or other Firewall) then port 1024 -500 plus the login port of 5190 should be opened.
Use UPnP if you have it as the ports are then only Open when the Applciation uses them.
    On the Mac end.
Preferably use UPnP in your Modem.
    If not open these ports
Same for the Firewall on the Mac if it is On.
AS said Earlier timewize and more certainty then Skype is a solution.

  • Multiple Accounts - AIM / .Mac / Google Talk (Jabber)

    Hello,
I am fairly new to all of this, and I have a question which I haven't really been able to answer by searching this site...
I have three chat / messenger accounts in iChat, AIM, .Mac and Google Talk (Jabbber).
Can anyone contact me on any of those accounts at the same time? Or do I have to be logged to to the relevant account for them to do that?
Also, I notice from the icon in the dock that, when I am logged on to either .Mac or AIM (indicated by a tick), there is also a tick by the Google account. Does this mean I am logged on to that at the same time?
Also, can .Mac send messages to AIM, and vice versa? Both types of accounts appear in each when you add buddies from the address book,
    Thanks
    Gareth

    HI Andre19,
That looks like a XP Firewall still On.

It could be the ports in their modem are not open for the AIM application.

  • Best Mac-to-Mac video chat (AIM or .Mac)

I have a Core Duo Mac mini w/ an iSight. My parents will be getting a Macbook or Macbook Pro.
I currently have a .Mac account. My question is, do my parents need to sign up for a .Mac account and pay $99 just to use iChat video converencing with me?
They have an AIM account already, can they just use that with iChat on their new Mac?
And for Mac-to-Mac video converencing, does it matter?

    Brian
Your parents can either use their existing AIM screen name, as suggested by the first respondent. Or they can take out a trial .mac account and the screen name will still work after the trial expires (but not the other .mac services).

  • Finaly: AIM (win) video-compatible to ichat

    Great news ....
Finaly AIM with it´s latest windows client (6.1.31.1) is videochat-compatible to our ichat since osx is updated to 10.4.9. I tested it with several buddies, all using latest aim windows client. I also made some tests inside my network (from iMac to pc and visa versa) ... what can I say: no problems at all anymore, no more aim 5.9 and stamp-like videos on windows-side.
    Greetings

    Hi Martin,
AIM 5.9 does seem to be more reliable for thaose people it works for in that it does allow calls both ways.
I am not sure that iChat is the one that has been one step behind. I would point to the fact the AIM still have a download page for it.
AIM and Apple did a deal to allow iChat to use the AIM service.
In the meatime AIM have brought out the Beta Trillian and then AIM 6.0.
As iChat is an AIM client it seems they have relied on AIM 5.9 being out there to say that agreement with Clients were being honoured.
James is also right that other solutions that are out there while not ebing as smooth or as pretty as iChat/AIM connection do actually work and are easier to set uo that the AIM - iChat link.
My experience with AIM 6.1.32.1 running on XP on my MacBook Pro is that it will only really connect to 10.4.9 on my G4/1Ghz Dual.
It will not even get a response on 10.3.9 (panther) and 10.4.8 is extremely hit and miss as to whether an invite will even appear and always times out after that.
I stayed around the iChat boards as I wanted to understand all the wquirks about how this works.
James porports another view that time is money and solutions need to take that in to consideration. It is something I don't always take account of myself when making an answer as I tend to answer with the belief that someone wants to make it work the way it says it does on the tin.
If your car is not working and you don't have time to fix it before work the Bus maybe a reasonable option.
Look how long it has taken Apple to get USB cams into iChat despite having Built-in USB cams in the Intels.
In this case Thinking Differently is not always an Apple Answer.
What that does say is that more work needs to be done.

  • Jabber and AIM/.Mac contacts in ONE window

I would like to have a single iChat window that combines the Jabber and AIM/.Mac buddies. That way I can log on to AIM directly from iChat (and use video/audio) and also be able to log on to google chat MSN via jabber gateways. I hate having two different windows for each buddy list.
I there a way of doing this with Leopard's iChat?

    Hi,
    I use several including GoogleTalk.
It is not about whether the server can do Audio or Video as Most Jabber Servers can not
iChat invokes it's A/V protocols whichever Buddy list it is in which do not use the same ports as any of the Buddy List's logins.
The A/V side is independent of the Text based side.
I have found that the Green icons show up.
This seems independent of whether the Jabber Server supports it.

  • IChat File Transfer/Video Chat won't work... :(

    Hi Everyone,
I am trying to get ichat to allow file transfers/video chatting on my Mac, I have a feeling that the setup through the routers that we have are not allowing it to function as it is constantly giving me errors. My set up is a Cable Modem hooked into a Netgear WGR614 v6 and then an ethernet wire running from that router to a Linksys WRT54G v8. I have the WRT54G set up with the following settings:
    IP: 192.168.1.136
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.1.1
Static DNS 1 and 2: Are my IP's DNS servers
    Static DNS 3 is blank
Local IP address is .199 with a subnet of 255.255.255.128
I have DHCP enabled starting at .200 with 30 users
My computer is also set up statically at port .233.
The Netgear WGR614 v6 is set up with the following settings:
    Get IP/DNS dynamically from ISP
DHCP Range from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.51. Router is on a subnet of 255.255.255.0 the linksys is set up statically to the Netgear
SO, this brings me to my issue, I am trying to get ichat file transfer/video to work, I have followed the instructions for setting up portforwarding from portforward.com for ichat on both the netgear and the linksys. On the linksys, i set the IP address to forward to as my computers (.233)
On the netgear, i set the ip address to forward to as 192.168.1.136 (the static IP of the linksys).
Anyway, I am hoping someone can point out what I am doing wrong as I am still getting this error: An AIM error has occurred. Unable to talk directly to your buddy. I am also getting this error: An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout.
My OS X firewall is off.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!!

    Hi,
I am not sure I have understood your Networking here.
You say the Netgear is getting an IP (Via DHCP) from the ISP.
You go onto say it is at 192.168.1.1
It issues IP addresses from 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.51 and the Linksys has an IP outside this range at 192.168.1.136
    Your computer is at 192.168.1.233
As both devices are using the 192.168.1.xxx group and doing DHCP (even with restricted groups) how does the computer know which one to connect to ?
You should be able to change the group that each device is using for it's own network (I would suggest the Netgear)
You should also turn Off DHCP (to the LAN) in the Netgear so it's own network (subnet) only goes as far as the Linksys.
Similarly in the Linksys make sure DHCP is Off or change the Mac to use Manually (Static) with DHCP.
Both devices can do UPnP found in the Administration tab in the Linksys and the WAN page of the Netgear.
Turn Off/disable all Port Forwarding in both devices.
It may also pay to copy across the Linksys and Computer the DNS server IPs from the Netgear.

  • Can iChat on Mac talk to iOS  FaceTime devices

I have Facetime on my iOS devices, as indeed many of my family and friends.
I also have installed FaceTime app on the iMac and I dont really like it.  It does seem to fit in well with the Aspect ratio of the Mac Display.  The contacts are in a black border etc. So I tend to use my iOS devices in FaceTime but feel that the mobile lack the control of the video.  I have not 'upgraded' my sofwate to Mountain Lion which seems very based on mobile devices and  iOS 6
As an old user of iChat in many versions I have client Buddy Lists which offered availability markers etc, even which in other Mac software applications for example Address Book.
Is it possible for a Mac based iChat to talk to iOS devices ?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages to me the user and/or my recipients.
Would upgrading to Mountain Lion provide a better FaceTime vs iChat experience.
I realise this is a highly subjective question but would welcome any views

    Hi,
Is it possible for a Mac based iChat to talk to iOS devices ?
    No.
Well,...  not iChat to FaceTime or Messages on the iOS device.
You could use AIM Express or a Jabber client app and at least Text chat.
    FaceTime.
The Lion version has the same Video controls to set the pic Landscape or Portrait as the Mountain LIon version does.  See Video Menu - you tend to have to be connected in a chat for it to go Dark)
FaceTime can chat (in Video only) to other Mac users using FaceTime or to iOS devices.
It cannot Video to Messages app (In iOS or the Mac Version)
Messages on the Mac in Mountain Lion
This adds the iMessaging ability to what is essentially the iChat app.
It uses the same iChat "Engine" if you like  and adds in the iOS iMessages account to the other AIM and Jabber or Yahoo IDs and Names you may be using already.
If using the iMessages Account to connect to Contacts then Messages will Invoke (Start up) FaceTime for you if you want to Video chat.
The former "iChat Names" still use Buddy Lists and can Video within Messages like iChat can.
    So...
Like iChat you cannot Video or Text chat from AIM to Jabber  (Cross Service) you cannot chat from your iMessage account to AIM or Jabber (or Yahoo)
The iMessage account allows you to text chat to those people you might be FaceTiming to at the moment.

  • IChat - AIM VideoChat does not carry audio

    Hi, all:
My brother and I tried to video-chat. My brother uses WinXPSP2+RTCAIM5.9 and I use PowerbookG4(1GHz, 764mb, 10.3.9, ichatAV2.1, iSight, all updates). His line is 6MB down and 700kb up, mine is 1.4MB down and 300kb up.
We successfully connect video chat. Though there is a problem. I can see and hear him, he can see me, but he cannot hear my voice.
We open certain ports described in Apple's documents, remove the router, kill firewall of XP and OSX, and yet no voice.
Voice indicator in iChat preference (Video) shows the microphone picks up my voice very well. I changed the microphone from iSight to internal, but no luck. Besides
we can video-chat on iVisit with no problem. So I think it is not a problem of microphone.
Is there any clue to solve the problem?
    Thank you very much.
    Tak

    Hello Tak,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This may sound strange, but several of my PC chat buddies normally keep their sound turned off. Does your brother have his sound card enabled, his speakers turned on, and his volume set?
If so, has he checked the AIM® Video IM - Frequently Asked Questions?
If the above do not correct his problems, he should test with others to see if his AIM 5.9 app works correctly with ANYONE. If not, he may have a bad download or install. I suggest that he download a fresh copy and reinstall using proper PC procedures.
I think these are the most likely possibilities, but this link has my other suggestions for Mac Video Chat with PCs.

  • IMing to non-ichat/aim pc users

Does anyone know of a good IM for talking to non ichat/aim pc users? I tried yahoo messenger and couldn't get the voice or video to work.

iChat has an Idle coloured blob for Buddies that are Available but have not touched anything on their keyboard for a while.
Other client offer the chance to distinguish between Away and Idle-Away buddies as well.
iChat can not do this last option even though it is part of the AIM Protocols (it's ignored rather than not implemented on the iChat end) But as it is part and parcel so to speak your Buddies with clients that can tell see you as not Idle if you just have the Away message up.
On other clients you can not call Away Buddies were as in iChat you can be called.

  • Ichat audio and video problem

my ichat audio and video don't work with any of my friends, no problems with a text chat, i'm using tiger and they all have leopard, all macs are up to date, i've tried messing around with the ports, firewall is off, internet sharing is off, i know a lot of people are having this problem, are there any answers to this that actually work, i'd appreciate any help

    Hi Ben
Welcome to the  Discussion Pages
Presumably you mean this Linksys is set to Not Block Pings on the WAN port (Or whatever phrase your device has) ?
I also presume that you have done the Quicktime Setting that Steve mentions above ?
I presume the Linksys is the modem as well and it is doing UPnP ?
At this stage I have two suggestions.
    1)
Shut down the computer and remove the Ethernet cable (modem or computer end does not matter) (Make sure it will not connect Wirelessly when restarted before hand)
    Restart the computer
    Restart iChat.
    Reconnect the Internet
    Log iChat in.
    2) Try a reinstall of the COMBO version of the 10.5.2 update
Both of these suggestions have been used in previous iChat's when other things have not worked and the set up appears OK on the surface.
    Also try
    3) Rebooting the router and a Modem if separate.
    4) In System Preferences > Network > Connection method > Advanced Button > DNS tab add the DNS servers of your ISP
DO them one at a time so you know which one works.

  • IChat 2.1 video to iChat 4.4

I have iChat 2.1 on my MacMini running OS 10.3.9. My friend has iChat 4.4 running on his OS 10.4. The video conferencing does not work. Is this ecause Mac didn't make the two compatable?

    Andy,
The newest version Apple has created for iChat is iChat 3. I have communicated with someone using iChat 3. So I can say for certain that they are compatible. However, I can only video chat with one person at a time, whereas someone with iChat 3 can video chat with multiple users. Now if you are using OS X 10.3.9 with iChat 2.1 you can check an earlier post titled "no response" and follow the directions Defcom(UK) gave me. It worked for me so I'd suggest giving it a shot.
