IChat AIM Problems withbanned users.

I was arbitrarily banned by an AIM room owner. I made a new AIM account, but iChat is saying that I'm banned, regardless of the user name / screen name. I am able to enter the rooms with AIM Instant Messanger, but not with iChat. Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks Ralph, but that's not it at all. I deleted everything to do with iChat, including the application itself. I also deleted ALL of my keychain passwords from AIM, as well as the signing certificate. Nothing has worked for me. I suspect there is another link somewhere in the system that has attached itself to iChat 4. Last night I even did a complete reinstall of OS X 10.5, then updated it 10.5.1. Time machine was on though. It still doesn't work. The Ban was lifted yesterday, and I had no problem getting into any of the chatrooms with AOL Instant Messenger. So something's up with iChat 4, at least on my system anyway. I could not find the file named: com.apple.ichat.aim.plist however. To better explain what happened, it goes like this. I had one screen name that was banned from an aim chat room. With iChat 4, none of my other screen names will work. They all say that I have been kicked out, and cannot rejoin. However, as I said earlier, AIM Messenger works just fine now. It's very strange, and I can only assume that something is wrong with another unknown file that is linked to iChat 4. Fortunately, the first time I deleted all the iChat files, it allowed me into the rooms, but only for a few seconds. Then an error dialog came up and said: your encryption link with "**** lol [email protected]" has been damaged, or broken, or something like that. So I assumed that that user was the hacker that broke my iChat. I have to believe at this time that something is wrong somewhere else in the system files that are linked to iChat 4. I could be wrong, but I've tried just about everything, except erasing my laptop drive, and reinstalling everything anew. So, I dunno?
Thanks.

  • IChat /AIM Problems

I have a new iMac with updated software. It connects to the internet via wireless Time Capsule connected to my router which is connected to my cable modem. When I attempt to do an AV chat with my PC friend (she uses AIM), when she calls me, she can hear and see me, but I neither hear nor see her. If I attempt to call her, I get an error message saying that I did not receive a response and no connection is made either way. Are there firewall issues on my end I need to adjust or is it something else?

    Hi
Has the PC end set up as per instructions? What version of AIM has PC end got?

    System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming>Streaming speed: 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN (or 1Mbps Cable)
iChat>Preferences>Video>Bandwidth limit: None (500kbps if Comcast, Road Runner or Veriozon FIOS ISPs)
    Restart iChat

  • IMing to non-ichat/aim pc users

Does anyone know of a good IM for talking to non ichat/aim pc users? I tried yahoo messenger and couldn't get the voice or video to work.

iChat has an Idle coloured blob for Buddies that are Available but have not touched anything on their keyboard for a while.
Other client offer the chance to distinguish between Away and Idle-Away buddies as well.
iChat can not do this last option even though it is part of the AIM Protocols (it's ignored rather than not implemented on the iChat end) But as it is part and parcel so to speak your Buddies with clients that can tell see you as not Idle if you just have the Away message up.
On other clients you can not call Away Buddies were as in iChat you can be called.

  • Ichat/aim/adium problems

when i sign in to ichat, aim, and adium, i stay logged in for a little while, but then it signs me off and doesn't tell me that i've been kicked off. it looks like i'm online but none of my friends can see me. there is a lag like this for a couple of minutes and then it finally tells me that the connection timed out if i try typing another message. this is very frustrating. i've tried reinstalling everything and it doesn't help. i have also tried changing the aim port to 443. does anyone have any insight?

    Hi,
Try turning Off the SSL option in iChat  (And in Adium if it has it).
iChat needs this manually reset if the Connection is lost to the SSL server at AIM  (It also goes down more frequently than the regular server).

  • Ultimate iChat connection problem

Just yesterday, iChat started refusing to connect to AIM for some reason. The connection continually timed out. Neither iChat, AIM proper, nor any other instant messaging client will connect to the AIM network. I tried changing both the AIM server, and the AIM port (specifically to 443) and there was no change. I deleted all the AIM plist files and some internet and network plist files, it didn't do anything. I tried rebooting, resetting my Airport base station, allowing the AIM port in the firewall, turning the firewall off, resetting my DSL box, restoring Airport to its factory settings, doing port mapping in the Airport admin utility, and reinstalling Tiger, none of that worked. Is there something else I haven't thought of that might work?

The message is the standard "connection could not be completed because it timed out." Resetting the password in the keychain didn't help, it doesn't work with other users on this computer, no one I know is having the same problem. I haven't been able to try it with another computer, but I'm getting a new laptop tomorrow so that might help. Strangely enough, I can get online fine with my cell phone, but AIM Express refuses to load on either Safari, Firefox, or Internet Explorer.

  • IChat login problem. Anyone know how to fix it?

I've got iChat 4 and it usually works just fine for me with my AIM account but for some reason today every time i try and log in it first appears like it's logged in successfully but doesn't show any buddies online when they are and then a few seconds later it starts connecting & disconnecting over and over until i get a iChat Connection Alert saying:
    Could not connect to AIM
you have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again.
I then wait for a while and try and log in again but the same thing keeps happening and i haven't the slightest idea how to stop this from happening.
Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?

At this stage there seems to be three levels of this problem.
    1) You have Logged in Too many times is normally solved by deleting com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist and restarting iChat
    2) The extreme is to have no displayed Buddy List despite looking like you are logged in. This require ichat to be Quit - Activity Monitor used to Force Quit iChatAgent as it does not quit with iChat - The deletion of both com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist and com.apple.iChatAgent.plist
    3) Anything else is sort of in between and should get away with just the double .plist deletion.
The .plists are in User/(your account)/Library/Preferences
    Restart iChat afterwards

  • IChat AIM and Ports

I can iChat using AIM screen names with other Mac's, but I can't with my father on his PC using AIM and his AIM screen name. I have read through many posts on this topic, but have merely succeeded in thoroughly confusing myself.
I have an iMac with OSx 10.5.7. It is on a wireless network using a Netgear WGR614 router. I am using iChat version 4. My father has a Windows XP computer. He is using a D-Links DI-624 router. His version of AIM is 6.9. I have asked him to turn off "Real Time," although I'm not quite sure that he has figured out how to do that yet (he just turned 80 years old).
Can I correctly assume that because I can iChat successfully with other Mac users that my router is properly configured and that the problem lies with my father's set up?
If the problem is with my father's set up, this Apple support document suggests that with respect to configuring his DI-624 router, all he needs to do is turn off UPnP. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1787. But I can't tell if the document applies only to Mac users of iChat or to Windows users of AIM who wish to chat with Mac users of iChat. My father is in the latter catergory.
If my father must configure his DI-624 router, which ports mucst he open/forward? The ones that I have seen listed that iChat users are suppose to open, the ones that AIM users are suppose to open, both?
Finally, the DI-624 seems to permit two methods to open ports: "Firewall Rules" and "port triggering". Which should I use?
    Thanks for all your help.
    John

    Hi
Which Netgear WGR 614 version do you have ?
Things don't really improve with this series until Version 9 (It's about the only dud for iChat Netgear there is.)
    It should be doing UPnP
DOS (Or SPI) and Ping Blocking in the WAN Set up page should both be Off.
If that D-Link does UPnP then use that.
    On his PC
He will need to do this Blue stuff in his Firewall
    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page12.html#_Service
    Simplefied version
Go to Start > Control Panels.
    Access the Firewall
    Click the Exceptions tab
Add AIM6.exe as the method suggests (Navigate to the Program Files > AIM blah blah)
Enable UPnP as well in the List.
Your Post suggests you have Read this
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
Turning Off Real Time supersedes this.
THE AIM FAQ and Pics about Real Time
If his does not do UPnP then use this page as well as the port 5190 listed he will need to enter as many as he can fro the Group 1024-5000
Unfortunately he can not add the Group and has to enter each port on one entry. (He will not get all the ports in the table - technically 4 should be enough)

  • IChat AIM got disconnected.

I was on my iChat aim today then it randomly said "iChat cannot connect with AIM user." I tried changing the port to 443 and nothing happened. This happens sometimes but I'm usually able to fix it but this time its not. All my other users are working but not this one. I tried putting the user that's disconnected into aim.com but it said "cannot log in due to the attempts to try logging in please try again later." I don't know what to do now. Please help.

I'm having this same problem. If i try to initiate an audio or video chat with a windows user it will fail, they will get an error message saying connection error or something along those lines. If a windows user tries to start an audio or video chat with me it will also fail and i would get this long error message...

  • Ichat, AIM, Adium frequently disconnect using Airport

Ichat, AIM, & Adium all frequently disconnect when using Airport. I use a Linksys Wireless Router with an Airport extreme card. When directly connected to the router, I have no problem. Using a PC with Windows XP, AIM operates fine. Safari and Firefox work fine, although sometimes I receive errors connecting to pages, when I try again no problem. Using any of the chat programs, I lose connection, but then can reconnect. After a few times, the AOL servers will prevent login.
I use COMCAST Cable internet service. My wireless router uses WEP encryption. I would switch to an AIrport Base station, but doubt it would correct the problem.
I have had this problem previously, but it corrected itself. now it is making chat programs unusable.
    Any ideas?

    Hi John,
By default Linksys units normally have the IP address of 192.168.1.1
Is this true for both your units or have you changed one of them ?
You may only find this out if you connect directly to the Modem one.
Also you have not said if only one of them is doing DHCP.
Example pic 3 on this page. This shows this device as getting it own contact IP address by DHCP (like from your ISP). Further down the page in the pic it shows the device is also acting as a DHCP server to the local net.
If your router is set up like this it could be getting an IP address usng DHCP like this device shows and that would tend to mean that the Modem is acting as a DHCP server as well.
If both devices still have the default IP addresses you will have conflicts, which probably explians the problems you have.

  • Can only have audio conversations with other iChat AV 3.0 users

so, since i updated my ancient powerbook to 10.4, i can no longer hold audio conversations with ANYONE other than people that have iChat AV. no one on aim, trillian, iChat under 3.0.
through some digging, ive come to the conclusion that it's because my computer is outdated, slowly dying and bugging up and will be resolved when i eventually purchase a macBook. BUT, i quick fix or some information to do so would be amazing.
    please help!
    stuart

so ive done some investigating. before having my cable modem up and running (speedstream 5400), i was using a wireless signal in the area. i don't know what it is, i just know it's slow haha. everything worked fine. once i switched to the faster modem, i can only chat with iChat AV 3.whatever users. it's not the operating system.
i just switched from MY cable modem back to the wireless slow signal and everything works perfectly. so, what's the deal?
    help please.

  • Another iChat AIM....

I'm using 10.6.4 on a MB Pro and have been trying to use iChat to VideoChat with a user running AIM (prob latest version) on Win7. He can see me as active on his buddy list as can I see him on mine, but requests for a chat go unanswered. iChat to iChat calls to another user work fine for video and audio so that would rule out my firewall.
I think it may be something to do with AIM no longer being compatible with iChat, so some specific questions:-
Is AIM currently compatible with iChat or does it need the AIM client at both ends? Ralph's faq list is dated 2005
If not, is Trillian a viable alternative on the PC or do both ends need to run Trillian (Mac and PC)
If using Trillian do we all need usernames for their service (Trillian Astra?) or are the AIM ones still useable?
I'm using 10.6.4 on a MB Pro Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
The info in the Users Tip have not changed in all that time.
Some things in the info do apply to earlier AIM Versions such as AIM 5.9
I have AIM 7. something on a BootCamp Partition and can Video from there to my iChat 4 computer (iChat 4.0.9)
I use UPnP in my router (it's a combined Route/Modem)
UPnP is enabled in the Windows Firewall as well as AIM being set as an Exception.
The Trillian Site has several versions for Windows
The one "on Sale" is the Pro version of 3.2
This one worked with iChat 3 and 4 to my certain knowledge using an AIM name.
I have not tested the version 4 or the Version 5 Beta (Nor the Mac version).
It is such a long time ago that I registered and paid for Trillian (Was on another PC that is no longer here) that I cannot remember if you also had to have a Trillian (Now Astra) name as well.
I did try to retrieve the same with Trillian back in 2009 but listing my, then, ISP's main account and several Sub accounts did not produce any results from their end.

  • How do I reinstall iChat, how do PC users video iChat with me, and should I just use skype?

    1. I deleted iChat awhile ago by mistake. I searched ichat in Macintosh HD, and the only result was iChat the application file, but its icon is a faded out IWeb icon. When I click on it, it just bounces on my dock, until it disappears and an error message pops up stating it quit unexpectedly. I tried dragging the result to my desktop then redragging it into my Applications folder, but the same thing still happens (faded out iWeb icon instead of iChat icon, bounces, quits, error message). I also tried installing the iChat AV (forgot which version) and iChat Update 1.0 Universal, both of which said I had to have 10.4. I have 10.5.8. Also, if this makes any difference, the current faded out iChat in my Applications folder says its version 4.0.9. I do not have my reinstall CD, and do not want to call support and have them send me one. Considering I bought my macbook in late 2008, and my warranty is up, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't help me anyways. I also do not know of anyone who has a mac so the sharing option can be crossed offed. Is there a downloadable version of iChat for 10.5. users?
    2. If I somehow managed to reinstall a working iChat, how would PC users connect to me and vide chat?
    3. Should I just use skype? Would i have to download anything? Is skype video chat free? What are the differences between iChat and skype, and which one is better?
    Thank you for your time!

    Hi,
    Reinstall Instructions
Be SURE to Download (Manually) and Install the COMBO version of the last Update to the OS you did as iChat will need to be Updated (Software Update will think it is already done and you need to Fool it)
    Re 2).
In theory it is just a question oif you using a valid AIM name in iChat
This could be one registered with AIM or one from @mac.com or MobileMe if paid for or a current trial.
In Practice it can need a bit of tweaking at both ends
They Need to allow the AIM App through the Windows firewall as an Exception (AS with any Non Microsoft app)
They may also need to turn off the "Real Time" option that does not work to iChat and effects A/V chats as well.  (It is Sending as you type). It will be in one of the Menus of their Budy List.
Post back for more if you get stuck.
    Re 3)
Skype does offer free Video Chat and some people resort to it when iChat to AIM does not work.
It is free (At present - and you only pay for the Connection to and from real phones)
Skype was bought by Microsoft within the last week and things may change at some point in the future.
    iChat has better Video
Audio depends on the capabilities of your Mac and their PC but is probably about equal.
Connection methods differ and iChat's Video and Audio Chats are technically more secure (you can in fact log out of the Buddy List as they adre Peer-to-Peer where as Skype uses a little bit of everyone's bandwidth (Between 40 and 100 other End Users)
    Other options are here
Video options are from 8 onwards
Mebeam is now called Koowy. (Video Chatting in a Web Browser using Flash)
    NOTES;
Google Do a Plug-in for Intels to allow you to use their Web Mail Page Chat Option
It can Conflict with Flash if you use more than one option.

  • "Rend Error" when sending image via iChat/AIM

On my brand new iMac aluminum, I am unable to send, and friends are unable to send, images via iChat AIM 3.1.8 (V445). When either of us try to send, we get the message "An undefined AIM error has occured. The server message was: Rend: Error"
I then spin around and use my old G4 iMac to send an image - no problem. My buddy is also able to send to me, no problem.
Both computers are connected to the same Linksys WRT54G router. When I searched for the term 'rend' only one thread came back which suggested to change the port from 5190 to 443. I did this and it didn't help.
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Craig,
In the Linksys set up pages you have Application and Gaming (Which is where I think you are talking about)
In there there are several options.
Port Forwarding, Port Triggering, DMZ (possibly UPnP Forwarding and QoS)
Disable any Port Forwarding or Port Triggering. DO not use the DMZ.
Save settings. (you should still have Web browsing and Mail abilities).
GO to the Administration tab on the top row.
    Enable UPnP.
    Save Settings.
UPnP allows multiple computers to use the same ports.
This way the Linksys can be left doing DHCP if you wish and it will not matter if your computer gets a new IP every now and then. Also the Ports are opened by the application and close after a timed period of non use.
You can limit the "Hops" to the number of devices the computer is from the Linksys (1 ?) to make it more secure.
On the main set up page you could limit the the DHCP range to the number of computers you have to prevent outside connections.
The ports you describe so far are only the TExt chatting and file sending ports

  • IChat, typical issue regarding users not showing up

I have two AIM accounts; I have one for Home/Friends etc and one for Work Friends & Co-workers to contact me at.
I put both AIM Names on either buddy list, recently they just stopped showing up on each others list on the same Mac running 10.5.8 and iChat 4
I did all the remove com.apple.ichat.aim or whatever plist files but it reverts to doing that ever so randomly.
it even happened under a different mac running snow leopard and that version of iChat. though that one seems to be abit more stable.
is there a fix or anything for it? atleast something solid..this is the first it has happened to me, just all of a sudden.....
    thanks.

    Hi,
The above pic is what the Messages pane shows when the View Menu > Messages item is changed to Text.
It will also show the Background Pic if you drag a Pic to the Chat window itself (or even to that white Space show in the pic)
There can be several reasons why a Buddy will not appear in the List
    1) You have chosen not to "Show Off Line Buddies" and they are Off Line.
    2) You have them "Blocked" or Not "Allowed" in the Accounts option in that pic then the Security tab.
    3) The same thing happens if they Block or use Allow Buddy list only or Allow Specific People and don't add you to the List involved (either the Buddy list of the Allow Specific People list)
    4) Variations on misspelling the Screen Name including:-
    a) Adding and AIM Name with @aim.com at the end.
    b) Adding an @Mac.com name as an AIM Name (And not including the @mac.com bit)
    c) Adding a MobileMe name as and AIM type (and not adding the @me.com bit)
    5) In ichat 4 and 5 only setting a Buddy list to Invisible. In iChat 5 this can be done to one Buddy List at a time.
    6) If talking about your own Screen Names showing in two places it could be a Buddy List is Not allowing Multiple Logins and one is being Logged out as the other signs in. (It has been some while since iChat allowed you to add your own Screen Name to your own Buddy list).
    7) Messing in another Mac User Account using the same iChat Info to Test Parental Controls can also make Buddies Disappear you you do not set the Parental Controls to Allow iChat before changing Mac User Accounts (it marks all none Allowed Buddies as Blocked which is a flag at the AIM server and will be seen that way in the main Mac User Account as in 2) above)
    Notes:
Your Screen Names and Passwords are held in the Keychain and are called back from there if you delete the .plists (well in this case com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist)
The Path to the .plists is Hard Drive/Users/(Your account)/Library/Preferences sometime written as Home Folder/Library/Preferences or ~/Library/Preferences
