IChat alerts

Suddenly my iChat 3.1 alerts have stopped working. I thought about tossing some preferences but I'm not sure which ones. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Same problem here. Tossing preferences did not help. Neither did repairing permissions. Here is what finally did:

I don't know who that guy is, but it did work. =) Also don't know if it will continue to be a problem after restart. Interesting...

How do I change the script for a voice iChat Alert for when a friend becomes unavailable?
Before I upgraded my system from Mac OS 10.4.11 to Mac OS 10.6.8 - I a had personalized the script for a voice iChat Alert when my husband logged off from work. I had the ichat voice warn me "OH, Crap! he's coming home now! Hurry clean house!" This personalized voice alert did not survive the upgrade. Now, I need step by step instructions to walk me through the process. Please help! I mis my machine shouting funny profane alerts.

    Hi,
In iChat 3 (OS 10.4.x) there was  Line at the Bottom of iChat > Preferences > Alerts that you could enter text to and it would speak that Text.
(you could set something against Individual Buddies as well).
This Setting is not there in iChat 4 or 5  (I presume iChat 6 as well).
Now it is possible to write AppleScripts that can Speak.
It is alos possible in iChat 4 upwards to link an AppleScript to an Action/Alert
At this point my lack of AppleScript knowledge lets me down on what to tell you to do next.
An Alternative would be to Record a sound with said alert.
Place this sound in your Home Folder/Library/Sounds
Then in the Alert opton for youe husband select the Log off option and link that Sound

  • IChat alerts not working

Hello. My alerts for iChat are not working. I looked at iChat preferences and the sound is on and set to the maximum volume. This problem started randomly - it has always worked before. Now it no longer makes a sound when sending or receiving messages. The sound works everywhere else on my computer.

Try starting GarageBand and then quitting it.
    Restart iChat.

  • OS X Lion - no iChat alerts sounds

Since upgrading to Lion, I have no audable sounds of any kind.  I not referring to video chats, send/Rec/login/logout.
And on the 2 machines I've upgraded, iChat does not save the window sizes.
Thankfully, neither are show stoppers however, it just ain;t right.
    Thanks in advance
    Banjo

    Umm,
I don't seem to be in this Thread until now.
iChat Menu > Preferences > Alerts
If these sounds play here then the issue is System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects and the Volume the Alerts are played there.
During day to day use the Alerts are played by the System Alerts settings.
    NOTE on Windows.
iChat 3, 4 and 5 save the size of the Outgoing Video Chat window (and it's Position) whereas the Incoming ones get placed in there default places (i.e same for Audio Chats)
If your Mac is a little low on the Processor size the Window may resize to the default it happens to be using.
Ideally most Intel Macs will use 640 X 480 and then play with the framerate.(starting at 30fps)
Around 15fps iChat will change to 480 X 320 which may increase the Frame rate when used.
Internet Speeds also has a bearing and there are two smaller sizes iChat can use to get the best out of the Connection.
    .plists
com.apple.ichat.plist does "hold" the Remembered Window positions in iChat 5 and below
However deleting it does return all other settings to default  (It will not lose the Buddy list)
iChat 6 is affected by the setting in System Preference > Genereal Pane that can be set to Remember open windows on Quit the next time it is launched (It affects all apps if set)
If the mentioned .plist is deleted iChat needs to be restarted.
com.apple.ichatAgent.plist holds the current Accounts that are logged in (or should be on iChat launch)
It also holds the iTunes Playing Status Mesage sort order for the info (Track, Artist, Album) and the Current Status Message (can be Messages if the Buddy list are set to Different statuses)
It also holds where you own Buddy Pic is on your system.
On occasions this has to be deleted the Computer should be restarted as iChatAgent starts up when the computer does.  (There is a partial login for Off Line IMs)

  • IChaT ALERT: could not connect...

I keep getting this error message when I try logging on to ichat:
    Could not connect to AIM
The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost.
I have checked all of my proxy settings in firewall and have even tried my aim and .mac account. My bonjour chat seems to be working fine and other than this my internet connection is strong.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know a quick fix?

  • IChat Alert Voice

    Hi-
I can't seem to find a way to change the voice used by iChat to announce various things.
    For example:
whenever I receive an instant message, iChat says "you have an instant message from xx"
I would like to change the voice that says that. I change the voice in System Preferences, to Cellos specifically, but iChat does not use that voice.
    Any ideas?

    hello
iChat uses the systems preferences for voice. whatever your system default voice is set too is what iChat uses. go to system preferences, select speech then click on the tab for speech to text. Change it there. if the change doesn't hold, repair permissions.

  • No sounds in only ichat

my ichat has no sound anymore. all other system sounds work fine. i restarted the computer and that didn't fix it. i checked settings in the system utilities. im on osx 10.6.7 and on a 2007 macbook pro. ichat is version 5.0.3. How can i get my ichat alert sounds back?!?!

    Hi,
Do the Alerts play in iChat itself ?
Is the System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects playing alerts out thpugh the correct output and is the volume high enough ?

  • How can you get custom sounds for when you sign into iChat?

When you sign into my friend's iChat account on her computer, a computer voice says "Sarah is awesome!", and she obviously custom made that, and I was wondering how you can make custom sounds like that when you sign in.
Thank you so much, I appreciate it!

It can be done two ways.
    1) as the other poster describes in making an Alert Sound and placing it in Users/(your account)/Library/Sounds and then selecting it in iChat > Preferences > Alerts fro the action you want.
    2) In Tiger/iChat 3 only
Go to the iChat Alert Preferences details above and there is an option to have iChat Speak a text phrase which you can type in the Phrase. (this is not there in iChat 4)

  • No osund in ichat

I cant seem to get any sound from ichat.
It has worked fine in the last. Bow when i send and receive messages I get nothing.
When i go in the ichat setting to make sure i have sounds assigned it plays fine there.

    Hi,
Go to System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects and make sure the Volume for the System Sounds (Effects) is loud enough. (iChat Alert sounds are played at this setting).
Several apps have their own Volume settings such as iTunes and then the Master Volume in the Sound System Preference (or controlled by the keyboard strokes) plays that louder still.
Many App play their Alerts as if they are the same as System Alerts and certainly at that Volume.
If you have turned this down to keep a Mail alert or other System notification at a lower volume then iChat's will be lower as well.
Depending on what you are using as an Alert there may be issues with the type/format of the sound file although this has been less of an issue since iChat 4

  • No audio in ichat

As soon as i connect to my GF who is using a windows computer through aim on ichat my i chat looses all sound, we can hear each other in the microphone/speakers of each others computers. I also loose the little messaging sounds in ichat on my computer does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi,
I must admit to noticing this myself recently. (I had not pinned it down to AIM on PC Buddies).
I think it may be to do with the AIM servers
    But try these:-
iChat Alerts sounds set in iChat > Preferences > Alerts are played by the computer as if they were System Alerts.
The control for the Volume of these is in System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects tab
I would check these two things first.
Alerts sounds can also be attributed to individual Buddies in the Buddy List by Clicking on them once to highlight and then doing a Get Info (Apple key and I together) to bring up their card and then using the Actions tab.
Sometimes an Individual setting will clash with the global settings and cause issues.
    Remove any Individual settings.
If this does not work delete com.apple.ichat.plist
This is in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences which you have to go to Manually as Spotlight and Find do not look in here.
This will delete all the settings set in the iChat Preferences such as the Menu Bar icon , Bubble colour, Font Style, Font Colour, Save Transcripts etc. as well as any saved Status Messages. It will also reset the Alerts to Defaults along with everything else.
Restarting iChat will recreate the .plist from Defaults.

  • How do i fix my ichat sounds?

my ichat stopped making all sounds about 2 weeks ago. I tried asking all the people i know how to fix it and they all told me to check the preferences to see if the sound is all the way up or if it is set to make the sound. Everything is as loud as it could be and all is set to work but it will not make any noise! PLEASE HELP!!!

    Hi,
With iChat Open go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Alerts.
By selecting different action in the top drop down  and clicking the Play Sound Line do you hear Sounds here ?
If you do then go to System Preference > Sound > Sound Effects.
Turn the Volume Up here.  (You may need to balance this against the Output Volume)
This works the same way as in iTunes you can turn the Volume up and also turn up the Output Volume Separately ("Doubly Loud" so to speak).
iChat Alerts are played as if they are System Alerts (Sound Effects) during it's normal use.
Test a Sound in iChat Preferences is played differently.

  • After 10.6.4 update, some audio not going through

After the 10.6.4 update I've been having trouble with some audio not going through the USB headset.
Things that refuse to go through the headset:
    * Empty trash noises
    * Skype notification noises
    * iChat alert noises
    Things that are working:
    * Coloquy
    * iTunes
I've tried toggling the System Preferences obviously. Unplugging speakers and USB headset and plugging back in a number of times (this seemed to fix some things, not others).
Anyone else having the same issue?
(Note to forum mods: you need to add 10.6.4 to your OS dropdown)

Reseting the PRAM has solved this problem.
