IChat and external webcam

We have been using iUSBCam (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iusbcam/) with our intel iMac's running OS X Leopard (10.5). This allowed us to change the video settings from within iChat to switch between the built-in isight camera and an external usb camera.
I just upgraded one of the iMac's to Snow Leopard and found out that iUSBCam is not support on Snow Leopard. Now I'm stuck. Does anyone have a solution for using iChat in Snow Leopard accessing an external USB webcam?
If I can't figure this out then I have to go back to Leopard 10.5. I'm not exactly sure how to do that either considering I have never downgraded. If anyone has suggestions on this, it would also be helpful.

I was able to use ichat>preferences>video/audio to switch from the two cameras. This was not possible before. Problem solved for now, as far as I can tell. I hope this helps someone.

Imac and external webcam

Hi all,
I have a G5 with an external isight.
I'm getting a new iMac soon.
My questions is...in my business the external cam is handy in that I can move it
anywhere. If I need to show a client a tool I'm working on I can do so.
With an iMac I have to move the whole computer around.
Soo for those times I need the flexibility of an external....
1. Is it possible?
2. How would I go about doing it if it is
3. Since this external iSight is starting to work when it wants to...
whats a good 3rd party web cam to use? I know there are none close to an iSight but...

Plenty of folks report using the FireWire external iSights with no real issues. Some have had issues with the microphone, but there is a fix for that, I think in the Mac mini Apple Discussions.
I have also seen folks recommend this one; http://ecamm.com/mac/imagewebcam/
Sometimes with USB webcams on iMacs with built in iSight cams, you have to fool the Mac to use the external cam. The Mac defaults to the internal, so you have to occupy the internal with another app, then open the app you want to use and the external should be available to choose. After choosing you shut down the other app.

I remember reading posts about putting an ichat symbol showing if your online on your site and the other was how to put a streaming webcam on a page. Can anyone point me in the right direction on finding these? Thanks

What type of external webcam works with iChat?

Is there a certain type of external webcam that works with iChat or can any webcam do the job?

Logitech Quickcam Vision pro for the Mac was recently released and I am using it with G5 QUAD and OS X 10.5.4 without problems. It is quite expensive compared to other cameras but it has a Zeiss lens and I think a much better picture. Works with evocam also. (evocam is a shareware program to do time lapse photos, or motion sensor movies and webcam stuff). I'm very happy with it.

External webcam not working with ichat

I just got a Macally webcam to get on ichat. Ichat recognizes the webcam in preferences, but when I try to get a screen view, it's just an infinite pic of my desktop. No camera. What should I do to fix this?

Yes, I got the download and installed it. I get the camera view now, but I'm still having problems. Can't video chat. It says there's an error. Here's the error details...

You control the camera for Skype from within Skype, so Skype must be running to running to make video work.

PC Webcam works with iChat and iSight

Before I purchase a web cam for my PC I need to know if it will work with iChat and iSight. Will I need to install any third party software for my mac or PC?

You will need to make a choice between AIM and Trillian
The AIM app is free but does not Audio only Chat to iChat users and has a very small pic.
Trillian costs $25 for the Pro version to Video chat but has a Bigger pic and can do full screen. The Basic version can alos Audio only chat to iChat users. Trillian can also join other IM services.
More info on setting up AIM on the PC http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html and the XP Service Pack 2 firewall. The Firewall will need to have Trillain enabled though it as well if you use that.

Decline in picture quality using external webcam

When video conferencing in iChat using, say, an Ipevo Point 2 View external webcam there's a very noticeable decline in picture quality, even on the local screen, as compared to using the same camera with the supplied Ipevo software, where the image is crystal clear. Of course that software has to be disabled in order for iChat to recognize the webcam. It matters when trying to review detailed prints over the internet. What am I up against here? Would it help if a better quality camera was installed? Interestingly the built-in iMac camera actually performs slightly better under the same circumstances.

IChat, Skype & Yahoo webcam not working?

Hello,
A few days ago I updated my Macbook Pro as it had some small updates to run. Before the updates, my built in webcam and external Microsoft LifeCam both worked with all three applications (iChat, Skype & Yahoo). After the updates, only my built-in webcam would work. Later that day, after me playing around (with no experience) I lost all webcams, built-in and external to all three applications.
Today, after turning my Macbook Pro on my iChat works with both webcam (don't ask how I got this to happen).
But...
Yahoo says "video source - none" to both webcams
and skype says "no video camera connected"
Can anyone please provide assistance?

Hi,
Welcome to the  Discussions
First of all go to the Applications/Utilities folder.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the Hard Drive in the list on th left
Select the First Aid tab
Hit the Repair Permission Button near the bottom
Ignore the messages about ACLs
Then restart the computer and do a PRAM reset
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down APPLE(or ⌘ )ALT(⌥)+PR Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
Try these two first and come back to us.

Ichat not recognising webcam

I'm new to ichat and have been trying to get a video chat going with a buddy. I have an external logitech USB webcam which works fine except ichat doesn't see it and says there is no camera connected. Is there a setting I am missing?
Also my buddy is always listed as being offline so I can't even start and audio chat. He has called me and we have achived audio while he is still 'offline'. He is using an @mac address and I am AIM does that make a difference?

Also if your Buddy is set to Invisible he will appear Off line.
There are variations also if you have misspelled his Screen Name or he does not have you in his Buddy List and use the Buddy List Only setting in iChat > Preferences > Accounts Security.

Macintosh: Flash Player does not recognize external webcam

Hi,
the Adobe Flashplayer does not recognize an external webcam on my iMac. When I open Settings and try to choose a camera, it offers:
DV Video
IIDC FirWire Video
USB Video Class Video
The last entry activates the built-in iSight camera, but not the Logitech Camera which is connected via USB. If I choose one of the other options, the picture freezes, but it does not activate the external Logitech cam.
The Computer recognizes the Logitech Cam alright, it works fine with other apps (Skype, iChat). Does anyone have an idea what can be the problem?

I've been trying to work through similar problems, as have many other Mac users from what it looks like. Here's a quote from a post I found in Apple's forum:
My Logictech 9000 doesn't show up in the Flash video source dropdown for me either. Selecting USB camera just selects the iSight.
However, I did find a workaround: it seems to choose the first available usb webcam, which is typically the built-in iSight. If you have a mac mini with no built-in iSight, it uses the external camera by default. For my MacBook, I found the trick was to make the iSight busy by opening Photo Booth first, then opening the flash chat page. That causes the flash player to find and use the external USB webcam.
Note: your webcam probably has to support the new standard USB Video plug-and-play protocol for this to work, and perhaps only on Leopard.

External webcams -- do any work with built-in isight?

I have an intel Macbook with the built-in isight camera. I'd like to be able to use an external web cam -- but I can't get any to work -- the machine simply ignores them.
Can anyone tell me which, if any, external cams have worked with this setup?
And for those who may ask -- the isight works fine, but I'd like the flexibility of having a cam on a cord so I can point it around the room without have to move the entire laptop.

macam is not required for your XBox 360 Live webcam (or any other UVC webcam) when used with Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later. You can uninstall it from your 10.4.11 Mac.
If you have not recently done so, shut down your Mac and do a cold boot (not merely a "Restart.") If restarting your Mac does not correct the problem, try all suggestions related to built-in iSight from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
(You can use the suggestions for your webcam because both it and built-in iSight are USB cams.)
If your ONLY problem is with one particular app that is supposed to use a webcam, you may simply need to reinstall that one app.
However, if the testing suggested there shows that your webcam problem occurs in all apps in more than one user account, the reset suggested there may restore proper webcam function.
However, if your XBox 360 Live webcam still does not work after carefully following all relevant suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article but it does show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, your problem may be with your Mac OS. Try applying the 10.4.11 Combo Update using the following process:
• Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
• Download and install OS X 10.4.11(Intel) Combo Update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
(PPC Mac users should use http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170)
• Immediately after the restart that completes the update, repair permisssions again.
If necessary, use the suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 again after applying the Combo Update to determine if the symptoms are the same.

IChat and Final Cut Pro

So I have about an eight year-old Sony TRV 330 camcorder and am desperate to transfer old tapes to iMac - got rid of old Windows Vista to get an iMac that'd make this possible. Hooked it up dozens of times (firewire/IEEE 1394, camera) opened iMovie 08 and nothing - it always defaults to built-in iChat camera. Read up on line and it was recommended to try using iMovie 06 to transfer footage, then to export to iMovie 08. Downloaded 06, still the same. Procured Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, hooked up firewire, nothing - not even iChat camera popped up in capture screen, although I noticed audio input channels were moving with the present audio in the room.
What am I missing? From what I've read, this is not an impossible task. How come my computer(s) do not seem to be able to even detect the camera? The obvious answer is there is something wrong with firewire and/or camera, but I know both work because I tried them on the very old laptop of a friend of mine (which she got rid of days ago) and all I did was plug it all in and footage started playing on iMovie capture screen.
Also tried Quicktime Pro, same thing - iChat, that green light, my mug on screen.
What am I missing? Again, I know firewire works, as does camera. Again, when in Log and Capture, it always defaults to iChat, which I cannot seem to disable and, even so, the computer doesn't seem to be recognizing the camera. Again, I understand the camera is not technically compatible and well, outdated, but again, others seem to have had much success with the same mix of iMac, camera model and FCP.
I am thinking, even with a brand-new HD camera, it will still default to the bloody built-in iChat camera (despite changing setting on iChat says "Automatically open iChat when external camera is turned on" to OFF).
Can't tell you how much this is needed. Thanks so much in advance.
