IChat and Internet Sharing

Ok, so I know this is a "feature" and not a bug. When Internet Sharing is turned on audio and video chat does not work.
It is frustrating that this problem has existed for so long and Apple has even acknowledged it in a tech note(Article: TA25128).
What I don't understand is if this isn't easily fixed why at the very least does ichat not check for this and at least popup a warning that internet sharing is turned on and voice/video chat will not work when it is turned on???

Hi,
I understand the issue.
However I feel an answer would drift off into Speculation about Apple or an Apple Product which is against the Terms of Use of these boards.
There is no work-around.
I can only suggest this

  • IChat and Internet Sharing conflict

It seems that if I turn on Internet Sharing then I cannot make a Video connection.
I have tested this with iChat Test ([email protected]) and it is a solid bug.

    Update.
It has been known for a long time that iChat does not like it if it can see two networks.
    Some versions are:
Being connected by WiFi and Ethernet to the same router.
A firewire link to another computer.
Two DHCP Servers on a LAN.
VPN networks (Such as created by Parallels)
Apps like Parallels sharing the Mac's IP
And therefore turning on Internet Sharing falls into this area.
It is just more clear in Leopard that this is the issue in some cases.
Sorting out a LAN can be the first step in sorting issues around this area.

  • Error message about firewall and internet sharing

hello all i have a question regarding the use of firewall and internet sharing.
I have a PMG5 connected to internet through Airport. I've linked an Xbox 360 via the built-in ethernet port in order to access Xbox Live. I had to open specific UDP ports on the OS X firewall but it now works fine. However, in the Sharing Preference Pane, Internet Tab, i still get an error message saying that my Internet Sharing is disturbed by the settings of the firewall and sharing services, it says that i did not activate "personal web sharing" in the first two tabs...but i DID ! And there's no way to get rid of this error message.
I know I know some may consider it's not a real problem because it's just an error message while the connection actually works fine but well, I tend to hate error messages when they're not supposed to show up. So if anyone know the answer, thanks in advance...
    Good day to everyone
    Vince, Paris...

sorry about the delay in replying, was kinda busy
well trashing the pref files was useless and i tried with another user, same thing. As for the second opinion, the problem was not about which port was used cause as i said the connection sharing works fine and anyway it was the correct port that was checked, it's just that i get an error message while there is no apparent error and everything works fine, i'm told that personal web sharing is not enabled but it is...
Anyway as i said, it's probably not a real matter, as long as it works...which brings me to another thing. I've created a special protocol in the firewall to enable a proper dialog with the xbox. it's basically the same thing you do for ichat AV when you have video connection problems, you track down the concerned UDP port using terminal, you allow traffic and all... The protocol for the xbox worked great for some days, but now it seems it's not enough, the game set keeps trying on another port and i constantly have to update the protocol or deactivate the firewall...and enabling back all UDP traffic is not enough to solve it.
In a way i think everything is linked, the initial error message when everything was fine and the current trouble. Any idea?
    thanks

  • Help with LTE and Internet Sharing for BUIlD Lumia...

    Nokia,
I received the Lumia 920 when I was at BUILD 2 weeks ago. I followed the instructions and the phone mostly works on AT&T. I had a 900 so I assumed my LTE and Internet Sharing plan would easily transfer. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. I called AT&T gave them my IMEI number but it's not in their system and is not recognized as a Lumia 920. Because this is not an "AT&T phone" they wouldn't do much more to help. My data connection only ever shows 4G, never LTE as my 900 does and I cannot enable Internet Sharing even though it's on my data plan. I believe this is all controlled by the IMEI number.
Is there anything Nokia can do to help us? I can't imagine I'm the only one having this problem! I'm going to try again to see if I can get the issue escalated and maybe they can force the IMEI number to be recognized as a 920.
    Thanks!

Sorry I never came back to update. The fix, as has been noted already, is to make sure AT&T has your IMEI as another 920 or your old 900 so that you get LTE (which appears as "4G"). Then, in the Nokia Access Point config setting (under System Config), make sure LTE2 is selected, then install an additional keyboard (I tried both Spanish and Chinese). This will force an OTA update that seems to enable Internet Sharing. I had to redo it a second time when I updated my Nokia Access Point app last week, but I just re-installed a NEW keyboard and got Internet Sharing back. It hasn't gone away since, contrary to what others have experienced. For more info (and where I found the fix) see this XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971997

  • Airport and internet sharing turns off by itself

Hi everyone, I have an imac that I purchased earlier this year, and I use internet sharing to get internet for my ipod touch. Until a few months ago, this worked fine but now airport and internet sharing turn off every time I restart the computer and I have to turn both back on every time. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or know hot to fix it?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Download and install the v10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
One of the "fixes" includes: - compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • OSX 10.6.8 and Internet Sharing to Ethernet

I am trying to set up Internet Sharing so that I can connect my old MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 via ethernet to another device - I'm trying with xbox360 and Sony Blu Ray (BPD-S185) (for diversity of devices - I used to have it working on my xbox, but really want it working with the blu ray player but the network status feedback is better for problem solving on the xbox!).
I have my MBP connected to my home network over Airport which has the following details:
    - IP: 192.168.1.5
    - Router IP: 192.168.1.1
I have then enabled Internet Sharing through System Preferences to share my Airport connection to my Ethernet connection.
I have the following Ethernet settings:
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP with manual address
    - (Ethernet) IP address: 192.168.2.1
    - Subnet Mask: (blank - not user accessable, changes to 255.255.255.0 when xbox turned on)
    - Router: (blank - not user accessable)
    - DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
    - Search Domains: (left blank)
On the xbox I've set the network settings to:
    - IP: 192.168.2.2
    - Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    - Gateway: 192.168.2.1
    - Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
    - Secondary DNS: 192.168.2.1
When I then select 'Test my Xbox Live Connection'  it takes a while, the Network status shows 'Connected', however The Internet Failed.  I am informed that the 'Test Failed' and 'more information' tells me I have an 'Internet Error' with the following Status codes:
    W: 0000-000B
    X: 0000-000D
    Y: 0000-0000
    Z: 0000-0000
    ID0004-000
    L: 0015-10F1
    Q: 8007-0435
    T: Wired
    A: 192.168.2.2/255.255.255.0
    G: 192.168.2.1
    D: 192.168.1.1/192.168.2.1
So, it looks as though the problem lies with the MBP and internet sharing on OSX.  I have extra suspicions that this is the problem, as connecting my Blu Ray player to my MBP via ethernet I also get a successful connection to the network, but no internet access.
Pleeeeease can someone help?!?!  This is driving me nuts - a couple of years ago I had internet sharing working to let my xbox connect to the internet, so what's happened in the last few years to mean this won't work?

If you want to back it up there, use the Disk Utility to create a disk image of it.
If you want to import its contents to iMovie, iTunes, or elsewhere, use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on it to a different format.

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • Video Chatting and Internet Sharing at the same time.

Does anyone know why video chat communication cannot be established while internet sharing, or how to remedy this problem by (what I imagine would be) opening/closing/redirecting a few ports?
    More specifically:
I share my ethernet connection through my airport connection to my iphone with the ip host/client scheme of 10.10.0.1/10.10.0.2.
If I don't turn internet sharing off, a video chat connection cannot be established.

Would you want any phone call due to come to you to go to both your landline and your mobile/cell phone particularly if you did not have both together ?
It is mostly about the specific needs of iChat needing to be able to place the computer in a specific place compared to the rest of the Internet.
If you have your Cell phone divert to your Home phone or vice versa how do you know it has also not been answered ?
More to the point how do you know that someone answering a call you have made to them has not been answered by someone else ?
In practice you know only one phone can be answered because of the mechanisms put in place that allows you to make the link between cell and Landline.
It is same for the process used to connect iChat to an iChat Buddy. It makes sure the Network has been set up correctly and is secure.
It is less about making two connections to the internet in the belief it will be twice as fast.
(Check a Download in a web Browser and see if it is really any faster with two connections or if Web Browsing is any faster.)

  • Yosemite and Internet Sharing

My internet sharing is not working since I upgraded to Yosemite. When I switch on sharing and try to share my ethernet internet connection via wifi my iPhone 5s is not able to even see the Wifi network that should have been created. I have tried switching the Firewall off but my phone does not even
This used to work perfectly when I was on Mavericks.

    Hi,
If your sister is on 10.5.x there is a "known issue" with Internet Sharing if it is On (even if nothing is attached as it were) and iChat.
The upshot is in OS 10.5.x Internet Sharing has to be Off.
If it is On because of Parallels then the two VPNs that are also created need also turning Off in System Preferences > Network and Parallels told to gets it's Own IP from the Routing device (Which she of course does not have).
What happens is Internet Sharing invokes the AMc to be a router and issues IPs to the devices connected.
This is turn provide s route to the Internet.
Unfortunately in Leopard (10.5.x) iChat can see this route to the Internet even if it is a WiFi able Mobile phone.
iChat cannot resolve tow connection to the Internet.

  • Open DNS and internet sharing

I am seeing strange behavior, and wondering if anyone has a thought about what is going on.
I am at a hotel with fast internet service over ethernet, but, for whatever reason, DNS seems very slow if I use DHCP to connect (timeouts of 5-10 secs to get to a new site). If I switch to DHCP with fixed DNS, and use the Open DNS servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) the latency issues go away.
The interesting thing is that I am sharing the internet connection over Airport to my wife's computer (she connecting thru DHCP). If I use a fixed DNS for MY computer, then her computer cannot connect thru internet sharing. But if I use the (slow) DHCP connection, then she can connect through mine. I have not tried setting up her computer with a fixed DNS, as she really doesn't like me to change settings on her computer
Is this a known limitation of internet sharing, or is there something I should know?
    TIA

In more detail, if my ethernet (the computer that is doing the sharing), is set up with Configure: Using DHCP, and DNS Server: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 (in Network Panel for Ethernet), then the computer connecting thru Internet Sharing in Sharing Panel is not able to access some or all resources thru http (ie, pages fail to load, or do not fully load).
However, if I clear the DNS Server part in the Network Panel, thereby using the the DNS Servers supplied by the hotel, then my computer's connection to the internet is slower, with long waits (presumably due to a slow DNS server), but computers accessing the internet via Airport thru my shared connection are able to browse the internet successfully.
I suspect that when I have a fixed DNS server in my computer, that fact is not broadcast to computers using the shared connection. But I am not an expert in TCP/IP, and may well be confused about how DHCP, DNS, and Apple's Internet Sharing work together.
Thanks for any ideas you have

  • Remote App and Internet Sharing Problem

Ok so basically heres the setup we have, we have one of the recent iMacs, a Macbook, and 3 PC's, one running XP and the other 2 Vista. All of these computers are on a network together. All our music is on one of the Vista PC's, called "SERVER". This PC is connected to the speaker system, so is what we use for music.
Now I've been trying to use an iPod Touch we have (most recent firmware 2.2, and most recent Remote app version.) and the remote app to control the itunes on this PC. This is not an issue when the iPod is connected to the Wifi the router itself provides (its one of those wireless routers), but when I switch the Wifi the iPod is using to the Wifi provided by the iMac using internet sharing, it suddenly can't find the library anymore. Internet (safari) still works fine from the ipod when connected to this Wifi point.
My guess is that because the iMac using internet sharing seems to act more like a router than a wireless access point (allocating its own IP adresses ect..), the iPod thinks its on a different wireless network, and thus cant see the itunes library. Obviously the iMac is connected to the router directly by ethernet, if I hadnt mentioned that.
So, my question is, can I fix this ?
Is there any way to make the internet sharing mac behave like a wireless access point and not like a router ?
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou.

asuming you mean internet sharing as in you connect adhoc to 1 computer using wifi and the rest of the network is wired
problems is the middle name of adhoc wifi though cause everybody problems imho
and wifi routers are soo cheap most people don't bother
even if internet sharing is used remote app should still work if not connecting adhoc at least it's working for me right now
with a setup of many computers 1 wifi router
1 computer sharing internet using an usb 3g modem
remote app works with all my computers and my appletv

  • AT&T microcell and internet sharing

I have an Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem, with an iMac 10.6 connected though the Airport. I just got an AT&T microcell which normally connects to the Airport ethernet port giving me better iPhone calling. I want to instead connect the microcell to the iMac ethernet with internet sharing enabled, through this ethernet port. The microcell doesn't like this, ethernet connection light just blinks and the network cp ethernet port says Self-Assigned IP. Can I make this configuration work somehow?

It won't work that way. The Microcell needs a wired connection all the way back to the router.

  • Airport Roaming Network and Internet Sharing

Dear Esteemed Experts (Tesserax et. al):
Thanks to you, I have successfully set up TC and 2 Airport Express N in a roaming network (plugged to Ethernet but using the same name and protocol) using 802.11n (b/g compatible) radio mode. It's working well, except a few blind spots to cover.
If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
Also, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk? If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
    Thanks
    Aghoo

If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
If it is connected via Ethernet it will have no direct affect on the performance of the 802.11n network.
lso, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk?
Internet sharing has nothing to do with joining a wireless network. If you want your iMac to join the wireless network, just go to the AirPort menu and select the network that you want to join.
If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
AirPort Utility is only for managing Apple's base stations.

  • Airport Express, Leopard and Internet Sharing

I have my internet connection running directly to my iMac's ethernet connection and I use the Internet Sharing option to share my connection with computers. I had been using my Airport Express just to connect to my iMac for Airtunes. My Airport Express has stopped working and is not located unless I shut off Internet Sharing, but if I turn that off, it will not let me set the Airport Express to connect to an existing network - I guess because the network does not exist because I shut it off to configure the Airport Express. This is driving me crazy - any thoughts?

Interestingly, it works again. To initially configure the Airport Express, I had to shut off internet sharing. I configured the Airport Express (I did a hard reset to clear everything out) using the Airport Utility and set it to join an existing network. Of course my network did not show up since I had shut internet sharing off, but I manually typed in the name and password that I had already set for the internet sharing. I also put in a name and password for the base station, but this isn't required.
Then I hit update and right when it says that the configuration has been changed and it is waiting for the Airport Express to restart, I turned internet sharing back on. I waited and after flashing yellow for a while it connected. I unplugged it and plugged it back in to make sure it was fully configured and it works. I have found in the past the unplugging and plugging back in solves a lot of problems too.
Now that it is all set up, I can see and reconfigure the Airport Express in the Airport Utility even when internet sharing is on.
    Hope this helps.
