IChat and Macbook sleeping....

Hi,
Quick question.
Situation on Macbook
1)-I am connected to iChat (showing available)
2)- I have "never put the computer to sleep" selected Pref>enersav
3) -I have "Put display to sleep after 15minutes)
4)- I have put the HD to sleep when possible
5) - Ring when receiving invitation (iChat pref)
After 15 minutes of non usage, the screen goes black (normal).
Am I still showing Available to other users? If so would I hear the ring when someone invites me?
Thanks
frederic

  • Connecting battery = MacBook goes dark and to sleep

I have a black Macbook 2.4 GHz. It was purchased refurb from the Apple store site and has recently exhibitted some strange behavior surrounding the battery. Sometimes the screen just goes dark and the MacBook goes to sleep. Usually a restart corrects the issue.
Tonight, it's doing it all the time. I came home and opened the MacBook (it had been sleeping) and within a minute the screen went dark as if the brightness was turned all the way off and then it went to sleep. I finally got it shut down and the long and short of it is that it works fine with just the power adapter plugged in, but as soon as I connect a battery the screen goes dark and the MacBook sleeps. My initial thought was bad battery but I tried another known working battery from the same model MacBook and the same thing happened. As soon as the contacts touch, dark screen and sleep.
I've reset the SMC twice, zapped the PRAM and even repaired the disk permissions just for fun.
Luckily, I'm under AppleCare but can't really get to an Apple Store (or even find the time to spend on the phone) until Monday so I thought I'd post here to get some guesses. My thought is logic board, because, well, what else could it be!
Thanks in advance for any help or even wild speculation!

Same behavior continues once battery has been removed and macbook is running off the power adapter.

  • Updated Macbook to 10.5.8 and now sleep does not work?

I have updated my Macbook to 10.5.8 from 10.5.4 and now when I choose "sleep" it shuts down every time and ignores sleep mode
Anyone have an idea why it is doing this. Quite annoying..

now I notice my Mac is showing me the restart choices asking me if I want to restart or make it sleep every 5 minutes or so? First it shows as like on top of the screen with shadowed corners (like expose) and then centers towards the middle of the screen.
Is this a Mac virus or someone installed something on my Mac or?

  • I have a year old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi.  No problem with the Macbook and iPad.  A lot of people seem to have the same problem.  What's the solution?

I have a year-old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi from  Airport Express.  No problem with the Macbook or my iPad.  It seems a lot Mac users are having the same problem.  Is there a solution?  Does Apple have a solution?

    Sometimes there are problems.
Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
I repair permissions at least once a month....
The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • How can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

how can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

If the machine is asleep, lid closed, and you plug in to an external monitor and an external USB keyboard, the machine will wake, anbd reconfigure the screen resolution for the external monitor, Once it has made this configuration change, you can open the lid and it will continue to address only the external monitor.  At least that's how my early MacBook Pro unibody 13" works. It seems to run a bit cooler this way. It gets quite toasty with the lid closed while doing anything demanding and you are more likely to hear the fan come on.  I have not seen any temps that would cause alarm, but I do get a high speed (6000 rpm), noisy fan sometimes with the lid closed, .
If you operate in the open-lid, external monitor only mode, if you deactivate the monitor for any reason, when it reactivates it will be running both screens, with all the navigation hassles this entails, so I generally set it not to deactivate the screen when in this mode.
Thus I agree with those who say that some of the cooling air is drawn in around the keyboard, the difference in cooling performance is observable.  If you activate istat pro, get the computer hot running in clamshell mode, and open the lid, you can watch the CPU temp drop by a few degrees C within a couple minutes.  It isn't a huge difference, but enough the lower the fan speeds.

  • Help getting macbook ichat and ipad2 messages talking

I have a 6 yr old Macbook Pro with 10.6.8 my wife has an ipad 2. We can not seem to connect using ichat....any help would be appreciated.

    HI,
iChat 5 in OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) can send text Messages to an iPad in a Web Browser that is logged in to AIM Express.
You may also find that there is a iPad (mobile) app from AIM that you can also get (I don't have an iPad so I am not that up on Apps)
My MacBook Pro is  Version 1,1 from 2007 and is the "first" MacBook Pro (essentially the Intel version of a PowerBook)
It cannot run Lion (or Mountain Lion) which means I cannot run Message (beta or full version) on it.
Messages though, can send iMessages to the Mac that has Messages app
(Basically iMessages to connect to iOS devices that has been "bolted on" to iChat and then the app is given a new name)
    To restate.
You should have a couple of option to use AIM in some form on the iPad
Then you can both use AIM names (Includes @mac.com name in iChat 5) and you should be able to Text chat.
    NOTES
iCloud issued @Me.com names will not work in iChat 5
iCloud started with Lion and in iChat 6 there is a dual Login to both me.com and AIM that allows AIM to "See" the password.
iChat 5 (or earlier) does not do this login to Me.com so the password cannot be verified by the AIM servers.
You will probably find the same with iCloud @me.com name in a Browser or any AIM app for iOS devices.

    Hi,
    iChat 6 ?
I have seen one post that suggests the the Connection Doctor (VIdeo Menu) says in the capabilities tab that the AIR will not do Multiway Video or Audio chats.
I am not sure how true this is as iChat 4 and 5 can.
Much earlier Mac computers such as G4 signle Processors do have this issue.  I would not have expected it with an Intel Processor.
File Transfers can be dependent on the Port used being open in your router (As can Video and Audio chats)
Screen Sharing requires that you use UPnP to open ports in the router (As well as turning it On in the vidoe Menu).
If you could be more precise I could match my answers to your questions.
It is late where I am and it will be about 20 hours before I read any reply.

  • Iphone and ipad can find network, iMac and macbook 10.8.2 cannot

Had a network fault. When fault was fixed, ipad/iphone & Dell studio xps laptop reconnected automatically. Imac 2012 and macbook 2010, 10.8.3, can see network but not connect automatically. Tried connecting to network and get message connection timeout has occurred.
    Got connection by;
    Open Network preferences
    Join other network
enter network name select - Security wpa2 personal
    enter network password
However - I need to do this after every sleep/reboot - is there a fix for this?
PS - I noted that I had previously been on WEP security setting and had real problems connecting to external devices consistently, such as epson wireless printer BX935FWD, and Western Digital My Book Live Duo. Since moving onto WPA2, these connection now work consistently, but macbook and imac always need to be forced to connect to network, in manner described above
Does anyone share a similar problem/managed to resolve network issues? - very frustrating.....must be an OSX issue as all other devices connect without issue.

I've managed to download 10.8.2 for my MBP Retina 13.3" but when I try and install I'm told that none of my discs are suitable i.e. Internal solid state drive with 370 GB available, or attached thunderbolt drive.   Meanwhile my iPhoto won't work. This has arisen because I migrated from an older MBP which was already running 10.8.2 and had latest iPhoto onto a factory fresh 10.8.1 machine.

  • How do I reset iChat and Facetime on an Air so I can  basically start fresh?

How do I reset iChat and Facetime on my Air.  When I bought it we had everything on my husbands MacBook put on the Air.  All the iChat and Facetime setting are his so the Air and MacBook won't iChat or Facetime with each other.

Remove their preference files in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Remove any related folder in /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  Relaunch each application and reconfigure.
Check the rest of the computer for other inconsistencies.  For example, the Computer Name in Sharing preferences may need to be changed.  Settings in Accounts preferences for the long name, account name, and password.  Changing the account name is quite complicated.
If you truly wish to start fresh then erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.

  • Ichat and messages aren't communicating on bonjour network

Hi there...i've been searching for some help to my question but haven't found it.
    This is the problem.
at my office we have some Macs running ichat with snow leopard and other ones running messages with maverick.
When we try to chat between us, we can do it only if we are using the same app/os even when we can
see all the colleagues on the bonjour network...
    to be more clear...
everyone is visible on buddy list, either we have ichat or message installed...
computer A running messages and maverick can send and receive messages to/from computer B running also messages and maverick  and viceversa
computer C running ichat and snow leopard can send and receive messages to/from computer D running also ichat and snow leopard and viceversa
computer A/B (messages/maverick) cannot send or receive messages from computers C/D (ichat/snow leopard) and viceversa
hope there is a solution out there, thanks in advance for any help...

    Hi,
Let me see if I have understood you correctly.
No matter what OS version or Messages or iChat Version all the Buddies show in each other's Buddy lists ?
Despite this only Mavericks with Messages 8 to Mavericks and Messages 8 will work with each and the same for Snow Leopard and iChat 5 based computers ?
What is not working in Mavericks to Snow Leopard (which is Messages to iChat 5) ?
Separate from using the iChat and Messages app do all the  computers appear in the Finders Side Bar for Computer "Shares" ?
I have a NAS drive which uses Mac's AFP protocol and the Windows SMB protocol AND it can be set to be  Time Machine Backup place and can do Bonjour Shares. (it appears 4 times in my list)
In addition to that I have my two other computers turned On (MacBook Pro and a G4)
This would tend to imply that the computers are all in the same part of the LAN (If the router has the IP of 192.168.0.1 only the last number should be different for all the computers)
My Computer is using WiFi (it's Airport card) to connect to the network.
The router is using the 192.168.0.x group as can be seen by the computer getting IP 192.168.0.17 in this pic
The Subnet mask should also be the same across all computers.
In addition no two computers should have the Same Name.
When I set up my computers I tend to use  my own name so each computer then gets called "Ralph Johns's Computer"  (it can't cope properly with the s at the end of my surname)
AS you can see from the Pic Above I have changed my Older G4 computer to be called "Ralphs' G4" and my Laptop to "Ralph Johns MacBook Pro"
These "Names" for the computers are also close to the names I use on the Address Cards for myself on those computers.
i.e. on the G4 the My Card in the Address Book list "Ralph G4" as my name.  (My MacBook Pro does have me as Ralph Johns)
On my iMac I am posting from (Mavericks) I can called Ralph Johns-iMac in my Address Card.
It is these names in the My Card (Address book and Contacts list on each computer) that gives the Bonjour Buddy list the names of the Buddies.
Therefore I can see my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard/iChat 5 and the G4 Leopard/iChat 4) in the Bonjour Buddy list.
    To summarise the last section.
The computers AND the Address Card for the Mac user on that computer needs to be different in each case.
The Computer names show in the Shared items in the Finder's Side Bar and then the Address Book/Contacts Name appears as the Buddy in the list.
My iMac uses the Sig Pic I use here as the buddy pic.  The G4 using Leopard and iChat 4 uses the Leopard skin looking pic and the photo one is used on my Snow Leopard/iChat 5 computer.
I have moused over the "Buddy" Ralph Johns to bring up the info panel also in the pic to show it is from my MacBook Pro which shows the computer name plays a part in this.
Cloning computers before upgrading them or even Cloning a Mac User account from one computer to another will cause issue if the Computer names  or the My Card details are not changed.
I normally use mine for transferring Pics  but I have also Texted between iChat 5 and Messages 8 today.
I hope this helps you find out which settings may need changing.

  • ACD 30" Dual Link DVI and MacBook Pro Unibody

    I have the following configuration:
ACD 30" Dual Link DVI and MacBook Pro Unibody
I am exhibiting some intermittent problems with the 30" display not coming up when I reboot for example and here are some more:
    1. MacBook Pro not in clam-shell mode and restart equals 30" display not turning on
    2. When in Snow Leopard and I have the MacBook Pro running in clam-shell mode and I open the display on the MacBook Pro it remains black.
    3. When waking the MacBook Pro from sleeping (MacBook Pro in clam-shell) the 30" ACD is "grainy" and the display is not usable and it requires a reboot to solve the problem.
Any help? In addition are there any other displays using mini-display port to mini display port technology?
What about a different monitor; will I still have to use the Dual Link DVI adapter to drive a display with higher than 1920x1200 resolution?
Are there adapters to go from mini-display port to display port?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Just came across your post and i have a couple of suggestions ive noticed with the Dual-Link to Mini-DP with the same configuration.
When working in clamshell mode for example, the 30" will become the MAIN/Default display...So if you open your macbookpro while the 30" is on and the system is running, the screen will remain black because it is in closed mode; basically meaning there is no signal to be sent.
so if you want the display to show up, either restart or put into sleep mode, then wake the system WITH THE LID OPEN.
As for the grainy/static artifacts, its beena reported issue since day 1, not sure waht the fix or issue may be with it but heres a resolution.
Press; SHIFT CONTROL EJECT-KEY all at once, this will disable signal to the monitor, but not shut off the machine...then use your mouse or press a key on the keyboard to wake the display and the grainyness should disappear.
