Ichat and messages aren't communicating on bonjour network

Hi there...i've been searching for some help to my question but haven't found it.
This is the problem.
at my office we have some Macs running ichat with snow leopard and other ones running messages with maverick.
When we try to chat between us, we can do it only if we are using the same app/os even when we can
see all the colleagues on the bonjour network...
to be more clear...
everyone is visible on buddy list, either we have ichat or message installed...
computer A running messages and maverick can send and receive messages to/from computer B running also messages and maverick  and viceversa
computer C running ichat and snow leopard can send and receive messages to/from computer D running also ichat and snow leopard and viceversa
computer A/B (messages/maverick) cannot send or receive messages from computers C/D (ichat/snow leopard) and viceversa
hope there is a solution out there, thanks in advance for any help...

Hi,
Let me see if I have understood you correctly.
No matter what OS version or Messages or iChat Version all the Buddies show in each other's Buddy lists ?
Despite this only Mavericks with Messages 8 to Mavericks and Messages 8 will work with each and the same for Snow Leopard and iChat 5 based computers ?
What is not working in Mavericks to Snow Leopard (which is Messages to iChat 5) ?
Separate from using the iChat and Messages app do all the  computers appear in the Finders Side Bar for Computer "Shares" ?
I have a NAS drive which uses Mac's AFP protocol and the Windows SMB protocol AND it can be set to be  Time Machine Backup place and can do Bonjour Shares. (it appears 4 times in my list)
In addition to that I have my two other computers turned On (MacBook Pro and a G4)
This would tend to imply that the computers are all in the same part of the LAN (If the router has the IP of 192.168.0.1 only the last number should be different for all the computers)
My Computer is using WiFi (it's Airport card) to connect to the network.
The router is using the 192.168.0.x group as can be seen by the computer getting IP 192.168.0.17 in this pic
The Subnet mask should also be the same across all computers.
In addition no two computers should have the Same Name.
When I set up my computers I tend to use  my own name so each computer then gets called "Ralph Johns's Computer"  (it can't cope properly with the s at the end of my surname)
AS you can see from the Pic Above I have changed my Older G4 computer to be called "Ralphs' G4" and my Laptop to "Ralph Johns MacBook Pro"
These "Names" for the computers are also close to the names I use on the Address Cards for myself on those computers.
i.e. on the G4 the My Card in the Address Book list "Ralph G4" as my name.  (My MacBook Pro does have me as Ralph Johns)
On my iMac I am posting from (Mavericks) I can called Ralph Johns-iMac in my Address Card.
It is these names in the My Card (Address book and Contacts list on each computer) that gives the Bonjour Buddy list the names of the Buddies.
Therefore I can see my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard/iChat 5 and the G4 Leopard/iChat 4) in the Bonjour Buddy list.
To summarise the last section.
The computers AND the Address Card for the Mac user on that computer needs to be different in each case.
The Computer names show in the Shared items in the Finder's Side Bar and then the Address Book/Contacts Name appears as the Buddy in the list.
My iMac uses the Sig Pic I use here as the buddy pic.  The G4 using Leopard and iChat 4 uses the Leopard skin looking pic and the photo one is used on my Snow Leopard/iChat 5 computer.
I have moused over the "Buddy" Ralph Johns to bring up the info panel also in the pic to show it is from my MacBook Pro which shows the computer name plays a part in this.
Cloning computers before upgrading them or even Cloning a Mac User account from one computer to another will cause issue if the Computer names  or the My Card details are not changed.
I normally use mine for transferring Pics  but I have also Texted between iChat 5 and Messages 8 today.
I hope this helps you find out which settings may need changing.

  • Cannot screen-share between iChat and Messages

    I have the following computers:
    --MacMini running 10.6 and iChat
--Mac Pro running 10.7 and Messages
--MacBook Pro running 10.8 and Messages
For years (prior to Messages) I have successfully undertaken screen-sharing with other people. Now I find that if I attempt to share the screen of someone outside of my local area network who is running iChat and system 10.6, I can only do this from my iChat computer. The two computers running Messages will fail to establish the screen-sharing session.
I have noticed that iChat signs into:
    login.oscar.aol.com
    Port 5190
    Require SSL is unchecked
    The Mac Pro signs into:
    api.oscar.aol.com
    Port 443
    Use SSL is checked
    The MacBook Pro signs into:
    api.oscar.aol.com
    Port 443
    Use SSL is unchecked
Any ideas as to why screen-sharing should be non-functional between my two Messages computers and another computer running iChat?

    Hi,
Error Messages were present in iChat 2  (the one called iChatAV in 2004) but only in the Connection Doctor.
In iChat 3 that appeared as Pop up as well on Chat Failures that could be expanded to see a Log.  (referenced in the end of my signature block).
Apple had chosen SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to make the connects between two Buddies.
In iChat 2 and 3 this was using the ports given over to SIP in an internationally agreed standard (ports 5060-5063)
One port at a time is used and they move upwards until a free one is found.
SIP phones for VoIP calls and Vonage adaptors also used this protocol.
Despite the international agreement  many ISPs started to block the SIP ports, presumably due to loss of revenue from Long Distance calls.  (Many said people could pay to have these Ports/services back)
At iChat 4 Apple moved the iChat app to using port 16402 as first choice for the SIP data.
The logs are still there in Mountain Lion and Messages but it does take a particular sort of chat failure to get them to appear.  (it is more to do with the more common failures seem to be reduced now rather than being non-existent).
Messages is very much iChat with iMessages added on. (and then the Chat Window/Interface change).
What were iChat "Accounts" are accounts in Messages and you can get the Buddy Lists to display the same way as before.
The connection Processes are exactly the same.
I have had chats that seemed to be connecting but gave the "Connecting" messages with the spinning cogwheel "forever" but as you say it is a long time since I have seen one like that.
In those cases the Log is not produced as iChat or Messages does not recognised that the chat has failed.
In cases here this repeatedly happens it is best to start up the app using the Log generation mode in Terminal.
    Quit Messages first.
    Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities)
Copy and Paste the Bold text below into Terminal
    /Applications/Messages.app/Contents/MacOS/Messages -errorLogLevel 7
This will cause Terminal to Launch Messages and produce a Log whilst doing so.
It will be quite long before it pauses when the Buddy lists are displayed.
The Log will be at a point that looks like this when that happens.

Then you can start a Video chat and the log will repeat much of what it checked on before (Camera, Mic, Bandwidth etc) and then will start the familiar "log" from the Error messages.
(you can quit Messages at this point so you are not interrupted by the log getting even longer)

If thre connection is successful and you end it then the Log adds a Bye message (Similar to the Trying one) and then checks its hardware abilities again.
There is much more to the log than I have said here but also much of it is also repeated.
SIP/2.0 100 Trying should be seen before the SIP/2.0 180 Ringing  and the SIP/2.0 200 OK

Some of the othe info in the log may prove useful such as the Bandwidth it finds (BWD)
    202444.629246 BWD: GotBandwidth: 9080501/23966942 (up/down) @[11.0.168.192:0.255.255.255]
202444.629266 BWD bandwidth: 9080 kbits up, 23966 kbits down.
I don't need the whole log at this stage just highlights if you think they might point to things.
I would be keen to see the Bandwidth the app sees as this might be a clue.
The CommNAT details will also be useful.
You can Quit Messages normally and then Quit Terminal or just Quit Terminal and Confirm the Quitting of processes it is running.

  • Iphoto and Facebook aren't communicating. I'm unable to post pictures to FB from iPhoto. Any suggestions?

IPhoto and Facebook not communicating. Pics won't upload from iPhoto to Facebook.

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • HT2020 Can iChat and iMessage interface at all or do I have to load iChat on my Mountain Lion to set up a chat session with iChat?

My senior parents have iChat.  I have iMessage.  I want to help them remotely and want to share screens.  Can that be done?

Oh, you wanted the How as well ?
    (You didn't actually ask that)
Both you and your parent need to be on the same Messaging service (it comes down to using AIM or Jabber).
Lets presume you are using an Apple ID in Messages that is from an iCloud registration (@me.com or @icloud.com ending name).
You would need to enter this name (Again) As it is a Valid AIM Name in the Preferences as an AIM Account (Press the + button then chose AIM in the drop down)
If they are using AIM already then just add each other to each others Buddy lists.
If you both happen to have Gmail Accounts then your could Enable "Talk" on your Google Settings then add your proper Gmail ID  and chose GoogleTalk in the Accounts > + button > Add account pane
You have to enter your Google ID as it appears on the Web Mail Page   (The Apple Mail app will accept @gmail.com or @googlemail.com and fetch your mail but iChat and Messages needs it to be just so).
If you both have Facebook accounts then Enable "Chat" on your Facebook Setting and Add this as a Jabber ID
    NOTES.
Certain Apple IDs are valid Screen Names (@mac.com @me.com and @iCloud.com) but some of these if registered via iCloud will not work in iChat version earlier than iChat 6.
This is due to the way iChat 6 and Messages logs in to me.com as well as a security check on looking at the password.

Anyone had any recent trouble trying to share a screen using iMessage and iChat?  I tried connecting with my soon-to-be 94 year old Dad.  He has an older OS that still uses iChat.  I use iMessage.  I went to "Share" his desktop and both of us could hear each other but the screen never materialized.  We both rebooted the computers but to no avail.  Any other suggestions would be helpful.  It's too hard trying to instruct him over the phone.
    Many thanks, Peter

    Hi,
Screen Sharing in both iChat and Messages uses an Audio Chat with a VNC connection on a random port along side.
This random ports needs the router to use UPnP to open the ports (lets the computer/App the ports.)
In Apple Base Stations Port Mapping Protocol needs to be enabled for the same purpose.

    HI,
iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login.  (where people can Google Chat as it were in a  Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here  This article has been changed several time in the recent months.  It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

  • IChat 4.0.9 Incoming Text Messages Aren't Received

    Hi All,
I am troubleshooting a problem with iChat 4.0.9 after upgrading to Mac OS X Combined 10.5.8. After installing the system update for OS X 10.5.8 on January 6, 2011, I no longer receive incoming text messages. Outgoing messages are received but incoming chat requests and responses to my messages are lost. Video and Audio chat work as normal, only the text messages are impacted.
I've looked at the system security settings, the firewall is set to allow all incoming traffic.
Apple recommended that I trash iChat and reinstall from the system disks, but the system won't take the disks that I have (I'm assuming because I'm on a newer version of the system), and I cannot find a 10.5.8 download (the 10.5.1 download also would not install).
Also of note is that the system shows that iChat was updated on January 30th, 2011 (another system update was pushed on this date).
Any ideas or thoughts on other things to check?
    Your help is much appreciated.

    Hi,
The Process is to stick in the Install Disk then open it in the Finder.
Expand the Window to see the Options Installs part.

I have an iphone6. And out of the blue my group messages aren't working. I can send but not receiving any back.  Any ideas???  I already reset my phone twice.

You should check that your settings (both directions) match this:
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
    Port: 993
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
    Port: 587
    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    Password: Your iCloud password
Note: If you receive errors using SSL, try using TLS instead.
Your signature says you have 10.6.8 - is this correct? If you migrated from MobileMe using this your mail settings won't be correct and you will need to follow this procedure to re-enter them:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard

  • Is there a way for this community, to make a suggestion to Apple to include blocking a specific contact number calls and messages just as other phones provide that feature for their users.

No phone provides true call blocking. At best, they provide call diversion. Essentially, the call is answered and disconnected automatically. If I recall, Apple is adding call diversion features in iOS 7.
    Best of luck.

  • IChat to messages - phone and macbook intertwined

My daughter and I both have macbooks - she is on mountain lion, I am on lion.
She has messages and i have ichat.
We both have iphones. I am on ios6 she is on ios5
When she sends messages to me at my me.com email address from her macbook in messages it comes to my phone but not to my ichat on my mac.
How can we get to chat macbook to macbook.

    Hi,
iMessages is something that Messages (App on Mac or iOS Device) can do.
This is in addition to the former iChat services such as using AIM or Jabber.
That is to say that on her Message App she set sup an iMessage Account (Apple ID "registered" for iMessages)
She can or could set up and AIM valid Name or a Jabber ID as you can in iChat.
    iChat does not do iMessages.
So Apple Issued IDs are also Valid AIM Screen Names (Those ending @mac.com and @me.com)
Both of you may be able to set these up as AIM names in your app (older version of iChat have separate @me.com and @mac.com settings)
iCloud Issued @me.com name need at least iChat 6 to work (iChat 6 and Messages also login to me.com that then allows the AIM server to "see" the password.
This may mean that your daughter has two Accounts both using the Apple ID (one with iMessages and one with AIM - I do this)

  • Help getting macbook ichat and ipad2 messages talking

I have a 6 yr old Macbook Pro with 10.6.8 my wife has an ipad 2. We can not seem to connect using ichat....any help would be appreciated.

    HI,
iChat 5 in OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) can send text Messages to an iPad in a Web Browser that is logged in to AIM Express.
You may also find that there is a iPad (mobile) app from AIM that you can also get (I don't have an iPad so I am not that up on Apps)
My MacBook Pro is  Version 1,1 from 2007 and is the "first" MacBook Pro (essentially the Intel version of a PowerBook)
It cannot run Lion (or Mountain Lion) which means I cannot run Message (beta or full version) on it.
Messages though, can send iMessages to the Mac that has Messages app
(Basically iMessages to connect to iOS devices that has been "bolted on" to iChat and then the app is given a new name)
    To restate.
You should have a couple of option to use AIM in some form on the iPad
Then you can both use AIM names (Includes @mac.com name in iChat 5) and you should be able to Text chat.
    NOTES
iCloud issued @Me.com names will not work in iChat 5
iCloud started with Lion and in iChat 6 there is a dual Login to both me.com and AIM that allows AIM to "See" the password.
iChat 5 (or earlier) does not do this login to Me.com so the password cannot be verified by the AIM servers.
You will probably find the same with iCloud @me.com name in a Browser or any AIM app for iOS devices.

  • IChat shows all my buddies off line but they can still see and message me

So the other day all of my buddies disappeared from my buddy list. This has happened before and I just restarted the program and it was fine. I assumed it was some glitch that appeared after having the program running for a while.
This time I restarted the program and nothing happened.
So all my friends can see and message me, I can change my status, and they can see it. Once I get an IM from them I can have a normal chat. I can log into any service, AIM or even my gmail chat, and I still have this problem.
I haven't changed anything in my preferences or downloaded any new programs.
I updated all software in case that was the problem and restarted. Nothing.
I've been perusing the discussion boards and it was suggested to change the port (to 443). I did this, and again nothing.
Also it suggested deleting com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist and .iChatagent. Both of which I did. And again nothing...
I am going to visit the geniusbar in three days but I would like to fix this before then. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

    Hi,
I have responded to two threads on this in iChat 3
    This is one
In both I have had no confirmation that anything tried so far has worked.

    Hi
As far as i know there is not easy way to acheive it by calling some webservice or chacking DB table. I developed some tool in .net by calling direct webpage using HTTPRequest class
