IChat And New D-Link Router Problems

Folks,
I really need a helping hand with iChat. I've posted some problems here before which you were kind enough to help me out with but I am at wits end tonight. I just bought a new D-Link EBR-2310 Wired Router (Hardware Version B1 and Firmware Version 2.01 - the very latest version). I'm completely up to date on my iMac running Mac OS X 10.5.7 with every software update known to June 11th, 2009 including QuickTime 7.6.2. I have QuickTime Streaming set to 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet LAN and iChat Bandwidth Limit set to 500 kbps.
I use an AIM account which uses port 5190. With my old D-Link Router (DI-604), I had to set up an Advanced Virtual Server for UDP Port 5190 and I also had to disable the "Discard Ping From WAN side" function (which seems to almost defeat the purpose of the security of the router in some ways but I didn't have much choice). Making these changes seemed to fix all the iChat "communications error" problems I was having with the older router. Things seemed to work fine after making these changes mind you, this was under Mac OS X 10.5.6 and I'm now running Mac OS X 10.5.7.
In this new D-Link EBR-2310 Router, I've done much the same thing. In the Advanced Section of the new router under Application Rules, I've set up a new "application name" called iChat and configured Trigger Port 5190 UDP and Firewall Port 5190 UDP - set to "always" but should I have both UDP and TCP enabled or just UDP? I've also enabled "WAN Ping Respond" (again, this seems to defeat some of the security of the router but no choice other than to do this).
I'm getting iChat "communications errors" and just a generally poor connection with whomever I chat with. On their end, my voice will drop out at times and my image will sometimes have a little static in it. It happens with all users on their end (some are AIM users, some are dotmac/mobile me users). After a few minutes of being able to chat, the picture will freeze and a communication error pops up. We have to quit out of our connection and log back in and then it will work again for a while until the same problem occurs.
I called D-Link and they were of no help when it came to using Macs with iChat (iChat isn't even listed as one of the applications in any of the router preferences). They suggested changing the MTU from 1500 down to 1492 but my old D-Link worked fine at 1500. They also suggested disabling "SPI" in the router firewall settings. I haven't done any of this yet as they didn't know much about Macs.
Do I need to disable "SPI" in the router firewall settings? Do I need to configure both UDP and TCP ports 5190 in Application Rules? Do I need to set up some sort of Port Forwarding on this new router? Is there some other configuration I need to set up in this new router? I'm just lost. Darned near ready to do away with the router completely but we have three Macs on our network so we need the router in order for all of us to be able to access the Internet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gerard

Hi,
Both are correct.
iChat 3 uses 20 ports as a Range for the A/V chats as it uses 4 ports on a Vid in Vid Out, Audio In Audio Out basis where as iChat 4 sends and gets everything on one port.
The iChat 4 Article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2282 does not mention the Bonjour or Jabber Ports which are still needed (in the router and/or Modem)
What the Second Article does not list is the iChat Screen Sharing port.
For this using UPnP if the device has it is better.
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) allows the app to sate when and what ports are open for it (they close after a period of Non use that can be adjusted in some modem/routers).
You need this as the Screen Sharing ports is random.
The Port Forward site shows two versions
Version 1
Version 2
with slight differences in how the boxes can be filled in.
Neither set of pics gives clues as to whether UPnP is on there.
Yes I would disable SPI (And/Or DoS)
SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) tries to examine the data coming to your modem and judge if it is Ok to pass on.
There is so much iChat Video data in some chats that it can not keep up and closes the port.
DoS (Denial Of Service) measures the rate of data and when it reaches a threshold it cuts the port presuming it to be an attack. Of course most devices that have it have un-adjustable settings that do not reflect modern Internet Speeds.
EDIT
This Emulator says UPnP is in Advanced Network along with Enable WAN Ping Respond (Although you do not have a time limit adjustment)

I have gone to the router manufacture and walked through the set up, no luck.  I tried the troubleshooting pages for the itouch.  I am still shut out.  I see the ssid and the lock I use the password still no luck.  It works in other locations, but downloads are slow.

    - Try resetting your iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router

  • D-Link Router Problem with new MacBook Pro

I have had my new MacBook Pro for less than one month and I have had weak home Internet connections ever since. I use a D-Link DI 624 revC wireless router that I bought back in February. I have it connected to a cable modem. I used to have an iBook and the D-Link worked great.
Now the airport signal never shows full strength. The signal is sporatic by showing three bars and then suddenly dropping to one or two. Just loading a web page will cause the signal strength to suddenly drop or lose connection altogether. I used to have full Internet access throughout the house. Now the wireless works only in two rooms.
Tactics that I have tried so far:
-Switched channels from 6 to 1 or 11
    -Setting channel switching to auto
    -Reset and rebooted
    -Restore to factory settings
    -Disabling SSID
    -Allowing only 802.11g
-Moved the router to a different location
    -Checked for possible interference
I know that it is probably my router as my Internet connections seem to fine at other places. I do not know why I would suddenly have these problems with a more powerful notebook.
I am not a network pro so I will be very grateful for any suggestions.

OK ... all those answers add up.
    I bought back in February
Have you updated the Firmware in the Router, a new version (2.75) was released 7/5/2006 that says:
    ¤ Fixed Security Issues.
    ¤ Improved Performance

    How to upgrade
You could also improve the power of the signal/extend the range with an extra antenna like this

  • 15" G4 PowerBook 1.67 GHz - no Internet access with new D-Link router

I've had the PowerBook for about three years, which worked fine with my Belkin router. I just bought a new D-Link DIR-655 wireless router, and it seems to work fine with my nearly new Intel iMac and my wife's MacBook. In contrast, with the PowerBook, I'm getting a signal (as indicated by the AirPort signal strength indicator), and it accepts my password for the wireless network, but I can't pull up any web pages. The security on the router is set to WPA (Personal).
Any guidance or guesses as to what's going on would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Chris

You should probably check to the log/ or DHCP Client list of the router, to see if your PowerBook getting a DHCP lease. I've had a similar problem, with my AirPort WAP. It turned out that firewall in Leopard wasn't allowing DHCP traffic through, so my Mac never picked up an IP address. You could also check to see if your Mac doesn't have a self assigned IP. This is under the "Advanced"button, "TCP/IP Tab" in Leopard. If it's self assigned, then your MAC isn't picking up an IP address from your router. Check to see if you have a SW firewall enabled on the PowerBook. If so, try turning it off.
    Hope this helps,
    Mark

  • IChat and a D-Link DIR-655

I've read the various support discussions on this router and using it with iChat. Lots of fixes and settings have been given. People say it works and it doesn't work.
If you use iChat (especially with screen sharing) and have a DIR-655, please post here what settings you've used to accomplish this. I would be nice to have something complete in one place. Not just "Turn on UPnP". I've done that and that alone is not the answer.
So again, if you have done iChat screen sharing and you have a DIR-655, please post which settings you changed, turned on or turn off to get it all working.
    Thanks,
    Charles

I seem to remember that one post/thread had comments about successfully using this device but I can not seem to find it in either iChat 3 or the iChat 4 (iChat and iChat Sharing in Leopard)
The closest I got was a reference to it in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7296647&#7296647 but no link.

  • New D-Link router won't connect to DirecTV cinema kit

Just got & installed a new D-link DSL 2750B yesterday. I set it up with my existing SSID & WPA passcode -- all my devices work perfectly, EXCEPT my DirecTV cinema kit which is a wireless receiver. IT was fine until the new setup. I spent ( so far ) over 5 hours trying to set this up. The DirecTV techs ( 2 ) I spoke with don't have a clue. I reset everything multiple times to no avail.  The DirecTV forums list several resetting steps, all of which i tried. Nothing. If anyone has any clue as to what i can try, I'd certainly appreciate the help. The router didn't come with any manual and I'm not too comfortable changing any settings other than the security mode ( WPA, etc ) without some guidance. Thanks in advance.

Bottom Line: If you have a Dlink DSL2750b from Verizon and are trying to install DirectTV cinema connection STOP RIGHT NOW and save youself the five hours I just spent learning that the two are simply incompatible.
For some reason no one at DirecTV knew this and put me though endless paces to no avail, including a change to my router password that now means I have to reconnect all of my devices.
Once I learned in DirectTV forums that this Dlink modem router is incompatible with DirectTV I called Verizon and the tech agent said, "Oh yes that one is incompatible with DirecTV." And he cheerfully ordered a free replacement, the Actiontec GT784WNV, which I haven't gotten yet but was promised it will be fine.
    Two Questions:
    1) For DirecTV, why in the world isn't this a known issue for your tech team so that they don't have to belabor consumers with hours of troubleshooting that does no good.
    2) Most importantly, for Verizon, why in the world do you even send out a modem that isn't compatible with the growing use of internet connection equipment for TVs? Or at least tell us before we order them.

  • I cannot connect external USB HDD to my new TP-Link Router

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new TP-Link Modem Router with a USB port on the back.
I have been using a WD My Passport external HDD for Time Machine backups and photos for some time. I ususally connect it directly to my Macbook each time i want to backup.
With the new router, I was hoping to connect the HDD to the USB port and be able to connect over my wireless network, but have not been able to.
The router recognises that a HDD is connected to it, but the Macbook will not allow me to find it or connect to it.
    Any ideas or help?
    Thanks

What kind of drives, and how are they connected? Do they have external power supplies or just use the usb bus power? Do they work in a different mac?

  • I'd like to use Time Capsule as Router and remove D-Link Router.  Is that what it's designed for?

I currently use a D-Link Router and also have a 1st generation time capsule as use as a back up device.  I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Currently I have a Cable modem with a Static IP address and then on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address.  I've looked on the Time Capsule I have hooked up now and I'm not sure if the TC will let me do that.
I really should of researched before, but I'd just bought a mini mac with lion server and it talked about the ease of using TC with it and purchased before researching...

I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Yes, the Time Capsule is designed to connect directly to a modem.
on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address
You can set up "static" IP addresses for each of your network devices....IF....the Time Capsule is set up to be the "main"' router on the network.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Click the DHCP tab below the icons
The DHCP Reservations box will allow to you assign a specific IP address based on the MAC address or AirPort ID of each device.
Devices could be assigned IP addresses in the 10.0.1.x range or 192.168.1.x range depending on your preference.

  • Bridge cs5 camera raw 6.5 to 6.5 and new bridge cs6 preview problem

    Hi,
when i actualize camera raw from 6.5 to 6.6 the preview can`t give me right preview after 1 adjustment in camera raw.Image apears like when we open it in camera raw and it last few seconds with the yellow exclamation mark.
Months ago the only solution i found after several instals was to turn back to camera raw 6.5.
Now im trying beta bridge cs6 and problem come back for me again.
I use Nikon D3x with 14 bits ~49MB .nef files in Windows 7 64 bits.
Is any one have same problem? And why only in 6.6 (and new camera raw 7.0) and not in 6.5?
    Thanks

I use Bridge CS5 with camera raw 6.7.1 in combibnation with a canon 6D and a canon 5D Mark2. The raw files from the 5D are shown in bridge, the raw files from the 6D are not. There is just an icon. The camera raw add-on is the latest usable update for Windows, the canon 6d is listed as compatible. Has anyone an idea what to do?
The Canon 6D id NOT supported by ACR 6.7.1. It was supported for the very first time in ACR 7.3 whch requires CS6 to run.
Therefore you will never be able to open raw CR2 files from the 6D directly in CS5.
If you do not plan on upgrading, you can download the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.3 (always use the latest version, it's not tied to your version of Photoshop at all), install it like any other application and then run it on each batch of CR2 files to convert them to raw DNG files that you can then open in your version of Photoshop and ACR.

  • IChat and new version of AIM "Triton" problems...

I just got my iMac with built-in iSight. I was able to video chat with a friend who was on AIM, but using a PC....UNTIL, she had to upgrade her AIM to the beta version of "Triton" so that her camera would work with other PC's. Since she did that I can no longer video chat with her. I tried to download the latest AIM for Mac, but it doesn't seem to support any video chat.
Has anyone else come across this problem? I tested my camera with the AIM addresses mentioned in one of the other articles and it worked so I'm thinking it is a new AIM problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You can emial me directly or post here, but I'm not sure I'll be able to find my way back.......

    hi Joshgutt
Triton does not do video yet, your friend will have to use AIM5.9 http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/otherwin.adp?aolp=

when on Ebay and looking at an auction, the links for 'shipping and payment' and 'read more' (in the item specifics block) do not respond. all other links on auction pages work. and they also work using IE. this is the only website that i have this problem with.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
'''If Firefox is open,''' you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • IChat and new Background support...Pixelated Video???

    Hi,
Just playing around with Leopard this morning and noticed some more graphics issues. While in a video iChat, I changed my background to the roller coaster and when I come back in the frame, the graphics are pixelated and the audio is choppy. I wonder if this is related to some of the other graphics issues folks are seeing with Leopard.
My machine is a new rev 24" Intel iMac with 2GB of RAM.

I've noticed this too, I think the problem is that there's too much going on in the background. From what I can tell, when you step out of frame it just looks for the colours that are in the background in hopes that your face/clothing doesn't match the same colours as the background. Therefore, if there is some black in the background and your wearing a dark/black shirt, it'll probably get rid of your shirt.
This is pretty lame, but i think the only way to really work around this is the whole "Green screen" trick. Have a BG that has one colour, no shadows, and then step back in. Its just bad because it looked so amazing in the demonstration videos. Oh well...

  • Time Machine and New Macbook, old iBook problem.

Hi there. I was using a G4 iBook until about 1 month ago. I had been backing it up with time machine. I then bought a new computer. Upon start up, I used time machine to move my applications and files over to the new Macbook. Everything has been dandy with the new Macbook.
Today I tried to back up the Macbook using time machine but it appeared to freeze about halfway through. I investigated the boards for advice. Since my iBook was a Power PC and the new Macbook is an Intel computer, I understand that I needed to reformat the external hard drive. Okay, I did that. I then tried to run a backup but it again froze, after only 60 MBs of 37 GBs. When I try opening the external hard drive I notice that it still refers to my computer as my iBook rather than the Macbook. Does this explain the problem and if so, how can I rename my computer to reflect the change? I don't get it.

To the extent that Time Machine uses a computer's "name" in naming its backup files, that could be the explanation.
Have you renamed your MacBook to see if that helps?

  • Airport express and the existing wireless router problem.......

alphasonic, Welcome to the discussion area!
Is your "wireless router" an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or another AirPort Express (AX)? If not, you probably will not be able to do this.
The Ethernet port on the AX is active ONLY when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly connect to a network. Unfortunately most (nearly all) are NOT compatible with Apple's WDS and therefore this is not possible.
