Ichat & AOL instant messenger won't accept my ID or password

When attempting to use ichat, I can't get past the AOL instant messenger login. It says I have the wrong ID or password. But I'm using the correct ones. Does anyone know what to do? Thanks!

HI,
Two possibles.
1) You are using iChat 5 or Earlier with an iCloud Issued ID from Apple (@me.com or @iCloud.com)
Apple now have the iChat 6 and Messages app log in to me.com as well as AIM and this then Allows AIM to "read" the Password.
Earlier versions of iChat do not do this so you cannot then Login despite the name actually being Valid.
2) AIM servers have a 16 character Limit on Passwords.
You may need to shorten your password. Applies to any version of iChat or Messages.

AOL Instant Messenger Login Problem

Hi guys and gals,
So I've been having a problem for quite some time now and I was hoping someone might have experienced the same problem and can tell me just how to fix it...
So I've been using iChat for years with my AIM password and login and have never had a problem. Just recently, someone hacked in to my account and started spamming people from my account. Because of this I had to change my password. When I entered the new password into iChat, it gave me the following error:
*AOL Instant Messenger Login*
iChat was unable to login to the AOL Instant
Messenger service because your screen name or
password was incorrect.
I know the password is correct and the account works if I sign in with AIM; however, I hate AIM and want to use the account with iChat. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling iChat. I've also tried deleting my account and recreating it with the new password but that didn't work either.
Has anyone experienced this before or does anyone know how I can get iChat to work again? Thank you so much!

Use this Users Tip to check the Keychain entry for your AIM name

You may find you have two entries in the passwords section for your Screen Name.
It may also pay to delete the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist after removing the passwords row or stars in iChat and well as deleting any extra Keychain items and changing the password there.
Then Restart iChat so that it re-writes the plist from defaults and current Keychain info.

lorsque je souhaite me connecter sur "messages" systèmatiquement il m ouvre une fenetre AOL Instant Messenger et me demande d entrer mon mot de passe pour le compte en question. Jusque là OK
mais quand j entre mon mot de passe, il me dit que l identifiant ou le mot de passe n est pas correct, du coup impossible de me connecter avec un quelconque compte "hotmail"
Si quelqu un avait une solution...

When I want to connect on "messages" it prompted systematically (m) opens a window AOL Instant Messenger and asks me to enter my password to the account in question. OK so far
but when j between my password, it tells me the username or the password is not correct, the coup not I connect with any account "hotmail"

Messages will connect to any Screen Name valid with AIM listed in the System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars and enabled for Messages (Or listed in the Messages > Preferences > Accounts)
Same for Jabber IDs (Includes Facebook iDs and GoogleMail IDs)
It will not do MSN/Hotmail/Live IDs without a bit of work

Do you have an Apple ID ending in @mac.com or @me.com as these are Valid AIM names ?
Or do you have an AIM Screen Name already ?

I need help with resetting my ichat. When i try to login now it wont let me... it says "AOL Instant Messenger password" and then "iChat can't log in to ... because your login ID or password is incorrect. How do I reset this if I cant log in?

iChat (it would help to know which version) can accept Apple IDs as valid AIM Screen Names.
However if you have iChat 5 or earlier you cannot use ones ending in @me.com or @icloud.com issued by iCloud. (they can be used in iChat 6 or Messages as these versions make a double login to AIM and Apple to allow the use of the password).
In addition if you are using an Apple ID for an AIM Screen Name the password still needs to keep to the 16 character limit that AIM has.
AN @mac.com name can be used on any version of iChat (Until the 30th June 2014)
As it does not need a double check with Apple you can use it to log in to the AIM Web pages
Login here with an AIM Name registered at AIM or and @mac.com name and see if you get any suspended account messages.
Sometimes account can be suspended. Usually because something has triggered the "Unusual Activity" item.
About a year ago many @mac.com users that travelled out of their own country found themselves suspended when they got home.
If the Name checks out of if an Apple ID the password in known to be 16 characters or Less then do this:-
In Lion upwards open a Finder Window and use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.
Select the Library that appears in the menu list.
Navigate to Preferences.
(If you have version earlier than Lion the just navigate to ~/Library/Preferences (that's the Library in you Home - Little House icon - folder)
Fnd com.apple.ichat.aim.plist (even if you are using Messages)
Drag the file to the Trash and Restart the app.

IChat was unable to login to AOL Instant Messenger!

I've been unable to log into iChat with my @me.com username for the last week. Every time I try to set my status to Available I get this message:
AOL Instant Messenger Login
iChat was unable to login to AOL Instant Messenger because your screen name or password was incorrect.
Is this happening to anyone else? Will it ever be fixed? My Login ID and Password are the same as they've always been. Nothing's changed at my end. So why can't I get online with iChat?

You're lucky. I tried deleting my MobileMe account within iChat, and re-adding it, but I still have the same error message. I haven't been able to use iChat for coming up to a month now

I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Leopard and all was good. EXCEPT that now I can't log into iChat anymore!
I keep getting this message:

I know that both are correct because I can log into my old iBook and my iMac.
I don't have aol, I use .mac although I don't subscribe, just use it for iChat.
I've deleted the account and started again but always get the same message. I can log in fine using gmail and I used a friends aol and that works but nobody can log into ichat with a .mac screen name.
Help me please.

Ok I also can't log in via adium but if I use my wife's or my mother in-laws sign in then iChat works no problem.
I'm confused because I know my details are correct. Could it have anything to do with the initial set up of the os?

10.4.8 and AOL instant messenger

I just ran the update... went to universal access to get rid of the black box, but now I noticed that i can't sign onto ANY AOL instant messenger program be it ichat, AIM or Adium. Being a college student you KNOW how important this is to me . But any suggestions would be very appreciated.

I can get it to work with a browser through AIM express, but shouldn't there be a way for me to get a client to work?

Well first off your time and date were possibly off, if you came here first that could have been resolved and you didn't need to wipe and install OS X.
WiFi, Internet problems, possible solutions
The computer stores the time and date in like a EPROM (electronic programamble read only memory) when it first boots the machine it has this (and other data) to connect online.
To reset this you head to System Preferences, however you wiped OS X so you can't set it and the EPROM setting is broken so it won't work over WiFi which gives a DCHP lease based on time and date, which yours is off.
So hook up the computer to the router using a Cat 5 Ethernet cable and try reinstalling OS X again that way, correcting for the time and date issue.
You might have to Zap the PRAM, which clears this EPROM setttings.

Aol instant messenger keeps signing off

i just downloaded aol instant messenger off of www.aim.com when i sign on it signs me off after one min. also my ichat wont connect. what is the problem. the internet and everything else is fine

try to repair permission: application / utilities / disk utility / select HD / repair permission.
if problem persist, that might be something else that hopefully on their server end that sign you off.

How would I remove AOL Instant Messenger from my G5. I do not see an uninstall option and am not familiar with the Apple O/S.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) problem

I use AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) with my 3G, version 2.2. When I IM someone that is signed using the AOL 9.1 software and Vista they see the word DIV, surrounded with brackets at the begining and end of my AIM text. Any suggestions for help would be appreciated

Have you tried creating a second AIM account? and see if it also comes up the same way when chatting with friends?
It's possible that when you were using AIM on another system and customized your profile or display name, it may of appeared in another way.
I don't use AIM Software at home I use
Pidgin
Digsby
Trillian
Adium
All these are all in 1 chat programs, Mainly for PC and other for Mac. But I do chat people from my iPhone using AIM or SMS responses. They never see the DIV at all.
Make a test account and see if it still happens. Make sure to check for App updates for iPhone and update your AOL AIM App if there is an update.

Ethernet Connected Good, But iChat And MSN Messenger Won't Get Connected !

I'm now connecting through a Local Area Network Via Ethernet Cable, The Connection is good, and Safari had no problem to get into the internet, but the iChat and MSN Messenger won't get connected !
I use 2 account in iChat Which they are Mobile Me Account And GMail Account.
also I tried adium it still won't get connected.

everything is fine, iTunes store work correctly, Safari work correctly, except for the IM apps aren't working.
when i switch to Windows VISTA everything work fine include Live Messenger, Skype....etc.

email send/receive suddenly doesn't work (as of September 24th); I can't change email settings (one suggestion from tech) as BB phone won't accept *valid* username and password -- what to do?
I understand from a support note that if I keep trying my password/username combination, my BB will eventually delete all data!
I can't understand this. I'm completely lost now. I can't remember what I've done or tried to do. A plethora of usernames and passwords is swimming in my head.
Thanks for any hints. I have always loved this BB Bold and have never had any trouble with it.

But the real question is why for the past year did the passwords work and then all of the sudden after this anomaly the disk password doesn't work? I'm not 100% sure of what my configuration was, but I know that most of the time it required one password -- supervisor, and occasionally it asked for 2 -- disk password as well I believe. This may have been related to the Password on Restart setting I think -- asking for the disk password on cold vs. warm boot. But I know both were exactly the same. But after this incident only the Supervisor password worked.

I can't log in to my computer. It won't accept any names and passwords from any accounts.

This is my work computer, and it started 3 days ago. It won't accept the name and password of any account in the office, except for the localadmin log in. That works just fine. I have tried all the basic troubleshooting like restarting, unplugging the computer, unplugging the network cable. Doesn't help. The login screen shakes like I typed in the wrong password.
It is connect to a network with other macs and PCs. We use Windows Small Business Server 2003, I don't know if that has anything to do with the issue.
Today the problem also started affecting a Mac Book Pro, which is also connected to the network.
Is there an update we are missing? What's going on?

Are you authenticating to an Active Directory server? If so, that's where the problem is.
