IChat AV 2.1 - Failed to Respond (NOT Tiger AV 3 version)

Hi all - have been iChatting with my sister for a long time without too many problems. All of a sudden (since a couple of days) we can no longer connect to each other. Both on Mac 10.3.9/AV 2.1 - both with sufficient broadband speeds - both with the proper ports open. We've had no changes in system. Tried from G5 to G5; from iBook to PowerBook, from G5 to laptop, nothing works. Starting up iChat no problem, inviting for video chat no problem, screen says "Starting video chat" and then it either "hangs" or gives the message "user failed to respond". Connection Doctor message is: xx did not respond. Tried to send UDP SIP "invite" to the following IP addresses and ports: xxxx:5060, xxxx:5060.
All related topics I checked here seem to deal with Tiger's version iChat AV 3, but we have the problem in iChat AV 2.1. Would anyone be able to give us some tips and hints? Other than bad connections (sound/video) from time to time, everything worked just fine. Thanks much!

Hello Snobble
All of a sudden (since a couple of days) ...
If the problem occurred only after the recent Security updates, I suggest you download and reapply the Security Update 2005-007 (Mac OS X 10.3.9 Client). You may have had a bad download or install.
Repair permissions
b before AND after
the update. See Gulliver's Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance FAQ for why.
If that does not get iChat AV working again, try the suggestions in the How Can I get iChat working again? FAQ.

  • Help - failed to respond - ichat os 10.4.7

i just bought 3 new macbooks. 1 for my fiance, 1 for myself, and 1 for my inlaws as i am moving out of state in two weeks.
i have an OLD g4 cube and an old ibook with an external, firewire isight camera. when i use both the ibook (wireless) and the cube (direct ethernet connection to my comcast cable modem) i am able to ichat with my sister who is in nyc.
when i first bought the 1st macbook i brought it home and successfully connected with my sister, in her apartment, and video-conferenced.
i then bought the 2 macbooks, set them up at my fiances house. 1 was hard-wired to their ethernet connection, the other was working wirelessly. we were able to connect and ichat in their house.
my fiance brought her computer to my house last night, we upgraded her and my OS to OS 10.4.7.
she went home, we connected via our wireless chats ONE time ... then when we tried later - we each got the "failed to respond b.c XXXX did not reply" (each got it on our own computer for our own names)
i was able to connect my macbook to my ethernet and ichat with the computer that was hard-wired at her house, but once i removed my hard-wire connection at my house, i lost the connection immediately
i then took out my isight and cube and connected to my parents computer again, i also used my ibook laptop and connected with the isight again ... when i tried to use the new macbook - failed to respond again and again and again
please - i'm so frustrated - can anyone help after that verbose explaination of my problem

    Hi bginz,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Ok it is a bit like this.
iChat reads the Connection speed via a setting in System Preferences for Quicktime.
WHen a computer is started up for the first time the full Bandwidth is passed to iChat
In subsquent iChat/computer start ups the Quicktime setting is used.
If this is set to Automatic it returns a 0 to iChat and caps the Bandwidth.
Go to System Preferences > QUicktime > Streaming tab and set the drop down to match your download speed.
If your connection is fatser than 1.5meg then use the 1.5meg setting.
Some of your problem may be related to the routing set up you have on your LAN.
Hw are you set up with regard to IP issuing from your modem ?
Is it using DHCP or have you set up Static routing ?
IS there any other routing device involved ?
This will lead to how have you opened the ports to allow different computers to use the iChat ports ?
Can you confirm that the initial connections are form the AIM Buddy List and not the Bonjour one ?

  • IChat v Skype - 'fail to respond' etc

I have been using Skype on my Mac for a long time, and recently decided to try out iChat AV with friends living overseas. They have Macs too.
I find iChat has superior audio capabilities but it has serious problems with such issues as 'user failed to respond' or 'insufficient bandwidth'. These are problems that occur like 70% of the time and I know it is not a matter of router settings as I could sometimes get iChat to work just great. I have checked out all the postings in this forum regarding these issues and tried all the fixes but still get these problems. They do not happen all the time. Only sometimes! By the way, I am using ADSL 1500 Mbs as are my friends and I know speed/bandwidth are more than sufficient.
So, now its back to good old Skype (never had connection problems from day one). Even Gizmo is good too. Apple seriously needs to work on these issues real quick. They need to learn from Skype.

  • "Failed to respond" message on iChat

Hello, i thought posting my problems in this board was more appropriate than iSight.
I am unable to connect video chat with a PC user (with AIM 5.9) via iChat AV 3.0.1. I can connect to the test appleu3test01 user for video chat but not my PC friend. I continue to ge tthe "Failed to respond" error message.
please help! i've tried to read the step by step pages on instructions but it seems i've tried to eliminate plists and reset port numbers but nothing is working.

    Hi Ives,
If the PC user is on XP and has Service PAck 2 installed they mey need to Enable AIM thorugh the XP firewall
http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html See the bottom of the two yellow boxes.
They may also need the exrta Video file and Tune their Camera and Mic to the appliction Both of these have links in the top yellow box (the "here" link and the Bold Tuning Link justs after)

I have two systems with Win2003 R2 installed with Iscsi initiator 2.0.8. One Iscsi initiator is connected with the target but when I connect the second system, the system is not able to connect and giving me login error mentioned above. I disconnect the
connected system(The system which is connected with windows target) and connect the system which is failing to connect with the windows target, this time the failing system able to connect with windows target.

The system which is connected with the windows target, I restarted it. While restarting the system, I connect the other system which then connected successfully. Now this time when both systems are up and running both system's iscsi initiator is connected

  • Unable to chat "because user failed to respond"

I and my family are having trouble using iChat AV for video chat. The problem also affects audio chat.
Essentially, when person A invites person B to chat, and person B accepts, there is a delay with the spinning indicator (which always pauses momentairly in this process) and then person B sees an error message saying that person A "failed to respond". Messaging works fine.
My father experienced this issue first, unable to connect to my brother. However, I was able to connect to both of them. Recently, I was invited to download an iSight Updater, and since this the problem now affects me.
My father uses iChat AV v3.1.6 (v441) on OS 10.4.8 on a G5 iMac
    I use iChat AV 2.1 (v153) on OS 10.3.9 on a G4 iMac
I believe my brother also uses OS 10.3.x
Can anyone provide any assistance as this problem is getting us down! Thanks!

  • User failed to respond

Okay so I have tried with a bunch of different people but I can't get video chat to work I keep getting the message that I failed to respond. I was able to user one of the appletest01 accounts and connected just fine but not to any real person. I have all my ports setup per ichat help guides and had a friend do the same for his but we couldn't connect.
Anyone know something we can try to get around this problem?

  • AV failure... "Failed to respond" error

Been suffering from this "failed to respond" error for attempted video connections for some time now. Never quite got a solution for it. I have a PB 12" and iMac mini routed at home through a Netgear WPN824 unit, and now adding a MacBook. We could AV chat at home b/n the Macs (no big deal) but just can't get a connection outside with my in-laws. We used to be able to do this successfully under an earlier version of 10.4.x, but this "failed to respond" error has plagued us for the last few 10.4.x OS versions.
I am just wondering if the Netgear router is an issue? Would a Linksys unit be the solution? Can anyone with a similar experience report whether the issue is somehow related to Netgear's implementation?
    Thanks.

    Hi Ralph,
    Thanks for your comment.
Somehow I'm very curious about this "did not respond" problem.
Especially since it is a problem that occurs not concistently.
It seems that it works now and then (ichat av), and very often it works
stable for quite sometime. Then suddenly the "did not respond" issue is back again and nothing can be done to fix it. When you try later (without changing any settings) it is working like it should again. So I would call it non-repeatable.
The problems started when osx updated to 10.4. I know it is not an elegant solution but the effort is minimum and the previous os is stable under any circumstance. Any idea when Apple has a fix for this, it is an Apple software problem. Can imagine it would save guys like you lot's of time and brainpain.

    JPM
    Hi Jan,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
That is one solution. Normally it is for devices
like the Zyxels that for some reason does not like
iChat on port 5190 or for modems that Port Forward
AND specify Protocols leading to conflicts when port
    5190 needs TCP and UDP.
As the original poster is connecting what looks like
three computers to the 'Net now he would be better
served by Port Triggering or UPnP.
As it is a Netgear it may need UpnP turned Off and On
twice before it works properly (Netgear quirk). If
he is using Port Triggering we will need to check the
    setigs he has.
Defcom has Netgear DG834 variant that works. I have
    a Linksys (Router) that works.

  • Yet another "fail to respond".....

I've had a look around on the posts and can't find a problem that quite matches this. I bought my parents a G5 iMac with an external iSight just over a year ago. We've been using iChat happily since then, til today.
Originally I had G4 iMac with iSight on panther. Since then we've both upgraded to Tiger, and I've upgraded to a G5 iMac 2.1 with built in iSight. Still no problems. Just after christmas I invested in a Zoom ethernet modem and tonight was the first time since then we've tried to iChat. Depending on who's trying to accept the chat, they recieve the message that they have failed to respond.
Both firewalls are off and encryption is not enabled. This would suggest to me that it might be my new modem. So I powered up my old G4 connected with my old modem, but still no audio or videochats, with the same error messages.
I don't see why I should be getting the same problem with my old set up too when it worked fine before (G4 running Tiger too).
    Any thoughts?

    HI Veeto,
Ok your parents may have set up Port Forwarding like this (I can not UPnP listed on this screen shots).
UPnP stands for Universal Pug n Play.
It is one means of making sure the Ports in a cable or ADSL modem are open.
Port Forwarding is another and Port Tiggering is yet another.
Sometimes a cabele modem can be set as a Straight through device much like a USB modem.
An ADSL modem is likely to come with some ports pen by default which allow you to Plug and Play with your Web broswer and Mail applications and Send and get files over FTP.
However iChat uses ports ports above the 1024 threshold for these open ports. This means you have to open the ports.
If you have the Access IP and Default Password and User ID for your 5660ADSL modem then you will be able to do the same.
The page I linked you to has all the ports you need for AIM and Jabber accounts to work.
This is on of the other Zoom's Pages for the same thing. Similar but different.
You should be able to work out how to set yours up.
Ideally you need to use UPnP or Port Triggering to use two computers at one location with iChat as these both allow multiple computer to use the same ports (Port Forwarding does not).
It might be you have newer firmware on your modem than is shown in these pics and you might have UPnP.
    http://www.zoom.com/techsupport/adsl/adsl_x3.shtml (Firmware page).
I do not see that it says it has UPnP on thier site.

  • I failed to respond (apparently)

    Hi
I'm running iChat 3.0.1 with an iSight on Tiger 10.4.2.
My provider is BT, and I have a BT Voyager 2000 wireless modem.
My tech friend has had a remote poke around inside the modem, and all the ports seem to be open.
I can iChat with family in Brazil, on both Macs and PCs (the quality is lousy with PCs, but that's another story), but I cannot make a connection to any other iChat users in the UK (nor they with me). I can't even connect with the Apple test cam on appleu3test03.
The error message generally says 'Failed to start Video Chat because Steven Blackman did not respond'
I've tried connecting with a cable to my modem, and turning off airport, but even that doesn't work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Paul,
Sorry it is not working for you.
Based on my testing, iChat AV works fine for most people if the computers at both ends are well maintained and if both ends of the connections meet all requirements.
What works for me is keeping MY Mac healthy and letting my chat buddies worry about their end. Those who really want to video chat are willing to perform the configuration and maintenance that may be required to get things working.
If your connection does not work correctly, both you and your chat buddy should test with others to determine which end of the connection is the problem. This obviates the need for BOTH of you do not need to "try everything."
For me, iSight is plug and play. So was iChat AV. I have done NO router or firewall configuration. My router is on Apple's list of iChat AV: Compatible Network Routers, and my Mac OS X firewall is ON with NO ports checked, opened, adjusted, or anything else. Many users who have other, newer UP-n-P routers also report no need to configure ports. However, some users are not so fortunate.
At this stage of internet video chat development, the fact that ports must be configured by some users of some communication equipment connected via some ISPs in some locations is not within Apple's control.
My best suggestions for those who are having difficulty with the Tiger version of iChat AV is still Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
You might also find some useful ideas in the other posts in Using iSight with iChat AV.
With that, you have my best ideas.
    Cheers,

Hi i am having problems when using ichat. When someone tries to connect to me and i click accept, they get message that i declined them, whilst i get message that i failed to respond. Am using BT VOYAGER 2000 wireless adsl modem with airport.....can anyone help please......thanks
....same problem when i try to connect with them, will not connect.

    Hi interscott1,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
This page Says the BT 2000 has UPnP. Turn this On and delete any settings for Port Forwarding you have done.
With the Airport Log on to it with the Aiport Admin Utility (In Applications/Utilities).
    Go to the Network tab.
    Deselect the Distribute Addresses option.
This will trun it in to a Wireless Access point and all the computers will then get their IP from the BT 2000.
Lasly make sure that System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab has the drop down set to match your download speed or a max of 1.5meg. AND iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down is set to NONE.
Now you should be good to go.

  • Failed to respond problems

After happily video conferencing with my Mum back in England (I am in Thailand) we have recently received the dreaded Failed to Respond regardless of which one invites the other. We eventually managed to obtain pictures by following some of the suggestions on the discussion but I think the main success was rebooting the router. Unfortunately whilst we can obtain two way pictures we can only obtain 1 way sounds depending upon who invites who.
Neither of us have touched our computers to make any changes and are both on the same latest versions of the software, Tiger and iChat so are wondering why this is happening now rather than before, any ideas?
My machine seems to have also taken to shutting down and restarting for no apparent reason including one time just completely freezing 'off' and not able to restart even after unplugging the power.
Surely this 'failed to respond' is something Apple needs to look into urgently as I am rapidly losing faith with the supposed 'plug and play' sales pitch when it seems anything but!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This failed to respond is as much an issue with the AOL servers that iChat has to go through as anything else. This has been discussed at length in the forum.
However, your system shutting down on its own is most likely not an iChat problem, and probably a power supply issue if not set up in your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Schedule button. This I would take up with AppleCare. There is an repair extension program for certian iMac G5s:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
See if your iMac G5 qualifies for it if you are not under AppleCare or the one year warranty.

  • "Failed to respond" cause has been found for me

I, like many of you, have been having problems with "xx failed to respond". I just found out from my ISP that the telephone company here (Pakistan) is blocking ports 5190 and 5060 which basically shuts down iChat and gives you that message. You can still text but audio and video are blocked. I guess they think I'll actually use the telephone and make them more money if they do this. The million dollar question...is there a way around this?

    The plot thickens.
My ISP is routing my traffic through a tunnel now. I downloaded IPNetMonitorX and the tests seem to confirm that the tunnel is functioning if I'm interpreting the program correctly. I used some of the IPNetMonitors features to trace the route and discovered that I'm getting at least a .25 second delay consistently between two servers. Would that kind of delay cause a timeout issue that would result in me "not responding?" See below:

The second thing I discovered is that when I traceroute to login.oscar.aol.com I get up to one of their internal servers and then it never makes it to the final destination. I'm not sure if that is a protection feature and should be considered normal. See hops 16-18 above.
I rechecked my connection speeds and I'm at 460 down/319 up. I've also bypassed all routers and I'm connected directly via ethernet to the dsl modem. I'm not sure what else to try. Hopefully Apple reads these pages and realize they have a real problem based on the number of posts.
