i have a macbook pro 15 inch. built in isight of course and my friend has a dell desktop.
we are trying to video chat and when i send him an invitation it comes "there was a communication error during ur chat" and it wants me to send to apple .
when he sends me an invitation i clicked acccept and it starts to connect but then it says <my name> didnt not respond.
are there any plugins for the PC that it needs. i went to teh apple store and some guys told me that the PC might need a netmeeting plugin.
any kind of help is greatly needed

To find where the issues lies, I would suggest focusing on one end at a time. With the Mac, try connecting to a user with no known issues http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html (Bottom of the page)
Once you have the Mac up and running with no issues, I'd focus on the Windows Machine. Are the proper router ports forwarded on the windows Machine? If your behind a router, you don't need the windows firewall, turn it off, along with any other firewall that may be installed.

There is a lot of talk aout there about using a 27" iMac as a display with the mini displayport to displayport cable. It is so exciting! I am trying to connect a PC laptop with a VGA port to a 27" Dell Latitude D620?

In 2010 there was a question about using a 27" iMac as a display with a Dell laptop.
I am trying to connect a work Dell laptop Running Windows XP via a VGA cable to my personal iMac 27"
running iMac 27", Mac OS X (10.6)
Has anyone tried this or know if imac 27" Mini port with a VGA adapter can work?

I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

Outlook 2010 sticks on "Trying to Connect" when undock Laptops and VPN Connects Automatically

When our users undock their laptops the VPN kicks in automatically. All of the other network services just continue seamlessly. Outlook, however, sticks at "trying to connect". This is often accompanied by a password prompt.
This is easily solved by closing Outlook and reopening it (no need to enter password).
It doesn't seem unreasonable that outlook should require a restart after being disconnected like this. Just want to establish whether there is a way to have Outlook just re-connect without the need to close it and reopen it. Or is the need to
restart it unavoidable?

This is really a question for the Outlook forum, but from what I have seen over the years, thats just the way it is with OUtlook and MAPI or Outlook Anywhere. When you change the network, Outlook struggles..
Having said that, MAPI over HTTP with Exchange 2013 SP1 is working to eliminate those issues:

Some users have an issue with the type of security method. Perhaps your laptop has some way of allowing you to also choose the security method prior to inputting the password. If you used WPA2 in setting up your iMac and AirPort base station, it may be that your laptop is not upgraded to include WPA2. WPA2 is currently the best to use, although not every computer or wireless router can handle it.
Another alternative is that you may have chosen to have a closed or restricted network. Undo (uncheck) that temporarily until you've established your laptop connection to the network. After that you might be able to successfully re-close your network.

Trying to connect an XP laptop to a Time Capsule

and having no luck.
This is an HP Pavillion dv8000 running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3
with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG WiFi thingy.
I have tried every driver update I could find. FOund a set of drivers and software at Intel that detected the band, mode, and everything from my Time Capsule, but the dang thing will not connect.
The router log from the TTime Capsule has an endless loop of these lines:

OK. This is extremely bizarre, but I finally got what I needed.
I am working with two WynDoze machines:
HP Pavillion dv8000 running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3
and
HP Mini 210-1091 NR NetBook running Windows 7 (Starter, I think)
I had to configure the XP box for WPA2-PSA/AES to get a connection
and
the Windows 7 box had to be set to WPA-Personal/TKIP to connect to the exact same network !

Ipad mini was locked and the wrong passcode was entered enough to disable it. Tried to connect to a laptop but it says it is locked and the passcode needs to be entered, but I can't because the device says it is disabled.

I tried next to put device into recovery mode and reset it that way but it still said the same thing, itunes says I need to enter passcode to unlock it but the iPad says it is disabled. What can I do next?

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...

Trying to connect second laptop wirelessly but can only use numbers in password field

I've connected my Mac and another PC to my Valet Plus with no trouble. The third PC, running Windows XP, can only be connected as a guest. When trying to connect to this laptop to the home network, the password will only accept numbers.
I've tried changing the PC's security settings, disabling the firewall, etc. Has anyone experienced this problem?

What is the service pack on your computer?
If it is windows XP service pack 1 then I think you will need to upgrade the OS to SP3. Because SP1 will not support WPA/WPA2 security mode.
When you install the router using Cisco connect, the wireless security on the router will be WPA/WPA2.

Trying to connect to wifi network hosted on PC

I'm trying to connect my Mac to the internet through the PC (since the Mac cannot detect the network the PC is connected to). I set up a wifi hotspot through Connectify, and sure enough it shows up in my Mac. Unfortunately, I get this window shown here: http://yfrog.com/jkmywifip.
Huh? This isn't a Mac I'm setting up the wifi on; how can I even use Airport utility? Why won't the iMac ask me for the password to the wifi connection, and why does it give me a PIN instead?
Please help; I really want to be able to access the internet on my Mac too instead of just on my PC.

Okay, so I've entered in my password with System Preferences instead. Now I get a sudden spike or two in trying to connect with my laptop PC (http://img836.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20100719at746.png/) before things turn into a plateau again. As this screenshot shows (http://img829.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20100719at746.png/), I seem to be connected but without any internet connection.
But Connectify on my laptop does think my Mac is connected/connecting (http://img839.imageshack.us/i/connect.png/), and internet sharing is turned on.
What else should I do? It seems my Mac is connected to the PC, but it still cannot access the internet.

UNable to connect 2nd HP laptop to Officejet Pro 8610

I have 2 HP laptops each with Win7 (64 bit) SP1 and I am trying to connect the 2nd laptop to an OfficeJet Pro8610 to print wirelessly. I have tried using the CD rom and downloading the drivers online but I cannot connect this laptop to the printer. I reach a point where the conncection process requires the printers claim id code but when I enter the code I have a message that this code is already in use (the other laptop is connected wirelessly) and in order to connect I must delete the other laptop. I'm at a loss here because I had connected both of the same laptops to my old OfficeJet 6700 and could print wirelessly from each without any setup issues at all. The code you are entering is likely for setting up the ePrint email address for the printer. Once this has been done it is not necessary to do it again. An alternative is that the laptop is connected directly to the printer wirelessly with wireless direct. In this case you would need to disconnect the laptop from the printer to use the other laptop. A better setup would be to connect the printer to your router wither wirelessly or by a hardwired LAN cable. This would give the printer an IP address that you can find by touching the printer front panel (if the printer is in sleep mode), then touch the wireless icon at the bottom of the screen. This will bring up the wireless LAN status where you can find the IP address of the printer. You should be able to set the printer up with the driver install wizard available from http://www.hp.com/go/tools.

Hi all, I know there are a few issues about connetcign to the hotspots - But I am able to conenct via the wireless on my iphone via a hotspot, but on my laptop I get the yellow circle with explantaion mark when trying to connect via my laptop (I am away from home for a few weeks) any suggestions, its says I'm connected to the hotspot but not the internet.

This document explains why IPSEC VPN clients don't work on Verizon 4g network.
Core Issue
The Cisco IPSEC VPN client is able to connect to VPN gateways without any issues over the Verizon 4g network. However once connected, the client is not able to pass any traffic at all. The counters on the client indicate that the client is encrypting data however, there are no increments to the decrypt counters. This issue is seen on the entire gamut of windows OSs. One of the deal breakers with the new Verizon 4g network is that the new LG VL600 and Pantech UML290 run a privately routed IP (10.) address that ONLY allows outbound traffic - no inbound traffic can be passed through. This means that if you have a need for remote access to a device, Verizon's new 3G/4G-capable devices will not allow you to access them like you could with a 3G-only modem.
Resolution
Based on suggestions made by Verizons it seems as though the following things need to be attempted:
1. enable Nat-T. For more information regarding nat-traversal please refer to the following documents:
     a. IPSEC over NAT-T on IOS devices
     b. IPSEC over NAT-T on ASA
2. enable IPSEC-over-TCP. For more information regarding enabling IPSEC over TCP please refer to the following documents:
     a. IPSEC over TCP on IOS devices
     b. Enabling IPSEC over TCP on ASA
3. Use Anyconnect rather than IPSEC
4. The other option is to go with the Sprint 4g network instead which apparently does support remote access to applications.

IChat error -8 when trying to connect with AIM

I tried to connect with an AIM user (on an XP) using iChat 3 for either video or audio chat, and in both got disconnected with error code -8 .
We actually never got connected - we could see the invitation, but the call ended as soon as we accepted it.
Both of us disabled the firewall before connecting, and we both have a pretty decent broadband service.

Any idea what it means, what causes it, and how to fix it?

Error -8 indicates that some of the necessary ports are not open.

But you might fare better with Skype instead. Download from www.Skype.com, one version for the Mac and one for the Windows machine.

How do I stop iChat/Address Book image picker attempting to connect to unavailable server?

I'm using Mac OS X Lion. In iChat, if I click on my personal image then select Modify Image, I get the image picker that allows you to change the image, take a picture from iSight, etc. In Address Book, I can get to this same or similar window when I double-click on the personal image placeholder.
In both cases, a spinner starts up in the lower left corner and after a few seconds I get an error stating that "the connection to server XXXX has failed." This message will pop up continuously until I close the program. The server that it is trying to connect to is a local Mac OS X Snow Leopard server that used to be part of the network but no longer exists.
By setting up a DNS entry to get it to attempt to connect to a server that does exist and using Little Snitch, I've been able to deduce that it is NetAuthSysAgent trying to make a TCP connection to port 139 TCP (netbios-ssn).
First, I find it odd that a Mac program trying to connect to a Mac server would use NetBIOS. I also find it odd that either of these programs would need to connect to the server.
I have a new OS X Lion server but I no longer join to its directory services. As the issue seems to be some configuration left over from when I was connected to that server, I tried joining the new server and then unjoining to see if that would clean up the settings, but that did not help.
Performing a find . -type f -exec grep -l "<server name>" {} \; revealed two files:
.viminfo
~/Library/Application\ Support/SyncServices/Local/TFSM/com.apple.Keychain/data.syncdb
The latter was a SQLite database that did not revel anything very legible.
I've search high and low for a setting that points to this old server name to no avail.

First off I want to thank you for sticking with me through this, it's nice to have somebody to shoot ideas around with, it made me think up ideas, what I'm trying to say is, by just writing this down in this thread I solved my own problem. Linc I already deleted almost all of the Login items previously, as I did have the same idea, that something in that spot was trying to connect to the desktop through the network, that didn't work, but for some people it could be a problem. When you first mentioned, "make sure that new windows don't open to a folder on the server.", that comment made me look around for any folders connected to the server, then in my last comment I mentioned the word "alias", turns out that was the problem. In my users folder on the Macbook Pro, I had 2 folders that were alias folders, one was the download folder and the other was the Movie folder, I made new folders and put copies of everything into the folders, then threw away the alias folders and renamed the two new folders I created with their original names, presto no more problem.
Must be getting old, cannot remember making any alias folders, but I probably did, probably had some great idea to save hard disk space on the Macbook Pro, only has 250 GB disk, the Mac Pro has over 8 Terebytes of space so I thought I'd use it probably, bad idea, sometimes I get too Geeky for my own good. Ethernet Connected Good, But iChat And MSN Messenger Won't Get Connected !

I'm now connecting through a Local Area Network Via Ethernet Cable, The Connection is good, and Safari had no problem to get into the internet, but the iChat and MSN Messenger won't get connected !
I use 2 account in iChat Which they are Mobile Me Account And GMail Account.
also I tried adium it still won't get connected.

thanks for replying me, yes i did authenticate my MacBook in hotel's network.
everything is fine, iTunes store work correctly, Safari work correctly, except for the IM apps aren't working.
when i switch to Windows VISTA everything work fine include Live Messenger, Skype....etc.

IChat 4.0.2 can't even connect for video chat

Greetings all,
I got a .Mac trial account so I could try and connect with someone who also has one and use iChat for the first time. However, the other person was saying they were sending me invites to join his videochat, but there were absolutely no notifications at my end. I also couldn't invite him, it just said something like,"trying to connect to..."
Are there settings I need to adjust, firewall etc?

If Allow Specifics is iChat in the List ?
Is iChatAgent ?
How are you allowing iChat to use ports in your routing device (modem or router or both) ?
