IChat AV 4.0.5 & U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg ADSL Gateway
Can someone help me open the right ports to get the Video Chat feature working.
I have no idea where to look in the Router's Webpage (http://192.168.1.1) to get this right.
I did try, previously but got it wrong and screwed the internet which took a further 2 hours to get working again.
Please please can someone help.
Seems UPnP(Universal plug-n-play) is on the LAN page SEE HERE

Connecting to US Robotics wireless router
When the network started up the morning everything worked fine until a tiny powercut outage, when everything restarted the PCs connected OK wirelessly to the US Robotics router but the two Macs (new macbook pro, new macbook) will just not connect. Airport sees the USR modem but simply comes up with a window saying "there was a problem connecting to USR650 cancel or retry". Same on both macs although both connect fine using ethernet cable. Also both were running on battery when the powercut came so they were not affected in any way.
Tried restarting everything, no change.
The US Robotics does not have any wep key nor encryption.
Everything worked fine before the tiny power cut, all the settings on the router are OK and unchanged from previous settings.
Mac OS X (10.4.8)I took a Netgear wi-fi router into the office and that connects fine so the problem is with the US robotics somewhere.
Just so I understand. Are you saying that your Macs can access the Internet when you substituted the Netgear for the US Robotics Wi-Fi router? If so, then it definately sounds like a problem with your US Robotics wireless capability. -
Repeater with Linksys for US.Robotics wireless modem
Hi everyone
I want to repeat my us.robotics wireless signal with linksys repeater. Can ı do this with linksys. This occur any problem? Which product ı must choose for linksys repeater?
thankshave you followed the instructions:-
Reverse Telnet from the PC to the modem.
Use a terminal emulation program on the PC, such as HyperTerminal, and access the PC modem through the COM port you connected to in step 1. Once you connect to the PC modem through the COM port, you need to apply the initialization string (see step 4). For an example, refer to the Example HyperTerminal Session section of Configuring Client Modems to Work with Cisco Access Servers.
Type this initialization string which writes the desired initialization string settings to NVRAM:
AT&FS0=1&C1&D2&H0&R1&B1&M4&K0&N6&W
Note: The 0s in this string are zeroes. See the Miscellaneous section of this document for information about initialization strings.
Note: You should receive an OK response from the modem. If the modem does not respond, verify that the modem hardware and cabling function correctly.
Enter this initialization string in order to disable Echo and result codes:
ATE0Q1&W
Change DIP switches 4 and 8 to down and keep the rest as up. Then power cycle the modem.
Unplug the rolled RJ-45 cable from the RJ-45-to-DB-9 adapter of the PC and attach it to the console port of the ASA.

Finally able to print through Wireless Router!! (USR MaxG)
So, after a full week of trying to get my printer to print wirelessly, I finally got it to work... but only after I had begun to write this post on the Apple Forums. So, since I felt like this post was extremely clear in the process, I'm posting it, in case anyone else has the same problem. I hope this helps someone, since it was impossible for me to find a post that really offered a clear explanation for how to print wirelessly...
Here's my post:
No matter what I do, I can't seem to print to my wireless router! Unless, that is, when I use my girlfriend's Windows computer. I'm able to print through the router to my printer via WinXP, but not OS X 1.4. Whenever I try to print in OS X, I get the error messages "Unable to find host..." or "Jobs Stopped."
Here's my hardware:
Router:
U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg Router (USR5461)
Firmware: 3.93.35.0.6 (Jan 5 2006)
Printer status: Ready
Printer location: http://192.168.2.1:1631/printers/My_Printer
Printer:
Samsung ML-2510
Computer:
MacBook Pro
OS X 10.4
Here's what I've tried to do most recently:
1) Applications> Utilities> Print Set Up Utility.
2) Click "Add Printer" in Printer List
3) Click "More Printers..." in print browser while holding down alt/option key
4) Select "Advanced in Pull down menu
5) Under Device, select Internet Printing Protocol using HTTP
6) Under Device Name, insert "My_Printer" (listed above)
7) Under Device URI, insert "http://192.168.2.1:1631/printers/My_Printer" (above)
8) Under Printer Model, select "Samsung ML-2510 series"
9) Click OK; make My_Printer default; and test print
Results:
(Printer actually prints) AMAZING!! I finally was able to get it to print. Apple forums is magical
Hopes this helps.Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out why I couldn't get my mac to print on the wireless router. I found your posting about 2 hours into my quest, and it took me another hour to finally realize I needed to update the firmware on the router. I was using something from 2005, so when I installed the update, your directions worked! I never felt so happy to hear the printer! :-D
If you hadn't posted this, I would have never figured it out...thanks again! -
Ok, this is REALLY weird.
Some details-
Me Leopard 10.5.2
Firewall= iChat enabled
Quicktime= None (streaming band width)
Internet sharing OFF
Links sys wireless router WRT54GSV4
Enabled Both UDP/TCP on 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
Enabled UDP only on 5060
nothing set up for 5220, 5222 (jabber- dont use it)
nothing set up for 5297-5298 (internal communication, not needed to outside world for iChat)
Router running in gateway mode with udpnp enabled.
Router serving as DHCP server computer is always getting internal address of 192.168.1.101
Cable modem plugs into router and thats it for the network.
NO I DO NOT have 101 devices... we just started at 100 for IP assigning (we have 2 computers, 1 PC 1 MAC)
Now, sad story please read on and offer your help.
I WAS (past tense) able to chat with another family member in VT who is also running leopard and who is using a NetGear wireless router (known good for iChat) .
Here is the story, sorry it is long but I hope someone will spot what I missed if I give enough details.
Prior to december 21st I was using my setup (leopard see above) and was chatting (always VIDEO) with parents in MN as well as other relatives in VT (we live in UT). Both of these people were running tiger, both using netgear wireless routers (different ISP obviously). Had an issue chatting to the individual in VT at first, but changed their iChat preferences under accounts to use port 1080 for the aim oscar login (from 5190) and it worked every time from then out... good nuff...
So, I go to MN for Xmas and find out we cannot chat from their computer to the one in VT, both were tiger... turns out I was upgrading the MN computer to leopard for Xmas... so I upgrade and its still not working. I went into the net gear router and endabled TCP and UDP on ALL the ports I listed for my set up (ALL Of them, even the Jabber and "Internal" ports). I set up the leopard firewall to enable iChat and set the quick time etc etc... and whalla it worked to chat to VT, but only if we the same computer initiated the chat, i.e. had to be from MN (leopard)===> VT (tiger) (I THINK... **** wish I remembered this).
ANyhow, we did not care, it was a temporary thing (my wife wanted to chat with her sister) so those computers did not really need to chat much and it was good enough for us ....
Now... we fly back to our house (NO ONE WAS THERE i.e nothing changed on the computer) and now we cannot chat to VT (runing tiger) but we could 8 days ago. So, I looked into the error messages... it initiates, starts and then ends the chats with an error -7 message and later yeilds an error -8. I know the -7 can be a time out so I check our true speed and found at least 1Mbps both here and in VT. I figured maybe a security update changed something either in leopard or tiger, so I carefully configured my firewall, quicktime, and router (as well, no one is internet sharing) and everything else I could think of (even switched off DHCP for a while) to NO avail. After all this I confirmed (1 minute ago) that I CAN chat back to MN which is now upgraded to leopard with the NetGear wireless router and all the ports open etc etc...
The computer in VT has the usual set up with the 10.4 firewall ports enabled according to the Apple SOP (read the document in apple support if you need to know what this looks like). It also is not internet sharing, its quicktime is enabled and the et gear router appears appropriately configured with TCP and UDP enabled on ALL the ports I listed under my set up (ALL OF THEM just in case)
I have tried enabling ALL of the ports (i.e. the jaber and internal ports.. but this is pretty stupid on my end since I am using LEOPARD and it only requires a single port to chat (starts at 16384 and goes up to 16403 until it finds one open), but I was not sure what happens with a leopard - tiger iChat so I tried it, still broken.
One potential clue (or a red herring?). My sister-in-law HAS to use port 1080 for the AIM login, if she tries 5190 she gets kicked of AIM immediately (YES her firewall is configured to let that out as well as the portforward (TCP and UDP) is configured on the netgear wireless router. This seems strange to me and I almost want to call her and double triple check that she has all this correct.. but IT WORKED 8 days ago (we used it literally 3-4 + days a week, it working was NOT a fluke).
Anyhow, sorry for the book. Any and all help appreciated I have tried to do my homework but am now stumped and hope I did not miss anything super obvious.
me
SO. . . .
What changed?
What is left to "fix" and most important
Who broke this so I can hunt them down (just kidding)... but seriously, what gives. Am I missing something OBVIOUS... like apple said we broke tiger too leopard chats and you have to buy leopard or something else reminiscent of the iPhone story (sorry, inappropriate jab, I just beat myself).Ok- obviously I was tired and did not communicate.
Here is the simplified problem.
We live in UT, my parents live in MN, my wifes sister and parents live in VT.
3 computers
UT= 10.5.1 iMac silver case new computer purchased with 10.5.0 and IMMEDIATELY upgraded to 10.5.1 prior to running a single app. LinkSys wireless running in gateway mode.
VT= Leopard iMac core duo white (last years) with NetGear wireless adapter
MN= Leopard iMac core duo white (last years) with NetGear wireless adapter
This is how it was prior to Christmas
WE left UT and flew to MN where one of the iMacs lives. We were able to (FINALLY) chat with the VT iMAC (still running leopard) after UPRGADING the MN iMAC to Leopard version 10.5.1 and making some changes to the router and Mac Firewall as well as quicktime streaming settings. Then the chat would work from MN-VT.
We FLEW home to UT, where our leopard iMac had been sitting gathering dust for 8 days. It no longer can chat with VT, but it can chat perfectly well with the MN computer, which of course is now running leopard 10.5.1
So- I can assure you nothing changed on my computer while I was sitting in MN eating Xmas dinner and the computer sat in an empty house in Utah. Nothing, I am told, changed on the computer in VT.. and I can still chat to MN
I tried to mark my replies with an asterics, strangely they are in the message when I try to edit it but I do not see them all in the post... so if you see them great... if not you will have to read to find my replies... sorry.
OK Solution(s)
Get all the routers set to do UPnP
*all ready there
On the Linksys this is in Adminstration.
Disable then Delete all the Port Forwarding you have set and Save Settings.
* this seems strange most iChat communication help messages start with the individual being told to put this in place. Tell me why this should be done, I am curious what you think is the issue here.
In the Netgears it (UPnP) should be in it's Own menu.
Delete (As there is no Disable) the Port Forwarding settings.
Save settings
* Again, I will try this since it obviously did not solve the problem but again, I am curious what you think the core issue is here.
In the Linksys go to the Security page and Disable the Anonymous Ping Blocking
Save Settings.
*No anonymous ping blocking setting there... but I disabled the filter anonymous requests line.
In the Netgear go the WAN pages and Disable the Dos (or SPI) line. It is a Check to Do this.
Also check the Box to Respond to Pings on the WAN port
Save Settings
Yes it is a good idea on the Tiger computers to have the Firewall On and the ports set.
TCP 5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298
UDP 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678 16384-16403
(this will include the ports from Leopard machines)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208
*Yes, I concur with your statement, this is why I told everyone this is what I have set up, its in the apple recommendations for iChat.
It is better that the Leopard Firewall is On and set to Allow Specific apps ans services.
If set before the 10.5.1 Update then delete the apps in the list.
Set to Allow All.
The set to Allow Specifics and re-add apps
This is because of a problem with the 10.5 firewall and settings being held over.
*not an issue, computer purchased with 10.5.0 and immediately upgraded but I all ready tried this anyhow, and its not the fix.
The port iChat uses to Login for the AIM server can be changed when not logged into AIM.
WE suggest port 443 as it is also used for Secure mail. In Tiger it means the port is likely to be open in the firewall for another app and not need setting.
*Great, that makes sense, thanks for your informative response.. I like to know why I am doing things, it makes me that much better fixing my own issues. Seriously
In Leopard the firewall works by Application and it will open any port the app uses. (it gets a"certificate" from the firewall).
* I sorta figured it worked this way or in some similar fashion when I configured it to allow iChat, this again makes sense but it is all ready in place.
In fact it is possible to log in to the AIM server on virtually any port.
*OK, for another time but is this relevant... why is it that the VT computer can log into AIM using 1080 but NOT 5190.. odd.. anyhow no need to reply if this is not relevant to me being unable to chat to VT but if you consider it worth pursuing let me know.
Some find for Tiger/iChat 3 that separating the UDP and TCP bits of port 5190 helps
*I will check this on her MAC firewall settings over the phone.
I think I have got most of this.
*My bad, it was a rather confusing post.. I hope I clarified
Thanks for you help so far.
Basically simplify things in the routers first.
Then recheck your Leopard settings as
1) you have miss-named them
2) possibly referred to other places
3) have not mentioned half of them.
Which other half would you be interested in?
I am making the changes and will reconfirm everything above and post my chat status... working with computers now.

IChat to PC-AIM Video not working - even dialup
I know that this a common problem, but I cannot find any solutions in this group. MacBook Pro 10.4.6, iChat to PC. My side is Mac, wireless via Airport and a dlink ADSL Modem/Router. I can chat with video with no problems to either another Mac or PC at home. I cannot however use video with my brother using his PC - refused or cancelled the conversation/failed to respond. We both forwarded all ports (1000-65535), or alternatively used DMZ, but to no avail.
To exlude the router as a problem I have used dialup between both my own PC & my Mac. Still same errors. I have disabled firewall on both Mac & PC, deleted iChat preference files.
I'm at a loss. I have tried video with RjinWI PC - I can see this fine from my own PC (networked or dialup), as can my brother from his PC, but I cannot see RjinWI PC from my Mac (failed to respond).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6) Mac Mini G4, iBook G3Hi,
I am jmtuggey's brother. We've been trying this evening with various settings and computers. We've managed to get iChat video working on both his iMac and a Mac Mini to both my iBook and various PCs. However, his MacBook Pro will only work with my iBook - any attempt to connect to the PCs fails as detailed above.
We've gone over the Mac firewall and enabled the correct ports, and even disabled his firewall.
RJ in Wi - we have both turned our Quicktime streaming settings off automatic but this has had no affect.
I simply cannot understand what is going on here. It seems very likely that the fault lies in the MBP, but as to what exactly is wrong with it is beyond either of us.
Any ideas?
MacBook Pro/iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6) -
IChat used to work fine but not any more - suggestions?
I've used iChat for about 1 year very successfully but recently video chat has stopped working. I have a MacBook Pro that doesn't work and a PowerBook where it still works fine.
Both have the same system and iChat software. Both are on the same wireless network. The Powerbook can connect to collegues and also the Apple test users (appleu3test01, 02, 03 etc.) while the MacBook Pro no longer connects although it used to connect just fine.
Symptom: I've tried having the MacBook request a conference with the PowerBook and the PowerBook never realizes that the MacBook requested a conference. When I try to initiate the conference from the PowerBook to the MacBook the MacBook never acknowledges that there has been a request. If I try to connect to appleu3test01 iChat on the MacBook displays
"Waiting for response..." for as long as I leave it the request window open.
It seems my MacBook Pro can no longer initiate nor recognize a video chat. (text chat works fine)
Given the above situation I have not tried to modify my router settings nor look into what my service provider might be doing - after all, everthing is still working great on one of my Macs.
All I have done is to try the old school Mac trick of deleting preferences. Specifically the com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist, com.apple.iChatAgent.plist, com.apple.iChat.plist plists. That made no difference.
If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advanceI share that funny feeling but:
10.4.3 is to long ago for me to know whether it is within reach of the backward compatibility specifics of 10.4.10, the machine specifics, the routers settings and it's performance in combination with the italian provider and the policy they have towards their subscribers. Just to give an example, apparently the Powerbook does video chat, the MacBook doesn't The QT version that currently is downloadable has system requirements that ask for 10.4.9 as a minimum. And that is just a detail.
A little change to your settings could solve this, but I advice you to to a reset of your network hardware, and update them one by one to the current release versions of their hard (firmware) and software. Check the site of the ISP and router for advise on their current network mode. Write down their details, and your required input network access. Unplug the devices. Leave them a good 15 minutes to power completely down. The device that comes first in contact with the internet connection needs to be plugged in first. Wait till the lights are blinking stable, now connect your MacBook Pro direct to the Ethernet port of the Modem (?) and log in to the interface of the device by typing it's IP address into Safari. Choose easy set up, and you will be asked to input the information you have previously checked on your ISP's site. Check if the firmware corresponds with the version you looked up on their site. It probably will mention if there is new software available and it will take a minute. After the device has restarted, connectivity is confirmed. Click an internet site in safari, and walk through the network diagnostics windows to set up a stable network conform ISP advice. Now the second mac needs to start, select a site in safari, if it needs diagnostics it will ask, respond in accordance to join the network you just have set up.
Some possible trouble causes to look at as well:
Channel settings used by the american sold Extreme is not set to a number that the Italian bought Express automatically switched to as interference was eminently asking for. (Or vice versa and variations on the theme)
Encryption running on the MacBook Pro could cause the problem etc.
The MacBook Pro has an Extreme card. The Powerbook has an Express card.
The Extreme is limited to the performance of the Express now.
Check the help feature as well, open iChat, select help in the top menu.
You need to have a valid internet account, and current up to date software & firmware.
Hope it covers your issue but if it is not solved please post back: Firewall or router settings are likely to cause these problems as well. I am not very good at those. -
IChat AV worked - but not anymore!
Hello,
A week ago I tried to do my first iChat AV session with my new internet set up:
iChat Version 4.0.8 (619)
iMac IC2Duo 2.4 Ghz (with Airport card) runing OS X 10.5.8
Airport Express in bridge mode (I love AirTunes!)
Gateway 2wire 2701HG-G wireless modem (ADSL in DHCP)
Since it did not work, I did some reading on the Apple Forums. I managed to reboot the modem, set up 'Port Forwarding' for that modem and bingo: iChat AV worked beautifully, with my Apple firewall on (but allowing iChat connections) and Screen sharing on. I could even see my friends' screen, a beauty!
But now, 6 days later, iChat AV no longer works. iChat text works fine. I can't even do a session with Appleutest3test02.
I think it has to do with DHCP leases b/c as I look through my Mac's and modem's configuration, I noticed one (or more) of the IPs changed. The modem is set to release it's IP Lease every 72 hours, some that probably messes it up.
I've been trying to read some more, but this one is beyond me: I'm stumped. I'm not sure if I can/should make the modem stick to a single IP + I don't know how to 'reset' my Mac's/iChat's/Airport's settings to allow the new IPs.
Hopefully someone knows how this works (below is the Error report without the binary image descriptions)
Thanks ahead of time!
Marc

[]Hi,
In most cases the ISP uses DHCP to give your Modem an IP - called your Public IP.
In the case of a cable modem it is likely that it does not route and will pass the Public IP on to the next device, computer or router.
A DSL modem might well route.
So if the modem routes it will not pass the Public IP on and will issues a set of LAN IPs to a router or computer.
By Default it will be set to Issues the IPs automatically using DHCP.
Routers and computers by default ask to get an IP by DHCP.
Routers and modems recognise not to pass on Public IPs when the route. However they will pass on LAN IPs meaning you can have your computer getting two IPs from a modem that routes and a router that is in between.
There are several ways to stop a modem or router issuing IPs to computers.
On some modems you can put them in to what is called Bridge Mode. Effectively all routing action is stopped and it becomes like the older dial-up modem except it is most likely Ethernet cables running to it.
You can also set it to Static Routing. In This DHCP is turned off in the Modem or router and you manually enter the info several text fields on the computer or router that comes next.
You need the IP of the Routing Device (Sometimes called Gateway IP) and the Subnet Mask and DNS servers info. You then choose the IP that the computer or router is going to use. (Like the Pic I showed earlier).
There are limited set of IPs that are reserved for LAN IP addresses.
Anything start 192.168.xxx.xxx
Anything starting 10.xxx.xxx.xxx
A range between 172.16.xxx.xxx through to 172.32.xxx.xxx
(In these cases xxx stands for a number between 0 and 254 or 1 and 255 - there are only 255 numbers but some go 0 to 245 and some 1 to 255)
Having two DHCP servers on your LAN is considered to be not good Networking.
A small number of routers can be put into Bridge Mode - like Airport devices - which then leave the Modem, if it routes, doing DHCP.
Pause.
<hr>
Ok. In setting this up you may lose Internet Connection at various stages whilst you set things up.
Lets take a Cable Modem first that does not route.
We do not have to worry about anything until we get to the router to computer part (provided you have Internet Connection AND can Web Browse and get Mail in your favoured Apps)
IF the Router does UPnP or in the case of an Airport Device, Port Mapping Protocol (PMP or NAT-PMP) then this can be used as both methods allow the apps to have the ports they want open and will also allow Multiple Computers to use the same ports - so if the IP changes then the computer and app can still work.
Lets presume we want to set Static (Manually on the Mac) routing anyway.
In the case of the Airport Base Station this is fairly simple.
You go to Applications/Utilities on the Mac and a open the Airport Utility.
If several Airports show Up then you select your one.
You then use the Edit Buttons to get to the Internet iCon Pane.
At the bottom it has a drop down which by default is set to Share a Public IP (it presumes a Cable modem but will share the the IP (Connect computers to the IP) it is getting Upstream side).
You needs some info first from the top part of the Screen.
DNS Server, Subnet Mask and the IP the Airport Base Station is using on the LAN Side (It will be one of the ranges shown above - older models tend to be 10.0.1.1 and later ones 192.168.1.1)
You can now set "Share A Public IP" drop down to "Bridge (Off) Mode.
You will now lose the Internet.
On the Mac In System > Preferences > Network you need to select either Ethernet or Airport depending how you connect to the Airport Base Station.
Set the drop down to Manually.
In Ethernet you can enter the Info in the required boxes.
In Airport you have to use the Advanced Button and then the tabs.
You can then choose the IP to use.
If the Airport is at 10.0.1.1 then it can be anything between 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.1.255 (The first three give you the range of IPs and must match the first three of the Airport Base Station's number. You cannot chose the IP the Base Station has or exceed the 255 number (or 254 on ones that use zeros).
So from the top in Ethernet it will read:-
Manually in the drop down
192.168.1.2 (Presuming the "Router IP" is 192.168.1.1)
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 (this is a common example)
DNS Servers 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3 (these are two Public DNS Servers but your modem should make your ISP's appear in the Airport Base station from the ISP)
Router IP = 192.168.1.1 (in this Example).
You should now have the Internet back.
Repeat on other computers.
Re 1)
Lease times.
Most devices will drop the Lease only when the computer is turned Off and left Off past the lease time.
Also most will have a setting that may read shorter but is continuous.
On some devices you can set Reserved IPs for the relevant Card on the computer (Airport or Ethernet) by it's Individual ID called it's Media Access Card address, MAC in capitals for short). The naming of this Reservation can vary device to device (infinity, Reservation, Extended Lease).
Re 2) I think I have covered this above.
Re 3) as I have said the Lease time is not so important.
If you have several computers it can pay to turn them on in the same order if you turn them Off or set Static/Manual routing.
Re 4) IPv4 and IPv6 actually give your Ethernet card two MAC addresses.
This can create issues if your ISP supports IPv6.
It can pay to turn this Off.
What we need to know here is what is the modem doing as far as routing is concerned ?
If you have a cable modem that does not route and the Airport is in Bridge Mode then you should see the Public IP from the ISP.
Tell us the first two parts of the Number please.
Re 5)
Not all devices do permanent Linking of MAC addresses or even computer/router names to hold IPs as you can set Static Routing.
Re 6)
It will be easier if you tell us the Device Make and Model number as there are site where we can link you to Pics. (and look at wording ourselves)
Re 7)
This has too many variables based on the answer to 6) and the semantics of different device manufacturers to offer a clear answer here.
Going back to my Pic though, you can set the number of IPs in the DHCP range on some devices.
You can in fact use a mixture of Static IPs and a reduced range of DHCP Issued ones.In this case it may pay for you to post a pic On-Line somewhere for us to see or email a me a pic of the Screen Shot of that page. (my email can be found clicking my name on the left).
Summary,
I think I have covered the broader bits you have not discovered yet although I have left out about which ports are open by default if you are not using UPnP in the modem.
(I have also written with an eye to other readers and other devices)
I have listed the way to set Static routing.
Using UPnP does away with worrying about the IP changing in the set up you describe.
The IP changing only becomes important if the modem is using Port Forwarding to open the ports for iChat (Or it's extreme form of DMZ).
Could you confirm that this is what you are doing ?
Can you answer the question or post new ones if you have not under stood anything ?
Basically Routing DSL modem to Airport in Bridge Mode to computer is good.
It will be about how the ports are opened that will govern how you proceed from here.

Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat" -
Whenever I try to start an iChat Session with my parents (or they try to start one with me), it freezes immediately on my side and my parents and we're both getting a communication error -20. The problem occurs both on their old iMac G5 and their new Intel iMac (running v 4.0.5), so it would seem network related. I'm running v. 3.1.9. We're both using Comcast (I'm in Pittsburgh) and they're in Portland, OR. I'm able to connect to with other iChat users, so I'm guessing the problem is on my parents side, rather than mine. They're using a Comcast provided Netgear Wireless Cable modem gateway CG 814 WG v2 (which I think is the root of the problem). Below are the two error logs from both our our sessions - the first one is from my parents and the second is mine. Also, for System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming we're both set at 1.5Mps T1/Intranet/LAN.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Scott.
I'm posting my error log as a reply to this post because the message is too long.

Having trouble connecting to AIM on iChat, adium and AIM
hi guys,
as the title states, i am having a **** of a time connecting to ichat through my wireless connection!
i recently moved and have a new ISP provider (qwest). i have contacted them regarding port forwarding/firewall settings and they assured me that there is no problem with their modem. i tested this out by connecting my macbook directly to the modem, and i was able to connect to ichat.
next, i adjusted settings on the motorola wireless router (model wr850g), turned off the firewall, port forwarding, UPnP! this didn't help at all. i contacted motorola and they assured me that it was not their product that was causing my connection problems and it was the settings on my mac.
now, i have been able to connect to ichat when using a linksys router right out the gate, so all the firewall settings that i adjusted in the system preferences was new to me. so i followed all the directions there about sharing and firewall and performed all necessary steps, and i am still having problems.
i am able to browse the internet, but things like azureus, ichat, adium, and aim are not working.
before i contact apple regarding this issue, i wanted to see if there was anybody with the same type of problem. i have searched the forums the past 2 days and could not find anything regarding this problem. please help.
the model of the qwest router is
actiontec gt-701
motorola wr850g
thank you
macbook Mac OS X (10.4.10)Hi mrayatpa,
Both these devices have variation model numbers on this Page
http://portforward.com/routers.htm
It would be best if one was not doing DHCP.
Preferably the modem should have DHCP turned off then the router should be set to ask to use a Static IP to the Modem.
This will stop the computer being in two DHCP subnets that overlap and is probably the cause of the problem.
As iChat uses ports above 1024 that need to be opened or allowed this needs sorting.
Web Browsing and mail apps use ports below the 1024 mark and are not routers as such hence the reason the work no matter what the set up is (or how many subnets are involved)

Invisible status with ichat & ichat losing connection
hi everyone.
first, i have ichat AV and i was curious if there is a way to have invisible status like i can with adium. and just out of curiosity, does the windows version of AOL allow its user to choose to be invisible? when i used a pc, i didn't use AOL.
and second, if i leave ichat on for a while, it has a habbit of disconnecting. i use ichat on my powerbook g4 and is connected wirelessly to an airport express. regardless of wireless security, i get this symptom. wireless security is 128 bit WEP, 802.11b/g, airport base station v6.2. the only alternative is to hard-wire my laptop to the network, which defeats the purpose of wireless! i'm just wondering if anyone else has this issue as well.
thank you for your time.no, the computer is set to stay on 24/7. no sleeping, no harddrive spin down, even the screen stays on. i Do, however, have 2.4ghz cordless phones in my home, so that could be a culprit. thanks for your prompt response. i've read a lot of your posts, you're very helpful!

"Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server"
I just bought my iPhone. The first time I attempted to log onto my home wireless network (US Robotics Wireless Router) the iPhone performed perfectly. However, the next time I attempted to logon and surf it gave me the "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server" error message. I tried a variety of things which didn't work. I called the Apple Tech Support. Turning off the router and rebooting it was the only thing that worked. I thought my problem was resolved because after cycling the router the iPhone worked great once again. But . . . later the same day I attempted to connect to the router and the same thing happened and I got the error message. I attempted to power cycle the router just like before but this time it did not work! Help! Bad router? Wrong settings on router or iPhone?
Do you have other wireless devices connected to this same router? Do they work?
I really can't help you much but to say that when my router exhibited this issue it was accross the board (all notebooks would connect immediately following a router restart, but would loss connectivity until I rebooted the router again). In my case the only solution that was permanent was to replace the router.
You may also try restarting the phone and the router, setup security - WEP - (or disable security) on the router and phone, and/or try a different wi-fi channel (may actually help). -
Cannot Connect to other computers on my router
I have a u.s.robotics sureconnect 9106 (adsl modem and router - the same as
9105) and wanted to hang another pc with xp pro to my xp pro machine. So
i connect the two via ethernet cable to the router, but i am able
to ping the other machine and to use ftp but neither of the two can see
the other in windows xp pro
the same with a osx machine witch i connect for checking itunes or sharefolders
I also try my xbox with xbmc for sharing and streaming my itunes songs
but it doesn't work at all, even after i open the two ports asked by
itunes - i also deactivated outpost but that neither helped - the
strange thing is that in the outpost/system/lan-settings outpost can't
even see the other machine
I can also ping it and ftp, but nothing more
when i try to connect then outpost ask me if i want to allow it and
afterwards when i try to close itunes then it says that another user
is in my library but the xbmc says that it couldn't connect...
what have i forgotten?
I not read here that the port 5353 should be udp and i have only give the tcp port free but after changing to udp itunes not even told me on the exit that another user has access to my database
ah well i have on my router a virtual server with the same ip as my
computer (192.168.1 ist the modem 2 ist my computer and the virtual
server and 3 is the other computer) and there i set the port holes for
the nat service (itunes etc) BUT i think because of that i have
in the network connections not even a internet-gateway but only
the ethernet connection
I installed xp pro new, but then the gateway only appears for some
seconds and then disappear. But lately for a while it appears but after
some time it disappears - maybe its because i try this time not to give
my machine a fix ip and then its possible that the gateway appears when
I have another ip than the virtual server on my router, and that then
outpost also recognize the other computer?
any idea what i did wrong, or i have forgotten, i really haven't a clue
what to to and i never haven't heard that when you have a virtual
server (nat) then its not possible not to connect to others
computers...
thanks for your patience
adrianBought my iMac in February and worked fine up until about a month ago. I have assigned a manual IP address outside the range of other devices in my network (e.g. 192.168.0.10) and this seems to do the trick (most of the time). The problem I had was the self assigned IP address wasn't in the usual range for my router so while I was connected to Airport and the internet I couldn't view any webpages. Had to do the same thing to my Macbook which I purchased about a month ago.
The strange and very frustrating thing is sometimes it doesn't recognise my preferred network but then when it asks me to join a network, my network appears! When I try to connect and confirm password, connection times out. Whats that all about?
The bottom line is the assigned IP solution doesn't always work but it seems a combination of issues rather than one. None of the other devices on my network (ReadyNas Duo, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii etc) have issue connecting to the router using DHCP but for some reason Airport has trouble dealing with this and assigning a correct IP or can't find the network all together.
Only thing I can think is its some Airport update that has caused these intermittent issues and realy hope they fix it soon.
So no update but just wanted to share my experiences in what seems a very wide scale issue... -
Planatronics Wireless Headset..
I recently purchased the Plantronics .Audio 995 wireless usb headset. It claims it works on both Windows and Macintosh. I have used Plantronics headsets in the past and they have worked fine with iChat.
This headset will not give me any audio output in iChat. The mic works in iChat. I have both chosen in the iChat preferences, however, the sound does not work.
This headset works fine using Skype, Garage Band, and Rosetta Stone, the sound works with iTunes.
The only problem I have is the sound output in iChat.
Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions?
I called Plantronics and they said since it works with skype, it's not the headset, it's iChat.
Thanks
Message was edited by: greyeyedI do have wifi turned on, on my router, however, my computer is hardwired to it via cat5 ethernet cable. The wifi is only used by the iPhone. My mouse is wireless as well. Everything else is hardwired.
I tried to see what I could do with the MIDI Sound Utility.
First, I could not change the 16000.0 Hz that was the only option available and I could not change it by choosing another option or typing over it.
I also tried to create an Aggregate Device and combining the both into One Device. I got a mismatch message so the only way I could Make them match was to back the speakers off to match the mic, by changing the 44000.0 Hz to 16000.0 Hz. However, iChat would not allow me to choose the Aggregate as an option.
I did set the computer to use the wireless headset as my sound output and sound input. I set iChat to use the wireless headset as my sound output and sound input and when I received a call I heard it RING through the wireless headset, but when I answered, no sound at all.
I am wondering if it's because it's showing up as two devices if iChat is confused and only giving me the wireless mic as an option for both input and output. I just don't understand why it works everywhere else and not with iChat. As no one else seems to have this problem, maybe it's time to call AppleCare.
I did try talking with Plantronics and they say their product is working, it's a problem with iChat. They do not test with iChat and have no information, I have to go to Apple for help.
Thank you for your time and patience and suggestions. Have a lovely day. -
My video starts out okay then quickly disintegrates to a very delayed signal. I checked Audio, Connection Doctor, and my bit rate and frame rates are about 1/10 the rate they should be.
I have checked with Apple tech. support and they have no answers. I checked with my local Apple retail store and they had no answer. It's as if my connection to the internet is being squeezed and only allowing the data through at a very reduced rate.
Any suggestions??This is very frustrating,
I have the same problem with frame rate dropping to almost standstill after a few seconds. The other end is fine.
I am using iChat on my Mac mini on the same wireless network (under Leopard) with no problem so no issues with ISP, Modem/Router.
I've played with the QT settings as suggested but no luck.
This happened a month or two back and just as I was cloning the system, my hard drive died. I thought the flaky behaviour might have been related to the drive as when the new drive went in things were resolved. Now I've mysteriously got the problem back.
I've reverted to a known good system copy with no iChat/QT plug-ins and the problem is still here. I'm on 10.4.10 on my PowerBook.
iChat was the only reliable contact that my kids here in Oz have with their Granny in the UK. It drives me mad that this has become so unstable!

IPod cannot be updated "Error -48" - Please help.
I'm so frustrated. Got my brand new ipod 80gig 5G and for the fourth time in it's first week, I've got an error message and can't add any songs, files etc to it. The only way to solve it is to restore it to factory settings erasing the ipods drive. C
