IChat AV 4 Menu Bar Buddy List Ordering

On Leopard with iChat AV4, in the windowed Buddy List you can change the ordering under the View->Sort Buddies->(By Availability, By First Name, By Last Name, Manually). However, it appears that the menu bar Buddy List is always sorted by First Name. I don't understand why they don't use the same sort setting, or if it's intentional for that to be distinct, how does one change the sorting on the menu bar list?

This list in the Menu bar can not be changed.
It would be nice if it sorted by Group as well as by Name.

  • IChat Icon in menu bar unresponsive~ Suggestions/fixes?

    Hey all, 1st post here!
I have a problem with my ichat icon in my menu bar- it highlights when clicked, but does not unfold into the menu that it is supposed to access... Any ideas/suggestions?

    Hi Heady1701,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
I would start with going to iChat Preferences > General section and turning the Menu Bar Icon Off.
Does this make the icon disappear from the Menu bar ?
If it does not delete com.apple.ichat.plist
This requires you go manually to your Little House iCon/Lirary/Preferences as Spotlight does not look in here.
Restart iChat if you have to delete the .plist
If it does remove itself from the Menu Bar then try resetting it and using it again.
It may help if we also had more info.
Is it Greyed Out when you are Logged Off the Buddy lists ?
(IT should show just Saved Status Messages)
If you are logged into AIM or Jabber (GoogleTalk) it should show the Buddy list that would be front (it is the top one in iChat > Preferences > Accounts which can be dragged in iChat 4 into any order)
(i.e. There are two menus it could show you depending if you are logged in already)

  • Menu bar account listing--want it to show up!

My family of seven has seven accounts on each of our two iMacs. In five of the seven accounts, in the upper right of the menu bar, you can see the name of the account that you're on. If you click that, you get a list of all accounts and can switch accounts from there. On two of the accounts, this doesn't appear on the top right of the menu bar. Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you!

From "Help" in the Finder window, search for "fast user switching":
To turn on fast user switching:
Open System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
    Click Login Options.
    Select "Enable fast user switching."
On my computer I have to click on my user name to see the list of users. Is the user's name appearing in the affected accounts? I haven't experimented with this one but are you using some form of parental controls on the accounts or simple finder or something else that might be influencing the normal Finder windows?
I notice you are running 10.4.10. You might consider updating to 10.4.11. I don't know if that is related to this issue. The 10.4.11 combo update link for [Intel Macs|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html]

  • Ichat buddy list will not open.

I have a brand new macbook and have used ichat successfully. Today my buddy list will not load when i open the application. to the best of my knowledge, my buddylist is not set to hide or anything. I restarted my computer, and turned it off, but the problem continues.
So the application appears to be open on my top menu bar... but not buddy list? help?

    You need this FAQ http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1486891
For this you needs at least your Install Disk and a download of the Combo Version of the last OS Level Update you did.
You may need Pacifist but the FAQ has a Link.

  • IChat automatically deleting newly added buddy.

When I tried adding a new buddy today on iChat using the add buddy shortcut the buddy appeared as online, the name flashed a couple times, and then was removed from the list. I have tried to add this buddy multiple times with the same result. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

    Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • How do I change the resolution of the menu bar at the top of the window (Firefox menu button, tabs, URL, Google search box, and bookmarks toolbar)?

I am using the latest version of Firefox. Yesterday, I came to work without my contact lenses so I magnified my screen resolution in the main control panel settings to blow everything up. I have since reverted back to the default settings on the computer.
In Firefox, I also was magnifying the screen as I visited various websites (Ctrl+plus). Today, the websites themselves are displaying perfectly fine.
The problem is everything above the website, in the menu bar, as listed in the question above. The font size is incredibly small and I am not finding a way to revert back to default resolution. Any help?

Thank cor-el. Turns out that, in the end, it was a DPI settings issue. Problem solved... thanks!!

  • Menu bar acting up

Sometimes Safari or itunes or iphoto quits on me and the menu bar starts acting wierd. For example I click on "File" or "Edit" or "View" or "window" or "help" on the top menu bar (while there is no application opened) and the list comes down but it is empty. Also clicking the little "apple" in the menu bar the list comes down but it is empty or some times the list comes down but incomplete wording. For example I will see: Ab;ut th*s M/c, -- Re'/;rt brrrs t;'; apl'e -- etc etc.
Please help i have already used anti virus and did not find any.

Ivan:i have already used anti virus and did not find any. There is no need for av software with Mac OS X. There is not known virus for Mac OS X.
Boot from your Panther install disk holding down the "C" key. Go to the installer menu and open Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left panel and First Aid in main panel. Click on Repair Disk. If DU reports errors report again and again until no errors are reported. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    Good luck.

  • Is it possible to customise the tab/address/menu bar positions? I dislike the default position changes.

Similar to MS Office, one can position all the menu bars in any order, top down or sideways as required. I find that with ver 4, the tabs on the top line , the search, home buttons etc are not intuitive and are quite annoying with their positional changes.

You can still use/see the Menu Bar (''File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help'') if you prefer it:
*'''Temporarily display the Menu Bar''': press the ALT key or the F10 key and make your selections from the temporarily displayed Menu Bar
*'''Toggle between the Menu Bar and Firefox button'''. Do one of the following:
    **NOTE:
***Menu Bar '''checked''' = Menu Bar on, Firefox button off
***Menu Bar '''un-checked''' = Menu Bar off, Firefox button on
**keyboard shortcut: HOLD the ALT key while pressing the letters VTM on your keyboard
**Using the Menu Bar: click View > Toolbars, click Menu Bar
**Using the Firefox Button: click Firefox Button > Options, click Menu Bar
**right-click on an empty space in one of the toolbars, click Menu Bar

  • Strange: Mac screen menu-bar requires max-heap-size to be set.

I planned to omit the max-heap-size attribute in the line of my jnlp file
    <j2se version="1.6+" max-heap-size="256m" />
The idea was that with Java 1.6 the heap size is set automatically
    according to the client's RAM.
Unfortunately, the Macintosh screen menu-bar works if and only if the max-heap-size attribute is present.
    It is a MacOsX=1.4 with Java1.5.
Strange, since the Mac runs Java 1.5 and I am talking about settings for 1.6.
The jnlp passed ValidateJNLP at http://mindprod.com/jgloss/jnlp.html#VALIDATION
Here is another post stating that attributes in JNLP have side effects on Mac's screen menu-bar:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/Java-dev/2008/Jul/msg00122.html
    Here is my jnlp:
    w3m -dump http://www.bioinformatics.org/strap/strap.jnlp
Is there an explanation for this?

    3. Move the changes to the Mac VM...somehow.

If the jdk would be smaller, less redundant and clearer, then
open JDK could be possibly compiled on a Mac.
Not sure what that means since there are likely OS level calls that must be implemented in some place in the API. Which are specific to Mac.
Just as there are differences between windows/solaris/linux which Sun accounted for.
And that would be what Apple would have done to make it work on Mac. And what someone (someone who likes Mac) will need to continue to do with the public release (explusion?) which is the form that Java will have going forward.
The main thing that should be improved on a Macintosh
is to directly allow for Linux and Solaris executables such that the Linux JDK could directly work on a Mac.The main thing, again, is the Apple is no longer supporting Java on the Mac.
And Apple, not Sun and certainly not Oracle, were the ones that created the Java VM.
So the main thing at this point is that ALL future directions that Java take are dependent not on Apple but on the Macintosh community. That includes features as well as fixes.

  • Ichat drop down menu from menu bar shows up in the wrong place.

I'm not sure how this happened, but for some reason, ever since I've moved to college, my Ichat drop down menu from the menu bar shows up on the left side of my screen, and you can only see half of the menu. I don't know how to fix this problem so if anyone could help me out that would be great.
    Sincerely,
    Cody Martin

    Yep.
Go to the Buddy List Status Message and option the Edit option.
Delete that Status Message that you have that is over 42 characters.
Ones of about 60 or more will introduce the "Left Shift" (And the fact the drop Down may line up with the right hand edge of the Menu Bar icon on in-between lengths)
In Snow Leopard it is possible to have a Long Message that displaces the Drop Down Off Screen.
The other factor is the order of the Menu Bar Icons on that side of the Screen
The iChat one can be Dragged if you use the Apple (CMD) key.
If the Drop Down can not fit the message in before the right hand edge of the Screen it will displace.
Having a Second mac User Account and deciding to Display which mac User is Logged in can give you some extra "space"

  • Ichat opens but no buddy list

When I open my ichat application, ichat shows up in the menu bar with all of the options, but my buddy list no longer shows up. I'm guessing I'm also not signed on. Help!! It was working fine yesterday, so I don't know what changed.

    Hey, thanks for replying.
I'm going to take this bit by bit.
-So iChat Launches and appears in the Menu bar.
-The Buddy List does not Appear.
-The Window menu in the Menu bar does not list the Screen name and a KeyStroke option.
Yes to all of these, this is exactly the case.
-Going to iChat menu and the Accounts option there does not show any Buddy List ?
    -Not even Bonjour ?
Yes, there is no Buddy List, not even Bonjour.
-In that case is the iChat > Preferences > Accounts showing any Screen Names/Accounts set up ?
-(I see on second reading you say this option appears greyed out)
Indeed, preferences will not open. I even tried using the hot key :'(.
-Ok go to your Home Folder
    -Open the Library/Prefernces
-Set the view option in the FINDER to Columns and then Use the Quick Look option on
    - com.apple.ichat.plist
-Near the top does this show any Account Sort Order ?
-Does it list the correct number of Accounts ? (you will only see code for them not names)
Wow, handy feature. Yes, three lines after account sort order it has a chain of about 15 numbers, and then after that is a list of my available and away messages. There is only one chain - and that makes sense, I only have one account. Appearently I can set my available message under ichat > My Status, but I can't set it to an away message.
-Repeat the Quick Look on the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
-Does this show one account at least ?
Yes, it shows one account (or at least I assume so - it's another much longer chain of letters and numbers).
-Make sure you Own the files still be doing a Get Info on them (Apple Key and I together)
I'm afraid I don't catch your meaning here. I have one of those new keyboards and there's no apple key - but there is a command key which I assume is the same. Anywho, I did the command-i thing and I can't find a place where it says if I 'Own'. It does mention that I can read and write on both though.
-I would also check the Users Folder and check you have not had more Mac User Accounts added.
The things in my users folder is my Account and the shared folder.
-I would also check System Preferences > Accounts and make sure you are still an Admin account -and no-one has set Parental controls on your account.
I appear to still be admin and I don't see any parental controls.
Hope that helps. I feel like I've tried everything. I always seem to have bad luck with electronics . I'll keep trying to see what I can find out.
    Thanks,
    Dark

  • How to get the iChat Buddy List to automatically appear on the Desktop

On my friends computer iChat is set to launch whenever he logs into his account, but the Buddy List does not appear on his Desktop. So when I see him online there is no green video camera mark next to his name.
If I want to do a screen share with him, I have to ask him to go to the iChat icon towards the right side of the Menubar (the round 'speech ballon') and click on Show AIM Buddy List at the bottom. Once he has the Buddy List on his Desktop, I can screen share with him.
Surely there must be a way for the Buddy List to always appear on the Desktop when logging into his computer... Can anyone help out?

    Hi,
    Interesting one.
If I were telling you how to create this it would be like this:-
    1) Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Your account and enter iChat in the Login items. (Makes iChat launch at Computer Start Up)
    2) to Hide the Window (Buddy List(s) ) at Start Up click the Red Button to close the Window/Buddy List before Quitting.
This will cause the next Start Up to not show th Buddy List.
How you make the Buddy List appear after that depends on how you bring it in to View.
    NOTES:
Some Windows in iChat from Buddy List to the Preferences to th Actual Chat Windows will appear in the places you left them for the most part.
    The Exceptions are Incoming Invites.
This means the Buddy List will be were you left it, your Outgoing Invite/Preview whilst waiting for Connection will always be where the last outgoing Video Chat window was.
Using the Red Button on a Open Chat Window will end the Chat (All types).
However doing it to a Buddy List only Hides it.
In addition to this using the Item (or the Keystrokes) from the Window Menu of iChat for a Buddy list when it is On view will Hide it (or Bring it back if Hidden)
The Show AIM option in the Menu Bar icon's drop down is a two edge thing as it shows All Buddies (Available ones) from all AIM Buddy lists if you have more than one (Apple names are also AIM Names in this case).
Does he want to change this Behaviour ?
He would be better off using the iChat Window menu (or Keystrokes) after he has clicked the icon in the Dock to bring the app to the Front so he can access the Menu bar with ichat in it.
He could also click and Hold the icon for iChat in the DOCK and select the Account Name there. This, if I remember correctly, will have the same effect as presenting the Buddy List from the Menu Bar icon (it will be hidden at Next Start Up)
