IChat AV Audio Chat is Closing Out.
Why when I am talking to a fellow Apple user does after 10 seconds of "no data being received" does it quit. I am usually still talking and it still says that. Any way that I could have iChat AV Audio Chat continue to stay open?
as my ichat buddy, awa and i are both on broadband, and it occurs randomly during the chat. some times it is at 1 hour, sometimes at 25 minutes, etc. but never in the beginning. as for the pc, audio chat is not compatible with windows. we are both on 10.4.3 and have the newest ichat update. we are doing this frequently, and it happens 2 or 3 times during our 1.5 hour chat. we are also both on brand new ibooks (1.42 GHz processor G4)
any help is appreciated, since this is so common and obviously not a one time glitch!

it was working fine while he was in the middle of nowhere in canada on wireless and i was in NYC on wireless and now he is using wireless in LA and I am still in NYC and we are getting that message, we both tried changing ports, what else should we try?

IChat video & audio chat with AIM user not working
Hi all,
I have a mobileme account. A friend has got a new Macbook with 10.5.5 and signed up for an AIM account. We've tried to do video chat (over the internet) with iChat 4 and cannot establish a session in either direction. It gets to the "Starting video chat..." part and then fails, telling us "did not recevie a response from ..."
Audio chat doesn't work for us either.
Video & audio chat works fine locally via Bonjour for us. It's just over the internet (through a NAT router if that matters) that multimedia chat does not function.
Any ideas?Yes, I have set the streaming speed to 500 on both mine and her end to no avail. I've also tried port 443, and we also tried using a jabber server (with google talk accounts). I didn't expect the jabber thing to work, as it's free and video/audio/screen sharing use non-trivial bandwidth.
I have not been able to do video, audio, or screen sharing with her at all. But I know these features work, as I have used them on my local wireless network via bonjour.
Only bonjour...
Do both of us have to be paying customers of MobileMe to get video chat over the internet? It seems like only one should suffice... -
Why does iChat video/audio chat don't work since 10.7.3
Yesterday I updated my Mac to Lion 10.7.3.
Now I can't have video/audio chat with my buddies anymore.

This is about iChat being cut off at th router due to some sort of Protection feature.
Most likley this is DoS (Denial of Service)
This is threshold based and will have changed from SNow Leopard as iChat can not use HD camera if the computer has one (meaning more pixels per frame and therfore more data being sent.)
The Protection then cuts the one port it thinks is getting too much data.
It may be before you did not reach the Threshold but now you do.
(could be that the Buddy has just got a faster Service).
In iChat > Preferences > Video Section on both computer set the Bandwidth to 500kbps.
This should keep it below the threshold.
Alternativley turn the feature off in the router's set up pages.
The Log (Open the Send to Apple Pop up and see the whole log) may well list that Pings are not being sent
This could be that the call gets cut off before this or that the router is Blocking Pings.
If you need to copy the log and post the first two sections here (that is in fact all of It except the bit below the Line "Binary Images for iChat")

Retrace time/duration of iChat video/audio chats
For subsequent time recording (basis for billing business hours), I would like to retrace which iChat audio, video and screen sharing sessions I did with whom at which day/time (length). Unfortunately, add-on's like "protocol viewer" (I think it's provided by the Chax plug-in) show the timestamp and content of text chats only. Is there any tool which parses iChat log files to provide a list of video/audio/screensharing sessions?
Any help is appreciated!

In the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) the Statistics screen/Tab/Option holds the Current Time up until the call is disconnected.
I am not aware of anything else that can sample that time.

Hi guys, my first post, and a recent Mac convert. I'm making a podcast radio show with a friend and we've already made big improvements from the pilot episode to our first hosted show (on collider.com). In order to get two microphones to work, I created an aggregate device which Garageband recognized quite readily, and even automatically put one of us on the left channel and the other on the right.
Now, though, we want to add interviews to to the show. This is where the problem comes in. I love that Garageband integrates automatically with iChat so that I can record iChat interview directly into a GB track. However, iChat doesn't recognize my aggregate device, so I can't get both of the hosts in on the interview. The workaround for this was to put my co-host on another computer in the house and have him connect to the iChat conference, but the audio quality isn't as good.
**Any way to get iChat to work with two (or more) USB mics?
If it matters, I'm running a G5 single-core tower system with a gig of RAM, using the Logitech 250 USB headsets as microphones and OSX 10.4
Thanks in advance for reading and contemplating my problem. Thanks even more if you have a solution! If you're an Apple software developer, maybe fix this on iChat?

G5 single-core tower Mac OS X (10.4.8)I was hoping not to have to spend more money. I already spent $100+ on the mics I use plus iLife '06. When I was looking into preamps they seemed pretty expensive. If you've got ideas for decent preamps and compatible mics, let me know which ones; I'd need to be able to use at least 4 microphones at once.

As Triton got to it's current version as a Beta and then without any apparent changes become the item on the AIM latest page link http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/latestwin.adp I would presume it is not a fully functional item yet.

As it is market driven hopefully it will catch up with AIM 5.9 on the connectivity front and lose or at least gain the ability to block unwanted ads.
I think we have a while to go with this one before suggesting people swap to Triton.

Why is there no support for iChat AV (AIM) to PC? Why doesn't it work?

Trillian will use the same ports.
Trilian basic will allow PCs to use the AIM servers and connect with iChat for Audio chats.
The AIM application will not connect to iChat for Audio only chats becuase that was the way it was written. It will support a Video to Audio connection where the Mac user has a camera and the PC has only a Microphone.

I am trying to make a connection and everytime I get the same error message about my bandwidth not being able to keep the connection. How do I go about changing my bandwidth or whatever this may involve so that I can use iChat AV audio chat???? HELP!!

The Mac Firewall is in System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab.
Whether it is On of Off is top left but under the tabs.
The settings that are active anre the ones in the center scrollable list with ticks in the boxes.
Scroll down the list and see if you have anything for iChat (Other than iChat Bonjour).
If this was an Upgrade from Panther rather than a fresh install then look at this page http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html at the first pic, that alternates between the Panther Firewall and the Tiger one.
Depending on your modem it will be accessed by typing an IP number into a web browser. See this page for many devices http://portforward.com/routers.htm

Throw netgear out the window? can't audio chat.
hi,
I have received the 'unsufficient bandwidth' and 'user not reponding' responses for months now. i just can't audio chat - haven't been able to for months!!! (but i can text chat)
I WAS able to audio chat when i first got my mac (it was brilliant!), then about a week later - gone - won't work. i haven't been able to get it to work since.
when i take my powerbook to my friends house, and connect wirelessly to her d-link modem, then yes - i can audio chat with her. no problems.
but when i come back to my place - it doesn't work. (i'm connected wirelessly to a Netgear DG834G v2 router/modem - a PC is connected directly via ethernet.)
I have spent COUNTLESS hours on help lines to mac, netgear, my service providers. i've even upgraded my broadband service. i am completely and utterly at my wits end.
today i spent more hours trying to fix it again. i updated my firmware. then i turned off the UPnP, and the netgear guy told me to go in to Firewall Rules and have my mac IP address directly accepted (port forwarding?)....still hasn't fixed the problem.
my firewall is off. the PCs firewall is off - as is the PCs norton antivirus.
what else can i do to get this thing working - other than throw the
netgear out the window and buy another brand?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post advice for my problem. Unfortunately in my Netgear SmartWizard options I do not have a Port Forwarding or Port Triggering option.
I have the following:
Setup - basic settings, adsl settings, wireless settings
Security - logs, block sites, firewall rules, services, schedule, email
Maintenance - router status, attached devices, backup settings, set password, diagnostics, router upgrade
Advanced - WAN setup, Dynamic DNS, LAN IP Setup, Remote Management, Static Routes, UPnP
Advanced - VPN - VPN wizard, VPN Policies, VPN status
I looked around for anything resembling what you mentioned and found in Services (under Security) i can add a Custom Service...
...i was able to add iChat 1 and iChat 2 and put the ports (but not my server address - it is set up in Firewall Rules). i chose TCP/UDP for both.
I also added AIM as TCP/UDP. [when i tried to add it as TCP it said "Service Port number was defined by another service" so i was forced to choose TCP.]
unfortunately this has not helped. This is probably way too much info for you, as your settings aren't like mine. but am hoping either you or someone may have an idea of what else i could do.

Can't even get audio chat to work: iChat 2.1 to AIM 5.9
Hi everyone! I have a problem that I am hoping someone can kindly help me out with.
I am an iChat 2.1 AV user without a webcam trying to connect to an AIM 5.9 user with a webcam. However, I am unable to establish an audio chat (much less try to get a one-way video chat working). On my iChat screen, I do not see a telephone icon next to the person's name. My friend says that audio is not one of my capabilities. I find this strange since I have a Powerbook G4 which all have a built-in mic. In addition, if I click 'connection doctor'' I see the bars move in response to my voice, so I know that the mic is working. Also, "microphone enabled" is checkmarked on iChat's audio drop-down menu.
I have opened ports 5060, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403 for UDP and 5190, 5297, 5298 for both UPD and TCP on my router, and my mac's internal firewall is off.
The PC user has opened ports 16384-16403 for UDP and 1024-5000 for both TCP and UDP as recommended on AIM's website.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am displayed as not being able to initiate an audio chat? I would like to get the video working one-way as well, but I figure that I should just be satisfied with getting the audio working for now and move on to the next challenge later.

This is supposed to be possible as a One-Way Video chat from the PC end.
However it is the most difficult to be successful with.
The ports 1024-5000 forthe PC are correct.
Your ports are going to be effective (port 5297 only need UDP).
The PC user should be able to tell you in a tecxt chat if their Video chat icon is Active.
IF it is they should try it.
If it is not they should look through the menu item in the Buddy list of AIM.
There is a menu way of initiating Video chat and this is somemtimes more effective.
Audio Only chats are not possible AIM to iChat. You have to go straight for One-Way Video.

How do i do an audio chat with Googletalk users on iChat?
I just got Tiger OS with the new iChat and I was expecting to be able to do an audio chat with my friends who have Googletalk on their PCs. Unfortunately, the audio chat option is greyed out next to all of their names on my buddy list and I can only type chat with them. How do I fix this?
FYI, I already looked at some of the other posts and at the googletalk website, and I am already using a jabber account with the server as talk.google.com, my gmail ID, and the port set at 5223 as directed. My computer does have a built in microphone. What am i missing?Hi

IChat won't send written messages...but will connect to do an audio chat...
I'm not sure what happened, but my iChat just stopped sending text-based messages. I can log on, click on a person, and type a message, but it won't send. I can, however, connect and do an audio chat. Has anyone had this happen before??

In iChat > Preferences > Accounts then the Server Settings tab, what is the Login port currently in use ?
For AIM Logins this is normally 5190 by default. We post about changing it to 443
Is SSL an Option for you and is it Selected ?
Try it deselected if you have it (iChat 5) - you need to be logged out to make changes.
iChat logs in on port 5190 on the TCP Protocol with any Buddy list that accesses the AIM Service.
It also uses this same port but on the UDP Protocol for File Sending, Direct IMs (Those with Pica and Files sent in them) and group chats. Some Buddy list Feedback is also on UDP.
Changing the Login port separates the dual use.
If the AIM SSL server goes down iChat needs a manual reset to get it to work again.
If changing either of those does not produce any changes then try Deleting the Account/Screen Name from iChat then Re-adding it again.
You will not lose your Buddy List as it is held at the server end.

After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I am using gmail, and I see my buddy (no camera icon next to her name), but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies. My buddy has the same problem as I. We are able to do video chat through gmail, but I had hoped to use iChat. I am using OS 10.6.8, iChat v. 5.0.3. What am I missing?

iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login. (where people can Google Chat as it were in a Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here This article has been changed several time in the recent months. It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

Welcome to the Discussions
Presumably the Pop up Log (Use the Reveal Triangle "Details" on th e left) said it was an Error 8 issue ?
It would help to know of the Buddy is on AIM for PCs, a different iChat version.
If you have the Mac Firewall ON (System Preferences > Security > Firewall) then you have to go to the Advanced Tab and set "Allow Signed Apps" and have iChat in the List. Stealth needs to be Off as well.
This will allow iChat through the firewall.
You also have to get it through your Router (Or routing modem).
This requires that you open or allow the ports that iChat uses.
If you want to use the iChat Screen Sharing then set your devices to use UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) which will allow the app to tell the router which ports to open.
Not all devices have UPnP and you may need to use either Port Forwarding or Port Triggering (depending how many computers you have to use iChat over the same connection).
You may also need to turn Off Ping Blocking and any Intrusion Protection (Denial of Service in particular)
The ports are:-

Note this is the iChat 4 and 5 Range
Add port 5060 UDP for iChat 2 and 3 and extend the group of 10 to 16384-16403 (20 ports)
iChat 4 and 5 also uses an undeclared Random port to do the Screen Sharing part and works if you can and do use UPnP (Or Port Mapping Protocol) to open ports in your routing device.
If you have Error 20, 21 or 22 showing in the first paragraph of the Log then you have a different problem.
Of course similar things ought to be done at the Buddies end.
