IChat AV Feature

To start a video chat you need to be logged into AIM via the iChat AV client. Did you know that, once you start a video conference, you can log-out out of iChat (not quit) and your video conference will stay active.
Nice feature that you can't achieve in Windows.

Hi Rj,
Yep. But as James says you can't Send files or Pics.
Edit:
And Yep to your latest.

  • Ichat "idle" feature

So, why would you want someone to not see "idle" status? Is this a security risk or something. Isn't it just about the same as "away" ?
I have only allow people in my buddy list to see me, so I am guessing if this is a security risk, that wouldn't matter in this case...right?

  • How to I disable the iChat popup feature?

It's annoying messages pops up, when I'm showing something on my desk, but i still want iChat on.

    Hi,
Welcome to the    Support Communities
It really depends what is popping up where and when it happens.
Incoming Invites to Text, Audio Only or Video Chats plus Screen Sharing Invites will always pop up in "Front" of anything else.(Although tapping the screen (Clicking the mouse on apart of an App) as it were will bring whatever you tap to the "Front" again and possibly hide that Invite)
If you have the Add-on called Chax you can select a window and then tell it to always be in Front.
This includes windows like the Chat windows or in fact the Invites as they are separate windows as far as iChat is concerned, that may not be on show all the time.
    Chax also installs Growl.
This can have Notification pop ups that can be turned Off in iChat > Preferences > Chax (It adds another Preferences Pane to iChat.
These can be set for Messages only or Buddy Actions like coming and Going Off line.
Growl also has a System Preferences  pane that can also be set by Application to be Off or On.
    Uploaded with Skitch!
Basically it can be the Action of Growl if you have it anyway.
It may have come with Chax and have setting in iChat as well.
There are not many more instances and they are rare as well so I will not go into them now.(Certain AppleScript actions set against an Action in the iChat Preferences > Alerts.  Some System Wide add-ons that can get info into iChat's Status Message or Icon change).

  • IChat video/audio NOT working

I just got my mac YESTERDAY and one of the big reasons was for the ichat/video features. I can't get this to work and I have no idea what to do. And this is my first mac- so i'm frustrated with it anyway. If anyone could help that would be great.

    Hi,
This is the iChat 2 forum.
It is part of the iChat Category that does not include iChat 4 (Which in the Leopard category).
However what have yo done so far ?

  • IChat AV - not fit for purpose

I love Apple stuff. I love the way stuff just works.
But iChat AV is the fly in the ointment. The sand in the vaseline, the worm in the Apple.
Take a look through this forum and see just how many people can't even make a connection. This is just unacceptable, If iMovie failed with an obscure message every time you connected a camcorder, it would get fixed. Garageband does not need a two page explanation of which keyboard settings work. iDVD does not spontaneously fail claiming that the user did not insert a DVD.
iChat needs re-engineering to make it more robust - or at the very least it should provide more help when it fails.
Networking is tough. Firewalls make it tougher.
Yep it is. But Skype works through almost any firewall. It makes only outward connections. iChat could adopt a different model of networking and avoid the problem which makes it so unreliable. I want iChat to work in a hotel room. I need it to work behind an office firewall. Telling the user to open ports on the router is NOT a solution.
"Hello, it that the hotel manager? Dude could you open some ports in your firewall? I need to say goodnight to my kids."
Telling the user to check preference settings in Quicktime should not be necessary either. It's an Apple product - it should not need technical support.
iChat does not explain what the problem is.
If iChat is going to require the user to indulge in router voodoo, it should have the courtesey to diagnose the problem.
    Instead we get:
"user did not respond" - hint - he did.
"insufficient bandwidth" - hint - there was plenty
    and so on.
We need: "port XXXX was not open for incoming UDP traffic."
We need a "diagnose connection" button.
I have a degree in computer science. If I can't get it to work, what hope is there for the rest of mankind.
Test addresses - what are they good for?
Apple should provide test addresses that mean something. I can connect to appleu3test01. I can watch the video! My buddy can connect to the same server. We both see video. Yay - We both have working iChat configurations. Until we connect together and blam - "user did not respond".
Poll - When is this going to get fixed?
    1) Never - iChat is only for home use with people with Airport routers. It works for them - everyone else can swivel. Sorry.
    2) Soon - Apple is licencing the Skype technology and creating a super sexy skype client with HD Video!
    3) Never - Apple knows that when Skype 2.0 finally appears with video on the Mac - everyone will migrate and iChat can be phased out.
    4) Real soon now. The next version of iChat will feature an "order new router" button.
If you think this post has merit, please respond and someone might notice.
    Glyn

    H Windyriver,
For a large number of people using iChat with PC buddies there are no issues.
The people posting here are the ones that come across problems.
    <hr>
Slightly on the more general theme.
Most people want something that works like a web browser.
Most people accept that not all web pages work properly without always knowing why.
The Browser companies claim all sorts abut their particular Browser and how compliant it is.
Ask any Web designer if they have to allow for different browsers doing different things ?
Look at HTML and CSS code that needs to be different for IE on a PC Or this one that needs javascript to do in some browser that others don't need.
It is a concept change that is needed.
iChat is more like an On-line game. It needs your equipment to be set up to allow it to work.
What most people ignore is that SO does AIM
AIM 5.5 and 5.9 instructions and
    http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html
Apple and AIM have a contract for allowing .mac names to work on the AIM service --
So why doesn't the new Triton work with iChat ?
AIM/AOL are the people re-doing their app. Whose problem does that make it ?
AIM for moving the goal posts ?
Or apple for not keeping up ?
Remember that iChat is a third party AIM client. Apple have already made it work with the AIM and Jabber services.
    It's not all bad news
I have a G4/1Ghz Dual at the bottom of the specs for multichat with only a 64VRAM card and 256RAM in it.
My interenet connection is 1Meg down and 256k up.
This upload speed is below the iChat min for multichats But I can.
The min speed for an internet connection for any 1-1 video chat is 100k but the connection will often highligh that you have dropped below this and the chat is still connected.
Ecamm.com are out there busy pushing the boundaries of iChat specs and other Add-ons.
Please keep posting constructive comments and posting them to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html
Remember it may be easier to say
" Can I have a routing log in the iChat error messages ?"
Rather than "iChat does not work it's your fault !!"
The people on these boards are other users willing to help ofr at least offer up ideas that will help the situation you find yourself.
We do not work for Apple.
We won't always say whether we agree or not with any satements about the product.

  • 'User did not respond' - Has something changed with ichat?

This seems to be an issue for nearly everyone. I have been using ichat video succesfully for over a year now. For some reason, in the last month or so, the video has stopped working on all three of my macs (powerbook G4 Tit, new mbpro, and imac g5 at home)
From my tibook (10.3.9)...I can sucessfully connect to the apple test video without problem. The person I am trying to videochat with can also connect to the same apple test video with no problem. However, we cannot chat with video OR audio with each other.
I have done a bandwidth test, and I am on a 1.5 T1. I am behind a company NAT (cisco 1700 router, Novell server handling the nat/pat) He is in LA and has succesfully be chatting with people on the east coast, so I don't think he is the issue.
Here is the log from the connection doctor:

As it has been for nearly everyone else on the list, I am extremely frustrated. I have never had an issue using ichat, but now I can't get it to work from anywhere. I have been able to get everyone in my family to switch to imacs so they can chat with my kids....and now we can't get it to work at all.
What am I missing? I find it hard to believe that this is so hard to use that so many people are not able to use it.
Any help or new suggestions would be most appreciated.
    sqe

I'm new to Macs and bought a MacBook Pro for myself and partner mostly for the iChat AV feature. Neadless to say, I'm frustrated beyond belief. I've spent over 25 hours trying to get it to work to no avail.
Each of us can connect with the Apple test buddies with no problem. We can't connect with each other though, except for two times that it actually worked.
I've troubleshooted everything I can think of. I've called my ISP (Verizon), Netgear (my wireless router), and just this morning I called Apple. I was at work so, I'll have to call them back when I get home but they don't seem to even know about the problem. Which is astonishing considering how many people are reporting this on the forum.
I can connect to anyone while on my office wi-fi but only to the Apple test buddies when at home. That's why I called my ISP and Netgear. I took the router out of the picture and still had the same problem at home.
It makes no sense that the Apple test buddies do work but not real people.

  • Messages in Mavericks:  How do we invoke "iChat Theater?"

Has the "iChat Theater" feature been removed from Messages?  I can't find it anywhere.  We used to be able to drag in files (video, pictures, documents) to view them "live" with our videoconferencing partner, like so:
And now it appears that all we can do is send the file?
Has this feature been removed?  Why?  If not, how do we invoke it, in Messages on Mavericks?  I use it all the time!

I suggest each user have their own Apple ID, iCloud account and purchase apps and music individually.
But if you must share the one account use the Settings app to stop syncing Contacts.
Settings > iCloud > Turn off Contacts.

  • What is the main purpose of ichat server what is it good for?

i've been looking at ichat server, but can't figure what advantages is has opposed to just using ichat on bonjour on my network? what is it good about it?

What are your goals here for chatting-style communications?
iChat server provides a way to leave messages for offline users, server federation, connection encryption, public key authentication, connections across networks, and various other features and options.
Here is the [iChat Server Administration 10.5|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/iChatService_Adminv10.5.pdf] manual; check the first couple of pages for some high-level details on the features. A quick Google search for iChat Server or jabberd or /"ichat server" features/ will most certainly turn up a [feature list|http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/features/ichat.html], too.

  • Ichat wont connect to friends computer

    Heya,
My girlfriend and i both have the new macbook pros with santa rosa and we are trying out the ichat video feature. We cannot connect using the audio or video chat but the textin works just fine. When Her/I send a video invitation, we can accept, but then we sit there and a window pops up saying that there was a problem trying to connect to the other user. In the chat it says i or her failed to respond.

  • HT2020 Where do I get iChat from

Can't seem to find where I can download iChat to my pad or phone.... Anybody help....

    Hi,
iChat comes on the Mac Install Disks (on those that have Install Disks)
With Lion and even Snow Leopard Upgrades through the App Store it is included with the other apps that come with the OS.
It does not work on iOS devices.
iOS devices have Messages for the iPhones, iPads and some Touches
There is also a Beta called Messages for the Mac OS (Computers) which can Sync the iMessages that iOS devices can send  (it links an Apple ID with the Phone Number on the Phone).
This feature is in addition to the iChat 6 features that iChat had.  (The Install process hides/Removes iChat)

  • Message has replaced my iChat after downloading an application for Message.

I was trying to hook my iMessage up to my computer and was told all i needed was a program called Message which should have already been on my computer but wasn't.
I downloaded the application and installed it and now its replaced my iChat and I can't get iChat back.
I've tried going through software updates to try to aleviate but my computer keeps saying 'none of the selected updates could be installed' after taking 15 minutes to download and install.
    Please help.

iChat has now been replaced by Messages. Messages automatically replaces iChat whenever you upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion, or from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, or when upgrading to Mavericks. iChat's features are found in Messages. There is no way to get iChat back.
I hope I answered your question.

  • Lightroom CC issues with multiple export at the same time

Back before Lightroom updated to the CC version, I was able to use export presets to send 4 different versions of the photos I'm working on at the same time (A Full Size for client at certain size, full size for myself, web-sized with watermark and a thumbnail). Since updating to the CC version, I'm only able to start the export process on two of these versions before the system simply becomes crippled and I cannot even navigate through Lightroom without it chugging along.
For reference, I'm running a 2014 rMBP with 16GB of RAM, LR is the only app open at the time and it's showing that I have roughly 6GB of RAM free when attempting this export.
TL;DR: LR5 worked wiht multiple exports at the same time, but LRCC now chugs after 2 exports are started

Re: "Selecting video in Messages, now starts Face time for video. Face time is one to one only."
Apple "Messages" supports two different types of video conferencing. It's become more than a little confusing. If you (or the person on the other end) ONLY have accounts set up for Apple's "iMessage" service (associated with your Apple ID and "iCloud") you may see the video symbol, but when you click on it you will be connected via FaceTime which is limited a 1-to-1 video conference.
However, if you have set up an AIM account in Messages (you may already have an AIM account ID if you once used iChat for video, audio and screensharing) and the person at the other end also has an AIM account you will be connected via AIM and will be able to do screen sharing and multi-person video conferences just like the old iChat, i.e. you'll have iChat Theater features, up to 4-way conferencing, etc.
It can get very confusing if, for example, you've signed up for AIM using a .me or .cloud email address. But once you have it set up and learn to recognise the way Messages switches between AIM and iMessage all the old iChat features work just fine in Messages.

  • Help Possible Virus or Unexplainable System Behavior

Okay I have an Apple PowerBook G4 which I got in winter 2003 with Mac OS X Jaguar 10.2.8 originally which I had shortly afterward updated to Panther and 10.3.9 has been working just fine till last couple of weeks when I have begun to notice the following problems:
    1) system was freezing up -- Finder would either crash or freeze and would require force quitting Mac wouldn't respond so I ran Disk Utility and repaired Disk Permissions couldn't find anything wrong so I ran Disk Utility of the OS X CD to repair disk and it found some errors in the disk I tried fixing them unfortunately Disk Utility couldn't do so and is only app I have for disk repair at present.
So I end up backing all my files and reinstalling OS X Panther from scratch and all my applications. Microsoft Office X, Virex 7.2 anti-spyware software with definitions, Mac OS 10.3.9 Cobmined Update, the Apple Security Updates and Microsoft patches for their Mac products to fix vulnerabilities in Mac Office etc and any and all other apps I had.
Problem is even afterward the most bizzare things have been happening. Sometimes when I open my iTunes Music Library -- have some music and videos in there -- videos of course in .m4v iPod format -- the problem is 3 out of 5 times each time I quit and re-open iTunes it says that my iTunes Library file is damaged. How did it get damaged. I trash the damaged file and re-import my music. Is it okay to do this automatically? I mean I still have my files on the hard drive (since OS reinstall I copied everything back) and when I trash damaged file iTunes automatically scans the contents of my hard drive, finds and automatically imports pre-existing tracks into the Library -- I shouldn't have to delete the music files along with the damaged Library file and then re-copy the music when the working Library file is available.
Anyways iTunes occasionally reports the Library is damaged and I have done nothing to cause its damage. Sometimes in Safari -- another problem is also occuring.
You see I have popup blocking enabled in Safari and tabbed browsing on all the time. However, lately sometimes when I quit and re-launch Safari those features are disabled but they used to be on by default -- so I shouldn't have to manually turn them on each time I launch the browser.
Another problem -- maybe its the Apple Secuurity Update 2006-003's fault but since installing it in this period after last clean OS X reinstall (last time was a clean reinstall because of disk error) has caused some problems. Before applying it I was able to login to the AIM network -- i.e. AOL Instant Messaging Service easily and quickly via iChat but now iChat's feature to login to AIM is unavailable its not like its giving me the option to login but rejecting my login attempt -- not like I give it my username and password and it has a problem. iChat won't even let me attempt to login now.
As I recall when I first tried installing Apple Security Update 2006-001 it caused Safari to break I had to reinstall OS X to get it back and not apply the update. The iTunes 6.0.2 update which I heard also caused some problems for Windows users prevented me from running Disk Utility on my Mac for some time. It appears as if these Apple Security Updates occasionally are more trouble than their worth. Apple should take the time to test them in advance before rushing them to market or in this case the Internet for download by their customers/users that way they can make sure they are working updates and they don't cause any problems.
But yeah getting back to the point of this thread I seriously don't know what to do about this issue. I want it resolved permanently. Next time I quit iTunes and re-launch it I should not be told the iTunes Music Library file is damaged. Nor should my bookmarks in Safari be deleted automatically. When these things happen by themself it is usually somewhat of a cause for concern.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A VIRUS COULD HAVE GOTTEN ON MY MAC: I never open suspicious files -- I only accept attachments from people I know and I do attempt to update my Mac with newer security updates regularly so long as they don't give me grief -- I use Mac OS X's Internet Firewall software accessible via System Preferences in the Sharing Pane and the router in my home also has a firewall in it (that is a physical hardware based firewall) I have iTunes 6.0.5 now and the latest update of QuickTime 7 which enhances security and stability of the product. I even run anti-virus software and have never found viruses on my Mac -- also with the Mac's layer of security -- most programs require authentication on the user's part like a username and password to install software so spyware cannot slip in undetected -- software can only be installed manually not automatically so nothing could have been installed on my Mac without my knowledge.
THAT IS WHY I don't understand what could be causing the problem. What should I do? If any further information is needed please let me know I will be happy to provide it if a solution can be reached to my problem.

Okay for Safari I found the logs of the most recent crash report I could find and am looking at it to see if it offers any solutions for my problem with Safari -- is kind of long but anyways posting it here to see if anyone has any ideas -- I for one don't know what all of this means but hoping someone else might know a little more than me on how to interpret the following:

Application Enhancer is a software plugin by Unsanity.com used in Fruit Menu and other software products by the ciompany for customizing Mac OS X -- which I have often used from time to time. I HAVE RAN DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS and TO REPAIR DISK a few times and it hasn't found any problems recently but still these problems have persisted. I thought it was a issue with the hardware -- there were some errors sometime ago but they were corrected and even after that these problems have lasted a while longer -- no more problems though are being found in hardware by Disk Utility.
I'll try running Apple Hardware Test again soon to see if that helps any.

  • Is there any way to receive Google Talk messages in the iPhone Messages (meaning the text messaging app)?

I want to know if there's any way to receive incoming Google Talk messages in the iPhone Messages app? What I mean by this is the app your receive text messages in. The reason I ask is because in the new "Messages" app for the Mac, you can include your Google Talk account.

If I recall correctly, it's possible to send a Google Talk message out as an SMS (though there are apparently limits on how many in a given time period in order to prevent spam). That would be the only way as far as I know. Messages on the Mac seems to have folded some of iChat's features into it, so it works a bit differently.
    Best of luck.

  • External isight not recognised by 8core

I want to use ichat again because Final cut pro has the new ichat theatre feature which is very handy for me to communicate with my clients.
I did not use it for a while. Tried to set it up again but now my 8 core os 10.5.8 does not "see" the external isight.
I tried all firewire ports on the front and back of the machine. Disconnected all other connections ( motu audio interface , matrox mxo mini 2 ) Tried another firewire cable.
Resetted p and vram. Restarted my 8 core several times in different situation with the cam connected/disconnected.
I don t see the green light on the cam when I connect it to my 8core. System profiler doe not see it either.
    The isight itself is ok.
When I connect it to my macbook pro the light turns green. The cam is seen by my laptop.....
    I am lost ....
Anything else that I can try to make it work again?
    kind regards
    jane

Thanks ... Is this firewire card a pci card? If so then I have a problem...
    You're welcome, Jane.
Yes, the FW Card I mentioned (the ones users can add) would be a PCI card for your MacPro.
To resolve the resulting problem, after verifying that:
      • your iSight actually works with some other Mac using the same Firewire cable, and
      • you have tried connecting iSight directly to each of your MacPro's FW ports, and
      • you have ruled out possible software and hardware FW conflicts in MacPro, and
      • your MacPro's system profiler does NOT show iSight as a FW device, and
      • you have reset your MacPro's Firewire, then
the solution to your problem is to have your AASP service your MacPro to correct the problem with your Mac's internal firewire circuitry or connections. Because you have no room to add other cards, it seems that your next best choice is for the technician to repair the FW that is already in your Mac.
Although I am not confident that they will resolve your problem without professional help, if you have not already tried them, and if you believe there is any possibility that your trouble is related to your OS software, here are two alternatives you could try before taking your 8-core to an AASP:
    (1) First, backup critical info. Then use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Next, download and apply the 10.5.8 COMBO update:
      http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Repair permissions IMMEDIATELY again after the restart that finishes the installation.
Then test iSight again. Repeat the Troubleshooting suggestions if necessary.
Although I am not hopeful based on your particulars, properly applying the latest Combo Update has helped some users correct a variety of strange problems. It costs nothing but some time to try the Combo Update before relinquishing your 8-core while it is being repaired, so this may be something you want to consider.
    (2) If the Combo Update does not help you, you can also try reinstalling Mac OS. After reinstalling 10.5.x, you can use the Combo process above to update to the current Leopard version in one update.
Of course, neither of these options will help a hardware problem. Given your lack of slots to add a Firewire card, an Apple Technician is my best suggestion if nothing else works for you.
