IChat AV Problems in Leopard are Unacceptable

All I am asking for is help getting the audio and video functions in iChat working.
This is totally ridiculous to spend thousands of dollars on a machine that works perfectly in most every aspect, but we can't seem to get an answer on something as simple as getting the video feature working in iChat.
I am using a new aluminum intel iMac, I am on high speed cable internet, I have a Linksys 54G (at least I think that is the model) router and I am using OSX 10.5...what in the world do I need to do to get this working?
I have already applied the previous suggestions such as turning off my Internet Sharing, my firewall, and the other iChat prefs, but it has been to no avail. This has become a headache of major proportion. Solutions please??

Linksys.

• IChat 6 problems

So these are two iChat questions I have.
Ever since I have upgraded to Lion, when talking on iChat (via AIM) I don't receive certain messages. Example I'll be talking to someone, and all of a sudden, the bubble indicating they are typing pops up, and it just stays there, but when I look on the iPad (i stay signed on there) the message pops up, but again on iChat, it just shows the "now typing" bubble. The iPad and iChat both being on never caused an issue, so I know it's not that, but has anyone experienced this issue, and has there been a fix found for this? And 10.7.1 did not fix this either... maybe .2?
And the second, in Snow Leopard I was able to change iChat's idle settings by using this command in the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.ichatagent UserIdleTimeout x
I've tried using this in Lion, but it doesn't seem to change, and I am no longer able to go idle. I think this is related to my first problem in that I am going idle but my status bubble does not turn form green to yellow, and that's why I'm not receiving messages, but that could just be me over thinking. But does anyone know if it's still possible to change, and know a new command? Thank you for reading this long question, appreciate any help.

Hi,
I would bring the Finder to the Front and use the GO Menu > Go to Folder and enter
~/Library/Preferences
Find the com.apple.ichatAgent.plist
Use Quick Look to view it.
Near the bottom it should read like this:-
(The top part of this will be your Buddy Pic as code)
Try changing the value for "x" and see if the 360 figure I show changes in yours.
This way you will know if you are writing to that .plist
If you are then we have to presume that the Idle timer has been moved somewhere else.
If it has been moved then you should still be going Idle but not until the default 10 mins has past.
IF you do not appear to be able to Write to that .plist you have to Check its Ownership and Permissions
Highlight com.apple.ichatAgent.plist
Use CMD + i Keys together (Finder's Get Info from File Menu)
IN the last tab of the Info Panel are the Ownership and Permissions
It should list your shortname  followed by (Me)
On Opening the Padlock you can heck further as this pic shows
If you own it then the option in the cogwheel icon will be greyed out like in the pic

• Anyone else having a Problem with Leopard and Photoshop CS3?

I'm using CS3 with Leopard 10.5.4 at work and there are some very aggravating anomalies, that I'd like to nail down to a cause. Most frequently, when switching from apps to P'Shop, the menu bar stays for the previous app, i.e. when going from Finder to P'shop, the menu bar still says Finder and has Finder options. Changing from Lightwave to P'Shop, the menu bar remains Lightwave.
Occasionally, an Adobe app - P'Shop or InDesign - will simply disappear and not come back. The icon in the dock shows it as active, but no amount of clicking, Command-Tabbing will reveal the app and I have to Force Quit, losing unsaved changes.
I have a feeling it's Leopard, since, I've used CS3 on Tiger and CS4 on Tiger and never had a problem.
I'm wondering if upgrading to the latest Leopard would make much of a difference.
Has anyone come across this and found any kind of answers?
Thanks for any suggestions.

> Just because it doesn't happen to Phil (who may not use all of the same features of the Suite that others do anyway) does NOT mean that these problems are not real and are not mere PEBCAK.
Right. If someone is having a problem associated with Tiger, it's PEBAK. If Leopard is involved, it's automatically because of Leopard. Apparently, with Apple's latest OS, trouble shooting problems are no longer necessary - just blame it on Leopard and call it a day.
b FUD
I find the dynamics here really interesting. This thread would have been very different if Vincent had posted with problems involving Tiger. Would have gone something like this:
After admonishing him for not providing more information about his setup by posting the obnoxious big blue link on how to ask questions (ahem - we know NOTHING about his machine or configuration, such as which machine, how much RAM, scratch disk or attached peripherals), there'd be all kinds of trouble shooting advice given - "try a new user", "repair permissions", "run DiskWarrior, and on and on ...
But no, since he mentions Leopard, none of that is apparently necessary and the completely, utterly
b irresponsible
advice is given ... "that's just the way Leopard is".
Those are some serious problems he's reporting that have nothing to do with Leopard. Something is obviously hosed!
As for discounting my experience because I don't use every app in the suite as extensively as I do Photoshop, I'm FAR more qualified to discuss Leopard and CS issues than Ann or Neil who do not use Leopard at all (and have never used it as far as I know.)
"Others have problems with it", is their battle cry but it's extremely weak. Do I really need to remind you all that these forum are ALWAYS filled with people who have problems, regardless of version or OS? You act as if this forum was a ghost town when Tiger and CS3 were current!
Gee, Ann ... people are STILL reporting problems with 10.5 and CS3? How shocking! Guess what - people are STILL reporting problems with 10.4 and CS3 too! Let me make a prediction - people will have problems with 10.8 and CS9!
Vincent-
> I don't really deal with fonts anyway ...
Yes. You do. Even if you never type a single line of text, every application uses fonts to create menus and other GUI items. If one of those fonts are bad, it can create all kinds of problems, including the very problems you mention.
The fact that you don't seem aware of this and you're still using 10.5.4 leads me to believe you're not familiar with the basic practices of maintaining a healthy system. Again, how did you install Leopard on that machine?
Look, if you're simply trying to justify using CS4, go right ahead. It's a worthwhile upgrade in it's own right. However, if you install it on that machine in it's current state, CS4 will NOT fix your problems because you do NOT have a healthy system.
You asked for experiences with Leopard - I can launch every application in both CS3 and CS4 suites
i simultaneously,
and STILL not have your issues. I haven't experienced anything like your CS3 problems in Leopard - on both a 2006 Mac Pro and a 2008 Macbook.
If you'd like help to try and figure out the real problem, I'm more than happy to help. If not, Adobe will gladly take your money ...

• Images exported using Leopard are soft compared to Tiger.

I've been working on exporting images for client preview and noticed that the images I'm exporting under Leopard seem a bit soft. I checked my export settings and everything looks the same as it did under Tiger.
For comparisons sake, I exported several images that had previously been exported under Tiger and there is a definite difference. Side-by-side, the images exported using Leopard are much softer than the images exported using Tiger. The edits on these images were all previously done using Tiger.
Has anyone else noticed this?
I'm using 1.5.6 on 10.5.1.
Thank you!
Cheers,

Everything looks fine for me from Aperture and LR. I did a clean install of Leopard and all my apps on a Macbook Pro. Are you looking at images in photoshop to compare them? Preview is not a reliable way to check for sharpness right now, since some rocket scientist decide it would be cool if you couldn't scale in set increments anymore, and the randomly scaled rendition can be very soft. As a follow-on to that thought, are the images on your web site displaying at the size you exported them at? If they're being scaled on the web page, and safari is using the same rendering engine as Preview, it's possible that it's making the images look soft.
hope i said something useful.
Hi Janet,
Hmmm, perhaps the fresh install is the way to go? I'm using Photo Mechanic view the exported images, not Preview or Safari. I only mentioned Preview in an earlier thread because in other discussions I've found, Preview appears to exhibit some of the same softness that myself and a few others are experiencing with our Aperture exports.
Here's a screen grab of two images rendered side-by-side in PhotoMechanic. The top image was exported using Tiger while the bottom image was exported using Leopard. The actual edits on the image (white balance, sharpness, etc) were done previously in Tiger. The only thing I did to the image in Leopard was export it.
http://www.barbatto.com/misc/comparison.jpg
In this example, it's pretty obvious that the image exported with Leopard is much softer. Also note that the file size is slightly smaller for the Leopard exported image.
As for the images on my website, most of them were exported with Aperture under Tiger. Since I've upgraded to Leopard and have been experiencing soft images, I've been using Canon's Digital Photo Professional to export any newer shots I've placed on my site.
Regarding Lightroom, I installed the trial and its exports were flawless. They don't exhibit any of the softness I am experiencing with Aperture.
So, right now, I'm at a loss. I experience this softness on both my MacPro and MacBook Pro. It should be noted that both machines were upgraded. Perhaps I should take some time and do a clean install on one of the machines and see if my results are any different. Or keep my fingers crossed that 10.5.2 will solve my problems
Thanks for your comments!

• Ichat 5.0 snow leopard transcript viewer? log viewer? where?

quick question? how do i view my saved message history in ichat? maybe my eyes are tired but i can't seem to find anything in the menus or help. i know i could do it previously, i believe, via a button in the preferences that no longer seems to be there in snow leopard.

Hi,
It is Recent Items in the File Menu.
In iChat 5 this shows you the last few Chats and which ones were saved.
Clicking on a Saved one will open it.
By going to System Preferences > Appearances you can set the Number of Items that show in the Recent List (essentially it is set for the Finder but applies to several other Apple Apps)
In iChat > Preferences > Messages is a Option to Open the Saved Transcripts Folder (Default is called iChats and is in your Home Folder/Documents)

Hi, I just got a brand new macbook and my iChat has stopped working.
I used it for 2 days and now it says that my username/password is incorrect, even though I know it is the right one.
I'm using a google talk or gmail account.
I have tried everything, is there anything I can do to fix this?

Hi,
So this is Lion rather than the OS 10.6 shown in your Specs ?
Have you checked  System Preferences > Security > Firewall > Advanced Button (If ON)
Is Allow Signed Apps Enabled ?
Is iChat in the List ? (Of allowed Apps)
In System Preferences > Network > (Connection Method) > Advanced Button > DNS tab do any DNS servers Appear ?
How is or was iChat allowed through your router ?
Were/Are you using Port Forwarding ?
If so, does the Computer have the same IP showing in the System Preferences > Network as has been set up for the Port Forwarding ?
Have you tried deleting the Account in iChat then Re-adding It ?

• Fewer problems with Leopard if bought on new iMac rather than upgrade?

I bought a new iMac (my 1st Mac ever) just before Leopard came out, so I have Tiger 10.4.11 now and love it. I've had no problems whatsoever and really don't plan on upgrading to Leopard because of all the problems I keep reading about. My brother is thinking about buying an iMac but hesitates because he's heard so many problems about Leopard. Question for you guys - do the Leopard problems seem more common if you've done an upgrade from Tiger, or are the problems just as common if you buy a new iMac with Leopard installed? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your choice - BUT remember that Millions of people have upgraded with NO problems - you only read about the very few who do have problems. Leopard is a great OS and IF you upgrade carefully (repair your disk, fix permissions, backup and have a bootable clone in case of problems) you are very unlikely to have problems and it is EASY to go back to your clone in the unlikely case that you do have any problem.

This is a "how long ago did yo stop beating your wife question" - Problems are VERY uncommon in either case. With new systems they are highly unlikely since there is no previous damage to the system and NO incompatible third party software on the system - but problems are extremely uncommon in either case
He should move ahead with his purchase IMHO.

• Problems reinstalling Leopard on Macbook

Just recently, I've had some serious problems installing Leopard back onto my Macbook. About 4 days ago, I decided to use boot camp to try Windows XP on my Macbook. It all went smooth as I was trying out Windows XP, but I soon found out that I had some serious problems. Boot camp had written over my version of Leopard. When I held down the option key, all I saw was Windows. Of course I thought this could be easily remedied by using my Install disks 1 and 2 but for some reason, neither disks were recognized when I put them in. At one point disk 1 was recognized but it took about twenty minutes to actually get to the install screen. Once there I tried to erase or wipe the Harddrive as it says to do in the apple instructions. So I went ahead and erased it. This was probably a bad choice seeing as halfway through the first install disk, the installation failed. I had just erased my harddrive and now I cannot even get into Windows! Now I cannot get my Macbook to recognize either disk and both disks are spit out after about 5 times of the disk starting itself back up and trying to recognize it multiple times. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You've either got a bad disc or a bad drive. Both happen on occasion.
Do you have access to another Mac? If so, try the disc in it (of course, don't actually do anything, just see if it's readable).
If the disc is bad, and you're near an Apple store, you might be able to get a Genius to install from a disc of theirs, but either way, you need to get a replacement. Depending on how old your Mac is, there may or may not be a small charge.
If the drive is bad, it's covered for a year. If you've got AppleCare, it's even longer.

• Ichat audio problem

does anyone know how to re-install ichat...Im having problems with buzzing noises, mutes sometimes, volume issues etc...

Sounds as Alerts are set in iChat > Preferences > Alerts.
They are played by the computer at the same volume as System Alerts set in in System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects tab.
So this is the first place to Check.
If you set the Speech option in iChat 3 and have Upgraded to iChat 4 then there can be conflicts with certain options particularly if in iChat 3 you set your own Phrase which is not an option in iChat 4
Another cause of this issue is if you have set an Individual Buddy with a Sound that is different from the Global settings.
This is set by highlighting a Buddy and then doing a Get Info (Using Apple key and i together) and setting an Alert there.

Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the same shared folder can be accessed by name, but can’t be accessed be IP address and asks for credentials.
Please try to enable the option below on the device which has shared folder:
Besides, check the Advanced Shring settings of shared folder and confrim that if there is any limitation settings.

• What is causing this problem and what are you doing to fix it? Should I just go back to Internet Explorer?

Every single day, Firefox crashes and sometimes in the most inopertune time. This is very frustrating as some of the times I can not go back in and correct what I was not able to do due to your site crashing. What is causing this problem and what are you doing to fix it? Should I just go back to Internet Explorer?

First, you must use a specific profile for Firefox 4.0 Beta and keep your current one for Firefox 3.6 to prevent interferences between the two versions.
For your problem:
# Troubleshooting extensions and themes could be a cause.
# If not 1. and if it does not happen in Safe Mode, you must disable HW acceleration in Options > Advanced > General. If it solves your issue, your graphic driver is out-of-date and must be updated. Go to your computer manufacturer support site.

• Problem with leopard DVD loading in PowerPC G4

Hi having problems installing Leopard DVD on Mac G4 desk top - 1GHz PowerPC G4 (3,6), 1MB L3 Cache, 768 MB Ram.
A few of the details:
1) I have installed Leopard on my Laptop and it is running fine and it is a family pack edition DVD.
2) I wiped the G4 I am trying to install clean and re-loaded the original system software, then loaded to Tiger to see if that was the issue...When I put in the Leopard DVD it doesn't even show as being in the computer. It doesn't come up on the desk top...it doesn't show in the HD...it doesn't make a sound at all when put in the DVD slot...basically, the computer is not recognizing the DVD. I have tried other cd's and DVD's in the drive....everything is working except the Leopard DVD.
