IChat AV problems with Comcast as ISP

I've been a user of iChat AV for several years, and in the past 6-8 months it's stopped working as well as it used to. I routinely used it to connect from California to Florida and Indiana, and now I get about one minute or less of decent audio and video in a session before one or both ends starte breaking up and freezing. I've complained to Comcast about this, and have even sent them netstat info showing what seems to be peering problems between them and AT&T (large steps up in hop times across that boundary, in both directions). All they've done about it is send techs to change all the cables in my house, which is nice but does not fix the problem. I seem to have good bandwidth - 6 to 10 Mbit/sec - and other internet functions are fine, but video chatting is miserable (audio-only chatting still works ok). Can anyone advise me how to handle this? It makes iChat AV unusable for video.

I am having this EXACT same problem! I am able to iChat with my mother who still has DSL. But I can no longer successfully iChat with my brother and we both have Comcast broadband Internet with VoIP phone service. I either get several error messages such as "not enough Bandwidth" or it works for a minute and breaks up and pixelates.
I have searched the Internet high and low for an answer. RalphUK has posted amazing and helpful amounts of information about how to resolve issues with iChat. I have followed ALL of them, including opening certain ports, testing my bandwidth several times a day (it's fine), changing Quicktime and iChat bandwith preferences to several things, trying to re-cycle my Airport and Comcast modem, calling Comcast to complain ( the customer service is absolutely clueless!). At this point, I don't know what to do except switch back to DSL and ditch my broadband Comcast Internet. I also think the residential VoIP with Comcast maybe part of the issue. I have also read that Tiger 10.4.10 has bugs in it that cause this issue.
It is really aggravated that after years of being able to use iChat, now I cannot. Any help or info about Comcast's role in this would be helpful.

  • Problems with Comcast

Has anyone encountered problems with Comcast when sharing Internet on OS X 10.8? The Comcast's technicians stated that they are having problems with OS X Mountain Lion, and they are charging me $80 to send a technician to resolve the problem. Mac X 10.7 from my MacBook worked well for this function, using Comcast's Internet connection.
Given Comcast's massive coverage area, this is a huge issue that needs the attention of Apple senior management.

    Guys,
Bob is not the only one. We have the exact same problem here. MAJOR slowdown in speed with Comcast and we're not over ethernet we're over wireless.
Comcast came out and dug their heels in trying to find the problem 3 times. I then asked them to bring a windows laptop (of course on the day I brought mine from work too) and they hooked it up with their own router, and we put a mac and the laptop on the router. Mac's test speed was 1.8-2.3Mb/s windows laptop was 7-9Mb/s. This is just CRAZY.
So I went upstairs fired up my Intel iMac and the work Laptop and did the same test over wireless. SAME results.
This is NOT a network issue with comcast (for once), and this is not a router issue or a modem reset issue.
There is something on our macs that is causing this. We have 4 Macs in this house and they ALL exhibit the same problems.
I even went as far as changing the connection on the Airport Extreme's wan connection to 10-baseT Half Duplex and we get the same results.
We're at a loss and this sure ***** big time.
I even installed the optimizer packages available around the web, same results. I ran rman, nothing new to report.
    10.4.6 blows.

  • Why does apple ipad and iphone have problems with comcast?

We attempt to send pictures through our comcast wifi account and gets to about 90%and freezes. Have reset modem, and router, have turned off phone and reset it. Have switched to 4G then pictures will send. Only has problem when connected to wifi. As my ipad is wifi, I cannot send pictures at all with it.
Did not have this problem until iOS 6 update.
    Any suggestions?

My iPad and other devices have no problems with Comcast, but I didn't get my WiFi router from them. If you did, your router may need a firmware update, or you may need to get a different model of router.
    Regards.

  • MLB.TV / streaming stuttering and slow to load - no problems with Comcast Xfinity

3 years ago, I had 15/5 FIOS and had trouble with slow load times for streaming services including Netflix (we now all know about those problems) and MLB.TV (heavy user).  I switched to Comcast (to try and fix the issues as well as lower price) and had a very good experience.  Very fast load times, no stuttering, good up times.
As Comcast prices have risen in my area, I decided to try both side-by-side to compare.  I had 50/25 FIOS installed but kept by 25/5 Comcast Xfinity running as well.  Other than the modem, I'm using the same 1 Gbps Ethernet switch all over my house and ALL of my devices (Roku, streaming DVD, etc) are directly connected via Ethernet.  No wireless connections and all of my devices have been power cycled for a clean boot with the new system.  The only difference is the modem and the source of the broadband pipe.
The good news is that I'm getting 60/30 service with good ping based on several download sites including the FIOS test site.  The bad news is that the MLB.TV and other streaming services on FIOS are all stuttering like crazy ... sometimes the stream pauses all together.  Obviously this is unacceptable for watching sports or movies.
The FIOS stream takes a relatively long time to load (5-10 seconds) compared with Comcast "instant" start and will often stop, buffer for a few seconds, jump back, and then go forward for 30 seconds ... running out of buffer and starting again.  Other times it will play but at a reduced bitrate (pixelated resolution).  None of these problems exist when I use the (still active) Comcast connection and modem.  I had these problems with FIOS 3 years ago, and now they have immediately remanifest when switching back.  I'm frustrated.
If this continues, I'll need to cancel Verizon FIOS and continue with Comcast ... the price difference isn't worth it.
    Any thoughts from support?  thanks.

That would not explain why switching the coax/modem back to Comcast resolves the problems, both in buffering speed and stuttering.
This is not on a PC, this is on a network device like a Roku or Blu-Ray player.
If it were on the MLB server end I would be having trouble on my PC at other sites (I can generally stream over WiFi elsewhere) and the issue would not resolve itself by switching providers.
Also, I had this problem with FIOS 3 years ago ... so it is not something recent.
    Thanks though, any other ideas?

  • Problems with comcast email on iphone

Had problems sending emails from my iphone and ipad through Comcast. Apple could not solve the problem, contacted Comcast and they stated that they had issues with the Apple iphone and ipad and told me to download the "Xfinity connect ap" did so and everything works better than before.  When I used the Apple email had to trash what I did not want on Apple and then when I went to Comcast the email were still there.  Using the xfinity ap, when I delete on the iphone or the ipad the emails are deleted at all places.  Before I had to delete on my iphone and then my ipad and then when i went to my computer they were still there and I had to delete there also, which was a real pain. Still can send and rec email from my icloud account, but comcast email are handled through xfinity connect

my point is what i stated. maybe i posted in the wrong forum. SORRY.  I was only trying to help. No it is probably not Apples problem but the Apple people did not know what to do or did not have a solution to the problem.  I spent hours trying to straighten it out on line and with apple personel with no results, Apple employees did not have a solution to the problem.  Like I said Sorry, but it cost me hours trying to straighten it out.  I had used it for 2 yrs and then it stopped working, I figured Apple had a solution but they did not, and wasted a lot of my time.

  • Problem with Comcast cable modem..

Ok, I am trying to set up a connection using my Linksys WRT54GS V6.0, I have followed all the steps given in the Easylink setup software, but when I try to go on the internet, it never connects. Can someone please tell me how to successfully install a WRT54GS router to a comcast cable modem? Thank you very much.

Actually, I like to use the direct approach when setting up my routers. I suggest you login using a browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer. Type in the router's IP address, in the address bar, in the form as http://192.168.1.1 . Every router has some form of IP address. Yours might be different. Check the manual. Once you type that in, then you can login to the router with the standard password preset with the router from the factory.
Once inside the firmware of the router, then you can make sure everything is communicating with Comcast. By logging in this way to the router, you know that the LAN (local Area Network) communications is functioning properly between the router and the computer. If you can not login to the router itself from the computer using the router's IP address, then you might have a cable problem between the computer and the router.
Make sure your Comcast modem works directly to a computer first. If that works, then attach the router to the output of the Comcast cable modem.
There are possibly issues with the MAC address and/or IP address being assigned to the cable modem when the new router is installed. You might have to clone the MAC address. See the following article about: Forcing Comcast to New IP Address

  • Problem with Comcast & Airport

I am using a new Apple dual band N router with my Comcast cable modem. Connection is intermittent. Sometimes it works fine, but sometimes the router just refuses to connect to the internet. My Network and Sharing Center (Vista Business) shows limited connectivity - local but no internet. I check the Airport Utility and it says that there are no problems. I have tested my computer with a hard wired connection and with other wireless networks - no problems. Anyone know why my cable modem and router dont seem to get along very well?

After restarting the router many, many times, the network is back up. I dont understand what the problem was, but I wont be shutting it down again if I can help it. Maybe Windows 7 will make it work consistently. Its definitely a router issue - a hard wire connection works no problem, and I connect to other people's wireless networks in 2 seconds.

  • Problems with Comcast (Motorola) modem and Airport Extreme

I have a very strange problem which I have been unable to solve, nor able to find a solution on Apple Support or anywhere else by Googling it.
I switched back to Comcast/Xfinity, hooked up the Motorola surfboard SB5120 modem:
My primary Macbook Pro connects to the Internet, but (and this is bizarre!) the AirPort Extreme is flashing yellow with the errors listed as a) no Internet conncetion, and b) no DNS server
All other Wi-Fi devices are *unable* to connect to the Internet; they are connecting to the home network, but nothing else.
I did a "hard" reset of the AE, and setup the home network from scratch, same problems:  one Macbook connects, nothing else does.
I have power cycled everything multiple times (even unplugging EVERY cable for 30 minutes, then reconnecting), spent the better part of 6 hours trying tor resolve this.
    Any other settings to change?
    In AirPort Utility colors:
    Green for Internet
Flashing Yellow for AirPort Extreme (errors: a) no Internet conncetion, and b) no DNS server)
    Green for AirPort Express
    sub-menus:
    1) Internet, set to "DHCP", nothing listed for IP Address; the Subnet Mask and Router Address have assigned numberes; the last three windows are empty.
    2) Wireless, set to "WPA2 Personal"
    3) Network, set to "Off (Bridge Mode)
Any solutions would be most welcomed - the idiot at Comcast was insultingly unhelpful.  He said that since I was able to successfully connect to the Internet, and that the modem was successfully pinging back to Comcast, that the problem was with the AirPort Extreme.

Many thanks for your reply.  I think number 3) below gets to the crux:
    1) The MBP is on my network, for sure, not a neighbor's.  I'm doing all of this wirelessly, though tested the modem via Ethernet to make sure the modem was working.
    2) I reverted to the Verizon DSL modem, it did a handshake with the AE, and all the computers were successfully connected in seconds.
    3)  Network set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" is how all the computers are successfully connecting via Verizon, so what am I doing wrong when using Comcast?  If I set it to "DHCP and NAT" or "DHCP only" I would have to enter a range of DHCP addresses (Comcast's *might* be 192.168.100.1, but not entirely sure (any help on that - might solve the problem?)
Extreme/Express - that was a mistake.  I'm solely using an Extreme for this setup, though I also have an Express, I've temporarily taken it out of the network to try to resolve the issues.
    Thanks again!

  • Problem with routing voice isp

    Hi Guys,
I want to add a SIP trunk on my existing network. My ISP offers me on there switch 2900 with a single IP which i have to lead to my 3cx configuration on a HyperV.
What configuration do I need to make, to route the voice via the separate voice network ?
    Help appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Beano

    Hello,
First of all is important to say that this is not officially supported as PBR is not yet implemented on ASA firewalls.
There are some tweaks that you can do to try to make this happens (not 100% sure if will work due to the nature of this protocol opening pinholes) and of course would not recommended for any real scenario.
My best recommendation is to place a router in front of the Firewall (Just forwarding all traffic, no NAT being done there but performing the PBR for you).

  • Problem with Comcast Internet Service with Airport Extreme

Hello friends. I am having an issue with my Comcast service and am wondering if I can resolve this problem before the service person arrives tomorrow morning. I am certain it is a Comcast issue as I am able to access another wireless network. I have reset the modem and taken the backup batteries and them back in, reset the Airport Extreme, checked all of the cables and removed them and put them back in, and shut down my computer a number of times in the last couple of hours. I have even had Comcast reset the modem remotely. The Comcast person who helped me wasnt able to figure this out. And I got disconnected from Comcast a number of times!
If anyone has a solution, at least I have my iPhone so please contact me if you have an idea of what might be happening.
    Thank you

If you (temporarily) connect your iMac directly to the Comcast modem by Ethernet, can it access the Internet? If it can, note the values for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router Address, and DNS Server(s) that your iMac got by using System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > Advanced > TCP/IP & > DNS. Note: Please don't post the values; just keep them handy as you will need to refer to them in a sec.
Now, power down your network and reconfigure it so that the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) is now connected to the modem, and the iMac is connected to the AEBSn by Ethernet. In this configuration, can the iMac access the Internet now? If not, use the AirPort Utility to look up the same values that you just noted earlier. You will find these on the Internet > Internet Connection tab in the Utility when running in the Manual Setup mode. Do they match? Note: The IP Address may be off a digit, but the other values should be the same. Were they? If not, then the issue is that the modem & AEBSn are not communicating with each other. Usually a power-down/power-up sequence resolves this.

  • Did the update to Firefox today and now having problems with Comcast

I did the update to Firefox today. I am able to log into Comcast, but am having trouble with staying logged in. I go to the home page, it tells me I am not logged in, so I go to the log in page, log in, and it takes me back to the home page showing that I am logged in. When I try to go access my email, instead of taking me to that page, it just takes me back to the log in page. It also does this when I navigate anywhere else on the site. Help!

  • WRT54G Ver 6 problem with Comcast website

Comcast has redone their webite and I can no longer access it. IE times out waiting on a blue screen. Comcast has stated my Linksys firmware must be upgraded to work with their new site yet I have no problems reaching any other websites. Any thoughts? Plus, how would I upgrade the firmware?

Yes, Comcast screwed up.... As of this morning, it still doesn't work. They said they are trying to fix it so a firmware upgrade wouldn't be required. Going on for almost a month. You can use search.comcast.net to get access to email.. Firmware is available on the Linksys support page.. You download it to your XP computer.... I think you have to expand it (double click the file)... cable your computer directly to the router.. access the router page at http://192.168.1.1.... look for Administration Tab then Firmware Upgrade.. Point the router to the file on the PC. WAIT for it to be done. Note: Mac's don't appear to work as a file location to Linksys (which is my problem).

  • IChat video problems with Netgear RangeMax WPN824 MIMO

I have spent the last week reading numerous threads re: issues with video conferencing and Netgear "MIMO" routers. I believe I have tried every possible suggestion from the available discussions, still to no avail.
Specifically, I am trying to video conference with my brother, who also has the same Netgear RangeMax WPN824 MIMO router, by the way. I have a Macbook Pro and he has a brand new Macbook. I have cable broadband w/ Adelphia/Time Warner connected to Motorola Surfboard modem -- to Netgear wireless router -- to Macbook Pro. He has cable broadband w/ Adelphia/Time Warner connected to RCA broadband modem -- to Netgear wireless router -- to Macbook.
Current settings for both of us are as such: iChat port set to 443, UPnP is on, SPI firewall is off, Quicktime streaming set to 1.5 Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN, video bandwidth limit is set to "None", "Block UDP traffic" is off. Have tried with apple firewall off and on.
Due to all the previous threads, I am assuming the problem is with the Netgear RangeMax MIMO routers.
    Q:
    1. Does anyone have any further suggestions/comments on getting around this issue?? I would certainly appreciate any help as we would both prefer to use iChat rather than Skype, which we have been using with no problems.
    2. Should we give up on the Netgear RangeMax routers, or are there people out there who have been able to successfully use this specific wireless router to video chat with iChat??

  • HT201250 time capsule problem with comcast

I have tried to Power down and back my Comcast cable modem and my Time Capsule and still can't connect to  my T.C. wirelessly anymore.
    I swiched from AT&T 2wire -----> Time Capsule
    To:     Comcast's   SB6141 -----> Time Capsule
    Thanks

Here is the power sequence for cable modems and routers.
    Router - Time CapsulePower off.
    SB6141 - Cable modem
    Power off.
    Wait 30 seconds
Power on and wait for all lights except the bottom one which would be your T.C.
    Router - Time CapsulePower on
There is nothing to configure on your SB6141 cable modem. You might try a different Ethernet port in the rare possibility that the current port has gone bad. These are rock solid cable modems. Have the single-port SB6121.
You will need to run Air Port Utility. My Internet connection screen is set to Share a public IP address. And on the Internet tab, Configure IPv4 Using DHCP. Let the cable modem populate all the addresses on this screen and the DNS servers. Set up your LAN within the DHCP tab. I used 1 day for the lease. In Advanced -> IPv6, it is set to Link-Local only.
I gave my Airport Extreme a Name and intense password. Setting time automatically. Did not allow setup over WAN. Wireless Mode is Create a wireless network. Radio channel selection is automatic, and WPA2 security is up. I am running two wireless networks: 2.4Ghz 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n, and a 5Ghz with wide channels.
Don't forget to update the Time Capsule.
In System Preferences >Network, you may want to remove the wireless service and recreate it. On the Wireless > Advanced Screen, you will want to add the Time Capsule SSID to Preferred Networks, and select Remember networks this computer has joined. Then Apply.
If all of this hasn't helped, ask Comcast to ping your cable modem and see if there are any network issues between you and their head end. Occasionally, Comcast gets DNS amnesia and nothing works until they restore it.
    Hope this helps.

  • BILLING PROBLEMS WITH COMCAST

I have an issue.  In June I paid my bill of $89 electronically to Comcast and I received two emails verifying that I had made the payment.  I also signed up for the automatic payment.  Then on my next bill I am informed that the payment was returned and I was charged a $30 dollar return fee on top of the $89 I owed previously plus the new month fee.  I never received an email informing me that the payment was returned.  So today I paid the $209 bill with my credit card and changed the automatic payment.  When I tried to call ComCast Billing, I was hung up on and when I immediately called back I was on hold for over an hour an my phone call was never answered.  This would not be as bad if the reliability of ComCast internet was better.  For the past two weeks, the internet drops at 8 pm every night for 15 minutes.  My wife says it is ComCast throttling our internet.  I believe her because when I can ComCast to inquire about it, I get stupid answers like it is a loose cable on my modem or something like that.Talk about complete disappointment with a provider.  If Verizon Fios was available, I would drop ComCast in a heart beat and never look back.  VERIZON FIOS is the best.  If you are ever given the option between ComCast and Verizon Fios, go with Verizon.  You will never be disappointed with the service, BILLING and people.
