IChat AV progress but no cigar

I've been trying to troubleshoot the problem with iChat AV video chat for about 2 months. With the help of many posters to this forum I've made some progress and would like to share that information in the hope that someone may have additional insight.
Until my sister (East Coast USA) and I (West Coast USA) upgraded to 10.4.8 everything was fine. She on a Powerbook (PowerPC) 15 inch and me on either an eMac or Powerbook (Powerbook) 15 inch. She has Cable with approximately 1.5 - 3.0 Mbps. I have DSL with approximately 200 - 384 Kbps. We both connect through Belkin wireless 802.11g routers to our respective modems. We have the router firewalls ON and Mac OS firewalls ON by default.
For more than a year we never had to adjust any of the above settings. We just started up iChat and could videochat through AIM without any problems. After the upgrade to 10.4.8 we were able to send an invitation to begin a video chat but then the wheel spins, eventually times out, and an error message appears "There was a communication error during your chat..." Do you want to send a report to Apple? Yes or No? I don't want to be cynical here but.....I've been sending error reports for more than 2 months now....
After many weeks I finally did the not-so-easy experiment of connecting my eMac directly to my DSL modem with an ethernet cable (bypassing my wireless router). It worked! I was able to videochat with my sister without any problem even though she was still connected via wireless router. The bad news is that when I reconnected my wireless router and restarted my eMac with wireless connection I could no longer videochat with my sister.
Though not a complete solution I thought we had narrowed the scope of the problem to my wireless connection. Thanks to the helpful suggestions of many on this forum too numerous to mention by name I made the following changes which seemed to work:
1. I kept the Mac OS Firewall ON and created a new configuration with 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5678, 16384-16403 open in TCP and UDP.
2. In System Preferences/Quicktime/Streaming I set Streaming speed to 256 kbps.
3. In iChat preferences/Video/bandwidth limit set to "none" and iChat Preferences//Account/Server Settings port set to 443 instead of 5190.
With these settings and my eMac connected via wireless router I was able to videochat with Defcom1 on AIM in the UK (Thank you Tony!) and I also successfully connected to the appleu3test01 and 02 sites. I do not know whether Tony and the Apple test sites are connected via wired or wireless connections.
After all of this I thought I would once again be able to videochat with my sister when I was connected to the internet via wireless router. No such luck. Once again, I got the same "communication error" when trying to initiate a videochat with her.
In one last, desperate attempt to fix the problem my sister and I reasoned that maybe it would work if we changed her TCP and UDP ports, Quicktime streaming speed, etc. as I did (see above). Unfortunately, that did not work. We keep getting the same error message. It seems that when both of us are connected via wireless router none of the previously mentioned changes seem to work. The only time we've had it work is when one of us is directly connected via ethernet to our broadband modem.
After having the benefit of wireless iChat AV for so long it is really a disappointment to have this problem. What ever happened to Plug and Play?
I hope someone from Apple is reading this. As a long time advocate and shareholder you need to know: This is not good for customer loyalty!
Meanwhile, if anyone has any additional suggestions while Apple figures out how to fix this, please let me know. Your help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Ralph,
The other end is configured exactly the same as my end; same hardware and software and configuration (I helped my sister get her computers and wireless networks installed and maintained). Only difference is that she has Cable broadband and I have DSL.
Neither of us has VoIP. I once installed Skype (don't remember exactly when but I think it was this past summer) but I've never used it. I've seen posts that Skype can cause a problem with iChat but the ports I've opened should still enable iChat AV to work even if Skype is installed. I haven't tried uninstalling Skype and I don't know if there is an uninstall application.
I checked the Belkin web site and there was a new firware update posted in September. I haven't tried installing it yet - I have a question in to Belkin to see if they know of any conflicts with 10.4.8 and if they recommend installing the firware update.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions related to Skype.
Thanks,
Geneland
Hi Geneland,
The Virtual Server is the name this device has for
Port Forwarding.
Sometimes having a listing in here and having UPnP
activated the same time can be be problem. As you
say it worked before I would not worry about this too
much.
From what you tell me it does not obviously seem to
be your end.
Can you tell me how the other end is configured ?
Also does either ISP involved offer a VoIP service ?
Or do either of you have an VoIP service or equipment

    Hi bubbles213,
The best way to move information from one iOS device to another is to back up the device using iCloud or iTunes (or both), and then restoring the new device from it.  This article will walk you through the steps:
Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device

  • IChat recognizes camera but shows a black screen

Hi, I'm trying to use a Panasonic GS15 Firewire camera with iChat. iChat knows the camera's there but when it's supposed to be showing what the camera sees, all that's there is a black screen. Any ideas? I've used the camera many times with iMovie, so I'm not sure what the problem would be...

    Hi starmand,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
The camera you talk about does not appear specifically in this list http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html
It does say to contact Panasonic though.
If you camera has multiple output modes such as TV signals, mpegs or DV make sure it is set to DV.

  • IChat with audio but video NOT working.

I have been using iChat regulary for almost a year now with no problems whatsoever. Suddenly I cannot get a video conference going with my brother. Whether he or I initiates it it does the same thing. The conference is initiated each of us seeing a box with ourselves in it. Then when it is supposed to shoot yourself up into the corner and make you small and the other person pops up, I freeze and shoot to the corner as a frozen image. I see him just fine, but he continues to see only himself and he can HEAR us just fine. I have successfully chatted with 2 other people right before and after. I also tried to do a multi-person chat and it worked fine between myself and the third person, but as soon as my brother popped on (he took a bit longer to respond) I froze but I could still see and hear him and the other person just fine, and they could see and hear each other. But neither could see me. It also works fine between just him and another person. What in the world is going on?!?

    Hi Angleafx,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
    Could be several things.
    1) DO basic Maintenance at your end.
See the links to Cocktail http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=122021
MacJanitor is a specific Utility for running the Cron Scripts.
After this it may be your ISP is doing something to your Connection speed that effects the Bandwidth.
Is you brother on a connection speed that is vastly different from your other contacts ?

  • IChat will open but no window shows

iChat has unexpectedly quit. Buddy list will not appear or any type of login screen. The tool bar across the top will show up but there are no ways of opening anything (everything is in grey). All updates are up to date on this computer and a copy of it was given to me by a friend over Blue Tooth and this will not open either.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
So in the iChat Menu bar you cannot get to Preferences in the iChat Menu or see any Screen Name listed in th Windows Menu ?
Many items will be grey if there are no windows as a front window is needed to change many items.
However it is possible to Login with Buddy Lists being Hidden (Use the red Button/blob) and then iChat Restarted. iChat "Remembers" that the window is not On view but does still list Logged in name in the Window Menu (Use Listed Keystrokes to bring Window in to view)
A Copy of what was given over Blue Tooth ?

  • CCS - Making Progress But...

I started from scratch by creating a block model so I can understand how CSS works to control the layout of my site. I understand it so much better now.
    http://www.billyraygun.com/brd/index.html
However, as I build the site, I end up with a blank space above and below my navBar and above my footer. The link below is how things are progressing compared to my block model link above.
    http://www.billyraygun.com/brd2/index.html
I can't figure out why the extra space is happening. When I change my background position from bottom left, to top left, all it does is move the dead space to another location. It doesn't solve my problem of removing the space(s) entirely.
I'm sure this is a simple fix, but I can't figure it out and could use some help please.
    Regards,
    william-01

Browser variation being what it is, you may never achieve exactly what you want.  CSS divisions do not behave the same as tables.  So unless you build your site entirely with images, it's never going to look 100% exactly like a PhotoShop comp.
Remain flexible with your designs.  Don't spend too much time agonizing over stuff you can't control. A couple of pixels here or there are not going to matter one bit to your site visitors.  What matters most is how well the site performs and if it's web accessible for all users.
    Good luck with your project,
    Nancy O.

We have three accounts set up on our machine. Two of the accounts are working just fine. The third is having issues! I'm new at this - just started with the new mac back in March, and I have no idea where to even turn for help. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you might be willing to give!
    Vivian

    Hi again Viv,
Bare with me, this is a bit longwinded.
It is actually an account I set up for my daughter who has limited computer knowledge.
She was using iChat - and according to her, she just assumed I turned
off the internet and iChat on her.
Hmm yes, you must of turned it off w/ your magic powers;)
Ok thanks, for the info, not an admin account.
Yes, those are the correct files you moved.
Are you running a ppc mac or a new Mac intel?
    - Lets concentrate on Safari first, then ichat.
Do all the accounts, admin included, have Safari on the Desktop?
    If so move them back.
And, I believe I have moved Safari into the application window.
The icons appear for a folder called Safari and Safari.app both appear.
Now I tried to reset the preferences but could not open
Ok, The plist file will be recreated when Safari is opened, should I presume it opened but you could not Go to Safari Preferences?
Let try to resolve the two Safari icons in the Application folder, first.
Is the Finder Window titled "Applications" on top? (see image posted)
Click on the Safari.app (that is the proper extension for Safari)
I trust that is the Application, the other maybe an alias icon,
is there a little arrow on the Safari icon without the.app extension?
To see which is the real Safari application....
    In the Finder, Application window,
Click once onSafari.app to highlight it,
Now click on the " ⌘" (Command key)
    along with the "g" + "i" keys a "Get Info"should open,
What is the size & date created of the Safari.app icon?
    Does the system own it?
Check the same on the other,
What is the size & date created of the other Safari icon
If there is a goodly amount of difference in size & date created
move the one with the smaller size & most recent date,
to the "Moved Folder" you created.
    ------------Now------
Make sure all Applications in the Dock show to be QUIT no black triangles under the Icons.
    Now in the Applications window,
Do you see the "Utilities Folder", double click to open that
Look for the "Disk Utility", double click to launch it.
See the HD in the left side bar.
    Click on the HD.
Once you click on it, you will see the toolbar,
    Click on "First Aid" tab
Now click on button "Disk permissions repair" which is also on the left side of the window, run "repair' not verify.
Let it run do not disrupt it, if it has not been run before it should take some time
When it stops running, if you receive any errors,
    Run repair permissions again.
When you get the Message that the Permissions have been repaired or verified, form the Disk Utility menu bar,
    Under Disk Utility, click quit.
    Now under the 
Click on Restart, when the mac has restarted, restart it once more.
let us know if you have any questions.

  • Ichat logged on but not working

My sister and I cannot see each other on our buddy lists even though we're both online and logged on. It worked before but she's recently upgraded to Leopard on an a slightly older model ibook(?) I believe it is, and I'm on a MacBook Pro. Is there a setting she or I need to change. ichat worked fine before but not sure if it's due to her upgrade, just thought we weren't online at the same time or not.

    Try E Boyd's fix.
"I've had this problem for weeks until tonight. I tried all the fixes listed and nothing seemed work. Here's what fixed it...I went to ichat>preferences>accounts and deleted my account...I then re-entered all the information as if it was a new account and all my buddies were on the list...including the entry that would disappear after 5 seconds. Let me know if this works."

  • IChat AV worked - but not anymore!

    Hello,
A week ago I tried to do my first iChat AV session with my new internet set up:
    iChat Version 4.0.8 (619)
iMac IC2Duo 2.4 Ghz (with Airport card) runing OS X 10.5.8
Airport Express in bridge mode (I love AirTunes!)
Gateway 2wire 2701HG-G wireless modem (ADSL in DHCP)
Since it did not work, I did some reading on the Apple Forums. I managed to reboot the modem, set up 'Port Forwarding' for that modem and bingo: iChat AV worked beautifully, with my Apple firewall on (but allowing iChat connections) and Screen sharing on. I could even see my friends' screen, a beauty!
But now, 6 days later, iChat AV no longer works. iChat text works fine. I can't even do a session with Appleutest3test02.
I think it has to do with DHCP leases b/c as I look through my Mac's and modem's configuration, I noticed one (or more) of the IPs changed. The modem is set to release it's IP Lease every 72 hours, some that probably messes it up.
I've been trying to read some more, but this one is beyond me: I'm stumped. I'm not sure if I can/should make the modem stick to a single IP + I don't know how to 'reset' my Mac's/iChat's/Airport's settings to allow the new IPs.
Hopefully someone knows how this works (below is the Error report without the binary image descriptions)
    Thanks ahead of time!

    Hi,
In most cases the ISP uses DHCP to give your Modem an IP - called your Public IP.
In the case of a cable modem it is likely that it does not route and will pass the Public IP on to the next device, computer or router.
A DSL modem might well route.
So if the modem routes it will not pass the Public IP on and will issues a set of LAN IPs to a router or computer.
By Default it will be set to Issues the IPs automatically using DHCP.
Routers and computers by default ask to get an IP by DHCP.
Routers and modems recognise not to pass on Public IPs when the route. However they will pass on LAN IPs meaning you can have your computer getting two IPs from a modem that routes and a router that is in between.
There are several ways to stop a modem or router issuing IPs to computers.
On some modems you can put them in to what is called Bridge Mode. Effectively all routing action is stopped and it becomes like the older dial-up modem except it is most likely Ethernet cables running to it.
You can also set it to Static Routing. In This DHCP is turned off in the Modem or router and you manually enter the info several text fields on the computer or router that comes next.
You need the IP of the Routing Device (Sometimes called Gateway IP) and the Subnet Mask and DNS servers info. You then choose the IP that the computer or router is going to use. (Like the Pic I showed earlier).
There are limited set of IPs that are reserved for LAN IP addresses.
    Anything start 192.168.xxx.xxx
    Anything starting 10.xxx.xxx.xxx
    A range between 172.16.xxx.xxx through to 172.32.xxx.xxx
(In these cases xxx stands for a number between 0 and 254 or 1 and 255 - there are only 255 numbers but some go 0 to 245 and some 1 to 255)
Having two DHCP servers on your LAN is considered to be not good Networking.
A small number of routers can be put into Bridge Mode - like Airport devices - which then leave the Modem, if it routes, doing DHCP.
    Pause.
    <hr>
Ok. In setting this up you may lose Internet Connection at various stages whilst you set things up.
Lets take a Cable Modem first that does not route.
We do not have to worry about anything until we get to the router to computer part (provided you have Internet Connection AND can Web Browse and get Mail in your favoured Apps)
IF the Router does UPnP or in the case of an Airport Device, Port Mapping Protocol (PMP or NAT-PMP) then this can be used as both methods allow the apps to have the ports they want open and will also allow Multiple Computers to use the same ports - so if the IP changes then the computer and app can still work.
Lets presume we want to set Static (Manually on the Mac) routing anyway.
In the case of the Airport Base Station this is fairly simple.
You go to Applications/Utilities on the Mac and a open the Airport Utility.
If several Airports show Up then you select your one.
You then use the Edit Buttons to get to the Internet iCon Pane.
At the bottom it has a drop down which by default is set to Share a Public IP (it presumes a Cable modem but will share the the IP (Connect computers to the IP) it is getting Upstream side).
You needs some info first from the top part of the Screen.
DNS Server, Subnet Mask and the IP the Airport Base Station is using on the LAN Side (It will be one of the ranges shown above - older models tend to be 10.0.1.1 and later ones 192.168.1.1)
You can now set "Share A Public IP" drop down to "Bridge (Off) Mode.
You will now lose the Internet.
On the Mac In System > Preferences > Network you need to select either Ethernet or Airport depending how you connect to the Airport Base Station.
Set the drop down to Manually.
In Ethernet you can enter the Info in the required boxes.
In Airport you have to use the Advanced Button and then the tabs.
You can then choose the IP to use.
If the Airport is at 10.0.1.1 then it can be anything between 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.1.255 (The first three give you the range of IPs and must match the first three of the Airport Base Station's number. You cannot chose the IP the Base Station has or exceed the 255 number (or 254 on ones that use zeros).
So from the top in Ethernet it will read:-
    Manually in the drop down
192.168.1.2 (Presuming the "Router IP" is 192.168.1.1)
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 (this is a common example)
DNS Servers 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3 (these are two Public DNS Servers but your modem should make your ISP's appear in the Airport Base station from the ISP)
Router IP = 192.168.1.1 (in this Example).
You should now have the Internet back.
    Repeat on other computers.
    Re 1)
    Lease times.
Most devices will drop the Lease only when the computer is turned Off and left Off past the lease time.
Also most will have a setting that may read shorter but is continuous.
On some devices you can set Reserved IPs for the relevant Card on the computer (Airport or Ethernet) by it's Individual ID called it's Media Access Card address, MAC in capitals for short). The naming of this Reservation can vary device to device (infinity, Reservation, Extended Lease).
Re 2) I think I have covered this above.
Re 3) as I have said the Lease time is not so important.
If you have several computers it can pay to turn them on in the same order if you turn them Off or set Static/Manual routing.
Re 4) IPv4 and IPv6 actually give your Ethernet card two MAC addresses.
This can create issues if your ISP supports IPv6.
It can pay to turn this Off.
What we need to know here is what is the modem doing as far as routing is concerned ?
If you have a cable modem that does not route and the Airport is in Bridge Mode then you should see the Public IP from the ISP.
Tell us the first two parts of the Number please.
    Re 5)
Not all devices do permanent Linking of MAC addresses or even computer/router names to hold IPs as you can set Static Routing.
    Re 6)
It will be easier if you tell us the Device Make and Model number as there are site where we can link you to Pics. (and look at wording ourselves)
    Re 7)
This has too many variables based on the answer to 6) and the semantics of different device manufacturers to offer a clear answer here.
Going back to my Pic though, you can set the number of IPs in the DHCP range on some devices.
You can in fact use a mixture of Static IPs and a reduced range of DHCP Issued ones.In this case it may pay for you to post a pic On-Line somewhere for us to see or email a me a pic of the Screen Shot of that page. (my email can be found clicking my name on the left).
    Summary,
I think I have covered the broader bits you have not discovered yet although I have left out about which ports are open by default if you are not using UPnP in the modem.
(I have also written with an eye to other readers and other devices)
I have listed the way to set Static routing.
Using UPnP does away with worrying about the IP changing in the set up you describe.
The IP changing only becomes important if the modem is using Port Forwarding to open the ports for iChat (Or it's extreme form of DMZ).
Could you confirm that this is what you are doing ?
Can you answer the question or post new ones if you have not under stood anything ?
Basically Routing DSL modem to Airport in Bridge Mode to computer is good.
It will be about how the ports are opened that will govern how you proceed from here.

Last time I checked they did not have any support pages for AIM 6.8 that came out on the 10th June 2008.
The firewall on the PC tends to have to be On but apps allowed as Exceptions
