IChat AV software?

hey, i was just wondering how I could get iChat AV reinstalled on my iBook G4. i had some problems with it earlier and this resulted in iChat being erased from my system. I want to buy an iSight, but it requires iChat. Someone please help.
Thanks, Chase

Hi Chase,
It's already in the Mac OS disks that came with your iBook or on the Tiger DVD. You'll need a utility called Pacifist though to extract the application. You can get it from here:
http://www.charlessoft.com/
Once extracted and installed you can then run Software Update to upgrade iChat to the latest version.

    Powerbook G4 & PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hello Dave:
You mentioned upgrade - was this an incremental upgrade (e.g. 10.4.2>10.4.3) or an upgrade to 10.4.x? If it was an incremental update, try Balto's reinstall of the incremental upgrade.
An archive and install upgrade will preserve all of your programs, settings, and files and install a fresh copy of OS X. It also creates a rather large "previous system" folder that is kind of like a spare tire. When everything is running well, you can trash it (I keep mine about two weeks).
As an aside, A&I takes about an hour or so. I prefer it to other upgrade methods.

  • IChat AV software repeatedly logins in rapidly

I've used iChat in the past success. I've since bought a new MacBook and am using Leopard, etc...so, the system is all new but my account is old.
But when logging in, iChat repeatedly logs in rapidly...in flashes on the screen. Often, the system kicks me off with an error saying I've tried to log in too many times in a short period of time.
On the times that it does manage to log in without the flashing thing, I can see my buddy list but they all appear offline. I've been on the phone with my family member who was online with iChat but the software still tells me they are not.
Any help would be great...thanks so much Mac community!!!

    Hi,
And you did the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist deletion ?
    (And restarted iChat )
You have tried the Port Change.
I would download and run the combo Update at this stage.
I am presuming you are at 10.5.6

  • Failed to start iChat because did not respond"

Seems to be a lot of this sort of trouble going on! I bought three iSight cameras for Christmas. We can IM using iChat and AIM, but none of us are able to connect with video or audio.
Thought about setting up everyone with a .Mac account, but that costs even more money and apparently doesn't solve the problem.
    The specs:
One PowerBook G4, one iBook G3, one iMac G4
Two machines are using OS 10.4.3 and the other is running 10.3.9
We have tried turning off the OS X firewall on all machines
We have enabled specific ports in Sharing
As for the connectivity: We're connecting to the Web using a white Airport unit with the latest software and firmware installed on two machines connected to BellSouth DSL using an Alcatel modem...and we're direct to Alltel Telephone using a Siemen's DSL modem on the other machine; Alltel says it doesn't block any ports
Two machines are running iChat v3, the other is running iChat v2
All connections fail with the "...did not respond" message, although, of course, we did respond
The three icons at the bottom of the video window remain greyed out
We are all able to recieve video from the Apple AIM test address
Does it sound like a port problem with ISPs?
Is it a glitch in iChat AV software?
Am I missing something here? We spent $450 on cameras and another $60 to buy the stupid adaptors so the cameras could be mounted on a iMacs. I hate to think I just threw away that much money.

One way or another, the problems should be solvable, so do not despair.
Try connecting to me at [email protected] or to another tester for starters.

  • IChat AV/iSight Program for OS 10.4.11

I just purchased an older replacement G5 iMac which came with a external iSight cam/mike.  I find no iChat/iSight software on the hard drive within its existing OS 10.4.11. Where can I get the iChat AV / iSight program? Can it be found on the original OS.10 that came with my now useless first G5 iMac?   Any help will be appreciated.   rgs

iChat is automatically installed in your Mac's Applications folder with Mac OS X.
Unless someone has moved it, you should be able to navigate to it using
the Finder > Go > Applications menu command.
Reinstalling Tiger (OS X 10.4) will automatically put iChat in the correct location.  However, if you want to reinstall ONLY iChat, the process is discussed at http://discussions.apple.com/thread/1486891
To avoid possible problems that might occur due to other previous "modifications" the previous owner(s) may have made, I would zero the Mac's hard drive and do a clean install of Tiger before I installed anything else.  Use the Disk Utility on the OS X
install DVD that came with the Mac to securely erase the disk with one write of zeros before you install Tiger.  When finished with the erase and install, use the
Mac's Software Update... to apply all needed updates before adding any other software.

  • I think I broke my iChat ...

I installed iChat Extender to just see what it would do (and didn't back up iChat ... yes yes). Now even after several tips that I found in this forum as well as on MacOSXhints.com I cannot return my iChat to its previous functionality ... I'd prefer not to reinstall the system to fix this.
Choosing Current iTunes Track from the Buddy List window does just that ... shows the correct track and title, etc. Choosing it, however, from the menubar gives me %Track - %Album. Now, I've attempted fixing this in the Terminal by doing this:
defaults write com.apple.iChatAgent iTunesMessageFormat -string 'iTunes: %Track'
    killall iChatAgent
... but alas ... I still get the same %Track - %Album as my available message when I choose from the menu bar.
Tips? I'd like to get this back to normal.

    Hi Ross,
Have you unistalled or trashed all the bits to Chat Extender ?
It sounds like part of it is still active.
If part of the Add-on is still active then reinstalling the application which can be done will not cure the problem.
Yep. I've done it by hand and by using AppZapper ... all seems to be gone.
There is no "Uninstall" option as it is simply an app bundle that when run tosses some extra stuff in the Application Support folder. I've deleted the app bundle, the folder in Application Support as well as the .plist ... still getting issues.
I don't think uninstalling it is the issue.
When iChat Extender makes the changes to iChat it overwrites some stuff within the iChat application. Yes, the developer of the iChat Extender software says that you should make a backup ... which of course, I didn't. So ... I'm really looking for what iChat should be set back to.
Based upon what I put in the original post, it seems that the necessary things had been addressed with the changes in the Terminal ... however, in action, it seems not.
    Tips?

  • IChat Connects then Disconnects

So I was setting up my girlfriends brand new MacBook last night, and iChat wouldn't work. We ran all of the software updates before trying to use it, so it was up to 3.1.7. When we launch iChat, it connects for half a second (we can see her buddy list), but then instantly disconnects with the message:
    lost connection with aim
the connection to the host was unexpectedly lost
Heres what I tried to do: I deleted the iChat app and reinstalled it from the installation CD. That was version 3.1.4. It had the same problem, and even after deleting the receipt for the ichat update, software update still wouldn't run the 3.1.7 updater. So now shes stuck on 3.1.4 and it still won't connect. At first I thought it might be some kind of strange network issue, but I downloaded AOL's AIM client and it connects no problem over and over.
Is there a place I can go to download an ichat "installer"? I'd rather NOT have to do an entire archive and install on a brand new machine, but if I have to I have to I suppose.

    Hi 1008com,
Dave suggested changing the port in iChat to 443.
(a port below the 1024 threshold)
    Have you done this ?
The AIM for Mac application (and the one for the PC) has a fall back set of ports that are also below the 1024 threshold hence it will connect even if it can not find port 5190 open.
The reason we refer to this threshold is that modem and routers are often open below this number but need either UPnP other some other method of allowing ports above that number.
I am not sure from these posts what you have actually done.

  • Motion detection software available?

Hi folks, maybe someone can help me with a lead where to find some motion detection software.
I have an older MacBook with Leopard, iSight camera, and iChat4 in my warehouse. I can start an iChat session from my home machine any time. All works fine. iChat on the MacBook in the warehouse auto-responds exactly as it should.
But here comes the tricky part: I would like to overlay a window on my home machine, i.e. a piece of software, over the iChat window, software thats monitors the iChat window. If it detects motion or audio, it gives some kind of audio alarm on the home machine so I wake up and check the warehouse.
    Is there such software?

    Hi,
Both EvoCam and Security Spy can do this - listed on the bottom left of this page

  • SAFARI/ICHAT CRASHES AFTER 10.4.8

I just updated to tiger 10.4.8. Now I am unable to run Safari, iChat, or Software update for that matter. All programs start to run and then "close unexpectedly" I've tried fixing permissions and reinstalling the update to no avail. This is bad! Is there a way to go back to 10.4.7???

    if you want downgrade.
    insert system dvd
    hold "c" when starting
    select language
select archive&install option (more info http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120-en)
    restart
download your favourite release from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
    install the update
    restart
    repair permissions
now you have clean system folder and library folder and all your date are safe.

  • My 10.6 Upgrade and OD Migration plan

Hi, I wish to share my 10.6 upgrade/migration plan in order to get feedback/comments from people who may have insight/experience doing the same and thus be able to offer advice as to whether my plan is solid or if there's anything I should add/change and any potential pitfalls.
    Background:
    We have:
    200 x clients
    1 x OD/Mail/Firewall/PrimaryDNS/etc server - 10.5.8  (hereafter referred to as ODS1)
    1 x File Server - 10.5.5 (hereafter referred to as FS1)
(current 80GB HDDs in these servers to be upgraded to 1TB)
Reason for upgrade is ODS1 causes all kinds of issues:
    - OD seems to be corrupt (people sometimes can't log in, accounts can't be deleted in workgroup manager)
    - Mail service only comes up sometimes at random intervals upon restart (i.e. sometimes takes half an hour, sometimes won't come up for a whole day or not at all.)
Unable to solve these issues and decided to upgrade this server to 10.6.7 in the hopes of solving problems.  We will also move OD to a separate virtual machine in the process - theory being that if OD has problems we can restart the server without affecting Mail and vice versa.
    Restrictions on upgrade:
ODS1 is an XServe with two network cards (external and internal interfaces for Firewall) and Mail Store & User Directories is on Fibre Channel attached XServe RAID which means:
    - I don't want to buy another fibre channel card so Mail Service has to remain on this XServe unless I move the mail store
    - FW preferably to stay on here because this XServe has 2 network interfaces.
Luckily, very few users use the servers on the weekend so I don't have to worry about taking servers down for the upgrade.
    Plan:
    1. Prepare our new 10.6.7 Open Directory Master.  This will be a virtual machine running through Parallels Bare Metals on an XServe
    Set hostname “ldap.ourcompany.com”.
    Set static IP address
    Install all the latest updates.
Set up as DNS master – import all entries, but change ldap.ourcompany.com to point to this machine.
Set up Open Directory Master with correct SearchBase, etc.
Disable any other services that we don’t need.
    2. Export Users and Groups from ODS1 through Workgroup Manager
    3. Import Users and Groups to new server through Workgroup Manager
3.5. Run script to set all passwords from our list  (Yes I have a list - and I know this is not best practice)
    4. Test: by binding a new computer to this server and logging in with a user account set up on this server.
    5. Backup
Make a backup copy of the new OD Master virtual machine.
On ODS1 and FS1, export all settings from Server Admin onto a thumb drive
Make an archive of Open Directory onto a thumbdrive (Server Admin -> Open Dir -> Archive Tab)
Copy from ODS1 onto some external HDD: Mail store and home directories locted on Fibre Channel attached storage
    Run mailbfr –b /Path/to/backup/volume –full
Clone ODS1 HDD onto 1TB HDD using a caddy
Clone FS1 HDD onto 1TB HDD using a caddy
Remove HDD’s in ODS1 and FS1 and replace with clones and blank 1TB HDDs.
    Implement new OD Master
    6. Update ldap.ourcompany.com DNS entry to point to new server.
    7. On ODS1, change Open Directory Role to Replica.[2]
    8. On FS1, reconfigure Open Directory Replica.
    9. On ODS1, change DNS role to replica and point tonew OD/DNS Master[3]
    10. On FS1, change DNS replica to point to new DNS
    11. On FS1, change DHCP to supply new DNS serveraddresses.
    12. Test:
DHCP supplied LDAP on new computer.
    Mail
Logging into accounts from existing computers
    AFP
    13. Backup again (so if next step fails we have at least achieved setting up new OD server)
Clone FS1 and ODS1 to blank internal 1TB drives.
Swap HD and Backup drive names and change start-up disk in System Prefs to newly named HD disk on both FS1 and ODS1, and restart, effectively testing the clones.
    14. Upgrade ODS1 to 10.6.7
    15. Change ODS1 DNS role to replica and point to newOD Master so that it has a working DNS service during the upgrade process.
    16. Upgrade ODS1 to 10.6.7 in-place with CD
    17. Check Mail settings before starting it.
    18. Test:
    Mail
    Logging into accounts
    Firewall
    DNS Replica
    VPN
Our Company custom scripts previously handled by Lingon (Any alternative to Lingon in 10.6?)
    iChat
    iCal
    Software Update
    WebMail
    19. Point new OD Master’s Software Update to upgraded ODS1
    20. Go Home!
    Any advice?

Ok modified new plan, changes include:
    - FS1 gets upgraded to 10.6 as well
    - no "backup again" done - this will  never be a point we roll back seeing that 10.5 can't be replica of 10.6
    - software update added
    - clean installs rather than in-place upgrades so that we start afresh and hopefully not importing the many problems we were facing on 10.5
    - other little changes
Everthing up to before the "Upgrade FS1" section is done in normal working hours while clients are using the servers and from then onwards, on a weekend.
Prepare our new 10.6 Open Directory Master virtualmachine
    Set hostname to “ldap.ourcompany.com”.
    Set static IP address 192.168.30.30
    Install all the latest updates.
Set up as DNS master – import all entries, butchange ldap.ourcompany.com to point to this machine.
Set up Open Directory Master with correct SearchBase, etc.
Disable any other services that we don’t need.
Export Users and Groups from ODS1 through Workgroup Manager
Import Users and Groups to new server
Run script to set all passwords
Change Home Directories to “None” or if this fails, to a location on the local HDD.  (We use mobile accounts - ideally we need managed local accounts, nothing gets synced to server, so hopefully server home folders are not necessary - in 10.5 it didn't seem to work without having a server home set with a  directory full of empty folders.)
Change software update managed settings in Workgroup Manager to:   http://ods1.ourcompany.com:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog This will only work after ODS1's 10.6 upgrade is complete
Test: by binding a new computer to this server and logging in with a user account set up on this server.
    Backup
Make a backup copy of the new OD Master virtualmachine.
On ODS1 and FS1, export all settings from ServerAdmin onto a thumb drive
Make an archive of Open Directory onto a thumbdrive (Server Admin -> Open Dir -> Archive Tab)
Document all settings on ODS1 and FS1 by takingscreen shots of each pane in Server Admin and RAID Admin for easy referencewhen later setting up the new 10.6 ODS1.
On FS1, document all file shares and permissions
Copy from ODS1: /Volumes/Xserve User RAID and/Volumes/Xserve_Mail_RAID onto external HDD.
Copy from ODS1: /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/ to thumbdrive (required for migrating mail later)
    Run mailbfr –b /Path/to/backup/volume –full
Clone FS1 and ODS1 HD drives to the internal BUdrives.
Make FS1 file shares backup (on separate XRAID)
    Upgrade FS1
Remove HDD’s in FS1 and replace with 3 blank 1TB HDDs.
    Install 10.6 from DVD.
    Install latest updates.
Configure as per previously documented screenshots, but with the following changes:
Make it a replica of the new OD Master instead of ODS1
Add a secondary DNS zone pointing to new DNS server
Configure its DHCP to provide new LDAP server
Set all correct file share permissions aspreviously documented.
    Test:
Attempt to connect to every volume with various different users to test that correct permissions are being applied.
Turn many client computers on to test if correct DHCP settings are received.
    Upgrade ODS1
Do a fresh install of 10.6
Set up all services using documented screenshots, but OD and DNS will be replica instead of Master.
Migrate Mail store by renaming mail folder onthe XRAID to oldmail, then issuing this command:  sudo/usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl —moveMail 0 —cyrusBin "/Volumes/thumb_driveXXXX" --database "/Volumes/X-SERVE_Mail_RAID/oldmail/imap"--sourceSpool "/Volumes/X-SERVE_Mail_RAID/oldmail/spool/imap"--targetSpool "/Volumes/X-SERVE_Mail_RAID/mail/spool/imap/dovecot/mail"
    Test:
    afp://ods1.ourcompany.com./
    Logging into accounts
Start up all computers in the office to makesure mail, managed prefs, DNS, DHCP, etc. work for all computers.
    Firewall
DNS Replica by setting up a computer with staticIP
    VPN
    iChat
    iCal
    Software Update
    WebMail
Point new OD Master’s Software Update toupgraded ODS1
    Go Home!

  • Port info needed to sort out firewall issues

A firewall has been set up in my school. I now find that I cannot connect via iChat, Apple software update, Limewire. Does anyone know what ports need to be opened to let me out?????
There is also a wireless network but on my laptop the airport router defaults to 192.168.0.1 even though its using DCHP. It should be I am told 192.168.0.2
    Any help would be great
    Thanks
    Dave

I don't know offhand what ports those tools use, but maybe I can help you find out. Open a Terminal window, type the following line EXCEPT the carriage return;netstat -n -p tcp | grep SYN_SENTStart one of the tools in question, wait a moment, then hit the carriage return in the Terminal window. I tested this using 'telnet 78.32.198.5' as a "tool", and gottcp4 0 0 10.20.31.105.64498 78.32.198.5.23 SYN_SENTThe fourth column (10.20.31.105.64498) is the local IP/port used by my "tool"; the fifth column is the remote address and port. As you can see, the remote port used for telnet is 23; you should be able to find the remote ports used by iChat, Software Update, and Limewire similarly.

  • External isight vs. internal

How different exactly are the built in isight on a macbook and the external isight sold by apple a while back? i have both because i needed a camera for my stopmotions. Like resolution, color. Also, how does the external hold up to todays standards?

    Hello Snipereye64
Such a well stated and brief question that requires a big answer!
Technically, I suppose the answer to your question depends on which built-in iSight is in your MacBook.
Early MacBooks had a 640x480 (VGA) resolution USB iSight that is the same resolution as the external (Firewire) iSight is use. Given normal webcam distance from the lens and adequate light (video takes more light that normal room lighting), I think the image quality of that built-in iSight is approximately equal to, but different from, my external iSight's.
External iSight has auto-focus so it can offer better images at widely different distances to the subject. It is also easier to attach filters and accessory lenses, but this difference is not really an image quality difference.
If your only use for iSight is video chat, your image quality question can best be answered by your video chat partner, who is the one who sees the image your iSight sends. Here is a comparison video test I made some time back with a chat partner who has both internal and external iSights.
My chat buddy changed NOTHING between the two pictures except which iSight he was using.  I do not see any significant difference in actual image quality between the two. I do see differences in the amount of software image sharpening, contrast, and color balance. These parameters are software-controlled, so different apps might give different results.
If you want to compare the quality of snapshot still images for email or posting on the web, the best way to critically examine image quality is to make a print of the same subject made with both cameras. I have not done this kind of test using my iSight because, although I occasionally make an iSight snapshot to email, I almost always use my 5 and 10MP digital still cameras for images I want to have enough quality to print or post. No webcam offers sufficient image quality for me for prints beyond about 3x4 inches.
You can do your own comparison and judge for yourself with your iSights. Capture an image of your face with both of your iSights. It is best if you do this as near as possible to the same time, same size, and in the same light. Then print both images and look for image quality differences that are important to you Even though you may not use your iSights to make printed images, the prints will more readily reveal any faults in the test images you make.
Current iNtel Macs (other than MacBook Air) that I have checked have a 1280x1024 resolution. This 1.3MP camera has more than 4.25 times as many pixels as the 0.3MP (640x480) cameras. How this additonal resolution is used depends on the software application that is running the camera. When using iChat, I do not notice the resolution difference, but a printed image or one an image made with some other application might give a different answer. iChat's software image sharpening, contrast, and color balance of the 1.3MP iSights seem to be about the same as they were for the earlier built-ins.
Depending on your intended use for your images, you can use "The Test App" from this article to test which built-in iSight you have. However, the best test will likely be how the images made with the software you use looks to you for the purposes you intend.
My old "Rev A" external iSight still works as well as it did new for video chat and an occasional quick video clip for emailing. It is good enough for me.
Please let me know if I missed anything. ;-)

  • PC-Mac camera compatibility

My boyfriend has a PC and I just got a new iBook G4...he has a webcam that works with MSN but won't work with my MSN because it is text only. What is a program that I could use to view his webcam? And then which webcam could I get later so that he would be able to see me? How can we cross the Mac-PC gulf? Please help ASAP as he is in Montana and I am in Minnesota---I haven't seen him in months!

    Rebecca,
I can contact a friend ( PC ) with my iSight and ichat AV software. He has a AIM account and software running on his PC.
It works fine and the AIM account/software is for free.
Hope it works for you two!!

  • USB Webcam with USB1

My father-in-law has an eMac with USB1 and Firewire 400 ports. We want to get him a webcam so that he can ichat with video with the grandchildren. He is running OS 10.4.9 so has the latest iChat AV software.
Assuming that we get him a webcam with UVC support I have two questions:
    - will a USB webcam work at all with USB1 port without additional software?
    - if it will not work, what are our other options?
    Thanks

    Hi Dsgray,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
I have been looking around on this and can not find a specific answer.
The closest seems to be this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB that talks about classes before it talks about speed.
Whether anyone makes a Specific USB 1.1 Video cam would be a different question.

  • Will an iSight work on my old Ti-book 550Mhz?

I really want to utilise an old Titanium PB I have as an iSight base so I can communicate with a family member but I notice that the iSights now shipping state you must have a 600Mhz processor or faster, and my Ti-book only has 550. It also says 3rd party chip upgrades are not supported.
Will the iSight still work? Is there any way round this?
    TIA

    System requirements
    • Macintosh computer with a 600MHz or faster PowerPC G3 or any PowerPC G4 or G5 processor
    • iChat AV software (included with Mac OS X Panther).
    • Mac OS X v10.3 or later
    • Broadband Internet connection (128Kbps or faster transfer speeds)
It actually says you need a 600MHz G3 or any G4 processor. - so it should work fine assuming that you have Panther.
The iSight has a low resolution for a modern device (VGA - 640x480). I'm pretty sure you can use any Firewire based camera (I've used my Canon MV3i camcorder - it's 5 years old and is SVGA 800x600) in iChat AV.
