IChat backgrounds

I like the new feature which inserts new backgrounds, but I'm having trouble with the picture tearing... inserting the background over me...
does anyone know..is this a lighting issue? How do you fix it?

Make sure the lighting is in front of you and as high as you can get it.
I have a very low ceiling with overhead lights that are in shot when I move out and cause problems when I move back in again as the lightig has effectively changed.
It helps but is not crucial if the background is as flat/one colour as possible and that you clothes contrast this.
I have a black chair that is in shot when I move and if I wear dark clothes this bit goes invisible as it matches the background.
A small bright desk light just behind the camera so it does not flare, pointing at you is good.
For best results that I get is when it is daylight from my front door which is behind the screen and therefore in front of me. (more light is better on you as a close subject).
Your movement out and back should change the lighting to the background as little as possible.

  • Ichat backgrounds with imovie?

Can I use the ichat background effects to record a movie with the isight camera in imovie? This should be possible but doesn't seem to be. Thanks!

    Welcome to Discussions, Ermenegildo
I am no certain of exactly what you are trying to do, but you can record "effects" movies using your iSight and Photo Booth. (The Photo Booth version that comes with Leopard also records movies.) By default, the Photo Booth movies are stored in your Pictures > Photo Booth folder.

  • How to Clear / Remove / Delete iChat backgrounds

Did a search and couldn't find anything, but if there is another post please let me know.
Anyway, is it possible to clear the recently used iChat backgrounds? I don't need them saved for each time that I use them. I prefer they go back to empty boxes. Anyone know how to reset them? Thanks.

Currently I can not find a way to empty a choice of Video Background - only replace it with something new.

  • Need Help Creating (more) Complicated iChat Backgrounds/Effects

I was wondering how you can make an iChat background transparent or make the image apply "over" the video.
If anyone has installed an extra effect package, ones such as the mona lisa (a picture of the mona lisa with the eyes and mouth cut out so that you can see the video through those) Like this:
So does anyone know how to make an image like this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
From your Install Disk Install Developer Tools
This will give you Quartz Composer.
This in turn will allow you to Open the Compositions.
Copy (Duplicate) one to work from and experiment.
You will found out how to put a pic of your choice in the place of the one being used.
Some obviously place the Pic to the Background and others as the Foreground with holes "cut in them"
Cutting the holes is done in a Graphics App and th items needs saving as one that supports Transparancy (.gif or .png)

  • ISight/Photo Booth/iChat Background?

Whenever I am in Photo Booth or iChat and I want to take a picture or chat using one of the backgrounds (Paris, etc.) I step out of the frame when prompted to do so, but then when I step back in, my face is covered up in random places by the background itself. This usually happens if there is something on the wall behind me, but now it's starting to happen even if I am standing in front of a totally blank wall.
Why is this, and is there something I can do to make it stop?

    Interesting. (An Observation really)
That Article says it has been modified and it also quotes a Apple Doc Reference number but the Modified Date is the same day as iChat 4 came out.
( I have also not seen it before although I have posted the same or similar information in the iChat forums)

  • Can I record movies with iChat backgrounds?

I was curious if it was possible to record movies in Leopard using the cool new backgrounds like Yosemite, Aquarium? If so how?

    Open PhotoBooth.
Click the left hand tab for Video (looks vaguely like a piece of film)
    Select Effect.
    Press record Button.
    Talk to your self.
Is this what you meant ?
(Also not sure on Time limit if there is one)
The File is put in Home folder/Picture/PhotoBooth and called movie (number).mov which is a Quicktime Movie

  • Rolercoaster iChat background

Anyone know where the background video files are kept?
The rollercoaster background is backwards and I want to reverse it. It makes it seem as if you are going backwards in a rollcoaster, not forwards.

That's pretty funny, but I bet it looked better that way to the brain when viewed. ,Like an optical illusion...your brain sees it differently. ...or I could be talkin out my butt who knows.

  • Screen Saver Problem/bug?

I'm really enjoying leopard. I've only found two minor problems/issues. One is Ichat backgrounds, but I why its not doing what it should and why. The problem I'm trying to Figure out is the screen saver. Specifically the Itunes screen saver. They will load/display up individually fine (loading into the screen saver and in Itunes), but when the screen save tiles them they all appear with a red hue. (Tiger worked fine). Has anyone else had this problem? can it be fixed adjusted (easily)

I've got the same problem on my iMac 20" (Intel 2.0 GHz Core Duo), BUT, the problem occurs on my +*second monitor*+ (over DVI) all the time, but only on some pictures on my main (built in) monitor.
I've tried to create a new Color Profile for the second monitor, but this did not solve the problem.
The problem is also only visible when the screensaver is fully loaded (during the 'loading' of pictures, the color is okay).
I've created a screenshots to my main and external monitor here:
    http://www.gone.nl/example/LeopardiTunes_Saver_ColorCast.jpg
Main monitor (all okay, except for 1 image):

  • IChat 4.0 erase/remove user background

With Leopard it is easy to create funny backround for iChat in addition to the ones that preexist (tour eiffel, fishes, beach or the waterfalls) but does anybody knows how to remove/erase a picture that has been dragged and dropped into a user background? I did not manage to do that...
    Thanks in anticipation,
    best

Thanks a lot for you answer. I did actually a similar thing. I was not able to retrieve the picture file but found the file containing the .mov files used as background in iChat (e.g. rollercoaster.mov)...these files are in System/library/compositions...and replace my picture by a file comprised in that folder: user background.qtz
Maybe a blank picture would be a better idea.

  • IChat and new Background support...Pixelated Video???

    Hi,
Just playing around with Leopard this morning and noticed some more graphics issues. While in a video iChat, I changed my background to the roller coaster and when I come back in the frame, the graphics are pixelated and the audio is choppy. I wonder if this is related to some of the other graphics issues folks are seeing with Leopard.
My machine is a new rev 24" Intel iMac with 2GB of RAM.

I've noticed this too, I think the problem is that there's too much going on in the background. From what I can tell, when you step out of frame it just looks for the colours that are in the background in hopes that your face/clothing doesn't match the same colours as the background. Therefore, if there is some black in the background and your wearing a dark/black shirt, it'll probably get rid of your shirt.
This is pretty lame, but i think the only way to really work around this is the whole "Green screen" trick. Have a BG that has one colour, no shadows, and then step back in. Its just bad because it looked so amazing in the demonstration videos. Oh well...

  • Add webcam to iChat for background versatility

I have iMac 24" use iChat with family. All they see now is background behind me. I want to add webcam with USB cable so I can move around room to show different "things". Onew company told me "USB webcams in general DO NOT work with iChar, You would need to download a USB iChat patch online". I am looking at a Gearhead WC830i webcam. What do I need to do to make this wrk. Thanks for any help.

    For Clarity.
The Mac OS since OS 10.4.9 has included a USB Video Class (UVC) Driver.
USB Video Class cameras are USB 2.0 speed rated and are those that are marked UVC compliant or Vista Certified.
So You need a USB 2.0 port on your computer (some Keyboards are not USB 2.0 even when the computer is) and 10.4.9 or higher + a UVC camera.
    OR....
Other cameras are USB 1.1 and these will most likely work IF...
    1) You have Mac driver for it (See below for more)
    2) IT will need the iUSBCam Utility to get the resultant pic into iChat (effectively a DV Conversion)
The Ecamm page also links to A Camera Guide page with two tables in it.
These highlight some cameras (They are not Exhaustive lists) and which driver they need (Or come with).
In some cases they link to either macam or IOXperts who are two Generic Drivers that works across a range of cameras (Both list which cameras they work with) so even if the camera does not come with a specific Mac Driver, you may find it can be made to work.
It is fair to say that in both cases that the generic USB Drivers or the Mac UVC driver do not always (read as Never) give you the same range of option and features that a Windows drive does (No Pan and Tilt or Zoom).
At this stage I do not have any info on NON UVC Cameras that are USB 2.0 that may need drivers and if they will work with the iUSBCam utility (the chances are they will though)
Of course Old External iSights and other Firewire cameras such as CamCorders with DV output will work.

  • Best practices for setting a background for an iChat?

Is there a way of creating a background setting before the chat invite?
If I do it in the preview window, by clicking on my own camera icon, the background reverts to default by the time I invite somebody.
    doug

    Hi Doug,
If I click the Video icon next to my own pic in the Buddy List to show the Preview of myself and then use the Video Effects I can preset What I want and it stays when I close the Video effects and preview if I then invite some to a chat.
Are you saying this does not work for you ?

  • Good Ideas for New iChat 4 "Green Screen" Backgrounds!

Mine is a TV, so it looks like your on TV
    What are your ideas

I used to use ChatFX and had one like the one with the Net cube in the pic
They have another which added banners to top and bottom which you could add text to. One I had was a scrolling RSS feed from these discussions, although it ws processor hungry.
I am sure it will not be long before someone finds an easy way to add video packs like the smilies used to as they are only Quartz composer items.
(they are inside the Show Package > Contents > Resources after right clicking the app in applications)
Quartz Composer is part of the Developers Tools install

i can no longer log into my ichat linked to my gmail.  right after opening up ichat, receive the following message:  lost connection with jabber.  the server has unexpectedly disconnected.  how to troubleshoot?  thanks.

    Hi,
There can be many reasons why the Login is "up the creek".
Any break in the network at your end whilst logged in will cause  an issue.
A sort of discrepancy between what iChat thinks the state should be and what the server thinks.
If they don't agree the server will refuse to accept.
A Crash at the server end which does not log you out properly will also do it.
Any file at any time can be come corrupted.
Luckily with the iChat .plists they are recreated if removed with an iChat Restart.
If it were AIM you can also get your Account Suspended  and this will not log you in.
(It tends to happen from Chat rooms where people notify AIM about bad behaviour (as they see it) and you have to apply to get Un-suspended).
Most of the big IM services use multiple servers.
Sometimes these go out of Sync.
In the case of AIM this happens when they remove Old unused Screen Names from people's Buddy List prior to making them available for re-registration.  I am not sure if this happens at Google.
You seem to be talking about an account that has worked at Work and having new computer at home.
As I mentioned the Priority thing you have not said that it has coincided with the new computer logging in  (this will kick the work Computer out of Google whether you are logged in  on the Web Mail page or in iChat)
IN addition to that iChat stays partially logged in for Off Line IMs
This is done in the background by a support app called iChatAgent
If your Computer is ON but ichat is not started people can still send you Messages.
Instead of saving these on the server until you login iChat will start up.
Depending if the home Mac is effecting the Work Login it may be holding sway over your Login.
Using your girlfriend's login may have booted her Off Line where she normally uses the name/login.
The AIM Side can be specifically set to allow Multiple Logins and therefore NOT allow them.  If this happens you get a warning and messages to do something about it.
You do not get these in any Jabber or Google Login as the Priority setting is supposed to take care of it.
If the Login works at the Web Mail Login and on one computer then the .plist on the work computer is the most likely issue.
There is a small chance that a Corrupt Buddy Pic (Home Folder/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat/Pictures) may be the cause.
Set this folder to icon view and also use the Finder's View Menu > Show View Options and select icon view.
This should show all pics as their icon.
    Check that all display properly.
At this point I would try a COMBO version update install of the last Update you did over what you have.
This often corrects hard to trace things
    The 10.5.8 COMBO is here

    Glossary
Audio is sound only chats (called Talk on AIM )
Video is Sound and Pictures (where cameras and microphones allow)
account name is synomonous (the same as) with screen name
    Basic Facts
iChat AV 2.0 did come with Panther and at this point is free. (Upgrade to 2.1)
iChat 3 comes with Tiger and supports Multiple person chats
You can chat to AIM based services as long as one of you has a camera. (Currently audio only chats are not possible). Windows users have to running one of the XP incarnations and AIM 5.5 at least to Video.
    What you Need
OS 10.3.x for iChat AV 2.1
iChat ver 2.0 or 2.1 (Now Panther only)
    OS 10.4.x for iChat 3.x
DV input device (camera or DV converter for analogue cameras) See also Exceptions further down.
Free Firewire port (not daisy chained)
An AIM (AOL & Netscape count) or @mac.com account/screen name. (Stick to passwords of 16 characters or less without Special Characters).
    How to make Exceptions Work
Slow Mac or USB cam prior 10.4.9 or non USB Video class cam
    1) Slow (G3/500 and less) computers and those with USB cams need this utility
iChatUSBCam which enables slower machines to connect and enables USB cameras to be seen by iChat. (lower limit 350Mghz)
    2) Analogue cameras can be made to work with a converter like this one.

    How to Start
After getting your account name, start iChat.
It will lead you through a assistant. Ryan's Pics and instructions on this bit
If you launched it before and are starting again make sure iChat is off line.
Go to Preferences in the iChat Menu item. Open the Acounts icon.
Select the type of account it is.
Type in your name (without the @mac .com suffix) and use tab key to enter password.
Server Options button (Server Settings tab in iChat 3.x) should be live at this point. Check that it reads login.oscar.aol.com and the port is 5190.
Close Server Options and hit enter.
    iChat should now log on.
In iChat 3.x there is a check box in the accounts Information tab that says "Use this Account" to be checked to activate it.
    Buddies
You now have to enter Buddies into the Buddies list
Use the "+" button at the bottom of the Buddy list window.
Add New Person or from your address book if you have recorded Buddies account names there.
The first account names you should add are the test accounts shown In Contact Testers or the FAQ here.
