IChat bandwidth settings

According to speedtest.net I have .47 Mb/s download and 0.64 Mb/s upload. My iChat conversation have been marred with poor video and audio quality. Would I gain anything by limiting the bandwidth in iChat and if so, which setting should I choose.
100 kbps
200 kbps
500 kbps
1 Mbps
2 Mbps
Currently, there is no limitation set.

Would I gain anything by limiting the bandwidth in iChat
It should't as it's already using what is available.
You can try limiting it and see if it improves.
What is the network connection speed you are paying for? Set it to the closest setting above that.

• IChat bandwidth problem after upgrading to Quicktime Pro 7.1

I just updated Quicktime Pro 7.1 (from 7.0) and applied the Security update to my iMac G5 1.8 GHz.
My girlfriend and I have been chatting with no problems. She's running an new iMac Dual Core and I have an iMac G5 running 10.3.9. We tried to hook up tonight and kept getting this error:
2006-05-11 21:41:51 -0400: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference.
Detected 48 kbps upstream and 162 kbps downstream bandwidth; 50 kbps required.
We're both on Cinti Bell's Fuse/Zoomtown ADSL so we have plenty of bandwidth. Set iChat bandwidth to None and st Quicktime to 1.5 Mbps T1/internet/LAN.
Any ideas why, after a month of no problems chatting, this bandwidth issue has come up? She's running 4.5 (hasn't upgraded and hasn't sone the just rreleased security update)?

OK - My gal is here for the weekend so it will be next monday evening before we can toubleshoot as I don't know any other place where I can find someone to video chat with for testing purposes. We're using AIM accounts, but like I say, before the upgrade I did it was working fine. I've been through most of the 'usual' from rebuilding permissions, diskwarrior to ensure the disk is OK. Next week I'll trash preferences and such when we troubleshoot.
I appreciate the response. If I find anything out I'll update this thread.

• Bandwidth Settings help for N70

I have recently signed up to view TV via my phone but when I connect I get a bandwidth error message. I dont know how to access and change the bandwidth settings. Can any one help?!?

regarding the squeeze crop issue:
here's a more specific question. If I want squeezed anamorphic 4:3 sequence to come out of FCP (to dump onto digibeta) Should I just leave the aspect ration of the sequence at 16:9 and assume the output from the mac will be 4:3? (this is a system at work - so I can't test)
Essentially in the users manual there's a lot of info for working with anamorphic 16:9, but I can't find any info on taking clips that are native 16:9 and outputting anamorphic 16:9 (4:3 with squeeze)
Anyone know how to do this?

• IChat privacy settings

Every time I try to send a text message on iChat, I get the AIM error message: "Your privacy preferences are set so they prevent you from communicating with this person." Ive gone into my preferences and tried to change my privacy settings, but the allow anyone is checked, and none of my buddies are actually blocked. My whole buddy list is like this, not letting me see if people are online and blocking every message. How can I fix this?

Hi,
First try changing the setting in the Security tab.
If that does not work Open you Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart iChat.

• Ichat Port Settings

Hi,
I work in an office with about 26 people who all use iChat, I have been trying to open the iChat Incoming Ports on our Router as outlined in the Apple Doc #93208. But when I contacted Netgear the Manufacturer of our Router, they said that you can only open up the Ports for one IP Address and that IP Address couldn't be the router.
Is it possible to open the iChat Ports so that everyone in the building can access them or do I really have to specifically Open the Ports for each Machine that uses iChat.
It seems like there should be a way to open the iChat Ports so everyone in the office can benefit, without having to open each Port for every machine.
Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks
Kalagan

Hi Kalagan,
If it has UPnP it is normally shown as an item on the left hand menu near the bottom of the list.
Your device is not mentioned here http://portforward.com/routers.htm
There are other FVS models that might provide some help.
On some Netgears the Services item is where Port Forwarding is normally done. On some this specifies the IP the port is forwarded to. On My DG834GUK this IP specifying is not done and it appears that the port is open to anyone's IP.
Other devices have specific places for Port Triggering.
Again this is table like in formulation.
It can specify the Trigger port, the Protocol that is going to be on and then the port or ports triggered.
At this point there can be some variance. On some the ports can be listed with commas or dashes separating them such as: -
Port 5678 on UDP triggers ports 5060,16384-16403 on UDP
On others only the dash is allowed.
So we end up with a table that looks like this for the single ports
5190 (Both or Any for the Protocol or add tow entries) to trigger port 5190 (Again Both/Any or two entries)
For the Bonjour side.
5297 UDP to trigger 5297 on UDP
5298 (Both/Any) to trigger 5298 (Both/Any)
5353 UDP to trigger port 5353
For Jabber.
5220 on TCP to trigger 5220 on TCP
5222 TCP to trigger 5222 TCP
5223 TCP to trigger 5223 TCP
The AV ports are different in that they are the ones where one port opens others.
On those that allow commas and dashes then like this
5678 on UDP to Trigger ports 5060,5678,16384-16403 (Note the lack of Spaces) On UDP (Some will not like the 5678 restated although it seems to work for single ports)
On those that will not mix single ports and groups then it takes two lines: -
port 5678 on UDP to trigger port 5060 on UDP
Port 5606 to Trigger ports 16384-16403 (All on UDP)
I hope this gives you enough info to work your device out.

• IChat 5.0 - iChat connections got worse since upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Hi. Me and my significant other chat on a dayli basis, so "Improved" video and audio in Snow Leopard (iChat 5.0) seemed like a golden "Must buy". Since I installed it, she has reported issues with my audio and video. She says it lags to the point where she isn't hearing hear a single word (50% of the time). And the video jumps in quallity every 10 seconds, with bit mistakes. Only good thing was that for the first time... Screen Sharing worked!
Now I expected that changed codecs in Snow could mean that if she upgraded, aswell, it would work, but no. Now her video seems to have downgraded in quallity, but I still hear her (Apart from horrible volume jumps)
We've tried the following: Switching to google servers, to realize they didn't support Video. Trying SSL port 443. Turning off and on the feature that let's AOL relay chats, no luck anywhere.
I have an idea why this is... In Leopard, a router with NAT Type 3 on my end, meant that nothing worked. A connection with NAT Type 2 on my end (I use that the most) meant that video and audio worked, but not screen sharing.
I don't know what her NAT type is, but at home, (For her) these problems started, but anywhere else... No problems, at all, no matter where I am!
These clues don't add up for me, and I would love a solution, since Long-Distance relationships are a pain, when I only see her once a month...
Thanks for reading, hoping for support =) (And yes, I am willing to do anything to my router setting, and tell her what to do)

Hi Defcom,
Running /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7 in Terminal shows me that iChat "Sees" the whole of my internet Connection speed.
This will raise the issue of faster and slower Buddies and the iChat Buffering again.
Video Buffering means that Audio can not be matched and if the difference is significant then the Audio will get dropped.
It may be that both ends have to try different iChat Bandwidth settings to get to the point where the video and audio are in sync.
I would also say that I had to start at 500kbps between my G4 and MacBook Pro (Set at the MacBook Pro end on Snow Leopard) but that it does seem to have "Learned" what it can use.

• Long delay changing video metadata

I run iTunes off a G4 server so that members of the house can access the same music library without duplications.
Whenever I change metadata on music tracks, it happens pretty much instantly. But when I change this info on videos, it brings up a progress bar dialog box and takes forever -- usually several minutes -- for each one.
Is this common? It might have to do with the way this info is stored on MPEG-4 files, but it is very annoying. If others are not experiencing this, it may be the result of a problem in iTunes with updating file info over the network. I'd appreciate if you could help shed some light on this problem.

Dear old Road Runner.
Steve has already pointed out the iChat > Bandwidth settings.
This is the best we can suggest to get around the issue that Road Runner and Comcast create with their Data Stream Management.

• No audio on video chat

I was going to video chat with my friend (who is using a 13 inch, macbook pro, snow lepord 10.6.8 and ichat 5.0.3) but i am using a 15 inch but all the updates are the same. I was able to connect and see the video but the audio does not work both on her side of the conversation and mine. I tried many solutions that were provided by past post but nothing seems to work HELP!

Hi,
In about iChat 3 when you looked in the Connection Doctor the Bit Rate did used to appear "Rock Solid" (accept for ISP variances) throughout the chat.
At iChat 5  it became more apparent that iChat is somewhat dynamic depending on the amount of movement and sometime the amount of Audio contained in the stream.
iChat 4 can show the variances from iChat 5 but tends to send in a stable fashion.
The Speeds you quote do seem a little low.
Apple say the minimum for 1-1 chats in Video is a 128kbps Connection (Both Upload and download)
If you tested this speed you would tend to get a figure that was about 80% of that (Some is lost to the test itself and to the ISP maintaining the connection)
This would bring you in about 104kbps which is marginally above Apple's 100kbps lower limit
(if it detects lower than 50kbps (Dial-up Modem speeds) at Video Invite you get an Error message)
The Connection Doctor would show you about 80% of that as the working figure. (It will not grab everything)
In iChat up to iChat 4 the speed iChat "Sees" is controlled by the system Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming setting.
This needs to be set at the 1.5Mbps setting to get the most out of your connection  (Automatic is read as "None" in iChat 3 and limited to 384Kbps in ichat 4)
iChat is also effected by the speed set in iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down.
This is best used with really fast connections (Somewhat working in the other direction to the Quicktime setting).
iChat can buffer small (relative) changes in the speed the ISP is giving you.
If someone has a 10Mbps Upload and yuou have a similar Download (iChat 5 and above) then a 5% variance in the internet speed can be as high as 500kbps
For this reason it can help to Limit the Bandwidth Setting to 500kbps to get underneath any ISP/Internet fluctuations.
What is happening in iChat
The Buffering I have already mentioned
What this does is drop frames to try and keep the picture smooth in presentation
There come a point when the Audio would then be out of sync so this tends to get dropped.
If your Buddy is still sending Audio then the Connection Doctor will still show the green bar for incoming Audio
If it varies from Green through Amber to Red the Internet speed is the most likely cause.
If it stays green then the other end may have Muted their Mic, Change the Mic (input) to something else that does not have the volume high enough in System Preferences > Sound > Input
So....
Check your System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming if you are on Leopard or Lower (It is not there in Snow or higher)
Check the iChat Bandwidth Settings  (Set it to 500kbps anyway)
Get your Buddy to do the same at their end.
Do a speed test at both ends.
http://www.speedtest.net/
(it may pay to try this several times at different periods of the day to see if it varies greatly)
Other stuff
Low or bad lighting at one end can seriously impinge on the quality of the pic being sent.
iChat will in fact drop the pic size to try and get around this.
In The Connection Doctor most Intel Macs will get reported as sending you a pic of 640 X 480 Pics and show the Framerate (Hopefully at 30fps)
Anything lower on both scores may point to Lighting or Speed issues so it is difficult to say without seeing the video.

Im completely at a loss. For the last two weeks I have been getting the following ichat errors:
An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout & You where disconnected by a computer that supports multiple logins.
I can connect to Ichat, add buddies, see there status, but when i try to chat or start a video call i get an error. But every now and then it works with selected people.
I have tried:
-Using a different AIM account
-Changing log in ports
-Deleting preferences out of the library
-Adjusting quicktime & ichat bandwidth settings.
-Using ichat on a different user on my mac
Can someone help me? I rely on Ichat and it was always fine, now it dead!
Thanks guys!

• IChat Video Quality vs. Bandwidth FAQ?

I have done some searching and have come across some video quality threads.
Most of my Video Conferencing is done between my Macbook or iMac 24 across Time Warner cable to another iMac 20. All running OSX 10.4.9.
It appears that the video quality will vary based on the upstream bandwidth availability. In my case I have 600-700kbps pretty consistently. This is pretty decent for a 1 person video conference. Not quite up to the standard I was hoping for but usable.
What is not even usable is doing a multi-person Video conference. In this case two local machines on the same wireless network and one machine across Time Warner cable (we use the same provider). When I bring the second local machine, the conference splits out properly but the video in each widow (other than my preview) is so blurry that it is completely useless.
I would be very curious as to the experience of others attempting to connect across the same service providers network. In this case we are connecting across Time Warner between Florida and Ohio. The performance should be rocking with at least 1MB upstream (I will have to check but I think I have 5MB up).
The other thing that I was wondering is if there is some way to tweak the iChat Video settings to force it into a specific video quality mode (and possible deal with some dropouts).
Sorry for the long post but I am hoping we can begin to compile information on bandwidth requirements and perfomance experienced with various service providers.
Thanks!
Jim

Thanks, I did both tweaks and the really improved the 3 way conference.
My speedtest is below and is on Bright House in Tampa. Note that the best that I achieve watching Connection doctor is in the 700 territors. I do tend to be able to deliver 20fps pretty consistently. But my bandwidth bounces around a lot. I am not a big fan of cable for quality and consistency.

Verizon FIOS is moving into my area and I believe they will offer much better speed than Bright House and certainly more consistency. RF is simply a nightmare to maintain.

• Why can't I access preferences or account settings for iChat

Let me start by saying I'm a newbie. I would like to use iChat. I set up a .mac account, a Google/Gmail account and an AIM account.
However, I cannot seem to log-in or use iChat using any of the accounts. I get to the Account Set Up page, enter the log-in info, get to the "Encrypted Chat" window, but cannot see any "Done" button that iChat says I have to select to start using iChat. Nor can I access any of the iChat account settings or preferences.
It doesn't matter if I'm on my wireless network (linksys WRt54G) or connected via ethernet. My firewall settings in System Preferences is open.
What am I doing wrong?
thanks in advance.

Hi,
Welcome to the    Discussions
I am a bit confused as to what stage you are up to.
I think it is the difference in the words you had used (and where you have used them) compared to how I tend to think about iChat
I would like to use iChat. I set up a .mac account, a Google/Gmail account and an AIM account.
I take this means that you have Registered Screen Names at the required places.
I get to the Account Set Up page, enter the log-in info, get to the "Encrypted Chat" window, but cannot see any "Done" button that iChat says I have to select to start using iChat.
I am therefore assuming this mean you are stuck in the Start Up Screens ?
Start Up Screens
You get a Welcome Screen First
A place to Add ("set up" in my speak) an AIM or Apple Screen name. It has a place to Add your First Name Last name details - which may be pre-filled from the Address Book.
This pic is from iChat 4 but should be the same in iChat 5
You need to use the middle Drop down to select which type of account you are using/setting Up.
The option to Enable Bonjour Chats is the next screen followed by the option to Set Up Jabber (Or Google) IDs
In iChat 5 there are optional items under the Text Fields to set up Server Names if different to the ending of your Jabber ID and the Server Port to use.
This is followed by a Video Snapshot option/Preview of Video Screen.
The Last is the Done Screen which tends to list the Names you are setting up.
If I have summarised correctly this is where you have got to then Open the Folder with the Little House iCon (Hard Drive/Users/(your account)
In here then open the Library one and the Preferences one in there.
Use either List View or CoverFlow (Also a List) an find anything that starts com.apple.ichat..... and ends .plist and drag it to the Trash.
Try setting up just one Name (You can add more in iChat Later).
If that does not work can you click though all the screen without adding any details at all ?
Longer version of this here http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/versions/ichatvers4/howtoStartiChat.html

• Best Practice Bandwidth & Video Settings

Does Adobe have a best practice for bandwidth and video settings for meeting rooms?  Please share .
Many thanks...
Lynn

OK. For live I find it depends on the number of individuals streaming live video. If you are in the 1-5 range, there shouldn't be a big issue for using the highest quality setting for the live video. 5+ I would start bringing it down in quality and ultimately you may need to take it to the lowest quality for a large number of live videos.
For on-demand video, I stick with settings around the following:
FLV
720 X 480
800 kbps
These numbers are just a guide, going above them may lead to performance issues, and going below may improve the experience. In the end it all comes down to what you are willing to trade in quality for bandwidth required to deliver it.
For room bandwidth settings, I generally don't change it from LAN unless I know that my audience will require some bandwidth throttling. Shifting down to DSL/Cable will reduce the quality of everything in the room by limiting how much bandwidth can be used. It's a good feature if you need it, but can be frustrating if you don't.
These are just my thoughts on settings as a user, as I don't work for Adobe. I've not seen any documentation from Adobe about recomendations (just a chart of what bandwidth will be consumed on average by each function in Connect). If anyone else has thoughts or guidelines they have put together, please share them.

• IChat will not audio/video connect after first attempt

Hi all, this is my first time at posting on any discussion site so please excuses my ignorance, and thank you in advance for any help you see fit to give me.
I have had a good look through all the posts here and a good search through the web to find help as well as a 3 hour call to Apple! Still no luck yet, please help!! I come across similar problems but this seem to be a bit different?
I am trying to connect to my family using iChat 4.0. The set up at my end is the same as my family. We both purchased at the same time in December new 24"iMac's 2.8GHz running Leopard 10.5.1. The imacs are connected via ethernet cable to new Apple Airport extremes, the new style ones. in turn the extremes are connected to new M3 X-modems then to our broadband internet connection wall sockets. We both use Zen internet as our ISP. We both have .mac full accounts
We have both used ichat before on our old iMacs/router set up using 10.4 and ichat 3 without any problems, that was via the same ISP and at the same locations.
We have connected to each other using Text without problems and have connected via video chat the first time we used the new set up and also some of the times when we make changes to some settings some where within the ichat or prefs settings, but only the once then it stops working. But it stops there. Most of the time we cannot connect at all apart from text. We have tried many things at both ends on the connection using all the leads I have found in these posts as well as the things Apple told me to do, but no luck.
So far I have tried it with the Leopard firewall off (allowing all incoming connections) and also on with iChat listed as one of the apps. (this was done after the update to 10.5.1 as this update was out before we purchased the macs so it was install from day one once we started up) I have turn off the .mac encryption at both ends and on. I have set the Quicktime stream speed to the '1.5Mbps T1/ Setting' and also set the iChat Bandwidth limit to 1Mbps as well as none and other speeds. Plus other changes on the Airport extreme as instructed by Apple all of which failed and I ended up back with the original setting (after losing all internet access at one point!).
When we try and connect via anything other than text, it starts off by trying to connect then after about 15 secs or so we both get a message at each end of the connection saying.......

(plus the rest of the stuff)....... this means very little to me.
I may have left out some vital information, and if so sorry but just ask and I'll fill it in if it can help solve the problem for us.
If anyone can help with this matter than many thanks in advance.

Hi Ralph,
Thanks for the links. I have had a look at the ADSL Nation web site, and yes I did set my modem up as they state, the DNS server was removed.
Thinking back to when I had just the modem connected straight to the computer without the Airport (as per you suggestion) and iChat worked including the video, it would make me think that the problem lays with the Airport? But by the sounds of your last post the Airport does not have settings to be able to change DoS or SPI or it does not make any difference anyway/ or it Automatic?? Is that what you mean?
I have noticed on other posts people talking about having a list of ports open for iChat. As on your web site as well. However I think your web site is looking towards iChat3, I think? I'm think that iChat 4 is different when it comes to port opening??. Is this something I have to set up on the Airport and if so how? The list of ports go something like this, that I've seen.....
5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298 TCP and 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403 UDP
I just saw this in a new post.( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1331562&tstart=0 )
Are they ports on the Airport or iMac? I was thinking that by adding the iChat to the list on the Firewall that all the ports that need to be open would be opened by Leopard? Or do I need to do this manually as well on the Airport? Does Bonjour have anything to do with this? Is that something I need to look into.
Thanks for the on going help with this one, it seems to be a strange one!

• Poor audio quality in iChat

When I use iSight in Skype it delivers a way better audio quality in comparison with iChat Audio/Video chat. It's not that crisp, more like a poor telephone call. I wonder if I can change it or is it just an iChat nature?
My connection speed is 1 MB.
Straming in Quicktime changed to 1.5 MB
My Output/Input settings in Sound tab seems OK.
I don't use firewall.

Hi Sleeze,
I do not have Skype so I can not judge. Most of the posts I have read seem to suggest iChat Audio is better.
However Skype could have updated their app.
As long as iChat Bandwidth and Quicktime streaming setting in System Preferences are not capping your connection I can not see any other changes you can make. (unless you are "too far" from the camera). If the last is the case it may pay to adjust the volume in System Preferences > Sound >Input tab as this is the master for iChat. I am not sure if it is the same for Skype.
Ralph
