IChat behaves as if I've never used it before, then doesn't start up.

Whwnever I start iChat 3.1 on my G5 Dual 2 running OS X 10.4.3, the app behaves as if I've never used it before. I have to go throught the entire start-up procedure, which wouldn't be all that bad, but when it's finished with all the info screens, I get a spinning beach ball for several minutes, no buddy list, and an error message when I click on the "window" menu item that says
iChat Internal Error!
NSInternalInconsistencyException:
Invalid parameter not satisfying: aString != nil
and when I click on "continue" the menu drops down. If I select "buddy list" I get the same error message. I have to force quit every time and the choices I made in the set-up procedure don't "take."
I see in other posts that people are having trouble once iChat starts, but I can't even get that far.
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Lloyd Lathrop

OK, I think I might have something. I got through the sign-in screens and opened the preferences. When I clicked on the "accounts" tab, there is something that looks like an atom in the "accounts" window on the left, but where it says "Display Name" in the center, my name is there. If I click on the "open" button by "My Address Book Card," nothing happens. I tried to add another account using the same info that should be already there, and I get an error message saying that it is an invalid screen name, but it IS my AIM name. So I tried to set up a new account using another AIM account I have, and it gave me the same error message (Invalid Screen Name). Also, I can click on all the tabs EXCEPT the "messages" one. When I click on that one, I get the error message
"iChat Internal Error!
NSInternalInconsistencyException:
Invalid parameter not satisfying: service!=nil"
My guess is that iChat is not able to talk with Address Book, but I don't know what to do about it. I'm sure there's more going on than that, but I'm lost now.
Thanks,
Lloyd

The guy at the Genius Bar has told you absolute and utter rubbish.  It is true that Apple has stopped supporting iWeb, but it definitely DOES NOT mean that your website will stop working any time soon.
They should know that iWeb is an application on your Mac and as long as it is compatible with your OS - it works in Snow Leopard and Lion and will be compatible with the new Mountain Lion out this Summer, then you can still use it to build and maintain websites.
As long as your are not publishing your site to MobileMe, then you are okay - if you are publishing to a local folder and then uploading to another host that is fine and your site will not be going anywhere in a hurry.
You don't need to change software unless you really want to.

    Simply restore from your backup.
You do have Time Machine running, yes?
Or you use some other backup program?

  • NEVER USED IT BEFORE..... DOING A SIMPLE PHOTO MONTAGE

I've never used Motion before, I usually use iphoto to do a photo slideshow, but find that I really do not have the controll I'd like. Is Motion something that I could do this with? Is it too complicated for me, or should I just stick with iphoto?
I've been reading the manual, but am clueless.... really cluelesss about the terminology.... There is so much info, that I am confused. I just don't know how to begin. All I really need to do is Import 350 photos, and give them the "Ken Burns" effect. I'd like to controll which way the photos glide across the display.
Thank you for your help in advance!

Nothing's too complicated if you give it the right amount of time and effort. In all seriousness, Motion is actually a bit over-powered for what you want to achieve. It will give you the tools to do so much more than what you describe, but it's a professional tool, so it's not going to hold your hand.
But if you're interested, it's certainly learnable. The biggest hurdle is that you're going to have to do it all by hand. Motion will give you extremely fined grained control over the properties and movements of your image, but it will take time to achieve. Look into using Behaviors under the Library. These are preprogramed animations that can be quickly applied to an object. You should also get a solid understanding of how keyframes work.
I would advise you stick to the manual, as well as online tutorials. You're going to get a lot of information you might not think you need, but it's all part of the package. Here's page with links to tutorials:

Good luck. If you have any more questions, post back with specifics. We'll try not to be too rude (all my friends from Bethlehem would be angry if I was rude).

Have you just entered or changed your credit card details on your iTunes account ? If so then it's probably a holding charge that is made to check that the card is valid and active, and it should disappear off the card within a few days : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3702

Doesn't sound like any hard drive failure to me - more a Finder preference.
Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> Hard disks
The startup disk is sometimes treated differently from other disks (such as external and network disks) and I'm guessing this is a simple preference setting, although I might be wrong.

  • How do I prepare artwork for a printer (2 PMS colours)? Never used Illustrator before - lost!

I'm preparing artwork for a DLX sized envelope. The printer (CMYKonline) only offers 1 or 2 colour printing for this size envelope, not full colour printing. I have never used Pantone colours before, and I downloaded a trial copy of Adobe Illustrator.
I have the logo prepared as a print-ready PDF using Pantone 1788U for the red. (It's a very simple image, using no other colour save white.)
I inserted the image using Place (figured that one out); I typed in the text (black) and a solid line using Pantone 1788U again.
But how on earth do I make this artwork ready for the printer as specified?
Any help gratefully accepted - I am completely at a loss, not having used anything similar to Illustrator before.

Let me see if I can help:
    Using a CMYKOnline template?
[I like CMYKOnline's readymade template, and recommend this approach for your requirement that seems urgent and immediate]
Download the Illustrator template from CMYKOnline [I think the one you specified (DLX Envelope, plain or with a window) can be found at: http://www.cmykonline.com.au/Home/CustomersResources/GuidelineTemplates/EnvelopeTemplates/ tabid/278/Default.aspx]
Add/place/create the artwork/text (I think you already have this ready, great!)
Have a look at their requirements and tips [http://www.cmykonline.com.au/CustomersResources/tabid/124/default.aspx]
Save this file and send it across to CMYKOnline (They accept .eps files! You're nearly there! )
Stay in touch with your printer, they might have questions or need more information about your requirement.

I am unable to access settings or passcode locks or even self destruct which is looking quite appealing.

  • I've got iPhone 5 from my aunt, i can use it before, then i make some mistake. now, i can't activation my iPhone. i don't know if this iPhone still linked with other Apple ID, my aunt didn't know about that. please help me :(

my iPhone 5 couldn't activation (i can use it before, but i make some mistake), help me how to activation my iPhone again, i don't know who is first hand my iPhone 5

If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for a previous owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. This is a security feature that prevents thieves from setting up and using a stolen or lost iPad or iPhone. You have no alternative. You must contact the previous owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the previous owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. You will never be able to activate the device and no one can help you do it.

  • My iTunes just started like I've never used it before clearing all 7000 songs and playlists. My ipod said it's synced to a different iTunes?? HELP!!

Someone please help!! I just started my computer and opened iTunes and it looks like a brand new iTunes that's never been used before. All of my 7000 songs and all playlists are gone. When I tried to sync my iPod it says it's synced to a different iTunes. What do I do??

I have a similar problem - transferred from an older iPad to a newer one.
Once over the hurdle of the backup being encrypted with a password that was never set, the new iPad thinks it is synced with a library on another computer that will not be up to date (it was an old backup made on the original device).
    Some of the backup information has not fully restored the new iPad to the same state as the old one - if I connect and sync to the computer with the older library, will this;
    a) erase any data - i.e. should I not automatically sync?
    b) will it recover the missing data - or is it 'lost'?
    c) will it always require synching to this library - I intend for the device to be synched with another PC because it is faster and more convenient - this is the one where the backup and restore has been carried out rather than waiting for an iCloud sync.
The old iPad has already been reset - will this process have to be completed from scratch again? i.e. is there a way of divorcing the old iPad from it's old library then backing up and getting a full transfer.

  • Never used iCal before and it is bewlidering to me.

    Hi,
I am trying to set up iCal so that I can remember to pay my bills by a specific date. I have read the help files but am still not quite getting it. What is the best entry to use for something like that? I thought it was something like a to do list but am not sure.
I want to have an alarm go off and also have a check box for when it is completed. Can someone help walk me through an entry or point to me to something that is more straight forward than the help files. They are VERY ambiguous and so leave me flustered.
    Thank you very much.

Could this work? Or am I not understanding your problem?
You can open iCal & create a "Bills" calendar.
Go to the date your bill is due, or a period of time before, and double click to create an entry.
When the event info window opens up, give the event a name, i.e., Phone due by 15th, or something that works.
You can click "all-day" so it doesn't show appointment times.
Under "repeat" click the appropriate - every month, every year, whatever.
Then you can set an alarm or multiple alarms. You can create a message alarm, which will open on your computer, and/or an email alarm to send to yourself.
There's no check box for the calendar, so when I've paid that bill, I edit the event name to add "XX" to it so I know by looking at the calendar it's been done. When you edit a repeating event it will ask if you want to edit just the one occurrence or all, so you just edit the current.
iCal to-do's are pretty useless as far as I'm concerned.

  • Never used iPod before

I have Mac OS X Leopard. I have an unused new iPod Shuffle 512 MB from 2005.
Received as a gift & forgot about it. I didn't have a Mac back then. I want to try it out to see if I actually use it. If so, I'll probably buy a much better new one. It comes with a software CD which I'm sure is very outdated.
Does OS X already have the needed software pre-installed? I do have iTunes installed.
I want to copy CDs that I own & select songs from them to make up my song library rather than join iTunes & buy from the store.
So, do I require additional software or is Leopard “ready for iPod?”
Also, will this 512MB (1st generation?) iPod have the ability to connect directly to my home stereo (with some adapter) and also to my car stereo?
Is the only difference between the current model iPod Shuffle 1 GB simply the amount of memory?
I hate to install the 2005 CD software if it is not needed. I also don't want to start with this if the 2005 512 MB version is incompatible in some way & will not give me a fair trial of iPod.
    Thanks for any help,
    Steve

Your first problem will be to get it charged sufficiently... after sitting
for several years the battery will be depleted and may not hold a charge. Plug it into a USB port on the back of your iMac and see what happens. It may take a LONG ( !5 or more hours) time to show symptom of being charged (green LED).

IF you have iTunes, you're all set.

You do NOT need to buy any music from iTunes Music Store.
So, do I require additional software or is Leopard “ready for iPod?”
No, and, since you have iTunes already, YES.
Also, will this 512MB (1st generation?) iPod have the ability to connect directly to my home stereo (with some adapter) and also to my car stereo?
    Yes...
Is the only difference between the current model iPod Shuffle 1 GB simply the amount of memory?
Physical size and configuration as well as storage. Some believe that the audio output of the original shuffle is "better" than the later version.

CD not needed... but you may encounter difficulty getting it to stay charged.
