IChat being inconsistent!

I just got a MacBook, and I've been using iChat, but recently when I'm at home it logs on and off rapidly until it says that i have tried to log in to many times. It works in other places and seems to be the only program being affected.
Please help!

OK, I think something awful is happening with this mac. When I left my mother's place yesterday, I deleted iChat outright, and anything related to iChat until I can upgrade her machine to 10.4. If I need to use iChat while I'm there, I can drag the laptop over and use it for the time being, it probably won't be more than a few days.
This morning, I'm using iChat and get a message that iChat has logged in as me from somewhere else. I go over to my mother's place and look on her G4 - sure enough she's connected to the 'net, iChat has come back , it's launched, and it's logged in as me. I have no idea where iChat is re-coming from, this is insane. Still, I wish I understood the insanity before having to nuke/reinstall.

  • IChat SIP inconsistancy

I support a Mac User who telecommutes to our office. He iChats to a Mac Pro that sits in his cubicle. This has worked fine for years, but now has stopped. The SIP connection fails now. No firewall changes have occured, network changes etc. To make it more odd, I can connect to his cubical iChat session from my house, and include him, but he cannot directly connect? I have gone through all the firewall settings and everything is still setup and open. Any suggestions?

  • Does ichat have an automatic logout function for being inactive

I'm doing a project for my A+ certification class and i dont know if mac ichat will time out my video chat for inactivity i am running a snow leoperd OS
    Thank you for your time,

    Hi,
In the General Section of the iChat Preferences there is a setting that will set the Status of iChat to Away if you become Idle.  ("Set my Status to Away after the computer is inactive")
Idle is the time without any keyboard or mouse (User Input) to the computer.
iChat will show you as Idle after 10 minutes (although there are ways to change this).
So this leaves iChat being in one of 4 states:-
Available and Active.  (Green blob next you your name on other people's Buddy lists)
Available but Idle.  (Amber Blob next to Name)
Away but Active on the computer  (Red Blob next to your Name)
Away and Idle.  (Not shown in iChat Buddy Lists unless you mouse over the Buddy's name - Other apps do differentiate this.)
As  a Video chat could be a long time (several hours) without you making any keyboard input so the Idle time does not apply during an Video or Audio Chat.
I have never come across a Video time out period.
Technically they last until one end or the other actually ends the chat or some other external factor causes the chat to end.

  • Attempting to use Clearwire for iChat A/V

Clearwire is a new wireless ISP. We are attempting to use the service to hold audio and video chats. All of our iSights work fine inside and outside or WAN, I even telecommute using iSight from home. We are testing the Clearwire service for portable data connectivity in out remote television production truck. Clearwire allows us to use the test chat, but not audio or video. What ports need to be opened on the Clearwire system for video and audio to work?
    Thank you,
    Shawn Bockoven
    METV EBS Station Manager

    Hi Shawn,
iChat uses these ports an these Protocols.
    TCP
    5190 for AIM Login
    5298 for Bonjour
    5220, 5222, 5223 for Jabber stuff
    UDP
5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403 for AIM (Mac to Mac Jabber A/V chats will also use some of these).
    5297, 5298, 5353 for Bonjour.
See table here. Scroll down just below the planes.
Your main problem is that ClearWire is reported to block port 5060 and prevents iChat being used. They seem reluctant to anything about this.
It may be because they offer a VoIP phone service. Unblocking this port would allow Users to purchase other equipment/services.

  • Com.apple.ichat files missing

My iChat hasn't been opening. I've been trying to follow the advice posted by other users and putting the /Users/macbookprompls/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist file in the trash. It worked a couple months ago, but this morning, when my iChat failed to open, I tried to use the same method and none of the com.apple.iChat files were in either my Preferences folder or the trash.
    Help?

You didn't try using "macbookprompls" when typing a command in Terminal.app to locate these plist files, did you? "macbookprompls" was the original poster's screen name, which I used by example to imply that (s)he needed to use his(her) short user name. So, if you were, you should be opening up, in the Finder, your user home account's Library's Preferences folder. There should be a several files in there whose names begin with "com.apple.iChat" and end with ".plist" and if you quit iChat and trash all of those files and restart iChat, it will look like a "first time ever" launch of iChat on your computer. Then you should be able to recreate any iChat, Jabber, and/or Bonjour accounts with your ichat, jabber, and/or bonjour screen names, and all should be well. Things like AIM buddy lists are maintained on AIM servers, so you won't lose those by deleting these plist files.
If that is of no help to you, I think that with the Leopard installer DVD, you can do custom reinstallations of a limited number of Apple OEM applications, iChat being one of them. My installer DVD is not conveniently nearby for me to check, but that was the case with Tiger. Some info for custom reinstalls in Tiger can be found here. I can't find an equivalent knowledgebase article for Leopard, though. In any event, if iChat is one of the apps that the optional installs package on the Leopard installer DVD supports, you could try a reinstallation of iChat from the optional installs package on the Leopard installer DVD.
However, before going down the optional installs route (or maybe after, too), if you launch iChat from the command line with error logging, and post the log results here, the gurus here in this forum could help you troubleshoot further. To launch iChat from the command line, start up Terminal.app (in /Applications/Utilities) and type
    /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7⏎
and copy and paste the resulting text displayed in the Terminal window back into a follow-up post here, if iChat still refuses to launch for you.

  • Inconsistent lock button issues?

  • Messages, Facetime, iChat and Video Conferencing

We are using 10.7 and a colleague is using 10.8.  Facetime only seems to allow two people to video conference.  ichat allows at least four.  I am told in Messages in 10.8 beta, selecting video opens Facetime (with only two video users.)
    1)  With 10.8, is there going to be the capability for more than two to video conference?
    2)  Is iChat being replaced by Messages?

    Hi,
If you had Buddy list with iChat before you had Messages then it will do the same Video Chats iChat did.
For Mac to Mac (AIM to AIM or Jabber to Jabber) this can be up to 4 people including yourself.
At the Text Chat Level an "Account" is added to the list in Messages menu > Preferences Accounts.
    This uses an Apple ID.
If you open New Messages then you can select Contacts (Address Book List) and text chat to them
    Uploaded with Skitch!
Those on iPhone (Phone Numbers or Apple IDs) and iPads (generally Apple IDs) and certain Touches can then be iMessaged.
(As the pic says you can also access the Buddies in the iChat style Buddy lists (rather than display the Buddy lists) and Text chat to them.
At the next stage, as it were, the Blue Icon has become a Video icon.
For iMessages contacts this starts up FaceTime.
    Uploaded with Skitch!
FaceTime is the Video Chat option in iOS 5 devices and is limited by the processors on iOS devices and only does 1-1 chats.
There is however Version on your Mac in Lion so that you can either do 1-1 contact with other Macs and/or Video chats to Phones and iPads.
    So...
Your Mac with Messages and the fomer iChat Buddy Lists can do up to 4 way Video chats with the Buddies in those Lists - with the proviso that they are logged in to the same Service.
Messages also adds in Texting iMessages to your Address  Book Contacts using either iPhone Numbers (only iPhones - not other phones) or their Apple ID  (does include some iPads that also have SIM cards)
These Contacts can be FaceTimed which can be activated from within Messages
    Uploaded with Skitch!

  • Why does iChat video/audio chat don't work since 10.7.3

Yesterday I updated my Mac to Lion 10.7.3.
Now I can't have video/audio chat with my buddies anymore.
Any suggestions what might it be?
All my buddies are on the same jabber server and two days ago it work seamlessly.

    Hi,
This is about iChat being cut off at th router due to some sort of Protection feature.
Most likley this is DoS (Denial of Service)
This is threshold based and will have changed from SNow Leopard as iChat can not use  HD camera if the computer has one (meaning more pixels per frame and therfore more data being sent.)
The Protection then cuts the one port it thinks is getting too much data.
It may be before you did not reach the Threshold but now you do.
(could be that the Buddy has just got a faster Service).
In iChat > Preferences > Video Section on both computer set the Bandwidth to 500kbps.
This should keep it below the threshold.
Alternativley turn the feature off in the router's set up pages.
The Log (Open the Send to Apple Pop up and see the whole log) may well list that Pings are not being sent
This could be that the call gets cut off before this or that the router is Blocking Pings.
If you need to copy the log and post the first two sections here   (that is in fact all of It except the bit below the Line "Binary Images for iChat")

  • Communications Error on Video iChat

I am unable to connect with one son via Video iChat but able to connect with another son. I discussed this problem with the local Apple Store and they think it is an ISP problem. The one I am able to connect with; we both have Runner. The one with the connection problem, he has AT&T and I have Roadrunner; the Apple Store said I can try to " decrypt ", not sure what he meant. He also said I have to call AT&T to find out what port they use. Appreciate any help.

    Hi,
There are two main problem ISPs in the States that do Data shaping in an effort to stop or control Peer-to-Peer file sharing.
They are Comcast and Road Runner.
The Peer-To-Peer stuff they are aiming at are the BitTorrent types where music and Video files are shared between many users at the same time.
However 1-1 Video contact and even 3 and 4 way Video chats are between those people only (Peer-to-Peer) and suffer the same fate.
The one way that seems to work best to get around this is to limit the speed at which iChat works.
iChat reads the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming setting.
In Tiger ichat 3 reads the Automatic setting as 0kbps
In Leopard it is read as 384k.
384 K is the minimum Upload speed at which iChat will do 4 way Video chats.
Setting the Quickitme Setting to 1.5kbps removes this cap at this point.
iChat needs to be restarted if it is Changed to "See" the new speed.
At this point the default Setting in iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down should still read NONE.
This is the Optimum setting for most people.
In the case of Comcast and Road Runner it seems that setting the Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps stops iChat being seen as "too grabby" of what Internet bandwidth you have. (i.e. iChat is now set to use a 1/3 of the internet Speed set in Quickitme and that is likely to be lower than your purchased service speed as well.)
iChat, if you have a paid for @mac.com name at both ends can Encrypt the chats.
It would appear that the "Guy" was suggesting that you use it in an Un-encrypted way.
AT&T were or are a telephone company.
Some Telcom companies have been worried about VoIP apps and devices making use of Internet connections to make long distance calls.
Apple declared iChat a VoIP app and use the SIP Protocols that are an International Standard.
(VoIP = Voice over Internet = IP Phones. SIP = Session Initiation Protocols used to Make VoIP connections).
iChat 3 does SIP on port 5060
VoIP devices and apps use SIP on port 5060 (or one of the SIP Ports (5060-5063) )
Some telecoms/ISPs block port 5060-5063 in an attempt to sell their Own VoIP service.
It is unclear from the AT&T pages I tries to look at about what they actually offer in Internet Service and Phone services as the first page you go to want to know where you live and I live outside their areas.
Also devices like Vonage Adaptors that are In line between computers and Modems can cause similar problems.
So the "guy" at the store may have been on about this issue.
Another issue is the way certain modems and routers do NAT.
NAT (Network Address Translation) has become an ubiquitous name for all methods of sharing a Public IP over a Private LAN
    See here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Networkaddresstranslation
This can mean that how your end does NAT and how your Son's end does NAT may not "play nicely" together.
If either of you is using Port Forwarding to open the ports for iChat and has UPnP that may help the situation.
    Certain Buddy issues
Tell us what modems and routers are in use at each end and how they are set up to open ports.

  • My iChat suddenly stopped working...help!

I have not changed any passwords or settings and my iChat has always worked with gmail no problem.  After a few minutes of attempting to connect, iChat says "could not connect to host google.talk.com".  My computer is fully updated.  I run on Mac OS X 10.5.8.  My iChat is version 4.0.9.  Also, I attempt to connect to Google Talk but then it says "Jabber could not connect".  Do I need to make  Jabber Account?

    Hi,
If you have set up Google Talk in iChat then you have created a Jabber Account (and the message you are getting relates to that)
Google use Google Mail IDs with Talk enabled on their Account Settings and run this on a Jabber server to run their service.
Once you have a valid ID several apps can use it with iChat being one of those.
GO to the iChat Menu > Preference > Accounts
In your Google Account (highlight it) in the Server Settings it should read the server as being talk.google.com (Your Alert Messages seems to suggest it is)
The Port should be 5223 and SSL should be ON (turning the SSL Off will get the ort to change to 5222)
You can try this  (Non SSL)
Also check the Chat option when you Log in to Google Mail Web page (It may be that their server for Chat is down)
If it still will not log in then whilst it is logged out change the port to 443 and Enable SSL again.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Starting up iChat for the First time should have got you the Start Up Screens.
This would normally ask you to enter an AIM (with a drop down Option for Apple @mac.com or @me.com names) valid Screen Name.
It also has spaces for your Real Name (Which may be pre-filled with your Address Book My Card entry details).
You can click through this screen (Manage without an AIM name).
There is a further Screen to enter a Jabber or Googlemail ID (GoogleMail IDs work with GoogleTalk and th Google Talk server is a Jabber server)
The Next screen Allows you to Enable Bonjour.
This will let you find other Macs on the Network (Local Area) if they have iChat Bonjour Option Enabled.
They will appear in a Bonjour titled Buddy List as their Address Book Entry.
    Alternatives.
You can click through all the Screens and then set up iChat by going to the App Menu > Preferences > Accounts
Bonjour can be Enables/Disabled here and (other) Screen Names added.
At this point if you clicked through the Start Up Screens and Bonjour is Not Enabled then there will be no Buddy List to Display and apart from iChat being listed as the Current Front App it will look inactive.
    Notes.
iChat can remember where a window was left the last time it was started up.
The Red Button/blob at the top of any iChat windows does not close the App
The ones on Text Chats or Video/Audio chats close the Chat only.
The ones on the Buddy Lists can "Hide" the Buddy List but do Not log you out.
To Re-display a window in this state you should go to the Window Menu and click on the Buddy List name (or use the Keystrokes listed)
At this point your posts tells us nothing about the processes or options you used listed above.
It is difficult to say if iChat was acting properly or not.
As you reinstalled and have not said what Level the Install Disk is Defcom has replied with the more Pressing problem now.
At 10.5.8 iChat has received several Updates that came as part of the OS Updates that you seem to have Installed.
If you use Software Update then these would have been Incremental from the Install Disk Level (either the 10.5 base Level or I think 10.5.5 with some new machines).
So you will need to do the COMBO Update Defcom has suggested.
For iChat at this point it should list itself as Version 4.0.8
There is a further issue in that OS 10.5.8 itself has received some major-ish updates via Security Updates to a sort of 10.5.8+ level.
In the process iChat reports in some places it is Version 4.0.9
Once you have done the basic COMBO Update can you go to the Apple Menu > About this Mac and report what Build number it lists (Click the Line that reads 10.5.8)
Do you use Time Machine ?
As this may be an easier way of getting a correct version iChat back on your Mac.
    Go to the Application Folder
Click the Time Machine icon in the DOCK
Go back in time on the right to before the period when you deleted iChat and highlight it.
    Click Restore.
Can you confirm that in the Applications Folder if you Highlight iChat and do a Get Info (Finder > File Menu > Get Info or the Keystrokes it lists) that iChat is at Version 4.0.8 as listed here ?
Can you confirm that if you highlight iChat in the Applications Folder and do a Quick Look that it reports it is version 4.0.9 and version 4.0.8 ?
If you now Start iChat and go to the iChat Menu > About iChat it should report it is at Version 4.0.9
If it does not we will have to point you to the Security Updates to manually Install them again. (Software Update keeps Receipts and will not find them again)
Can you also confirm how you set up iChat ? (in terms of Screen Names or Bonjour)
Sorry to go on so much.

  • IChat AV software?

hey, i was just wondering how I could get iChat AV reinstalled on my iBook G4. i had some problems with it earlier and this resulted in iChat being erased from my system. I want to buy an iSight, but it requires iChat. Someone please help.
    Thanks, Chase

    Hi Chase,
It's already in the Mac OS disks that came with your iBook or on the Tiger DVD. You'll need a utility called Pacifist though to extract the application. You can get it from here:
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
Once extracted and installed you can then run Software Update to upgrade iChat to the latest version.

  • Characteristic Relationship Challenges in IP

    All,
I'm having a bit of a problem with characteristic relationships in IP.
We have a simple planning cube with no data.  It has the characteristics 0CALMONTH, 0MATERIAL, 0SALESORG, 0SALES_GRP, 0SALES_OFFICE, and 0PAYER.  We want to build a query which allows us to plan on specifically designated valid combinations of 0SALESORG, 0SALES_GRP, 0SALES_OFFICE, and 0PAYER.  However, instead of displaying only the valid combinations we desire, things seem to be showing up as the Cartesian Product of the characteristics.
We thought we could accomplish this through a characteristic relationship and we tried establishing one (first by creating a DSO and then by creating a hierarchy).  But all combinations seem to yield only one of the following results:
*Only the first level of the hierarchy
    *The Cartesian product
*The 2nd level of the hierarchy (and only the 2nd level) but unfortunately containing ALL options in master data
Has anyone here ever managed to do in IP what I'm trying to do (display only certain valid combinations of characteristics)?  If so can you give me a step by step outline of how you did it?
According to SAP hosting we have all of the latest Service Packs.

All, the issue is partially corrected.  Instead of fighting with hierarchies, I stepped back and re-attacked this problem by creating a characteristic relationship based on a DSO.  (I had tried this initially but it failed for a reason I will explain below.)
We do top-down planning and so I need these valid combinations at each level of granularity.  I created a DSO with the key 0SALESORG, 0SALES_GRP, 0SALES_OFFICE, 0PAYER, and populated it with the valid combinations.  However, when I tried to create the characteristic relationship it does not allow me to select 0PAYER as a "Source Characteristic".  This results the relationship being inconsistent.
So then I created a DSO with the key 0SALESORG, 0SALES_GRP, 0SALES_OFFICE, and populated the valid combinations.  It worked perfectly for my query at that level of granularity but not for the higher level of simply 0SALESORG and 0SALES_GRP and so I found myself creating another DSO and characteristic relationship to handle that level.
Now I have the valid combinations down to a certain level of granularity displaying properly, but not all the way to the 0PAYER level.  I'm not sure why it has a problem aside from perhaps the fact that 0PAYER is a reference char based on 0CUSTOMER.  Does anyone know why it has this problem with 0PAYER?
Additionally I have found that I can no longer execute a simple copy function on my cube because it "cannot find reference data for characteristic combination" in an insistance when I planned on a characteristic with a blank value.

  • Error while raising the shopping cart.

    Hi experts,
Can any one tell me, I get an error message at the time of raising a SC,
    The error is
Partner 22452 not found with with partner function type goods recipent.
Account 54102022 requires an assignment to an CO object
No address found for partner type goods recipient.
I have checked users consistency he is fine, I checked all the attributes they were fine.
So where could be problem? can any one suggest?
    Best Regards,
    Sairam

    Hi Sai,
The issue below is a perfect example of the BP being insconsistent or his Company BP being inconsistent. what version of SRM?? If you are on SRM 4.0, you can use the repairl of level 2 feature and fix this issue.
<b>Partner 22452 not found with with partner function type goods recipent.</b>
The BP you logged in with should have an employee role in BP. This is different from the regular role in PFCG. I am poiting at the Role in BP from transaction BP.
<b>Account 54102022 requires an assignment to an CO object</b>
This is a data error. You need to populate valid account assignment in the account assignment tab.
<b>No address found for partner type goods recipient.</b>
Same as the first error. Your BP is corrupted.
    Hope this helps !
Pls assign points for usefull answers !

  • Are you having problems with Windows XP Pro and Airport Utility Updates?

I was having problems with my wireless laptop setting up my Bonjour Printer. I checked to make sure I had downloaded the latest updates to Airport Utility and Bonjour. Check. After doing this I noticed I couldn't see my Airport Extreme through the Airport Utility. After much frustration and bringing my entire network crashing down around me, I got help from a knowledgeable guy from Cox Cable in San Diego. He helped me get my trusty iMac Power PC online. It saw my Airport Extreme but no answers were forthcoming in any forums about my XP issues. Here is what finally solved my problem. I uninstalled all Airport Utility and Bonjour Programs. I then went back to Airport Utility 5.3.1 for Windows. It installs Bonjour Printer services with this download. Everything is working perfectly again. I have my Canon Pixma MP500 connected to the USB port on my AEBS and Bonjour walked right through the setup process. I suggest that if this works for you, turn off all Airport Utility and AEBS firmware updates until you see that whatever issue Apple created with these updates gets fixed.

    Well... it worked! :D
I'm pretty sure the extra 512 memory stick was the problem, that would explain why it was being inconsistent with its type of failures before. I'm going to reinstall it later and run memtest86 and try and see if i can get it to work at all somehow without causing problems, cuz 1.5 was already low enough...
DryHeat, yeah it was with SP2 but I got it installed now so no worries
    Thanks a lot!
