Ichat buddies

Hi all. I've had my mac for a few years and a friend of mine has recently bought a new mac and asked whether we could chat on ichat. I set it up last night with my mobile me account, however i can not seem to add him to my buddy list. I've tried to add in the AIM buddy list window and using buddies> add buddy and nothing happens. He says that he has added me. I don't know whether this is relevant but also seem to have acquired two apple ID. One that i set up originally and one that seems to have been set up accidently when i was setting up ichat and is related to the mobile me account. Can anyone lead me through this? Ta

Hi,
iChat if you have an AIM, @Mac.com or @me.com ID will login into the AIM Servers (login.oscar.aol.com)
So as long as you and your Buddy have a AIM based name it will work.
iChat can also Login to Jabber Servers.
This includes GoogleTalk (If you allow Talk in your account settings at Google).
Most public Jabber Servers are interconnected so that you can chat with Buddies on other Jabber servers. (Jabber to Jabber or Googletalk and vice versa)
You cannot Chat Jabber to AIM Buddies or AIM to Jabber Buddies (In this Line AIM means any ID that Logs into AIM)
There can be several reasons why someone appears Offline.
1) they are Off Line
2) they have set themselves to Invisible
3) You have their Buddy Screen Name wrong in some way (Misspelt or added as the "Wrong" type.
4) You or they are Blocking or not allowing each other
Re 4)
If you misspell a name the server does not check if it is a Valid name
If they do not add you to the Buddy List and use Allow Buddy List only then you will not see them as On line (sort of Like Invisible)
raplhjohnsr
[email protected] and
[email protected] are in fact three separate Buddies as far as the AIM Servers are conerned
I sometimes regard 3) as a) and b) options a = misspellings b = wrong type.
5) Is the Buddy doing 3) and 4) together. (they add you but either misspell or add you as AIM when it should be @mac.com for example - the the 4) bit does not allow you to see them as On-line)
If they can see you as On line then they should start a Text Chat
When you get this and open it, go to the Buddies Menu and use the Add option; which will list their Screen name. (delete any misspelt or other mistake from their Address Book entry as well as iChat)

why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies!!!

    HI,
    Apple did not erase iChat.
Messages in Mountain Lion is iChat +
The plus bit is the fact you can iMessage iOS devices.
All the other features that were in iChat are still there.
If you upgraded Lion to get to Mountain Lion then in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you probably list all the iChat Accounts (Screen Names and IDs).
You may need to enable them for Messages.
They should also show up in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts
Once those accounts (AIM and Jabber) are Enabled they can be viewed in a Combined Buddy List
Windows Menu > Buddies (Or using CMD + 1 Keystrokes)
In the General Section of the Preferences you can Unlink these Buddy lists.
The Green icons or highlight a Buddy and then using the Buddies Menu or the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy list can be used the same way to start Video or Audio Only chats.
The iMessage "Account" is only for texting iOS devices or other people using their Apple ID on a Mac in Messages.
It is an account "in addition to" rather than "taking over from" the services that iChat can join.

my buddies on ichat say that im offline when on my computer im online

    Hi,
    Which iChat Buddies ?
    AIM ones ?
    Jabber ones ?
AIM one can be the result of your Privacy Settings (iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Privacy tab on an AIM Account)
You can also set an AIM account to Invisible
In iChat 6 you can link the Buddy Lists into one and sometimes one Buddy list will override others (And can be set to do so)
If you are using a Combined Buddy List I would unlink them and check all the Status Settings
Yahoo accounts overriding overs would be my favourite as this can do Invisible as well.

  • Why can't I see any of my ichat buddies when I log on?

When I log onto ichat, I cant see any of my buddies or add anyone to my list. My buddy list is just blank, and sometimes theres one name on there and when I add a buddy that name starts flashing but then nothing happens. However, I can hear the buddies when they log on or off. I tried quitting, restarting, changing ports, but nothing works. I think this happened after I created a new account and copied and pasted my whole buddy list into the "Add Buddy" option. Does anyone know how to fix my problem?
Edit: I found all my buddy names in my address book in one card. I remember saving my buddies into my address book and trying to transfer them to my other account through the address book. Now my ichat list is blank, but all my buddies are saved in one card in my address book. Also, that one buddy that appears on my ichat, when I put the cursor over the name, all my buddies appear in the info bubble. I don't know if this helps....

    Hi,
You will need to sort out that Address Book Issue.
If you know "where" or who the Screen Names belong to I would delete the Names from the Card.
The Screen Names are always held on the server  no matter whether you login to AIM or to a Jabber server.
Then you can work though and add the right Screen Name to the right Address Card.
Part of this also sounds like you have tried Parental Controls on your Mac User Account (Or used your current iChat details in a Test Mac User Account)

  • Ichat buddies are grey when they are online

I have set up my daughter with a minimac. they have a netgear WPN824 wireless router connected to a comcast modem. We have set up and tested Skype video chats and they work fine. But iChat (version 5) shows all buddies offline and grey even when we know one is online (and that person reports that we show 'offline' and grey on her buddy list). Our status is online and available. We are running SL 10.6.1. Normal internet connectivity is fine.
Could this be a port setting issue for iChat?

AS indicated in my first post in this thread you and she have to check the Security setting in iChat first.
They are found in iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts and it is a tab on the right.
There are several Allow and Block settings.
If the name you have for her is not blocked and the names she has for the rest of you are not Blocked then you have to check if the Names are "right".
In iChat 4 (Leopard) you can have one of several type of names that can Log in to the AIM servers. These can be an AIM one or one of the Apple ones.
You have to choose how you enter the names to make it work.
Your Buddies also have to be entered as the Correct "type" as you add them. You have to select either AIM, @Mac.com or MobileMe for @me.com names. Getting this bit "wrong" will make the Buddy appear as if they are Off Line (Greyed out).
In Snow Leopard/iChat 5 they have made in simpler in adding Buddies by just entering the whole Buddy name even if it as an @mac or @me.com suffix.
So check the name is spelt correctly.
If Leopard that the Screen Name is entered as the Correct type.
(it can be complicated if she has Allow Buddy List Only and she has your names "wrong")
Most likely though she has Internet Sharing ON or has the Firewall set to Allow Essentials Only in Leopard which will block iChat (Use Allow All or Allow Specifics)

  • My iChat buddies dont show up and also having login problems.

I am having two problems with my ichat. My buddies dont sign online and I also experience the login problem where it opens and collapses many times and says that I have tried to logon too many times. Please help. I have searched this message board and thus far nothing that I have found has worked

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
    Log back in again.

  • My ichat buddies always appear offline when i know they are online and I appear offline to them

A couple months ago my ichat was working fine. Then all of a sudden all my buddies appeared offline when I knew for a fact they were online and I appeared offline to them as well. The only solution I have found is to delete each buddy and re-add them again and they magically show up online but after a while, like a couple days, they all appear offline again. I changed the port to 443 and deleted and re-added my jabber account and deleted the ichat.plist but nothing works.
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hi,
This could be down to the priority that each account and each login can have.
In Messages you can set the Priority that the app (and that account has)
The Earlier iChat apps did not have this setting despite it actually using a Priority.
The iChat versions is set to 25.
This is the same Priority as the web mail page login.
In this case the last login would take the "lead" - you would not  always be logged off the other login but the messages sent would go to the last login.
I don't use Jabber enough to say if the 0 in Messages is higher or lower than the 25 in iChat or the web login.
I presume that 0 is in  fact null and 25 is the highest that can be set.
Anyway the idea is that you can log in on various devices and use the Priority setting to make one the "first Receiver" if you will.
I have always thought it defaulted to the next device on the next highest priority.
I.e. the Home computer could be left on but a Work computer would have a "higher" priority and take the "lead" and a phone app could be set "higher" still and override thing when you are not at a computer.
I would wonder, based on your comments, whether these Buddies have logins with the same Priorities  and when one device logs out the other(s) are not taking over, making them look Off Line.

  • IChat: Buddies Flash and Disappear

I am having a problem with iChat. This has happened with only a couple buddies though. I typed in their username, and then it just flashes for a few seconds and disappears. They are in my Address Book, but they won't stay in iChat. I tried adding the person a few times, but this still happens. What can I do about it?
    Thanks,
    Gregory Zackim

    Hi,
If you read the person's response two minutes later on the same day you will see they said that it was sorted.
How iChat is spelt does vary depending which file or part you are looking at.
It makes no difference to Spotlight as Spotlight does not look in the place the poster needed to look.
So they should have been looking for file with a lower case "c"
In general with all the differences in languages and level of English used by posters whose first language is not English it also does not matter about the spelling when talking about the problem as long as everyone understands.
Was there, prehaps, another reason why you wanted this 2 month old post raised to the top of the topic List ?

  • Need to move iChat buddies from 10.5 server to 10.6 server

How can I export/import buddies from a Leopard server to a Snow Leopard server? We are moving our iChat service off a server that is scheduled to retire and I'd like our users to not go through the pain of re-adding their buddies again.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
10.5 Server and specifically iChat Server has it's own forum
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1235 (for Export)
10.6 Server has Forum called Collaboration Services for iChat Server (And a few other bits)
    The Forums are within Categories.
Technically each is within it's own OS Category but Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard are all shown in this "Master Category" here
The reason I am posting these links is that I don't know enough about the Server version of iChat.
The chances are that someone in the 10.6 Server > Collaboration Services forum knows how to Export the list from 10.5 Server and input it in to 10.6 Server.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to have iChat buddies who have iChat but use a gmail account

My friend and I both just got out macs but she got her iChat through her gmail account and I used AIM. Is it possible for her to add me and for us to ichat? This is all so new to us.. HELP!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
An AIM Buddy List (Also read for Apple IDs used in iChat) to a Jabber Buddy List (Also read Googletalk here) is not possible in the every day set up of iChat.
A ) AIM logins are from:-
    AIM Screen Names
    Apple Names Ending @mac.com
and MobileMe names ending in @me.com
    B) Jabber logins are split between:-
    Any Jabber server
And GoogleTalk (the server Naming method is different from regular Jabber servers so the software in iChat has been set up to deal with this)
Any Variant of the A) section can be added to any Buddy list in the A) section
Any Jabber B) can be added to any other B) type login Buddy list
    But ...
Some Jabber servers also run Transports for linking to other major IM services
Instructions for MSN Buddies but the process is the same for AIM Buddies to be placed in a Jabber Buddy list.
This list of Jabber servers also lists the Services that can also be registered for.
You will notice there are not many that do AIM. (AIM transports seem to be the ones most likely to fail).
Once having set a Jabber account that has a Coloured Icon for the Transport and registering with that as well (this is using a third Party Jabber app that Can Register) - then you can use the naming convention for that Server in your Google Buddy list as the coloured Transports can be accessed from any other Jabber account. (See the first set of Instructions)
    Summary.
Simple answer is No (either get an AIM name or an @mac.com name for Free or a GoogleTalk Name.
    Long answer.
Is for Text Chatting only, and there is a work around using Jabber Transports (Links to Other IM Service) which involves registering with a server that does Transports to AIM - then registering with the Transport - then adding your AIM (Or another IM service Buddies) to your Buddy list, in a way that does not use two @ symbols

  • Online iChat buddies appearing Offline

    Here is my situation.
I bought a used Mac Mini G4 for a relative of mine. It has a clean install of Leopard. I have iChat open and there are 4 people online that are showing up as offline. I know they are online because they show up on my MacBook (also running 10.5.1). The only buddy that shows up as online is my other screen name (logged-in in the other room on my MacBook). Bonjour is off.
    What is going on?

Also get them to do these things
    Make sure ichat is Launched
    Go to the View menu
Make sure Show Offline Buddies is ticked
This should show you are an Off line Buddy or Not.
Click your Name once to highlight
Use the Apple Key and i key together (Get Info)
This should bring up the iChat card for you.
    Click on the Address Card
This may or may not have your Real Name or Nickname BUT will have at least your Screen name.
Check this screen name character for Character matches your name (AIM names should not have a Suffix - @mac ones should have the @mac.com only once as the software adds it itself when Adding Buddies)
    Next.
Go to the iChat menu item.
    Preferences > the Accounts
Highlight the account name on the left.
Select the Security tab on the right (main part of the pane)
Make sure at this stage Allow All is used.
Of course make sure in System Preferences > Accounts they are logged in as their Mac User account and not any you might have set up for yourself while you were there. (this would make the Address Book "wrong" and may lead to Problems trying to Add your own screen name)

  • Contacting iChat Buddies using AIM from an old iMac

I currently use AIM (v. 3.0N) on an old iMac (OS v8.6). I want to chat to a couple of buddies who have recently switched from AIM to using the latest version of iChat with OSX v10.5. I have successfully added their screen-names to my AIM setup, but wondered if I now need to e-mail or phone them to ask them to add my screen-name to their new iChat setups (they haven't yet appeared online)? Or will iChat automatically notify them - as with Windows Messenger - that they are now on my 'buddies' list (next time then sign on) and give them the option to accept or reject (so-to-speak)? Yan (UK)

    Hi
You need to tell them your screen name or wait till they come online and text them.
    "will iChat automatically notify them"=no
    Tony

  • Ichat buddies not showing up online.

Hi, I just upgraded to snow leopard and every time i add a buddy they show up offline. I know that they are online because there computer was right next to me and on the same network.

    Hi,
    There can be several reasons.
In Snow Leopard/iChat 5 you don't have to chose the Type of Buddy you are Adding in any AIM Based List. You now type the Screen Name in full.
    Examples
    ralphjohnsr for AIM
[email protected] for the Older .Mac Service type email ID (It will not be a working Email unless they are using it with MobileMe.)
[email protected] if they are using a MobileMe (@me.com) name.
They could be set to Invisible in their Buddy List.
In their iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security they could be set to "Allow Specific People" and you have not been added to that List.
You are in their Block List.
Also check your Block and Allow Lists.
The most common error is just misspelling the Buddy's Screen Name.
If they can See you in their Buddy List start a Text Chat then use the Buddies Menu and the Add item which will add the Screen Name connected to the "Right" Buddy List.
