Ichat Buddy Alert sound problems

i like to be alerted with a special custom sound when my family members log in to ichat, but the sounds i have been sing doesnt work now for some reason. it is odd. when i assign a song file (just a few seconds of a song that i have editied down) or a sound clip for a movie to play when a certain contact comes online, it wont play. i just get an error sound (which is also a sound file that i have chosen, so it works fine as a part of leopard, jut not for ichat). if it is a premade apple sound then it is okay and i will be alerted properly when that contact comes online. i have a bunch of sounds in the sound folders but i cant play any of them now through ichat as an event….. strange. anyone else have this problem? does anyone else use this feature?
oh, these are the exact same features i used in tiger....

Very.
Does this Buddy have an entry in the Address Book that shows both these Screen names ?
If they actually have two Address Book entries, what happens if you add the other Screen name then delete the current one (So you effectively swap the Address Cards' iChat details).
(I am not sure if that will tell us it is the Address Book entry/Link to Info Card or just something about the Info Card).
If you have Developers Tools and therefore Property List Editor you can check the com.apple.ichat.plist and expand the bits about the Sounds/Alerts played.
It is beginning to sound like (pun intended) iChat plays the sounds differently for the different Buddy lists - but that would be crazy.
I have nothing new on this.

  • Desperately need some help!! iTunes/Quicktime/iChat/Sound problems....

So, yesterday, I was online, on google video, and when I pressed play on the video, there was no sound, but the video worked...the same was true on every video site i checked. My computer volume was at max, and I even tested the speakers to make sure they were on, and they indeed were.
I thought that was odd...but then the problems really started.....
After that, I clicked on my iChat icon. It bounced once, and did not open. The same thing happened when I clicked on iTunes. 1 bounce, and then nothing. I checked to make sure all of my iTunes mp3 files were on my computer....they indeed are all still here, bit nothing I can do opens iTunes. I've run disc utilities, and disc repair...according to that, everything is peachy-keen on my computer.....but iChat and iTunes STILL will not open, and there is still no sound on anything.
Now, i'm leaning towards the archive and install option....or even just backing up what I want to save, wiping the drive, and starting from scratch.....but i'd really like to not have that happen.
(and, as a side question, if all I want to save are images, several documents, and many mp3 files, would everything be okay if I just backed them up on an external drive, and then loaded them back on to my computer after reinstalling OS X?)
Sorry about the length of this, but I am at my wit's end, and I have no idea what to do.

by third-party, do you mean things I installed that are not manufactured by mac? If that is the case, I have microsoft office, Smart Music, Flip4mac, and Senuti.
I got rid of Flip4Mac to see if that affected my sound problems, but it did not. So, as of now, my problem remains the same...

  • Hi. when I'm texting, if the person i'm texting sends a text before i've sent mine, i dont get an alert sound and the message only arrives after mine is sent even though i may know its there waiting. I didnt have this problem till i updated software. 4s

Hi all. Hope someone can help with this infuriating issue that I didn't have until updating. If a friend texts me while I'm texting them, I don't get an alert sound and the message stays outside waiting for me to send and finish. When I send, my friends message comes in but ive probably gone to home position and missed it. waiting for replies till all hours.

I think the problem lays with Last.fm. I had the same exact problem as you. In your processes screen, end the task "lastfmhelper.exe" Last.fm still scrobbles. The tracks don't skip, although I notice there is still a bit of a lag in the first part of the song - but if you can deal with that, no skipping. I think you will have to end that task everytime you boot up your computer, or uninstall last.fm completely until they fix it; it is a bug in their software, as opposed to iTunes.

  • Why my N900 has a problem with beeps/alert sounds!...

I have a weird problem with my N900 and the alert sounds.
They seem to stutter or not sound smoothly as if something is slowing them.
It happens on message alerts, email, sms and camera shutter etc.
Difficult to describe. I am not technical but it almost seems like it can't keep up maybe the CPU or memory???
Had the problem before and after PR1.2..
Also noticed stutter/pausing on media player as per this clip below from another user.

Searched discussion and can't see a topic but have read someone else mentioning something similar once.

You may have to see about exchanging that MacBook/Pro for another before time runs out, and hope the replacement does not have this issue; and if you have access to an Apple Store with Genius, you may be able to get an appointment to discuss this issue and the exchange prospect, if it comes to that before 14 days from purchase date go by.
I've looked a little and seen a few different problems with some of the hardware you have, but not the same issue with the green color, etc. Do you have a different external display device to see if the color is due to the internal graphics hardware in the MacBookPro retina?
Hopefully you can get an answer in this matter.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I can't add a custom alert sound.

I'm trying to add a custom sound for when a buddy logs in. The problem is, after I go through the add sound steps, the sound never shows up in the list and the event alert goes back to its default alert. I'm using iChat AV 3.0.1 (v392), and using AIM.

    Hi Robert,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
The sounds need to be of the right quality (too high does not work).
They also need to be in the right folder. Sounds can be put in your Home folder/Library/Sounds and will appear in the third division of the sounds available to iChat. They are iChat's Own sounds, the System Sounds and any in your Home/Library/Sounds folder, separated by feint lines in the drop down.

  • Screen flashes instead of alert sound after 10.4.11 update

After updating to 10.4.11 about 2 weeks ago I noticed that my screen flashes whenever an alert sound should occur. It looks just like the "Flash screen when an alert sound occurs" option found in the Universal Access (Hearing) settings. I toggled the setting found there, but even when it's set to off, my flashing screen alert continues to occur. I know a friend of mine who experienced the exact same problem, but he hasn't found a solution to this (minor, but annoying) problem yet either. I also talked to a "genius" at the local Apple store. He hadn't heard about the problem and couldn't offer a solution either.
Is anybody else experiencing a flashing screen alert? How does one get rid of it? Thanks.

    this solved it for me:
i checked my system alerts and found that the alert sound was set to some invalid legacy sound called AIM - probably left over from when i used AIM instead of iChat.
i set the alert sound back to one of the original Apple sounds and viola! No More Flashing Screen!!!

  • Lose System Alert Sound after Fast User Switching

After switching between accounts a few times I lose all alert sounds from all applications, including the Finder. I can still play music, hear audio from movies, etc., but any alert sound is now silenced. Anyone else know a fix for this?

    I don't have a solution, but I thought I'd mention
I'm having the same problem where the alert sounds
(Finder, Mail, etc.) can no longer be heard so that
the "powers that be" can see that it's a growing
problem and perhaps find a resolution.
I didn't notice this problem until I recently
upgraded to 10.4.4, but I may have simply not noticed
with 10.4.3 since I've always got my iTunes cranked
    up.
    G4/933Mhz
    Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.4.4)
I had no problem until 10.4.4 and I do not switch users. But having some knowledge of Unix, I went digging, and I tried a Force Quit on the system process "coreaudiod". Can be found in Activity Monitor - select all processes. iChat started sounding again on its own, and a restart of Mail got it going again. This worked for me (tired of re-booting to fix).
    I hope this helps others

  • No Alerts Sounds - Message Sent, Mesage Receive, etc.

    iChat3.1.4 (v432)
None of the alert sounds work IE When I send or receive IM messages no alert sounds play. I've changed the sounds from the defaults to the OS Submarine sound and still nothing. I've restarted the app and my computer but that didn't fix it.
When I am in the iChat Preferences panel and I select the various sounds from the drop down menu, they preview just fine, they play and I can hear them. They just won't sound in the actual chat windows, etc.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Tanner,
If Defcom's solutions did not work then delete com.apple.ichat.plist in ~/Library/Preferences
This holds the Alert sounds on a global level and those set for each Buddy (If you have set any).
You have to restart iChat afterwards.
You also lose Bubble colour, Font choices and Saved Status Messages that are most visible.

  • When my phone is locked, and I get a text message, it isn't making any sounds. When the phone is in use and I get a text, it makes the alert sound.

When I get a text while the phone is locked it doesn't make the designated alert sound, but it does if the phone is unlocked and in use.

I think you have the 'do not disturb' function enabled. If there is a moon icon in the top right of the home screen that will be the problem. Go to settings,  do not disturb, and make sure manual slider is off. I had the same problem and took me a day to figure out.
    Good luck

  • PSA: in iOS 7.1.1, alert sounds are tied to your media/game volume and not to your ringer volume

I was befuddled by this for a long time.
Alert sounds would just stop making noise.  This includes dings from txt messages and new mail.
If I went to Settings>Sounds>Text Tone and select several options, all I would get were vibrations.
I rebooted the phone and toggled the silence switch on and off.
I finally figured out that if I started a game and turned the volume up, the noises would come back.
I think it is reasonable for a user to wish to play a game on mute but still hear alert messages.
I think if we can only have two separate systems for audio control, the alert sounds should be tied to the ringer, not to the media/game sounds.
When I spoke to an apple support person over online chat, they seemed to agree that this sounds like a bug.
I have seen many confused posts in these forums regarding alert sounds suddenly disappearing.
Below is the text that I submitted at http://www.apple.com/feedback/
If you share this problem, I suggest you do the same.
    My case number is 606343836
    Begin message:
I've had a 5S since a few weeks after launch and this problem has only come about in the last few weeks, so I suspect it has to do with a recent OS patch.
Sometimes my alert messages just stop working.  They seem to work one minute, then they stop.  Alert messages would include email notifications and txt message pings.  When they are not working, I can go into Settings>Sounds>Text Tone, and all of the options will simply result in a vibration and no sound.
Rebooting the phone does not fix the problem.
What I have found to fix the problem is to open a game and raise the volume of the game.  Then when I exit the game, alert messages start again.
This seems reversible, if I go back in and mute a game, my alert messages go away as well.
If this is by design, I do not think it should be, as I think it is reasonable for a user to want to control the "media" part of the volume separately from the "ringer" and "alerts" part of the volume. It makes sense to want play a game or video on mute but still get alert messages. If anything, I think the alerts volume should be tied to the ringer volume, I think that would make sense.

Additional info, which makes me think this is a bug rather than a feature.  If you go into Settings > Sounds and turn off the "Change with Buttons" option, then the ringer should always ring at the volume of the slider on the screen.
The volume buttons now appear to only affect the media/games volume, and it works as expected EXCEPT:
if you are in a game and you mute the volume in the game, then exit the game, all alert sounds are muted and you can't turn them back up by raising the volume with the volume buttons.
If you go back into the game and raise the volume within the game, then exit the game, then alert sounds do turn back on.
I have tested this with two games from two developers.

  • No alert sounds on iPhone 6 IOS 8.1.1

Hi there very frustrating, the phone stopped alert sounds 1-2 days ago, despite the function being turned on for all major apps. Also won't ring with 'No caller ID'. Update installed this morning - still same problem. Also touch screen is sometimes unresponsive. need to go out of app and restart.

No doubt akbuzzer,,,I recently switched from many years with Samsung phones and finally took the plunge and paid what I consider a buttload of money for an IPhone 6.Since day 1 I have had nothing but trouble with purchased alert tones.Contacted Apple numerous times cleared and synced my phone several times as per their instructions with no fix.How can my 300 dollar "Dell" laptop download and play purchased Apple ITunes products with no issues but my 600 dollar Apple IPhone 6 can't download and play tones that Apple is selling. So yes after hours of research and wondering what i'm doing wrong it comes down to 3 dollars,,,that might make me go back to Samsung.

  • Alert sounds not working in iPad

My iPad does not play alert sounds and line2 does not send push notifications with sound until i open the app.  Maybe the app but does anyone else have this issue?  I have gone to settings/generalsound and set the "Ringer and Alerts" section sound to wide open and I turned the "Change with Buttons" to off.  Does anyone else have this issue.  I was not really looking forward to restoring a back up copy but I might have to.

I have found the answer to my own problem...listed here in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008964?start=0&tstart=0 it has to do with the lock mute/rotation button.  When the selector switch is on lock rotation alerts will not play sound.  Also sounds in apps and sometimes video will not work unless you are listening through head phones.  This bug has existed for a while according to the post in the link.

  • Frustrating Sound problem

Something has happend to my sound on safari and i have no idea what. My sound works fine for all other application such as itunes, but safari can't seem to play any sounds with quicktime or flash websites. I also have the same problem on other internet browsers like firefox. I don't know what could be going on that only internet applications can't produce sound. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

    FYI,
This is probably what you were experiencing. Launching some programs (like GarageBand) can reset the settings to the correct values.
No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)

  • Ichat doesn't sound anymore

ok, so my speakers are on max. my "speech volume" in ichat > preferences > alerts for every one is max. i can here itunes etc. i can even here the preview for the sound.
but no sound in my ichat. it was working just a while ago...i don't know what happened! help please

    Hi Patrick Y,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages
If you mean you can not hear sound alerts for iChat nor the spoken text if chosen - then go to System Preferences > Sound > Special Effects and turn up the Alerts volume.

  • Repeating system alert sound, without user action 10.6.1

After installing 10.6.1 on my Macbook Pro unibody 17", i get a repeating system alert sound every 2 seconds. I have restarted, logged out, changed my sound settings, and eventually just had to turn the system alert volume all the way down.
Anyone else having this problem after the 10.6.1 update? Any resolutions besides muting system alerts?
    Thanks,
    c

I think I found my issue - It seems to have been with Peer Guardian. I uninstalled Growl a little while back because of a bug causing Firefox to launch in the background instead of in the foreground (help from Apple's forums helped with finding that fix), and I think PG heavily utilizes Growl for user notifications.
One this you might try is creating a dummy user and logging into that account to see if the problem still exists. If it doesn't, then you know one of your startup items (System Preferences --> Accounts --> (user) --> Login Items) is causing the sounds you're hearing.
