IChat cannot connect ot AIM

trying to set up iChat on an (old?) PowerBook G4 (Mac OS X 10.4.11), iChat v3.1.9 every time iChat starts up and tries to connect a window opens telling me that the AIM login failed (wrong Pseudonym {screenname} or Password).
During setup I have choosen *.Mac account* and entered the MobileMe ID (ending on @me.com). In the window I see that this has changed to @mac.com.
On the same PowerBook there is another user installed and that one worked perfect: connection through .Mac and having the same @mac.com endings. This account is about three years old (no MobileMe then). The newly created account is a family account and was created with @me.com
I have also created an AIM account right now and adding that account to iChat allows me to connect to AIM without a problem. Therefor I assume that my software on the PowerBook is ok but there must be something wrong with the handover from iChats MobileMe data to AIM.
Unfortunately I have no idea what I have to change, can anyone help? Thank you.

Hi,
As you know the .Mac service when it ran did much the same as MobileMe does now.
For iChat though there was one difference in that trial or even a lapsed Paid For account could continue to be be used in iChat.
In Leopard when MobileMe came out an Update ran that changed all the .Mac references to MobileMe and added the option to many apps including iChat.
Trial MobileMe accounts do not work after the 60 day trial. (The trials need a active Credit card registered and also Active Cancellation).
In Tiger there was no MobileMe update hence the work around for adding @me.name as AIM names.
The Get an iChat Account Button used to lead to @Mac.com for a registration as a trial when Adding an Account/Screen name to the iChat > Prefs > Accounts
In Leopard this button, more recently, this has led here
So now @mac.com names are being used as iChat Screen Names.
The downside is that you get stuck with the password you first set up.

  • IChat lost connection to AIM!?!?!?!

Everytime I try to go on to iChat this message pops up "iChat lost connection to AIM. The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost." Any help?!?!

Help! I've got the same problem and I've tried - port 443, 1080, 5091 and neither works. I can ping the aol server, use msn, but I cannot connect to AIM with ichat or with the standalone version AIM 4.7 for the mac. The web version doesn't seem to work either. I started a new account and i got the same error message at login - could not connect to aim - the connection tot he host was unexpedtedly lost. I am at a school, but the network guys have said that the application isn't being blocked and the ports should be open. I have a wireless macbook with os x tiger and a wired imac intel with os x tiger and neither work. any suggestions?

  • IChat wont connect with AIM

I've literally been through this entire forum looking for a solution but I have found none. I keep getting the timed out message from iChat saying it cannot connect to AIM. I have tried that changing the port to 443 thing. I've tried deleting that com.apple.iChatAIM.whatever thing, and I even tried finding my DNS server numbers and re-putting them into my system to change it. But all to no avail. This is truly astonishing and I'd really like to know how I'm going to fix this because I'm basically at wits end.

If you have tried everything on the forum I would suggest to have a look at your subscription with your ISP. If your camera works with Photo Booth it'll probably work with iChat. Sounds like a quick check with a new user account could be telling you more. Start here:
    http://www.aim.com/
    With your new screen name:
    Choose iChat>preferences, click accounts
Click "+" in the account window and select AIM
Register your new AIM account and see if it works in iChat.

  • IChat not connecting to AIM account

I can seldomly ever connect to AIM on my iChat app.
Im using te standard AIM 4.7 from AOL.com, but iChat cant connect.

    Hi
Apart from Rj's advice.... Do you use the same AIM screen on both apps ?
Have you set the Multiple Logins option in iChat > Preferences > Accounts section
Select the AIM account in question and then the Account info tab. This has a check box at the top of the pane to Enable Mulitple Logins.
You have to be logged out of AIM first (all apps)

  • IChat not connecting to AIM server

for the last 2 days when i open iChat it signs on for 2 seconds, then immediately signs off and says "Lost Connection with AIM"
I've never had this problem before and everything had been working fine. why is this happening and how do i fix it?

    Hi
Have you tried logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190
Go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

    Hi Irobin,
I am puzzled by this at the moment.
Deleting the .plist file would normally sort this.
Can you create a test Mac User account on your Mac.
Set up iChat with exactly the same Screen name in this new account.
    Does this work ?
You will only see the screen names unless you export the other (Mac Account) Address Book details and import them into this account's one. This can be done though the Backup option the Address Bok has.

  • Ichat Not connecting to AIM.

Im having a problem with Ichat. Since this afternoon, I have been unable to connect to my AIM account on Ichat. It was working fine, I put an away message on and left my computer for a few hours. It was open and it went into sleep mode. When I came back, It stopped working. I tried restarting the computer, modem, wireless, everything. Nothing seems to work. And then the Ichat almost like spasms and signs on and off like 5 times until I get an error message telling me I've tried to log on too many times. All the other internet programs work but Ichat. So now I've been forced to use the actual AIM program, which everyone knows that the program is WAY outdated and extremely buggy. Can someone PLEASE tell me what is wrong. I have a Macbook Pro with Leopard.
    Thank You,
    Ryan

Nope it is a combo of things.
Leopard and the rush from new or retrying Mac users.
GoogleTalk has added AIM protocols (Goodness only know how many people that has added)
At this time of year AIM clear out unused Screen names to allow them to be reused.
This often causes synch problems with the AIM Servers as some people will still list those Buddies in their Buddy list.

  • Safari, iChat cannot connect to internet but FF and other programs can

I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6 and the upgrade is mostly very good. SL is nice and snappy, programs launch faster etc however....
Initially I had the no internet problem which I fixed by trashing the plist files in SystemConfiguration folder and rebooting. So that all worked and I could use the internet however....
The weirdest thing is that Safari will not connect to the internet, it just loads, then beachballs then I have to force quit it. Software Update does not work - just won't connect to the net and iChat just loads and shows nothing. Preference menu item is greyed out and noen of my accounts are shown there and it can't connect to the net however...
Very oddly, Firefox, MailPlane, Netnewswire etc all work perfectly and use the internet and all is fine. So there must be something somewhere aside from the plists I have deleted that are not allowing the connection with the Apple apps.
It's really my first experience ever of having a major issue on a system upgrade. I really don't want to have to do a clean install if I can help it.
Any help would be great thx.

When this occurs it's usually because a proxy is set in the Network preference pane when one isn't needed or vice-versa.
Firefox uses its own proxy settings and as such doesn't rely on the settings in System Preferences.

  • IChat spotty connection w/ AIM

Hey I'm a recent switcher from XP and I have a new MBP. The problem is that sometimes, approx ~ 2/10 tries, iChat will establish a video link with AIM. The rest of the time it just gives an error on the AIM users side, my mother who is using vista.
What puzzles me is that it works sometimes, like I said not a lot, so its hard for me to troubleshoot what the issue is. The sad thing is we had wanted to get this working before I headed back to school. Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
EDIT: Things started going wrong after the latest 'security' update to iChat. Previous to that it was working fine for the 2 weeks I had it.

If your mother has AIM 6.5 on Vista and you are getting some success then you are ahead of the game officially.
The AIM site actually says AIM 6.5 does not do Video chats to iChat.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks and cannot connect AIM to Messages

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and decided to try out the Messages app for instant messaging for the first time.
For some reason, I cannot connect my AIM accounts to work with Messages even though they have always worked perfectly fine through Adium. Everytime I've tried to do so I get the message - An unknown error occured.
Having never used Messages before, I have no idea if this is a common thing. Has anyone had the same experirence since upgrading?

    Just to be clear.
AIM stands for AOL Instant Message.  So an AIM Password is an AOL Instant Message password.
An Apple ID issued by Apple (@mac.com and iCloud issued @me.com and @icloud.com  ending IDs) can also be valid AIM Screen Names
In the past the password at Apple had to comply with the AIM limit of 16 characters.
I have seen a recent post that suggests that this limit may have changed.
Try logging in here if the Name was registered at AIM or is an @mac.com name
    https://settings.aim.com/
(You cannot log in here with an @iCloud.com or @me.com ending ID as there are addtional checks in iChat 6 and upwards that invloved logins to both Apple And AIM at the same time to confirm access to the password).

  • Ichat cannot change server setting, cannot connect

iChat cannot connect. Read it somewhere that I should change server setting from 5190 to 443 after logging out. But the server setting will auto and immediately change back to 5190. Won't let me change to 443. Please help. Thank you.

    Hi,
"Safe" is a relative term here.
iChat, when you restart it will recreate them.
com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist (or the Jabber one) only hold the Login details and will force a fresh login to the relevant server.
com.apple.ichatAgent.plist This holds surprising little info.  Mainly it holds the info order for the iTunes is Playing script (Artist, Album and Track etc.).  It holds the default Idle time (and then of course if you are Idle)
As iChatAgent actually does the login is hold pointers to the other .plists.
com.apple.ichat.SubNet.plist  Holds the Bonjour info (or rather where to get it in the Address Book).
The Status Messages one does what it says.  It will hold all the Status Messages you have Created and decided to Keep.
com.apple.ichat.plist  This holds everything else.  Everything in the Preferences accept the Account Pane.
SOme of the Menu Items depending which window is Front.
Examples.  The Sort Order of your Buddy listt from the View Menu (when the Buddy List is "front". This can be a 2 pass setting (As in Avaible and Alphabetical). The capabilities shown in the Connection Doctor. (Video Menu).
It does hold a list of all the account you have in the Preferences  and some info is then pulled to Display the Accounts in the iChat Menu and the Buddy List windows in the Window Menu
Most important it holds the default or other Font you chose in Messages in the Preferences, whether that font is Coloured, the colour of the IM Background (Balloons or other style).  (Which Style form the View Menu > Messages). Whether you are saving transcripts of the Text Chats, and in iChat 5 what part of an old chat it displays.
If you were using Incoming Overrides you lose that setting.
All your Alerts settings both Globally set in Preferences > Alerts and those set in a Buddy's Info Card
    I could probably list more.
If you have a problem then it pays to tackle the .plist one at a time so that you know which one "Fixed" it.
Deleting them all in one go is often too heavy handed.
When I have a clear idea as to which one may be causing the issue I will list that one only.

  • Problems connecting to aim

I cannot connect to aim via ichat. I keep on getting an error that I have tried too many times within the past few minutes and should wait 10 minutes before trying to connect to aim again, however I haven't logged on all day. Its been like this for a few weeks now. Any help would be appreciated. I am currently using a powerbook and a netgear wireless router. My router is DMZed.

First off, try changing the log-in port:
1 Log out of AIM (in iChat menu), then
    2 iChat > preferences > accounts > server settings
    3 Change 5190 to 443
    4 Log back into AIM
Let us know if this clears up your particular problem.

  • Trouble with AIM and IChat! Cannot connect to IChat, and AIM keeps crashing

I just got my Macbook, and installed AIM. However, it often says "AIM shut down unexpectedly." Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Also, I want to use IChat, but i try to connect, and I can for a few seconds, and then it says "Connection with AIM lost." I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice!

I used to have the same AIM problem. Have you tried Adium instead? If you haven't heard of it, it's an instant messaging program that uses your AIM account but is specifically designed for OS X. It looks nicer too.
    Hope it helps!

  • IChat AV 2.1 - Unable to Connect to AIM Server

Until recently, I had no problem with iChat however in the last few days, I have been unable to connect to the AIM server. In fact, I cannot connect to the ICQ or Yahoo servers either with the respective IM programmes. My internet connection is fine, however I am at a complete loss as to what has happened with my IM programmes. Any ideas would be helpful.
    Cheers.

    HI Swiss Alps,
You would not be using a Netgear device by any chance set to UPnP ?
If so try turning Off and On UPnP a few tiems as people have said this works.
The Security Update does seemed to have caused problems for some.
The Jabber side of iChat 3 uses an SSL connection for Security. I am not sure about paid for .Mac accounts and the encryption they use as I do not have a paid for account to test with, but it might be part of the problem. The above fix seems to work on Netgears. I would reboot the modems and routers in turn to se if that helps with other devices.
Also try turning Off Encryption if you are using it.

  • Aim ichat not connecting

When I attempt to connect to my aim account a message box comes up that it cannot connect to this screen because something is incorrect. This also occurs when I try to log into aim express through the aol website (I know this isn't specifically an ichat problem, but maybe someone here can help). I know my account works because I can check my email, but it does not work for aim. Other family members using their own screennames (on the same account) work fine for aim, but mine doesn't. Can anyone help? Please?
(if not, can someone post a link to the support page on aol - i can't find/access it, and when I call tech support, they won't help because I recently stopped paying for the account (which is free).

    Hi,
Do you mean you use AOL as your ISP and their package to access the Net ?
Have you turned On the IM part ?
If you had such an account and told them that you were no longer going to use it they will have cancelled the Screen name.
