IChat "Connecting" for ages - then doesn't?
I don't use Jabber, and recently I have had trouble getting iChat to connect - period. I followed the advice from another thread to change the port to 443 (I think it was) but this has made no difference. If I quit, and try again, often it will connect - but I have never experienced these problems before.
Any suggestions please would be gratefully received.
All the best
Chris
No not yet Steve.
It's been going on for about a couple of weeks now. We are using it more lately because we have two parents who we've just converted to a Mac and we are helping them over hurdles via Screen Sharing. But it's behaving badly!

My 6 year old was playing on an app we have used for ages then last night i recieved numerous emails stating about $600 of in app purchases had been made! i dont know how this happened as my child does not know my apple i.d. password!
You can try contacting iTunes support and see if they give you a refund or credit for some/all of it : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchaes, Billing & Redemption.
To stop it happening again you can turn off in-app purchases on your iPad via Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases, and also in Restrictions change Require Password to 'Immediately' - the default is 15 minutes during which it doesn't need to be re-entered. -
Ipod will not stay connected for more then a few seconds
I was going to update my nano this morning after downloading the newest version of software, and first off it said the firmware was corrupt. so then I restored it, and it would not restore to the new version so i used the older version. the ipod seems to work in my hand but when i connect it to my computer it will not stay connected for more then a few seconds, then it ejects its self, but itunes still shows it as being there even though the rest of the computer does not
I have not had any issues with it since i bought it which was last june.
any ideas?
JohnHi John,
I would suggest, with your iPod disconnected, that you force your iPod into disk mode (following the instructions in this article)
Connect your iPod to your computer.
Then, try restoring it in iTunes while it is connected in disk mode.
Can you successfully restore your iPod?
If so, when the restoring and resyncing process is all complete, now update your iPod to the latest firmware.
Any success with trying that?

Hi, i have recently purchased an i-phone 4s and had been merrily playing away and set up an i cloud account. However when i tried to access i cloud from my pc i couldn't verify it. I had to change my apple id because i no longer had access to my old e-mail. I managed to sort out my i-phone and change all the accounts to my new apple i.d (except game centre? don't know how to do that yet.) but when i signed out of my old i-cloud account on my pc and tried to sign in with my new apple id it just tries to connect (i get the i'm thinking about it wheel) for ages; not allowing me to log on.
Help!Content (apps, music, ibooks, films etc) is tied to the account that originally downloaded it, so if the iBooks app was downloaded using the account that you used to share with your ex then only that account can download updates to it. As it's a free app you could delete it and re-download it under your own account - and then re-download your ibooks into it (or copy the books to your computer's iTunes first via File > Transfer Purchases and then sync them back to the app).

My iPod touch will start to connect to iTunes, then doesn't.
My iPod will not turn on, so I go it to the apple icon that it is now frozen on. I updated my new Windows 8 computer, updated iTunes completely, tried restarting everything and it will not connect so that I can restore my iPod. If I could get the problem fixed as soon as possible that would be amazing.
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Also, if necessary:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows -
whenever i connect my ipod touch 3rd gen to itunes itunes responds really slowly and when i try and sync it it says sync in progress on my ipod screen but then is stuck with "verifying "matts ipod" at the top of itunes and stays like that for ages.. help
You buy one and only one download.
As it should have been transferred to your computer when you synced, you can contact itunes support and ask for an exception.

IChat connects to Apple test server but no one else for A/V
I've been trying to get iChat working with 2 other people who've both managed to to successfully talk to others through iChat A/V. I was told by Apple's support line that if I could connect to Appleu3test01 successfully, then it had to be the other users, as things on my end were ok. I can connect to that, as can the other users, but I can't connect to them at all, not if they ping me, or I try them. (or anyone else as far as I know) So does anyone have any ideas? Here's the error log if this helps:

I have a "CPE Modem" from Paradyne, model number 02-00100-01 there is no router connected, and I am using DSL that runs at around 768k
ANY advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Ok,
Ummm Where to start.
In the Beginning .... (nope to far back)
There was the bloke, Babbage.... (Still too far...)
Ok the internet and you computer have what are called Ports.
Different sorts of data can be put on different ports even though it is effectively over one connection.
There are 65535 ports in all (+ whether you count 0).
Since the internet came about some of these ports were more commonally used before everyone got worried about Security.
So some ports are always open on most devices and not subject to the "features" that involve other ports. These ports are below the 1024 threshold and that includes the ones the mail apps use and web browsing.
Because of the way these ports are allowed you can almost though different Network devices such as modem and several routers together and those ports will work - Hence the phrase "I can get on the internet" is almost meaningless.
In Terms of what doe iChat 4 use we have to start with a iChat 3 Apple Doc
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208 Don't worry about how this page actually looks, There is a table at the bottom of this page http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/pantherports.html (It shoes 10.3.x firewall setting as well as Tiger 10.4.x firewall as well)
Then we have to look at an iChat 4 Apple Doc
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306688
This points to the changes in the port iChat now uses for the Video or Audio part of the chat.
So iChat 4 has the same Jabber ports (TCP 5220, 5222, 5223)
The same Bonjour Ports (5297, 5298, 5353 on UDP and 5298 on TCP)
The same A/V invite port (5678 on UDP)
iChat 3 at this point uses port 5060 on UDP then moves to 4 ports from the group of twenty (16384-16403) (If busy it move 4 ports UP the group)
iChat 4 does not use port 5060 but uses the 16402 AND then send the Video and Audio down the same port as well. If this is not available it moves DOWN one port at a time.
Some ISPs do block port 5060 (And the other SIP/VoIP port 5060-5063)
iChat 4 should get around this issue.
As to opening them in a router or modem - that depends on the features your device(s) have, how you want or have them linked together, the security you want and how many computers you have.
This site http://portforward.com/routers.htm list many device that can route.
Clicking on your will take you a page about applications that need ports open.
That page (using iChat) will take you to a page that will give you the Default access information (IP, User ID and Password). (It goes on to tell you how to Port Forward but don't worry about this now.
Once you have accessed your device check every single menu to see if you have UPnP and if it is active.
At this point come back and tell us which devices you have, which are doing DHCP, if you found UPnP and how many computers you have ?

Safari blank page or loading for ages and then timeout!
Hi, this is my first topic so please any reply would be much appreciated. I had a week holiday when my Mac was switched off. Before that I havent noticed any problem with it, everything was working fine and fast. I came back on the 1st, had some updates installed on the 2nd and since then I barely can search the web. The pages loading for ages, after that sometimes get info that Im not connected to the web or timeout or the server doesnt respond to that website. BUT my Skype is still fine I even had a two way video call and was perfectly working. 1st I thought it was Safari so I downloaded Mozzilla but I had the same issue with that. Sometimes Safari works ok for a while and then all of a sudden just try to go to another page from what I used and was ok and that new page just doesnt load. I emptied the cache, I reset Safari and after that my topsites never work again. Well not never but once I used something from there I will not be able to go back and use another one. Since the reset I cant even see all the icons in my TOPSites. This problem is killing me now, dont really now what to do, this is my first Mac and I bought it last october. Still have plenty to learn.
My Safari version is 4.0.5.
thanksHI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Since you have already emptied the cache and reset Safari...
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. *Make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the addrMss bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If you still have problems with Safari, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

The contribute connection I setup for my client doesn't work for him, but it does for me
I setup a Contribute connection for a client (I have Mac OS X 10.4.11). I tested the connection in another computer (a mac on the same network) and it works just fine. However when my client launches the connection in his computer (a pc) it get this error:
"Contribute could not verify your connection key. A network connection to the server could not be establiched. Please contact your administrator for assistance".
I'm the administrator, but it's hard for me to troobleshoot him, becuase the connection works fine for me. He also got a second error message:
"Contribute could not connect because the server is down or not accepting connections. Please contact your administrator."
I told my client to wait and try again later (I have had to do that in the past when setting my own connections, sometimes it works right away, sometimes the server doesn't respond on the spot). However I would like to know if any body else have had these issues and if the problem could be a network connection, and internet connection a mac-pc incompatibility, or.. what else????
I appreciate any advice.
Thanks,
AdrianaHi,
So this is a "real" AIM Name (Not an @mac.com or MobileMe valid AIM Name) ?
You can login on an older Mac And presumably Here ?
If you Migrated a User to the new computer you may find you don't have permission to Write to the Keychain and that chaning the Passsowrd is not actually doing anything.
In Lion go to the Finder > GO Menu and hold th ALT key so you can select Library
In the Library open Keychains
Highlight the Login.keychain.
Do a Get Info (CMD (⌘) + i keys together).
At the bottom of the panel that shows should be Permissions and Ownership
Your Account's shortname should be in the list.
You should have Read and Write Permissions (you may need to click the Padlock)
With the padlock Unlocked also click the cogwheel type icon and see if you are listed as "Make (Shortname) the Owner" (it should be greyed out if you already Own the file).
In Applications/Utilities and opening Keychain Access should also list as many entries for the AIM name as you have changed the password for (it creates a new entry rather than changing it)
Check that one of these does hold the right Password. (Delete the others if required)
I know that iCloud created @me.com names will only work in ichat 6 and the Messages Beta due to the way iChat 6 and above login to me.com and AIM so that AIM gets permission to read the password.
I have not heard of this issue the other way round.

I have a classic, several years old.
It will not recharge; the Apple logo flashes every few seconds then disappears.
I have tried the 'reboot' advice i.e. move the Hold switch on and off, hold the Menu and Center buttons, no success.
I have tried this many times and kept the ipod connected for several hours. And I have tried two different cords, one connected to the desktop computer, one connected to electrical outlet.Hi enbridge4,

Have connected to homeshare, but Itunes will not let me see the homeshare library from another PC. It is connected and when I click on ******homeshare library it says it is downloading it - but then doesn't???? Help!
Hello ariani,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Home Sharing in iTunes. I recommend the following steps for the issue you described:
4. Check your network connection
Home Sharing requires a home network with an active Internet connection. All the devices you want to use with Home Sharing need to be connected to your home network.
In addition, verify that:
All your devices are connected to the same router, if you have multiple routers. Using multiple routers may prevent discovery between these devices.
Your devices are not using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), or that they are all on the same VPN. A VPN may isolate the device and cause connectivity disruptions.
If you have a router set up with a guest network, make sure all devices are either connected to the guest network and devices on the guest network are allowed to communicate with each other, or switch all devices to the primary network on your router.
If your computer is asleep or shutdown, or iTunes is closed, there's no access to the shared iTunes library. Wake up or start the computer and open iTunes to regain access to that library.
Your router needs to be up-to-date. If you are using an AirPort or Time Capsule, read this article to find out more about firmware updates. If you are using a router from another manufacturer, contact the manufacturer to inquire about available updates.
5. Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries. In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general. If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration. For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu >System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
Block all incoming connections
Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
6. Quit and reopen apps and iTunes
If connectivity issues persist, quit and reopen iTunes on your computer. Then, quit and reopen the apps on your iOS device.
7. Restart your network router
Restart your home network router using the method recommended in documentation from the manufacturer. This may include disconnecting the power cord for thirty seconds or more.
Note: During this period, Internet services such as a VoIP-based phone will not work, and any additional routers may need to be reset in sequence.

IChat Connects then Disconnects
So I was setting up my girlfriends brand new MacBook last night, and iChat wouldn't work. We ran all of the software updates before trying to use it, so it was up to 3.1.7. When we launch iChat, it connects for half a second (we can see her buddy list), but then instantly disconnects with the message:
lost connection with aim
the connection to the host was unexpectedly lost
Heres what I tried to do: I deleted the iChat app and reinstalled it from the installation CD. That was version 3.1.4. It had the same problem, and even after deleting the receipt for the ichat update, software update still wouldn't run the 3.1.7 updater. So now shes stuck on 3.1.4 and it still won't connect. At first I thought it might be some kind of strange network issue, but I downloaded AOL's AIM client and it connects no problem over and over.
Is there a place I can go to download an ichat "installer"? I'd rather NOT have to do an entire archive and install on a brand new machine, but if I have to I have to I suppose.Hi 1008com,
Dave suggested changing the port in iChat to 443.
(a port below the 1024 threshold)
Have you done this ?
The AIM for Mac application (and the one for the PC) has a fall back set of ports that are also below the 1024 threshold hence it will connect even if it can not find port 5190 open.
The reason we refer to this threshold is that modem and routers are often open below this number but need either UPnP other some other method of allowing ports above that number.
I am not sure from these posts what you have actually done.

Hi. MAny thanks for the answer. Am new to Apple - what's the "real" MacBook Pro forum?
I would like to know also!
For your issue - Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.
Change your router channel. Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router. Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
Unlock the padlock
Locations: Automatic
Highlight Airport
Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock. Highlight Airport. Network Name-select your name. Click on the Advanced button. Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click the OK button and lock the padlock. Restart your computer.

Hi Everyone, been struggling all day to restore my settings on my ipod, as my little brother has put a restriction password in place and made me not able to get into Safari, iTunes, Camera which I really need. I have tried everything, resetting my proxy settings, turning off the firewall, changing my network location, ran diagnostics. Everything seems fine on that, I post below my results. I also tried restoring from the device, but with the restrictions code in place I can not do so. And everytime I am dowloading the software update before the restore it comes up with 'Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later'. I have been using google for ages and am not sure what I have missed.

Daniel (Puggy858)Hi Diesel vdub,
Did that and I tried again, download stops halfway through and comes up with same message I have already quoted. Wifi Signal is 5/5, network is working, just not letting me download via iTunes. -
I had my iTunes and library on my home computer. The computer crapped out along with the hard drive. I have my library on my iPod and want to put it on my new computer, but any time I connect the iPod to my home computer (and work computer for that matter), it only connects for about 5 seconds and then disconnects on its own. I go to look at the iPod as a hard drive and I have nothing but empty folders (contacts, calendar, recordings and something else), but nothing is in them.
1) How do I get my iPod to connect to my computer?
2) How do I get my iPod to connect to iTunes?
3) Why don't my music files on my iPod show up on my computer?
I have uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled iTunes. I have done the "trick" of hitting the 'Menu and Center' buttons at the same time unitl the Apple icon appears. I have tried going into Disk Mode. I don't know what to do now. The word "Resetting" scares me because this is where I have my 150 GB of music stored and I'd rather not have to upload my CD's again.............will resetting affect that? The word "Restore" is even scarier!!!
Help!i am using a cable connector like this one.. it works with audio when pluged into a stereo but not a TV.i am trying to display video from ipod, also from other apps.. i also want to know why it does not work.
i use the video app on the iPod and video stored on other aps.
